Amanda Tynes Blasts Bucs

August 31st, 2013

amanda tynes

Oh, Joe just loves the unconditional love and defense that athletes’ wives have for their men. While the husbands have to choose their words carefully, the wives are unbridled.

Throw in social media, and it gets fun. Today, Bucs kicker Lawrence Tynes, who has both an ingrown toenail and a MRSA infection, learned of his fate with the Bucs and his wife Amanda was none too pleased.

@AmandaTynes9: The Bucs informed my husband via EMAIL that he will be placed on NFI. Wouldn’t expect anything more from such a classy organization. #blkout … NFI” is an injury/illness sustained outside or away from team related activities or facilities.

The NFL is and can be a cold, hard business. Joe is a bit surprised that Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik didn’t call Tynes’ agent to inform him of the news, assuming Tynes’ wife is accurate.

Joe appreciates Amanda Tynes’ loyalty, but there really is no way to know exactly where and how Tynes got infected.

Report: Lindell Wins Bucs’ Kicking Job

August 31st, 2013

Joe trusts NFL insider Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com, hence this is why Joe is running with Marvez’s report. Per the Miami-based writer and radio host for SiriusXM NFL Radio, Rian Lindell has bested Derek Dimke for the Bucs’ place kicker job.

Following his release by Buffalo earlier this month after 10 years there and 13 NFL seasons overall, Lindell was signed by the Buccaneers to press the untested Dimke during the preseason.

Lindell, 36, distanced himself from Dimke during Tampa Bay’s preseason finale against Washington. Dimke, a first-year player who hasn’t performed in a regular-season game, missed an extra point and 45-yard field goal attempt.

Lindell is the third kicking option for Tampa Bay since Connor Barth suffered a season-ending Achilles’ tendon injury during a July charity basketball game. The first replacement was former New York Giant Lawrence Tynes, who later became sidelined by a MRSA staph infection that has landed him on the non-football injury list.

This is a bit surprising to Joe because in the locker room after the game against Washington, players were saying goodbye to Lindell. despite kicking a 50-yarder against the Skins. Apparently, the former Bills kicker was of the impression he wasn’t making the cut?

Say what you will about Lindell, but his kicking percentage in Buffalo, one of the toughest places for a place kicker, was pretty darned good. That gives Joe hope.

Talking Bucs; Awaiting Cuts

August 31st, 2013

In the aftermath of the Bucs’ loss to the Redskins in the preseason finale, Joe talked all things Bucs yesterday with former Bucs guard Ian Beckles on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620.

Enjoy the Bucs chatter while Joe and Bucs fans wait for the final 53-man roster to announced this afternoon.

“Our Worst Tackling Game In A Long Time”

August 31st, 2013

Details. Details. Details. They’re the hallmark of the New Schiano Order.

Greg Schiano stands out among NFL coaches for how much the Bucs work on the fundamentals of tackling daily. Tha’s a damn good thing, Joe believes, and it likely was a significant factor in the Bucs’ No. 1 rush defense last season.

Tackling, however, didn’t show up against the Redskins on Thursday, as most Bucs fans have now seen following last night’s initial local TV broadcast of the game. The fundamentals breakdown troubled Joe. Even if you’re a second- or third-teamer, you should be able to tackle, future beer truck drivers included.

Schiano called the effort “our worst tackling game in a long time,” in the Buccaneers Radio Network audio below. Schiano also goes into some of his impressions of Thursday — positive and negative. And Schiano raves about the competition within the Bucs, which he says will make today’s final cut difficult.

As for the tackling, Joe thinks that’s the least of the Bucs’ worries. This was a sound tackling team last season, and Joe suspects it should be at least that good again. Hopefully, the Bucs will find someone to make up for Michael Bennett’s numerous tackles for loss.

Still No Opening Day QB For Jets

August 30th, 2013

The popular “Loudmouths” series on SNY-TV out of New York tackles the messy latest in the Jets QB saga. The Bucs and Jets kick off in 8 1/2 days.

“But This Guy’s Not Your Typical Rookie”

August 30th, 2013

Hmm, let the speculators unite. Greg Schiano spoke this afternoon and acknowledged Mike Glennon’s rough night last night, but Schiano made sure everyone listening knew he thinks Glennon is a standout player.

“I thought he was solid. I thought he learned, got better,” Schiano said of Glennon’s preseason. “Last night wasn’t his best performance, and I told him, ‘Hey, every once in a while, you’re going to have one of these. Don’t have too many.’ But this guy’s not your typical rookie. That’s, you know, he didn’t have a great night.”

The “not-your-typical-rookie” line could be a window into Schiano’s mindset. The leader of the New Schiano Order is a man of details, so surely praise that high is worth noting.

It’s especially notable when, frankly, Glennon has looked like a typical rookie quarterback through training camp and preseason, though he does appear quite composed when things don’t go well. Also, it’s worth noting that Schiano often characterizes likely starters Akeem Spence and Johnthan Banks as making typical rookie mistakes when talking about their development, as if to say they’re typical rookies despite their strong play.

If Glennon isn’t a typical rookie, then what is he in the coach’s mind? And what does that mean?

Dan Orlovsky’s quotes the other day all of a sudden seem more meaningful.

Joe hopes this is all moot, and that Josh Freeman can beat back the Mike Glennon Mob with a great opening day and consistent play.

You can hear Schiano’s full audio today below, via WDAE-AM 620.

Listen To The Bucs

August 30th, 2013

As one may expect, Joe has loads of audio from his good friends at WDAE-AM 620 and the Buccaneers Radio Network out of the Bucs locker room last night after the final game of the listless 2013 preseason.

Included in the audio files are quarterback Mike Glennon, running back/cornerback Mason Robinson, wide receiver/kick returner Eric Page, running back Doug Martin, linebacker Najee Goode, linebacker Jonathan Casillas, cornerback Johnthan Banks, guard Davin Joseph, left tackle Donald Penn and defensive end Da’Quan Bowers.

Again, the audio is courtesy of Joe’s good friends at WDAE-AM 620 and the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“Significant” Ankle Sprain For Crabtree

August 30th, 2013

Today’s news on starting tight end Tom Crabtree was, as expected, bad. Greg Schiano said Crabtree suffered a “significant” ankle sprain.

Joe wrote about the injury last night. Given that Crabtree was carted off the field, Joe can’t see him returning in September. Schiano didn’t offer a timetable.

Joe sees this as an opening for TE Danny Noble to stick around and try and prove himself again at tight end. Noble surprised and made the opening 53-man roster last season before getting injured midway through the season.

He’s done some good things this preseason and Joe remembers Josh Freeman raving about him. Joe also has a little intelligence that says Noble’s stock is rising.

Now this is nothing to get excited about. Luke Stocker played last night and should be able to handle the starting tight end job. The Bucs were looking at Crabtree as a potential weapon in the passing game, but he’s hardly essential.

Johnthan Banks Battling Rookie Life

August 30th, 2013

The cornerback likely to be tested over and over and over again when Darrelle Revis returns to the lineup on opening day, Johnthan Banks, has done great things this preseason but also has shown the world he’s a rookie.

Last night delivered another one of those rookie moments. Shortly after the opening whistle, Redskins wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe caught a ball in front of Banks about a yard from the sidelines and then Briscoe proceeded to juke Banks to the outside and break the tackle. (Here’s the video.)

Unacceptable, but part of the development process.

And that’s really the key. Can Banks learn from his lessons? Aqib Talib has spent an entire career with plenty of talent but consistently allowing big plays. Banks doesn’t seem to have the raw talent of Talib, so he’s got to tighten up the fundamentals. Drew Brees will be in Tampa in 16 days.

Bowers Continues His Descent

August 30th, 2013

The freefall of Da’Quan Bowers troubles Joe most because of how he was evaluated by the regime. It”s just scary to swallow that the Bucs went so wrong on Bowers after so much time to scrutinize his every move.

Greg Schiano and his trusted advisors, including  Super Bowl–winning defensive line coach and defensive guru Butch Davis, worked with Bowers last season and this spring and decided Bowers was their man. A double-digit sack man, Greg Schiano said, who re-worked his body during a brilliant and focused recovery from a blown Achilles in April 2012.

But Bowers struggled out of the gate in training camp. His conditioning was a problem and his play was bad. Bowers readily admits both and says he didn’t really get how demanding training camp would be because he was limited or missed the previous two in his pro career. Huh? Hello in there!

Despite Schiano recently saying Bowers needed to build up his reps in preseason to transition into an every-down player, Bowers’ playing time and prominence seemingly has taken a punch to the gut.

Last night against the Redskins, Bowers did not start but came off the bench. Adrian Clayborn had the night off, and Daniel Te’O-Neshiem and Trevor Scott got starting nods. Bowers was a situational player– in the fourth preseason game. He was hardly a stud against the Redskins’ backups.

There’s plenty of time for 23-year-old Bowers to turn it around. But there’s little reason to think that will happen with some sort of flick of a switch on opening day.

Plant Page On The Roster

August 30th, 2013

Joe had a discussion with other Bucs scribes last night at halftime of the awful mess that was the loss to the Redskins to put Bucs fans out of their preseason misery.

The question debated: Who will be a surprise cut?

Joe suggested Kevin Ogletree. Most of the scribes jumped back in their chairs in disbelief. “How could you cut him? The Bucs need a No. 3 receiver? Underwood isn’t totally healthy yet,” they exclaimed.

Well, Joe cautioned, Tiquan Underwood, last year’s No. 3 receiver, did not make the Bucs’ 53-man, opening-day day roster. Joe’s argument that Ogletree could be a surprise cut is as follows: what good is a receiver if he cannot catch the ball? And if Ogletree has stood out for anything this summer, it is his ability to impersonate Michael Clayton, which he did again Thursday night. Yeah, Ogletree gets open, but he drops those same passes. What’s the point?

Wide receiver Eric Page will be the Bucs’ return man and also could get into the receivers mix. Already getting public pats on the back from Bucs coach Greg Schiano, Page all but cemented his spot on the roster with a 105-yard kickoff return last night. Yeah, the kickoff was called back on a penalty, but since “Run Micheal Run” Spurlock was returning kicks for the Bucs, the Pewter Pirates have not had a dangerous return man like Page.

Chris Owusu may still be hurt. Underwood is banged up a little, and Ogletree is unable to carry his car keys for fear of them slipping through his hands. Joe’s pretty sure Page has more leverage for staying on the roster than Ogletree.

“That’s up to the coaches,” Page said. “I try to go out there and play, do the best I can. Right now I think I put some pretty good film together.”

On his triple-digit return, Page said, “The hole opened up and the wedge cleared up right for me. All I had to do was run for the daylight and towards the end.”

“Preseason Is Preseason”

August 29th, 2013

Bucs svelte left tackle Donald Penn is not one to hold back his opinions. So after the ugly loss by the second- and third-teamers to Washington’s tonight, Penn wasn’t exactly dancing in the locker room.

“Preseason is preseason,” Penn said. As far as Penn was concerned, the foreplay of the NFL preseason was done. Finished. Over. Irrelevant. Matter of fact, the countdown clock to the start of the season in the New Jersey Swampalands had already begun ticking down for Penn.

“Preseason is over with,” Penn said. “We are focused on the Jets. I was focused on the Jets today because I wasn’t playing [Thursday]. I’m focused on the Jets. Preseason is the past. Looking forward to winning some games. I did some film study on my own [over the Jets] but I helped these guys out for the game today. Helped them out as much as I could, but we are getting ready for the Jets. Get ready for Jet Week.

“I’m excited to get it started. We feel fine. We feel great. We had a good week of practice. Getting everything started next week. Looking forward to it. Starting fresh tomorrow. I’m excited.”

Bucs Get Cornerback Injury They Can’t Afford

August 29th, 2013

Rookie cornerback Rashaan Melvin, a guy the Bucs are counting on, “tweaked a hamstring a little bit” tonight against the Redskins, so said Greg Schiano after the blowout loss.

Hamstring issues are rarely pretty and rarely disappear quickly.

Unfortunately, the Bucs are very thin at corner. In fact, this week Schiano said another injury at the position would damage the Bucs’ depth significantly. Danny Gorrer is recovering from groin surgery, and Anthony Gaitor was lost recently for the season with a blown knee. The loss of those two left the Bucs in a tough spot.

Yeah, Melvin is just an undrafted rookie, but he arguably is the Bucs’ fourth or fifth cornerback on the depth chart. In other words, he’s a guy who likely would get a lot of playing time when the Saints are in Tampa in 17 days running all kinds of high-pressure aerial assaults.

Joe’s hoping Melvin’s hammy is just a “tweak.” Otherwise, look for rockstar general manager Mark Dominik to pounce on the waiver wire when cuts go down across the NFL in the coming hours.

Could Bucs Have Found New RB?

August 29th, 2013

Bucs CB/RB was one of the few players who wore a smile on his face after the loss to Washington Thursday.

If Joe shouted the name “Mason Robinson” to you, Joe would guess you thought he might be a local radio broadcaster. Instead, he is a Bucs cornerback. From Rutgers. Naturally.

With the Bucs growing a bit thin in cornerback depth, Robinson was certainly a bubble guy and may have had a shot of making the practice squad. Well, Robinson’s chances of making the Bucs got a little better tonight. But not because of a rash of injuries to cornerbacks.

Robinson may have a shot of making the Bucs because of dinged up running backs. Yes, running backs.

Peyton Hillis suffered a sprained ankle. Mike James has an eye injury. No knowledge of how severe the injuries are but they were severe enough that the Bucs ran out of running backs and turned to Robinson.

“The last time I had carries in a game? May have been my sophomore year in college,” Robinson told Joe after tonight’s game.

Bucs commander Greg Schiano had recruited Robinson to Rutgers as a running back but the New Jersey native was flipped to cornerback. Robinson had played some running back for the Bucs on the scout team in practice. So when he was drafted by Schiano to play running back tonight, Robinson jumped at the chance.

“It wasn’t really an order, but he wasn’t asking,” Robinson said when Schiano had him take the field with the Bucs’ offense.

Robinson had nine carries, totaling 12 yards with his longest being four yards.

Robinson was looking at the experience as a positive. He knows he is on the bubble but now he knows that he actually has some tape floating out there that he can play running back in a pinch, as well as cornerback. The more versatile a player can be, the better chance of keeping a job, or finding a new one.

Effort, Tackling, Execution Were Issues

August 29th, 2013

So what does Greg Schiano think about what happened in the Bucs’ blowout loss to the Skins tonight?

Well, Joe asked several Bucs just how seriously Schiano takes these preseason games. And Joe got similar takes. The head coach is focused on details and effort, nothing more.

“Well the score won’t be an indication of what he came in here and talked to us about,” linebacker Jonathan Casillas told Joe. “But it’s just the effort. The effort and the precision of what we’re doing. Are we detailed in our work? Were we physical enough? As you can see, probably not, the score indicates that, the rushing yards indicate that. But when we sit down and see the film tomorrow and correct some stuff, hopefully we’ll move in the right direction.”

Joe and every other Bucs fan hopes so, too.

In his postgame news conference, Schiano quickly referenced his team’s shoddy tackling when asked to assess the night’s performance.

Buccaneers didn’t make excuses, but Joe heard from a few players that practicing hard in pads the past two days, atypical of a game week, might have been a factor.

“We had a tough week so far. You know, what we did this week was not to prepare for a game,” Davin Joseph said. “It was hard on some of the guys tonight, being that we were in full pads yesterday. But our tempo in practice and what we’ve been working on is really to get better. It’s not to gameplan [for tonight].”

Oh, and then there’s the little fact that most of the starters, including all eight Pro Bowlers, didn’t play. It’s no excuse to look lousy, but its foolish to ignore.

Preseason Nightmare Is Over

August 29th, 2013

Rookie QB Mike Glennon was 7-for-16 for 63 yards tonight, plus a fumble and an interception.

Bring on the Jets in 10 short days!

The Bucs put on an ugly show for the hometown faithful tonight, minus the sweaty cheerleader dances. The Redskins manhandled the Bucs en route to a 30-12 victory.

Tom Crabtree was carted off with an ankle injury. Mike Glennon was horrendous. The pass blocking was miserable. The Bucs’ tackling gave Joe flashbacks to Sean Jones and Sabby The Goat. Special teams had massive issues in nearly all phases. And the Bucs’ sack total? Zero.

Throw in Kevin Ogletree looking like he gave up on a Glennon pass, and it was a very forgettable night.

Bright spots were linebacker kicker Rian Lindell drilling a 50-yard field goal with plenty of leg, Najee Goode’s pick-6 and Eric Page in the return game and flashing manhood over the middle as a receiver.

The best news is none of it matters.

Stick with Joe through the night for more on the game and stuff from the Bucs locker room.

Bucs Holding Their Breath On Crabtree

August 29th, 2013

Every NFL coach has the same goal in a preseason game: Stay healthy.

The Bucs couldn’t get that done tonight.

Lined up at fullback, as he’s done several times this preseason, tight end Tom Crabtree got his leg rolled up on while blocking and was carted off. The official word in the press box was “ankle injury.” If that’s accurate, it would be pretty darn rare to be carted off the field with a bad ankle and have it recover anytime soon.

It’s likely that Greg Schiano will update Crabtree’s condition tomorrow morning at his day-after-game news conference.

Crabtree appeared to have easily won the starting tight end job and was a key special teams player. Joe would be shocked if he plays against the Jets on opening day.

Schiano had recently acknowledged that the Bucs were running a tight-end-by-committee situation. That committee has now lost its chairman.

For The Virus You’ll Catch Tonight …

August 29th, 2013

Tonight’s Bucs-Redskins preseason game is blacked out. That means loads of Bucs fans will access dangerous unauthorized Internet feeds of the game. And yes, these feeds are loaded with viruses and all kinds of stuff that will take down your computer hard drive like Warren Sapp did quarterbacks.

Joe’s friends at GetFastData.com and PascoPC.com can save your data and fix your computer. These are very reputable companies offering spectacular rates and service.

Redskins At Bucs, Open Thread

August 29th, 2013

Well folks, as much as Joe looks forward to the start of training camp, Joe looks forward to the end of preseason. We are almost there.

But tonight, it is the beer truck drivers vs. the bouncers; insurance claims adjusters vs. used car salesmen; history teachers vs. janitors. In short, most of the players who will take the field tonight will be out of a job in three days.

Feel free to discuss tonight’s exhibition. Remember, as always, you may e-mail among yourselves illegally streamed video of tonight’s game. But posting said links here will get you run.

So enjoy the game. Enjoy. And thank a Bucs cheerleader (warmly) that the regular season begins in 10 days.

Gameday Tampa Bay

August 29th, 2013

Preseason Game 4

Redskins at Bucs

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

TV: Blacked out. WFLA-TV Channel 8 will broadcast the game on a tape-delayed basis Friday at 7:30 p.m. NFL Network will air the game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Radio: Buccaneers Radio Network (in Tampa WFUS-FM 103.5, and WDAE-AM 620); SiriusXM Channel 132.

Weather: Per Bobby Deskins of WTSP-TV, it looks like a nice night. After a warm afternoon for tailgates, temperatures should drop to 87 degrees at kickoff and continue to decline to the low-80s by the fourth quarter, all under a clear west-central Florida moonlit sky.

Odds: Per FootballLocks.com, Redskins -1.

Outlook: This game is for the Mike Glennon Mob. The rookie quarterback from North Carolina State and hero to a sizable number of local rabble will get his first start of his young pro career. If he plays well, he could solidify his quest to be a backup to Bucs franchise quarterback Josh Freeman. If Glennon plays well enough, Dan Orlovsky could see his days numbered, as many teams are allergic to carrying three quarterbacks.

Tonight’s game is mostly all about backups, with a couple of exceptions. Can Da’Quan Bowers, who seems to be in the penthouse of Bucs commander Greg Schiano’s doghouse, play well enough to reclaim a starting job that was all but gifted to him, as the Bucs made zero moves prior to training camp in an effort to bolster what was a miserable pass rush.

Also, can Gabe Carimi find the talent that got him an Outland Trophy? With Carl Nicks still down with the toe/MRSA and Davin Joseph only playing one preseason game in his rehab from knee surgery, Carimi’s play bears monitoring. He could very well see a lot of playing time if the aforementioned guards are not yet 100 percent.

Though Joe doubts it, there is always a chance Darrelle Revis could take the field for his first Bucs appearance. That won’t happen, Joe believes, but Schiano has not yet ruled that out.

Additionally, can Mike James establish himself as Doug Martin’s backup with a strong performance, or will it be Brian Leonard or perhaps Peyton Hillis?

These, among many other questions, could be answered tonight.

What’s The Weather?

August 29th, 2013

Going to the game tonight? Will there be rain? Will you roast under the late afternoon sun tailgating? Well, WTSP-TV meteorologist Bobby Deskins has your forecast here. Enjoy the game.

A Carimi Showcase; Another Bowers Chance

August 29th, 2013

Longtime sports anchor Dave Wirth dives into tonight’s Redskins-Bucs game in this WTSP-TV, Ch. 10 video.
