Joel Glazer Praises GM For Extreme Preparation

May 30th, 2018

“Smooth, Jason, smooth. Wish you were around in ’04.”

Last week, Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer was talking draft with the sage of Tampa Bay sports, JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman.

For those unaware, Team Glazer is typically right there in war room during the draft, usually a table away from the general manager and studying all the preparation and last-minute jockeying, including the many phone calls and texts about potential trades.

This year, general manager Jason Licht and his personnel team being all over the details like Joe on a steaming plate of Hooters tater tots really impressed Joel Glazer.

“It was a very exciting night,” Glazer said. “The anticipation when the pick’s coming and then you’re making a deal and watching it go down. And then to get a guy we’re all excited about. Jason, Dirk and our scouts were prepared for every scenario and that’s why everything went so smoothly and concisely. They were so well prepared. We’re very pleased with our draft class. We filled a lot of needs with players we’re very happy with. We really ticked all the boxes. Going into the season, everyone’s feeling very positive.”

So there you go. A month after the draft, Team Glazer believes “all the boxes” were ticked. And Team Glazer adores its young quarterback, and respects its veteran coaching staff, and knows it has an offense possessing the weapons to outscore opponents every single darn week.

It sure feels like a losing season would have Team Glazer looking for new on-field leadership.

And they sure would be justified in that scenario.

As for evaluating a general manager, that’s a stickier road. Joe asked Glazer about that process two months ago, and if you missed it, you can read all about that right here.

They didn’t tick all the boxes simply because there were too many boxes to fill but it looks like he did a good job filling some of the boxes

licht did a good job this offseason….cant blame him if we only finish with 5 or 6 wins…..

@joe I agree…..a losing season would have Team Glazer looking for new on-field leadership……no doubt about it…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Owlykat Says:

Licht deserves and earned all the Kudos for changing his draft strategy from BPA to BPA for our major needs first, which he worked to perfection this last draft. He started out a rookie GM and his first blunders resulted in our having a high enough draft position to get Jameis. However his BPA style gave us some other good players but his ignoring our trench and RB needs led to our continued cellar dwelling and led to a crisis last year. However that hot seat has matured Licht to a now Veteran GM and he needs to keep his scouts as well. The Glazers need to give him a four year extension now while they can afford him. It is now up to our HC and DC to mature in their roles and get us to the playoffs and keep us perennial challengers for the Super Bowl.

I know there have been a handful of WTF moments with our GM, but all in all I feel like he has drafted remarkably better than Mark Dominik. The only way you can blame him for a losing season is if you believe he (and he alone) selected Koetter to be the HC (and not told to do so by ownership for fear of losing him to another team).

  5. Perimeter Blocker Says:

No doubt the effort is there and it looks like they aren’t trying to lose. I would still like a veteran corner.

No excuses!!! That includes Licht and the Glazers not just the coaches and players.

2017 was a TEAM disaster…not just a players or coaches or GM’s disaster.

I’m with you to a large degree about no excuses…but reasons are not excuses.

We clearly thought we were better than we were especially on defense last year.
So we fans can jump in for some blame as well.

In fairness to Licht the ENTIRE community was on board with #weaponsforJameis. Licht heard the call and got DJAX…OJ…and Godwin.
He left out a running back but he’s addressed that this year.

Bottom line there are only so many draft choices and FA’s. Took us awhile to get enough opportunity to field both a good defense and good offense and good ST’s and kicking game.

But as you say 813…this year we have the players so “no excuses”…unless of course we lose too many of those good players to injury or suspension.

And they will be better this year!!! They are building!!!! My problem is with the so-called fans and joe who seem to think that the table is all set to win the division and walk into the playoffs if the coaches don’t get in the way!!!!!! I would be very interested to see what “real” NFL analyst rate the Buc’s roster as compared to the division!!!!! To me, you can’t tell the coaches playoff or your fired unless you clearly have the most talented roster in the division!!!!! And not a quickly rebuilt defense with other teams castoffs!!!!! Are they better ??? Yes. Is the table set for week 1???? no!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

Licht Bulbs failed experiment and not admitting his mistake in JR Sweezy has been the downfall of the 2017 season along with…

keeping druggie Martin with a outrageous contract even while DM screwing the team with the 4 banned games

“Would a winning GM/Team have cut Drug Martin?”

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

Keep on building screams The Buc False Prophet…

    With what money?

Licht as GM had it easy with JW3 rookie contract. Starting next year we will be in Salary Cap hell with all our young guys to sign

“This year is the LAST YEAR that Licht Bulb gets to “build(spend)” whatever he wants…STARTING NEXT YEAR, the GM job gets 1000x harder”

    @Realist

I am in total agreement with your post. Hindsight is 20-20 and lots of people…including “experts” and we fans thought the Bucs had more talent than we really fielded.

I think we have upgraded that talent. I take your point that it doesn’t mean an automatic berth in the Conference Championship…but I do like our chances this year.

    @StPeteBucsFan

The Sheep and joe were fooled because of the fantasy football effect!!!! They see all the skill positions that were drafted highly!!!!! They would watch the games last year, see our trenches get pushed around and then cry it was “playcalling”!!!!!!!

I do believe that the Bucs have the youngest offense in league, and the drafts have been in the right direction!!!! more and more position are starting to get depth!!!!!!! Why anyone wants to interrupt that is crazy!!! The ceiling is now higher!!!! after 7 years of buffonery and incompetence of talk show dominik and loser lovie, now some want to hold “accountable” and “no excuses” !!!!!!! Finally an exciting team is coming to Tampa!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One Joe doesn’t do fantasy football.

  13. Tony from L.A. Says:

Rome was not built in a day.
And it certainly was not built in a single offseason either.

The Bucs did a lot. I begged for them to do one thing and they really went after it…

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

I started writing that in every post at the end of December and it happened.

    But…
The Bucs are still a few pieces away when looking at the big picture:
1.They need another good interior offensive lineman
    2. They need an offensive tackle that can both challenge D. Smith and at least take over at RT – ideally someone that could be a swing tackle this season as a backup
    3. They need another good young DE for the rotation.

The above 3 pieces would really set this team up with both talent and depth. The jury is still out on the defensive backfield – but they added the right number of pieces to let things play out this season to see what they really have.

Preparation?? Preperation? Yeah preperation H because he has sucked arse!

  16. Guzzie Says:

Licht tried fixing a lot of problems for this team, but the most important problem didn’t get fixed, coaching, if Klueless and Pressbox continue with the same outdated 2008 schemes (vertical offense/soft zone defense), misusing players (DM over Barber), game management and red zone problems, all of which this dynamic duo haven’t improved in the 8 years together (TB/ATL) then hopefully, 2018 with be their final year #JIMSCHWATZ2019

  17. 98bucsfan Says:

If we have a subpar season again, god forbid (knock on wood), I believe Jason licht secured his job. This draft class looks outstanding on paper. And as long as jpp looks like a good trade then he did everything he was supposed to do.

  18. Drew aka q Says:

Joe dont get caught up in the hype…. on offense we look good on paper yes… but this team has let its fans down year after year…. come week 6 if we are well above 500 ill believe until then im tired of the talk…less talky more walky

  19. Trench War Says:

I also am very pleased with how Licht and company directed the draft. Maybe except for a few headscratchers, but I don’t have enough knowledge of the players the Bucs drafted over some of the picks I had on my board. Never the less, my players could easily turnout to be just average while the Bucs picks are truly productive. Time will tell how this class works out, but the way the draft was performed was masterful.

  20. Gambelero Says:

Guys like NFLNut and Pickgrin laid it all out for him, including the need to work them ahead of time and the idea that Buffalo’s two seconds were maybe better than just the one pick at 22. And compare what we got for 7-11 with what Oakland got for 10 to 15.

If we develop continuity, we can do some Belicheat츠럼 moves—like trading a bottom 4 to the Saints for their 3rd rounder next year. If Brees goes down, that could be a 130 for a 65, straight-up.
