Jon Gruden’s homecoming affair is a joyous occasion, a chance for the Tampa Bay community to express its appreciation for a Super Bowl-winning head coach as he enters the Ring of Honor.
It’s also a sad reminder of where this franchise has dwelled since that fateful evening of Jan. 16, 2009.
It was a Friday night and I was at a local dining establishment with my wife when the phone rang. Just as I was polishing off my second margarita, the office called with the news that Gruden and GM Bruce Allen had been fired. (more…)

The football gods giveth, then they taketh away.
A week after shocking the world with a 13-2 mark against the spread, yours truly promptly suffered a 2-13 slate that put your favorite soothsayer in his place. (more…)

So many things have gone awry for the 2017 Buccaneers, it’s fruitless to try and list them all in one column.
Great expectations have given way to feeble reality as the Bucs slog their way toward an offseason that will likely be marked by significant changes. But of all the sub-plots lurking at One Buc Place, one story line carries the most weight. (more…)

Gather ’round Buc fans, we’ve got a classic whodunit on our hands.
Somebody wants Dirk Koetter fired, that much is clear. If the Glazers haven’t already made up their minds about whether to bring Koetter back for 2018, the best way to get him out of town is to suggest things have soured between the head coach and the face of the franchise. (more…)
Sage Ira is about as disgusted as most Bucs fans. He shares a neat nugget from Matthew Stafford, and plenty, plenty more.

The Bucs suffered a blind-side hit before the game even started on Sunday, courtesy of a national report that suggested Dirk Koetter and Jameis Winston have a strained relationship.
Then the Bucs went out and virtually handed the Lions a 24-21 triumph that won’t help the relationship between Koetter and Tampa Bay’s disconsolate fan base.
Undermined by five giveaways, the Bucs assured themselves of a losing season after three months of hard knocks and soft defense.
There were some bright spots amid the darkness, but in the end the Lions took another step toward an NFC Wild Card berth while the Bucs slouched toward a division basement they have grown accustomed to. (more…)

Ah, sweet redemption.
After nearly three months of frustration, your favorite football swami rebounded in a big way last week. A 13-2 mark picking against the spread is nothing to sneeze at, almost making up for all that losing. (more…)

Nobody should be surprised that Mike Evans is getting his hands on fewer footballs this season.
After all, the additions of DeSean Jackson and rookies O.J. Howard and Chris Godwin gave Tampa Bay’s passing game more options to complement Cameron Brate and Adam Humphries. I didn’t expect Evans to match his gaudy 2016 numbers: 96 catches for 1,321 yards and 12 touchdowns.

George W. Bush was sitting in the Oval Office and Jon David Gruden was stalking the Buc sidelines.
“No Country For Old Men.” was playing on movie screens and the Bucs proved that a year later with a veteran purge that included Derrick Brooks.
Alicia Keys topped the charts with “No One,” while Legally Blonde debuted on Broadway.
Yes, Buc fans, it was the winter of 2007, and yes, it seems like a century ago. (more…)
They played hard, they played physical … and they lost.
Blame this setback on lack of football smarts. Tampa Bay kicked Green Bay’s rump up and down Lambeau Field all afternoon in a game the Packers simply had to have. (more…)

My only road trip of the season ended in heartache for the visitors and relief for the surging Falcons.
Tampa Bay made it interesting for awhile in the second half, but the Bucs failed to make the plays necessary to extend their winning streak to three games. One look at the face of dejected GM Jason Licht in the locker room and you knew there are no moral victories in the NFL. (more…)

It’s the holiday season, a time for giving.
In that spirit, NFL odds-makers are giving away lots of points this weekend. Four teams are favored by at least 10 points at home and the Falcons are just short of that spread against the Bucs on Sunday.
I’ve been giving away too many games against the spread during this wacky season, which has seen the surprising rise of the Rams, Eagles, Saints and Vikings as division leaders. (more…)
