Where’s The Beef?

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

BY IRA KAUFMAN

Dirk Koetter must feel like heading off to Vegas right about now.

The way Koetter’s fortunes are running, he’d walk away from the tables hoarding enough chips to fill a tackling dummy. With one month left before the season opener in Miami, the best adjective to describe Bucs training camp is a word any NFL head coach would love to apply this time of the year.

Uneventful. (more…)

Ryan Fitzpatrick & Brad Johnson Talkin’ Jameis

Monday, August 7th, 2017

BY IRA KAUFMAN

When he’s through slinging footballs, Ryan Fitzpatrick could make a smooth transition to the insurance business.

Farmers Insurance.

Yes, he knows a thing or two because he’s seen a thing or two. (more…)

Tampa Bay’s only Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, Ira busts out columns here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and his award winning podcasts fire Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BY IRA KAUFMAN

The facts are in and the conclusion is uncommonly clear.

Malcolm Glazer was a badass.

Don’t be fooled by the red beard, the specs and a belt buckle worn unusually high. The late owner of the Buccaneers would have been very proud of this confident football team and Dirk Koetter’s aggressive approach. (more…)

Gruden’s Emotional & Dreamy Return — Today

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017

BY IRA KAUFMAN

Bob LaMonte won’t be in the audience during Jon Gruden’s Ring of Honor news conference this afternoon, but he sure was there when it counted.

Right at center stage.

There were a lot of contributors and factors in 2002, as Gruden was pried out of Oakland a year early. Al Davis received the price he wanted, Jim McVay was a valuable go-between and the Glazers weren’t about to return from the West Coast without a head coach to replace Tony Dungy. (more…)

Jacquizz Will Set The Bar

Tampa Bay’s only Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, Ira busts out columns here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and his award winning podcasts fire Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BY IRA KAUFMAN

He’s easy to overlook — and that would be a big mistake.

It’s fashionable to underestimate Jacquizz Rodgers and his potential role on the 2017 Buccaneers. But if you get past his 5-foot-6 frame, Rodgers will have an opportunity to play a huge role in shaping Dirk Koetter’s ground game this fall.

And as Koetter likes to remind his campers, it’s all about opportunity. (more…)

Before he’s through tinkering at One Buc Place, Jason Licht may be responsible for drafting more than 100 players. I’ve got a feeling he has already signed off on the most rewarding pick he’ll ever make as an NFL executive.

Kwon Alexander wasn’t even supposed to start as a rookie in 2015. The undersized linebacker out of LSU was supposed to contribute on special teams and perhaps push Danny Lansanah a bit on the strong side. (more…)

Drowning Out The “Elevator Music”

Monday, July 24th, 2017

BY IRA KAUFMAN

Dirk Koetter has had more than a month to devise a speech welcoming the 2017 Bucs to training camp.

It ought to be a doozy.

All it took was one season as an NFL head coach for Koetter to earn a reputation as a master of mind manipulation. It’s a little tougher when you’ve got 90 minds to meld, but it’s critical that Koetter sets the right tone this week while those Hard Knocks cameras are whirring away. (more…)

Oh, and here’s Joe’s favorite moment of Ira’s tenure at JoeBucsFan.com. At the 2017 NFL Draft Party, hosted by The Commish, Ira showed the Stick Carriers how they do shots back in Brooklyn. The ol’ pound it and launch the cup. L’chayim!

Television Siege

Wednesday, July 19th, 2017

BY IRA KAUFMAN

Those Hard Knocks cameras will roll soon at One Buc Place looking for compelling story lines.

HBO considers itself a cutting-edge network, and you’d better be provocative if you’re asking TV viewers to pony up extra cash for your programming.

This is the network that gave you a scathing documentary about Scientology, Chris Rock’s no-holds-barred comedy specials and a dramatic look behind Phil Spector’s murder trial. (more…)

The Youngest Stud

Monday, July 17th, 2017

BY IRA KAUFMAN

Even if Tom Brady won’t admit it, quarterbacks don’t last forever.

These guys aren’t lifetime cases like Supreme Court justices. There’s an expiration date on every pro athlete, and the men under center are no exception.

Sometime in the not too distant future, a changing of the guard will take place in the NFL and youth will be served.

The remarkable Mr. Brady is 39. Mr. Brees is 38. Big Ben and Philip Rivers are 35.

Aaron Rodgers is 33, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan are 32. (more…)
