High Flying Josh McCown

April 18th, 2014

Undaunted by the millions Connor Barth lost last year because he got hurt playing in a charity basketball game, new Bucs starting quarterback Josh McCown put on a basketball uniform recently to join Anquan Boldin and other NFL players in a hoops game for the Pahokee, FL, community.

NFL Fan Pass produced a highlight reel, and McCown is the featured baller.

Here’s the video. There’s not exactly lockdown defense being played, but you’ll get a different look at McCown and his athleticism, which Lovie Smith has told reporters will surprise them on the football field.

The athleticism Lovie speaks of scares Joe a bit. Frankly, if McCown is the starter (he turns 35 in July), then Joe doesn’t want to see him out of the pocket too often. The odds of him holding up for a 16-game season with that kind of playing style are flimsy.

Yes, the same goes for a rookie quarterback like Johnny Football or Teddy Bridgewater. But Father Time can’t be beaten, and McCown is on the wrong end of that battle.

    Better carry 3 QBs…..

  2. stanglassman Says:

I would love to see Gleenon in that game. I hear he is working on his mobility, we all know how QBs get more mobile as they get older.

  3. Gus Jackson Says:

He will have two backups this year. He should and can lay it all on the line!

  4. Gus Jackson Says:

And Mccown is a BALLER! His athleticism is underrated!

Bus will have 2 Q’S start this season.. Lovie is a great cpach, but I highly doubt he can get us over .500 his first season .

You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.

Don’t think, feel! It is like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.

Say what you will about Mc Gowan but he can ball for a 34 year old QB. Nothing wrong with his athleticism.

  10. knucknbuc Says:

Their searching for an athletic qb that’s why glennon isn’t in their plans. Everything they have said points to an athletic qb one that can pick up a first down with his legs at points, glennon unfortunately isn’t good at that. He’s also not good on bootlegs or rollouts because of his slowness. Imo he doesn’t fit the offense and what lovie and tedford are trying to do.

    Pass on Bridgewater!

Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.

I didn’t think some charity event would make me like McCown more hahahah

    Stanglassman,

Glennon is 24 years old. You don’t think it’s possible for him to physically develop further?

Lol I could understand if he was 34, like our current starter.

    Lol c’mon man!

  15. bee Says:

    He can ball…lol

I remember several years ago when Luke McCown was on the team, there was an interview with Josh Johnson where he was talking about how athletic Luke is and how he would destroy everyone at basketball, when teammates would play.

I’m still hoping for a QB in this draft (JFF and Garoppolo come to mind for me), but I think Josh will be a solid starter this season, helping to bridge the transition between himself and the new rookie QB.

  17. Lev Says:

Holy crap he looks really athletic lol

  18. stanglassman Says:

Yes I do believe MG8 can and will learn to step up in the pocket better. Add some muscle and fill out his frame in order to become more durable for the hits he will take in this league and that’s good but I’m Sorry but you can’t teach speed and quickness. There is nothing wrong with Glennon he would fit well in a New England or Denver style offense but that’s just not the direction we are going. I don’t understand why people take it so personally.

  19. Architek Says:

This dude is a superb athlete and he will bring a great feel to our offense.

  20. pick6 Says:

regarding who succeeds mccown, if mobility is a job requirement, it isn’t an unteachable skill. it’s not the same as speed, or scrambling. it mainly means getting your mechanics set to be able to roll (not sprint, not jitterbug) to your right or left and deliver a ball. you don’t need to be mike vick to move the pocket around a little. most QBs will never rack up 100 yards rushing, but that style has still never won a championship. however, glennon or any QB out there can use mobility as a weapon if they are willing to work at it.

  21. GlenninGrad Says:

Mikey was told not to rush just like Jfree because the regime had little trust in Dan the Man Orvlovsky

  22. stanglassman Says:

Yes pick6 that is what I was referring to when I mentioned MG8 will be able to learn better how to move in the pocket better hopefully. That will be useful but I think the Bucs are looking for a bit more than that from their Qbs in this offense. I’ll admit unlike most who post here I could be wrong. I’m going by what Tedford has ask of his Qbs in his latest offenses and what the Bucs coaches have done and said since they got here. Don’t get me wrong I think Mike G. will stay if we don’t get a QB in the first 5 rounds. Basically Carr (1st late or whenever), Jimmy G. 2nd, or Murray 3rd ( I don’t think he will be there much past the mid 3rd round). I came into this draft months ago thinking Teddy B. was the best of the QBs in the draft but after the bad pro day and all the hate on this commit board is making me think twice.

  23. Shawnbucfan Says:

    That’s nothing can he “Pull”

  24. stanglassman Says:

If you looked like that and were happily married with a child you wouldn’t ask that stupid question. What is it with THIS immature obsessive boorish question all the time. Anyone who ask this obviously doesn’t know how to speak to a women let along treat them.

  25. tmaxcon Says:

    stanglassman

not all women want to be treated the same way. taking it way to serious this fine friday afternoon. enjoy your weekend.

  26. Ernest T. Bass Says:

JMac throwing it down!! He’s athletic as hell!! If the Bucs take an athletic QB next month, MG8 is toast.

  27. BigMacAttack Says:
