March 11th, 2014

It’s still a QB-driven league

Yes, Joe’s still angst-ridden about the Bucs’ quarterback situation. It’s painful.

So in the spirit of winning a Super Bowl and having an offense that doesn’t celebrate first downs like they’re special occasions, Joe wants Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Football to be the next Bucs starting quarterback. [read more]

Don’t Mock Josh McCown

March 11th, 2014

Ross Tucker is “sick” of it. The former affable former six-year NFL offensive lineman and Princeton grad is outraged and sick of the Josh McCown doubters. He is sick of those making excuses to not sign McCown. He is sick of people mocking McCown.

Tucker, who co-hosts “The Opening Drive,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, went off in his recent SportingNews.com column claiming McCown is clearly the best quarterback in free agency and QB needy teams (Joe understands the Bucs may fit this category) would be foolish not to pursue his services.

Stop The Glazer-Revis Nonsense

March 11th, 2014

If Revis Leaves, A “Stunning End”

March 11th, 2014

darrelle revis 0301

Joe was taken aback by how quickly the news cycle blew up last night when it first was learned the Bucs were aggressively looking to trade all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis. Within a handful of minutes, it went from shopping Revis to almost cutting Revis.

Now remember the person who first Twittered last night the Bucs would release Revis by 4 p.m. Wednesday is the same scribe, five days ago, who Twittered authoritatively that Michael Bennett’s days in Seattle were finished. Yesterday, Bennett re-upped with the Seahawks. [read more]

Revis’ Last Interview

March 11th, 2014

Was this Darrelle Revis’ last interview as a prideful member of the Buccaneers?

Maybe. In case you missed it, you can check it out below. Joe caught up with Revis in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl.

Dominik Speaks Out On Revis

March 10th, 2014

TCDominik11The man indirectly responsible for the current Darrelle Revis mess, former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik, spoke out tonight on SiriusXM NFL Radio and praised the flexibility of the Revis contract and how he structured it so they could walk away painlessly if necessary.

However, Dominik didn’t really acknowledge that pesky detail of forking over a valuable 2013 first-round draft pick and a 2014 third- or fourth-round pick for Revis. [read more]

Bucs Trying To Rework Revis Pact

March 10th, 2014

F

Now this makes sense to Joe. Yes, Twitter has totally blown up this evening with the news that the Bucs were looking to trade all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis and, minutes later, seemed on the verge of cutting Revis.

One of two Bucs to play in January’s Pro Bowl, Revis has a monster contract that the Bucs, if reports are true, don’t like. But the contract also means few if any teams can afford Revis. [read more]

March 10th, 2014

darrelle revis 1102

Rumors have been flying the past 20 minutes or so and are now into a five alarm fire mode with the immediate future of Bucs all world cornerback Darrelle Revis. First it was the Bucs were uncomfortable with Revis’ contract, then it was the Bucs were pushing to trade him, and now the Bucs are going to release him. [read more]

Report: Bucs Trying To Trade Revis Quickly

March 10th, 2014

RevispickUpdate 9:16 p.m.: Adam Schefter is now reporting Revis will be cut Wednesday afternoon if he’s not traded.

It’s no surprise there’s demand across the NFL for Darrelle Revis, and it’s no surprise trade chatter is heating up as the clock ticks toward the sounding of the free agency dinner bell. [read more]

“Speed In Space” Is Top Of Mind

March 10th, 2014

Rampant rumors of Chiefs free agent speedster/versatile slot receiver and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster heading back home to Tampa Bay are no surprise.

And it’s not because the Bucs are downright desperate for a No. 3 receiver after the Kevin Ogletree debacle. [read more]

Defensive End Market Stabilizing

March 10th, 2014

lovie smith 0113Word from Seattle media says former Bucs sackmaster turned Seahawks sacks leader Michael Bennett served his team up a hometown discount.

Bennett’s contract is said to be for $28.5 million over four seasons, with $16 million guaranteed. That’s good news for the Bucs, especially after the Vikings served up bigger cash for production-challenged Everson Griffen. [read more]

Cross Michael Bennett Off Wish List

March 10th, 2014
Former Bucs sackmeister and current Seattle DE Michael Bennett Twittered out this photo of his signing a contract extension with the Super Bowl champs this afternoon.

Former Bucs sackmeister and current Seattle DE Michael Bennett Twittered out this photo of his signing a contract extension with the Super Bowl champs this afternoon.

If Joe had one wish this free agent season (that’s a new term Joe just coined: free agent season) it was that Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett be scooped up by new Bucs general manager Jason Licht. That way, Licht would have righted a terrible wrong when last year Bennett, who led the Bucs in sacks in 2012, was allowed to walk away for no good reason.

Alas, that is not going to happen. The Seahawks weren’t that dumb. [read more]

Lovie Smith all but promises a quarterback competition come training camp

This may not sit well with the Mike Glennon Mob: Bucs head coach Lovie Smith isn’t exactly pro-Glennon but he’s not exactly anti-Glennon either. Lovie wants the best quarterback to start and that guy may not be on the roster.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Lovie told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times there may be a quarterback who the Bucs feel is the starter of the future.

Report: Data Guru, Johnny Football Man Hired

March 10th, 2014

johnny football 0110Credible buzz flying around the Interwebs has known spreadsheet guru Tyler Oberly now on the Buccaneers staff as “manager of analytics,” so his Twitter feed claims.

It’s no surprise to learn NFL teams are diving deep into stats looking for an edge, but quarterback-hungry Joe finds it notable that Oberly just left his longtime gig at TheSidelineView.com, which does extensive draft analysis and considers Johnny Football the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft. Lamarr Houston And The Bucs

March 10th, 2014
Yet another defensive end who has talent but lacks results is propped up as a fit for the Bucs.

Yet another defensive end who has talent but lacks results is propped up as a fit for the Bucs.

Just about every guy who can sneeze on a quarterback and is a free agent or an eligible draft pick has been linked to the the Pewter Pirates.

Bucs coach Lovie Smith knows for his defense to work at all, and for the defense to rise from the ashes of the Bill Sheridan Dancing Stunts debacle, the Bucs simply must have a pass rush.

Would Aaron Donald Fit?

March 10th, 2014

Draft junkies know University of Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s stock has been rising significantly. Even reasoned, brilliant NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock bumped up Donald from No. 3 to No. 1 on his positional rankings last week.

The guy can rush the passer, and that’s what Lovie Smith wants. [read more]
