Drafting Two Receivers

Sunday, April 20th, 2014
Could Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks be on the Bucs' radar?

Could Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks be on the Bucs’ radar?

There is no question the Bucs need a receiver after trading mattress-in-the-yard, stripper-pole-owning (allegedly), blade-in-the-thigh Mike Williams to Buffalo. Shoot, Joe was thinking the Bucs would draft a receiver, even if Williams was still on the roster.

With the draft lousy with receivers, starters, shoot, even Bucs multimedia guru Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com doesn’t discount the Bucs picking up two receivers next month. (more…)

Bucs An NFL Test Case?

Saturday, April 19th, 2014

lovie smith 0113Yes, Joe wrote earlier about how next week’s practices could alter the draft plans of the Bucs. Joe is sure Bucs coach Lovie Smith and his staff are more eager to see the players on the practice fields at One Buc Palace than the players are to get there. And the players are excited, from the half-dozen or so players Joe had a chance to speak with the past two weeks. (more…)

Kevin Norwood On Day 3?

Saturday, April 19th, 2014

Alabama’s TD maker could last

Everybody everywhere seems to be talking about the amazing depth among wide receivers available in the 2014 NFL Draft.

After the ousting of unorthodox mattress user Mike Williams in the aftermath of his brother stabbing him, the Bucs sure appear to be counting on this depth. (more…)

Next Week’s Practices Can Alter The Draft

Saturday, April 19th, 2014

johnthan banks 0828What if Lovie Smith is unimpressed by Johnthan Banks when he finally sees him on the practice fields of One Buc Palace next week?

Suppose coaches are wowed in drills by healthy, hungry returns of DaQuan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn?

And if Eric Page has the dropsies? (more…)

Gerald McCoy Going Back To High School

Saturday, April 19th, 2014
gerald mccoy 0305

Back to school.

Yes, there is no question the Bucs wanted to overhaul the roster in the offseason. As Bucs coach Lovie Smith was fond of saying over and over again at the NFL Combine, whenever he spoke of a specific player, he would always add, “… but we were 4-12.”

With 19 new players and the draft hasn’t even happened yet, it’s pretty drastic turnover. For one Bucs stud, it’s something akin to old times. (more…)

Josh McCown Not Bad At Hoops

Saturday, April 19th, 2014
Josh McCown the hoopster.

Josh McCown the hoopster.

Joe posted the following vidoe yesterday with some fans believing there is something sinister lurking in the background. Not true. All cool.

This NFL-sanctioned video shows Anquan Boldin of the 49ers holding a charity basketball game in his hometown of Pahokee (FSU types will get a kick out of his interaction with a young Gators fan). Among the two NFL players featured in the video is Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall and Bucs quarterback Josh McCown. (more…)

Dominik Has Little Faith In Bridgewater

Friday, April 18th, 2014

TCDominik11Given the widespread disdain for the scouting talents of former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik, Joe suspects the following will have some Bucs fans wanting to draft quarterback Teddy Bridgewater immediately.

Dominik took to the BSPN airwaves today to pour a bucket of cold water on Bridgewater’s potential. (more…)

“It Was Always Uptight”

Lavonte David talks about the difference between Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith.

Lavonte David talks about the difference between Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith.

There is a long list of casualties of college coaches who came to the NFL and either wore out their welcomes or just plain flopped. The recent success of Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh had, then-Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik and Team Glazer hopeing there was a trend and they were hopping on the bandwagon. (more…)

Drafting A Wide Receiver

Friday, April 18th, 2014
Might FSU WR Kelvin Benjamin be too heavy and too inconsistent for the Bucs?

Might FSU WR Kelvin Benjamin be too heavy and too inconsistent for the Bucs?

Yes, the Bucs need a receiver. It’s even more important than ever to draft one after the trading of mattress-in-the-yard, blade-in-the-thigh, stripper pole-owning (allegedly) Mike Williams. Joe would fall over backwards if the Bucs didn’t draft a wide receiver at some point three weeks from now.

A lot of people are banging a drum for Texas A&M’s Mike Evans, who is basically a clone of Vincent Jackson. Joe loves the guy but, with a draft so deep in wide receivers, taking Evans at No. 7 is a reach when there are so many other strong wide receivers that can be had later in the draft for better value. (more…)

Casillas The Leader

Friday, April 18th, 2014
Jonathan Casillas

Jonathan Casillas

An interesting nugget dropped by lean-looking Mason Foster to media this week referenced his fellow starting linebacker from 2013, Schiano-man turned Lovie-man Jonathan Casillas.

Casillas is healthy now after minor knee surgery last fall, and Foster explained Casillas is currently the lead dog in the Buccaneers’ linebackers room. (more…)

Gruden: Coaching Will Make Johnny Football

Friday, April 18th, 2014
Grudenlook

Gruden is sold, provided the coaching is right.

Father Dungy, longtime mentor and friend of Lovie Smith, already has expressed his faith in Johnny Football.

Now Bucs icon Chucky is taking his Johnny Football love a step further than his usual I-love-everybody rhetoric. Chucky, as chronicled by NFL.com, is all but guaranteeing Johnny Football’s success if he gets strong coaching. (more…)

Joe Talks Sammy Watkins Fetish, Draft Strategy, Tampa-2 & More

Friday, April 18th, 2014

The intensity is heating up on the weekly JoeBucsFan Hour on WDAE-AM 620. Joe joined Steve Duemig last evening for the weekly showdown, and all kinds of heated Bucs discussion was on the table. Enjoy!

Derrick Brooks And The Hall Of Fame

Friday, April 18th, 2014

derrick brooks 0201aAll NFL fans like Joe are chomping at the bit for the draft get to here. It is 20 painful days away. Can’t get here soon enough.

But there’s another event Bucs fans are drooling over to arrive, and we have all but forgotten about it while in the fog of endless mock drafts. That is the induction of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014, which takes place 15 weeks from tomorrow, Aug. 2. (more…)

High Flying Josh McCown

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Undaunted by the millions Connor Barth lost last year because he got hurt playing in a charity basketball game, new Bucs starting quarterback Josh McCown put on a basketball uniform recently to join Anquan Boldin and other NFL players in a hoops game for the Pahokee, FL, community.

NFL Fan Pass produced a highlight reel, and McCown is the featured baller. (more…)

Mocking Derek Carr And The Bucs

Friday, April 18th, 2014
Is Derek Carr a reach for the Bucs?

Is Derek Carr a reach for the Bucs?

Joe is convinced the Bucs will draft a quarterback next month in the NFL Draft. Whether it is Johnny Football in the first round, Derek Carr in the second around, Jimmy Garoppolo in the third round or Aaron Murray in the fourth round, Joe isn’t sure. Only time will tell.

Joe is willing to wager (but not much) that the Bucs will have a new quarterback come early May. (more…)

NFL Network: Bucs Primed For Round 1 QB

Thursday, April 17th, 2014

lovie and lichtSmokescreen or the pulse from a true insider?

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, who as a league employee has a pipeline to everyone in the NFL, was talking tonight about how the Bucs are thoroughly primed to draft a quarterback in the first round of next month’s draft. (more…)

Looking For Road Graders

Thursday, April 17th, 2014
Might the Bucs trade back and nab Notre Dame G Zack Martin?

Might the Bucs trade back and nab Notre Dame G Zack Martin?

Joe has typed several times over the past few weeks that he’s not all that enamored with the offensive line of the Bucs. Anthony Collins is a nice pickup and is a fine pass blocker, but Collins has never started eight games in a season much less 16. That is a red flag to Joe. (more…)

Mocking Gabe Jackson At No. 38

Thursday, April 17th, 2014

Gabe JacksonJoe realizes there are plenty of BSPN faithful among us, people who believe that if a BSPN mouthpiece says something, well, it’s as if Moses is talking at Mt. Sinai. It reminds Joe of those old EF Hutton TV commercials of his youth.

So in the spirit of the BSPNites, Joe will reveal the latest from helmet hair draft guru Mel Kiper, who behind a BSPN pay wall revealed his latest two round mock draft this afternoon. (more…)

Not Good Odds

Thursday, April 17th, 2014
How Jeff Tedford develops the offense will determine if the Bucs continue a nasty trend for teams that spend a lot in free agency.

How Jeff Tedford develops the offense will determine if the Bucs continue a nasty trend for teams that spend a lot in free agency.

Yes, the Bucs made a major splash last month when the team broke out the Team Glazer checkbook and ran out of ink, they were cutting so many checks. No team has overhauled its roster more with new signings and waving goodbye to old starters. (more…)

“Incredibly Difficult”

Thursday, April 17th, 2014

Greg Cosell of NFL Films weighs in on evaluating Johnny Football and finding a QB fit in the draft

The Buccaneers’ quest for a franchise quarterback (yes, Mike Glennon Mob, the team still yearns for one) is a puzzling effort for a few reasons:

First, offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford’s offense is a complete mystery. So the type of QB the Bucs covet is unknown. Second, Lovie Smith guaranteeing 34-year-old journeyman Josh McCown $5 million after cutting him a few years ago adds to the confusion. And third, it’s unknown what kind of commitment Lovie Smith is willing to make to the position.   (more…)

More Quarterback Freefall Nonsense

Thursday, April 17th, 2014

WR Odell Beckham at No. 7? Really?

In this Season of Smoke, aka the 10 weeks leading up the NFL Draft, it amazes Joe how expert analysts who quickly will tell you the NFL is a passing league all about quarterback play now somehow believe a long list of QB-needy teams will pass on a quarterback in the first round.

Joe puts no credence in this popular nonsense. Forget about the Bucs for a minute, Joe will be stunned if the Jaguars pass on a first-round QB with the No. 3 overall pick. (more…)

Josh Freeman’s Last Stand

Thursday, April 17th, 2014
atomic bomb

Joe expects an ugly ending in some way between clock-challenged Josh Freeman and Giants drill sergeant coach Tom Coughlin.

When Joe learned yesterday that former Bucs outcast quarterback, leaky, sleepy Rip Van Freeman, was signed by the Giants, Joe laughed for about five minutes. To Joe, this transaction is either a desperate attempt to revive a freefalling NFL career or a sinister power move by a suit with the Giants. (more…)

Doug Williams No. 5

No. 5 Bucs player of all time?

A fun countdown that Pat Yasinskas has on ESPN.com is the “top five” Bucs of all-time. Not that long ago, one would have been hard-pressed to come up with five off the top of one’s head.

Now, one has to think long and hard who would be in the top five of all-time Bucs. To start the fun, Yasinskas has former quarterback Doug Williams as No. 5. (more…)
