Bucs Hire Parcells’ Old Offensive Line Coach

January 18th, 2014

Lovie Smith added more experience to his staff with today’s hiring of George Warhop as offensive line coach.

Glennon Talks Johnny Football, Bridgewater

January 18th, 2014

Glennon wonders whether Johnny is the next Russell Wilson, his former teammate.

Mike Glennon has a cousin working in Delaware radio, so it’s no surprise that the Bucs’ gunslinger took to the airwaves of WDSD-FM this week to chat.

Glennon talked about how confident he is after proving he can perform against the best defenses in the world and, of course, Glennon shared his admiration of guys he might compete with this spring, Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater. [read more]

Happy Birthday, Julius Peppers

January 18th, 2014

Joe realizes stud-edge-rusher-hungry Lovie Smith and Leslie Frazier could be satisfied going into 2014 with Adrian Clayborn as their lead dog at right defensive end. But Joe surely wouldn’t bet a nickel on that happening.

These guys want a beast who will command double-teams, strike fear into opponents, adeptly play off their star defensive tackle, and register double-digit sacks. [read more]

Bucs Have GM Favorites; Hickey Looks East

January 18th, 2014

GM candidate Jason Licht is a Bill Belicheat guy, just like Greg Schiano.

The Bucs don’t have a general manager. No problem. Lovie Smith is in charge.

The Bucs are still interviewing candidates. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, their search presses on with two favorites: Marc Ross and Jason Licht, executives with the Giants and Cardinals, respectively. Both were college players. Ross is a Princeton man, and Licht has twice worked for Bill Belicheat, last serving as Patriots director of pro personnel from 2009 to 2011.

Bucs director of player personnel Dennis Hickey, former rockstar general manager Mark Dominik’s right hand man, is still at One Buc Palace leading scouting efforts. But reports out of South Florida have him interviewing for the Dolphins’ vacant GM gig.

Turnovers Worthless Without Points

January 18th, 2014
turnover

Without scoring off turnovers, forcing takeaways is just about pointless.

One of the great axioms of football is that forcing turnovers will equal wins.

Bucs commander Greg Schiano turned the Bucs into a turnover-forcing team last season, yet the Bucs stunk, forcing the jettisoning of Schiano. [read more]

Tedford Is High On Johnny Football

January 17th, 2014

The Bucs’ OC doesn’t hold back

Akeem Spence Not The Worst

January 17th, 2014
akeem spence 0116a

Spreadsheeters don’t like Akeem Spence.

Oh, those spreadsheeters at Pro Football Focus, with only a couple of games this week, they have too much time on their hands and, thus, are playing with numbers.

In a breakdown of the best defensive tackles to get heat on the quarterback, Khaled Elsayed documented all NFL defensive tackles and came to the conclusion that J.J. Watt is the greatest. Joe has no problem with that. Watt is incredible. [read more]

King: Bortles + Tedford = Bucs Fit

January 17th, 2014

BortlesWhat the will the Bucs do at quarterback next season?

Surely Lovie Smith won’t go all-in with Mike Glennon when players return to One Buc Palace in 11 weeks. Somebody with as much or more promise than Glennon will join the roster this spring. [read more]

Kellen Winslow’s Fun At Target

January 17th, 2014

Joe doesn’t know where to begin — or end — when it comes to this NJ.com story about former Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow, aka DJ Toes On The Line.

It has all the necessary elements of intrigue and drama: a Target parking lot, Vaseline, fast-food chicken, a woman allegedly seeing his erect penis, drugs, law enforcement and NFL policy, all at 5:30 p.m.

And this was the guy in Josh Freeman’s ear for years.

Lay Off Donald Penn

January 17th, 2014

GlennonPennJoe’s always surprised when Bucs fans let loose rage and hate at Donald Penn.

These fans must be either taking Pro Football Focus stats as gospel and/or be prejudiced against fat people. Why? Because Penn absolutely was not the problem with the Bucs’ 32nd-ranked offense. [read more]

Romeo Crennel Likes Lovie Hire

January 17th, 2014
romeo

People think of coaches from the Tuna Parcells tree to be dour individuals with the personalities of angry gators, guys who are only concerned with how to win football games.

That’s not Romeo Crennel. The long-time NFL assistant, who worked with Parcells and Bill Belicheat in New England and had two unsuccessful stints as an NFL head coach, is good guy.

The affable Crennel genuinely wishes for his fellow NFL coaches to do well. One of those is Lovie Smith. [read more]

Bucs Land Experienced Tight Ends Coach

January 16th, 2014

There’s a lot of swagger and experience in Lovie Smith’s staff. Joe wrote about that earlier.

And today, the Bucs named their tight ends coach, Jon Embree, a former NFL player who got his start coaching in the league with the Chiefs in 2006. [read more]

“Yeah, This Guy Played; He Understands.”

January 16th, 2014

Joe’s confident no Buccaneers players will realize mild-mannered, even-keeled Leslie Frazier was a dancer and rapper in the world famous Super Bowl Shuffle video. It’s so hard to imagine Frazier willfully participating in one of most arrogant displays in professional sports history. [read more]

Adrian Clayborn Under The Microscope

January 16th, 2014
K

Might Stephon Tuitt replace him?

The Bucs need heat on quarterbacks in the worst way.

How badly? Well, Joe can only imagine it’s like being parched on a broiling July afternoon in dire need of a cold beer but finding himself trapped in a dry county.

When then-rockstar general manager Mark Dominik drafted Adrian Clayborn in the first round in 2011, the Bucs had high hopes for him at right defense. But the past two years have been pretty much a waste. [read more]

Tedford Has Identified Fixes For Glennon

January 16th, 2014

TedfordBucsThe last Bucs head coach swore that Mike Glennon was making receivers better because he was so darn accurate. Greg Schiano even took it a step further with a backhanded slap to Josh Freeman, saying Bucs receivers needed time to get used Glennon’s pinpoint throws.

But while Schiano was raving about Glennon’s accuracy, he strangely believed that quarterback mechanics were not something to be taught at the NFL level — even with a rookie, or even to sleepy, leaky, erratic Josh Freeman. [read more]
