For a while there, Joe was happy. Bucs fans were giddy. It was because the Bucs had an offense that was humming. It was neat to finally see.
First there was rookie quarterback Mike Glennon making a case to be the unchallenged incumbent starter for the 2014 season. Then there was the running game with replacements Mike James and Bobby Rainey. [read more]

Commander Schiano talks about a “positive side effect” to the “pain”
How about the best defense in the NFL double teaming an undrafted free agent rookie tight end out of, all together now, Rutgers!
That’s got Greg Schiano jacked up about what’s in store for his tight end corps in 2014.
Speaking last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network [read more]

It should be a darn fun afternoon on WDAE-AM 620. At 5 p.m. today, Greg Schiano joins the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, for a man-to-man chat about all things Bucs.
Duemig has been a harsh critic of the head coach and called for his head following the loss to the Jets. So Joe’s gotta give Schiano credit for taking on this interview. Joe will be glued to his radio, and you should be, too.

This is a few days old but Joe stumbled upon this last night and knows readers will be interested. Bucs commander Greg Schiano stepped into the tabernacle of “The Pope,” Mike Francesa, of WFAN-AM in New York. Not a whole lot of new ground here other than Schiano explains why he hasn’t yet given his side of the leaky Rip Van Freeman saga, and what Bucs player he would never trade. Greg Schiano served up a passionate case for an NFL rule change last night.
“There is no foul for defensive pass interference. The ball was intercepted in front of the contact.”
Those were the words barked by referee Ron Winter during the third quarter of the Bucs-Panthers game Sunday. Trailing 17-6, and driving on their own 46 yard line, the Bucs threw deep on 2nd-and-1 to Vincent Jackson. The zebras flagged Panthers cornerback Drayton Florence for holding Vincent Jackson as he came back for the underthrown ball. [read more]

It’s always a big perception and trend game in the NFL.
About five weeks ago, there was national chatter that college coaches seeking NFL head coaching gigs next month would be shunned by owners leery of Chip Kelly’s rocky start and Greg Schiano’s implosion. Today, that chatter has flipped with Kelly’s Eagles (7-5) leading the NFC East and Schiano guiding a Bucs resurrection.
And that brings us to Mike Glennon, whose job security has to benefit from the meteoric rise of Philadelphia starting quarterback Nick Foles. [read more]

There’s not a lot of good to take out of the seal-clubbing the Stinking Panthers performed on the Bucs Sunday. On the flip side, there is plenty to learn from and correct.
And Bucs commander Greg Schiano was stunned by one of those elements. Schiano prides himself in his teaching of fundamentals, defensive fundamentals more than anything. Yet, those treasured skills vanished against the Stinking Panthers. [read more]

You saw it. Joe saw it. The football world saw it.
Early in the game last night, which turned out to be a belt-whipping that the Seahawks unleashed on the Saints, Cliff Avril, who many in the offseason thought was running on a dry tank, stripped Drew Brees with Michael Bennett grabbing the loose ball out of the air and rolling 22 yards for a touchdown. Joe loves this photo of a rare edge rush by Jonathan Casillas
Greg Schiano told a hell of a story tonight on WDAE-AM 620 about the knee injury Sunday that claimed linebacker Jonathan Casillas’ season. Casillas needs surgery and is headed to injured reserve.
Schiano painted a picture of a warrior-like Casillas, who played on the knee after injuring it without telling the coaching staff.
Schiano also detailed how big a loss Casillas will be. [read more]

Greg Schiano and his supporters are going to have to forgive Joe here for dropping the dreaded “Q” word.
Joe is still in a state of shock over the end of the Raheem Morris administration, when the Bucs clearly rolled over for a belt-whipping over and over again. Serial loafer Sean Jones is a fixture of Joe’s nightmares.
It’s because of that painful experience that Joe’s on high alert for signs of the Bucs quitting for Schiano. Yesterday and today, a red flag arose. [read more]

Joe wrote — perhaps prematurely on Twitter Sunday — when Bucs rookie quarterback Mike Glennon nailed Vincent Jackson in stride for a 60-yard pass inside the red zone, which should have resulted in points, that Joe was sold on Glennon as an NFL quarterback (not sure, yet, if he will be elite).
Funny thing is, the Bucs never got points off of that play because Glennon fumbled the ball away. [read more]

Winning the turnover battles means two things this season. Joe explains.
One great mystery of this season that doesn’t involve sleepy, leaky Josh Freeman is how the Bucs are 3-9 with a +10 turnover ratio. That’s a true oddity in the NFL. It’s as rare as Joe getting a call from a cheerleader for an evening of clubbing and hot tubbing.
Winning or tying the turnover battle consistently means a winning record during a normal season.
In 2010, Raheem The Dream’s Buccaneers had a +9 turnover ratio and won 10 games. [read more]

It seems Darrelle Revis’ feelings might be hurt more than his chest/shoulder.
Revis dropped a sure interception and was burned for a TD by Ted Ginn, Jr., in Carolina yesterday. The Bucs’ $1-million-per-game cornerback left the game after the missed pick with a mysterious chest/shoulder issue that appeared painful.
Speaking moments ago at One Buc Palace, Greg Schiano said the injury to Revis doesn’t appear to be serious.
Keep Calm.

There is no question that the best linebacker for the Bucs is Lavonte David. He is playing at a Pro Bowl level and has been the best linebacker to put on a Bucs uniform since double-nickel, Derrick Brooks, roamed the sidelines.
In Joe’s eyes, the next best linebacker is Mason Foster. And not too far behind was a very under-the-radar signing of Jonathan Casillas at outside linebacker. But his immediate future with the Bucs is in jeopardy. [read more]

Joe always got a kick out of the little people who would ravage Bucs stud Gerald McCoy for not getting sacks but mock him for disrupting an offense.
These same simple minds apparently believe the lone job of a defensive lineman is to get sacks and nothing else matters.
Well, Joe is here to show you how much nonsense that is. [read more]

The Bucs averaging two points per third quarter is very troublesome
The Bucs offense in the second half of games is about as potent as Hugh Hefner without his little blue pills.
For some reason, the New Schiano Order Bucs open second halves like Raheem Morris’ teams typically started games. With such a consistent patter in place, how could it not be a coaching flaw in some way? Bad luck only goes so far. [read more]

Peter King offers a harsh critique of Darrelle Revis, Joe’s not sure it’s fair.
What felt like the impossible reared its ugly head during the Bucs-Panthers game yesterday. Darrelle Revis was beaten easily for a touchdown, by the not-so-immortal Ted Ginn, Jr.
Joe felt like he was kicked in the gut. Between that and Mike Glennon’s bizarre fumble, Joe felt like the Bucs were paying back the devil for their early Christmas gifts in Detroit.
Revis bit and jumped the double-move route and Ginn streaked for the end zone. Safety help over the top was about three steps late. [read more]
