“Haven’t Gotten That Far Yet”

December 16th, 2014

anthony collins 0905If you are uncertain whether Anthony Collins’ days as a Buccaneer can be measured in a matter of hours, then Joe’s not sure what to say.

Collins wasn’t just benched from his starting left tackle spot Sunday. [read more]

Hot Seat

December 16th, 2014
Nick Kostos of Bleacher Report believes Bucs QB Josh McCown is on the hottest of hot seats.

Nick Kostos of BleacherReport.com believes Josh McCown is on the hottest of hot seats.

It’s been so bad this year that Joe is numb. It’s hard for Joe to get bent when stench is expected week in and week out; Sunday after agonizing Sunday.

The way Josh McCown plays Santa Claus with the ball — the last game he didn’t have a turnover was the win at Washington — is shameful and one can only wonder how he keeps his job. [read more]

GMC Is Not Kellen Winslow

Bucs DT Gerald McCoy said he has the mentality of a soldier that he doesn't want to come off the field when injured.

Gerald McCoy said he has the mentality of a soldier and doesn’t want to come off the field when injured.

Uh, oh.

Yesterday, when the Bucs stud defensive tackle and unquestioned leader of the defense, Gerald McCoy, discussed his season-ending knee injury with the Tampa Bay pen and mic club, he pulled out the old “I’m a soldier” card.

Sort of.

We all know how well that went over the last time a football player did that. [read more]

Lovie Smith: “True Football Fans Can See We’re On The Verge”

McCown Paving Path For Mariota

December 15th, 2014

josh mccown 0913

It really is this simple: Josh McCown is not Lovie Smith’s kind of quarterback. He really isn’t.

Oh, Lovie sang hosannas over McCown — a guy he cut in Chicago — as if he was the second coming of Roger Staubach. Anyone with a sober mind and a sense of history thought this was a hard sell, you know, that car was only driven by an old lady who took it to church once a week. [read more]

Jameis Watch: The Numbers

December 15th, 2014

jameis 1215

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida. [read more]

Tight End Invisibility Stands Out

Tight end Brandon Myers (left) has been very quiet

Tight end Brandon Myers (left) has been very quiet

Tight end is not a big part of the Tampa Bay offense this season. The days of Tim Wright making sick catches over the middle are long gone.

Heck, Dallas Clark catching 47 balls and four touchdowns a couple years ago almost feels like the glory days. [read more]

Don’t Need A Quarterback, Huh?

December 15th, 2014

josh mccown 0920

Joe knows Bucs fans like to hug onto this notion that defense wins championships like a child cuddles a teddy bear.

That notion is about as outdated as Latin.

Joe is convinced way too many Bucs fans would be just fine if the Bucs ran a wishbone offense with Tim Tebow and to hell with the forward pass. Just go full blast Woody Hayes. [read more]

Bucs “No. 1 In Line For Mariota”

Peter King of theMMQB.com is of the mind the Bucs are after Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Peter King of theMMQB.com is of the mind the Bucs are after Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Sometimes actions speak louder than words. In Joe’s view, actions mean something, words are too often empty soundbytes.

Take the Bucs quarterbacks (will ya?). Josh McCown plays like a refugee from the UFL, which he is, with his constant and wanton disregard for ball security. [read more]

What Is Mike Glennon Thinking?

December 15th, 2014
mike glennon 1201

An intriguing take on Glennon’s body language Sunday

It wasn’t long ago that Lovie Smith, after he made such fanfare out of acquiring a journeyman quarterback (who he cut in Chicago) as if it was the second coming of Kenny Stabler, made the eyebrow-raising proclamation that Mike Glennon was his quarterback of the future.

This, of course, after he deemed Glennon second string. [read more]

A Few Thoughts On Lovie Smith’s Job Security

December 15th, 2014

lovie 1110bWith a 2-12 record and staring down the barrel of a 2-14 season — in perhaps the worst division in NFL history — and guiding a Bucs team many thought talented enough to be winners, Lovie Smith has earned questionable status when it comes to job security.

And Joe’s really sick and tired of hearing fans and media types spout off about how Team Glazer would never fire Lovie with three guaranteed-salary years ($15 millionish) remaining on his contract. [read more]

Bucs Could Do Worse Than Bill Lazor

December 15th, 2014

The next Bucs offensive coordinator? Dolphins OC Bill Lazor (r) has helped develop multiple quarterbacks.

They’re calling for Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin’s head, from the Miami Herald and beyond. Seven- and eight-win seasons aren’t tolerated in South Florida.

Imagine that.

That means Philbin’s first-year offensive coordinator, Bill Lazor, could be walking the streets in 14 days and ready for the Buccaneers. [read more]

Offense? “Blow It Up”

December 15th, 2014

josh mccown 1215

The Bucs’ offensive line is, at best, a jumbled mess. Anyone who thinks Josh McCown is anything more than a turnover-prone journeyman has to be watching games well into a bottle — and the running game is a rumor, short of accidents here and there.

This offense is truly a mess. In five of the Bucs last seven losses, the defense has held its opponents to 22 or fewer points. That right there tells you the offense is a hot mess. [read more]

Will New Coordinator Hire Position Coaches?

December 15th, 2014
Will Jeff Tedford's replacement get to hire his own position coaches? Did Tedford?

Will Jeff Tedford’s replacement get to hire his own position coaches? Did Tedford?

Jeff Tedford started his Tampa reign with Lovie Smith’s running backs coach and receivers coach, meaning friends of Lovie who coached with him in Chicago.

Tight ends coach Jon Embree and offensive line coach George Warhop? They were veteran NFL guys and members of the Browns’ blown up 2013 staff.

Embree was a Pac-12 head coach at Colorado when Tedford was at “Cal,” but Joe never felt like Tedford, a career college coach with a CFL background, had the guiding hand in those hires.

Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow

Wholesale roster changes afoot from Bucs GM Jason Licht?

Wholesale roster changes afoot from Bucs GM Jason Licht?

A long look at the Bucs yesterday, today, and what to expect tomorrow and beyond.

Well, well, well, Joe smells a shakeup. So Anthony Collins got benched and Demar Dotson was moved to left tackle. If you read between the lines, it doesn’t seem temporary, short of the Bucs drafting a left tackle in the first round (God help us).

Joe remembers Bucs general manager Jason Licht saying a huge thing he learned working with Bill Belicheat was that Belicheat said, if you make a mistake, then cut your losses and move on. Everyone makes mistakes, but hanging onto a guy with the hope he turns things around will dig your grave. [read more]

Who Is “Upstairs?”

December 15th, 2014

DotsonJoe brought word yesterday when Lovie Smith stated on the Bucs-Stinking Panthers pregame show that inconsistent left tackle Anthony Collins was getting benched and right tackle Demar Dotson would shift to fill Collins’ spot.

After the game, Lovie said it was a “coach’s decision.”

It seems Dotson believes the call came from higher up the food chain. [read more]
