“It’s Absolutely Crazy To Me”

A former NFL star wags a finger at the Bucs' decision makers for jilting Jameis Winston.

A former NFL star wags a finger at the Bucs’ decision makers for jilting Jameis Winston.

Former NFL safety Rodney Harrison, owner of two Super Bowl rings, was known for being a big hitter and filled with nasty on the field.

Harrison lowered his head and laid another hit on the Bucs tonight, via NBC Sports Network.

Speaking on Pro Football Talk to Mike Florio, Harrison expressed his disbelief that the Bucs drafted Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, but didn’t find quick fixes for the 2014-dreadful unit in front of him.

“How do you draft a quarterback No. 1 or No. 2 and not make sure your offensive line is taken care of? It’s absolutely crazy to me,” Harrison said.

Joe suspects Jason Licht and Lovie Smith would disagree.

Tampa Bay officials believe they upgraded big time with rookie No. 34 overall pick Donovan Smith at left tackle. The regime will tell you Logan Mankins at left guard is a revitalized man possibly ready to regain his six-time, Pro Bowl glory. Bucs hierarchy will say Evan Smith is going to be better this year with an intelligent hungry battler next to him in rookie, Division III right guard Ali Marpet. And, last but not least, those Bucs decision-makers will say right tackle Gosder Cherilus, a former first-round pick, was a hell of a free agent pickup last month, a 100-game starter who had plenty of suitors.

So who is right, Harrison or the Bucs?

Answers are coming Sunday. The ugly answers provided during the “dress rehearsal” preseason game against the Browns don’t count.

I’ll say they at least addressed it, which is what matters! And hey did it with early picks- if they work out or not that’s up to the players and coaching

  2. bigsombrero Says:

What exactly should they have done? Sure they messed the o line up worse the year prior but at the time they drafted Winston, they did about all they could do. Should we have traded away more picks for o linemen other teams didn’t want anymore? Maybe over paid for another over the hill free agent?

I hate when analyst just throw out a blanket statement without substance. Can’t magically create pro bowl o linemen out of thin air Rodney.

  3. DallasBuc Says:

Harrison is right and all the homers are gonna piss on him for it. Two rookie experiments, two has beens and one never has been human turnsyle snapping the football to our #1 overall pick.

  4. Adambomb418 Says:

It’s funny how the OL is talked up in this article but in others not so highly.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The fact is…….is they didn’t do enough

……they most important position after QB was O line…..

…..reality sucks when it’s kicking you in the face!!

Thanks alot for screwing us Mr Head Coach and GM

Another horrible year for the offense again

    Bucs Ball anyone????

    Where’s Dungy at?????

    Lol

  6. Rob Says:

Joe Thomas is maybe the best LT in the game and Cleveland hasn’t had a QB since Otto Graham. No have they won anything. The point is, potential franchise QB’s don’t grow on trees and when one is available to a franchise like the Bucs, you have to take him.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The only thing they could have done differently would have been to spend a bunch of money on FAs…..that didn’t work last year….and it would keep our younger draftees from developing…..I think the way we went is better in the longer run.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

So much negativity without one meaningful game being played….that’s right this is JBF.

Oh wait now I’m starting to sound like SPBF.

  9. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Could you whiners wait for at least one game to be played before you organize the firing squad?

  10. lion Says:

Thank you Joe, finally some common sense. I’ve been hearing way too much bashing of the O-line from the national media lately, just because they had one bad showing in a preseason game. We can’t make any real judgements on how the line will look.

The Colts, Cowboys, Dolphins, Ravens all went 1-3 in the preseason, and the Steelers went 1-4 and the Rams 0-4, but you don’t hear any of these media folk bashing on those teams do you? Nope, they just say its the preseason relax, but when its the Bucs it’s like wow they lost a preseason game they must be a horrible team.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

Lovie has never beleaved you need a solid oline to win. Remember you only need defense and special teams to win 10 games. Laughable Lovie Smith’s own words. Not sure why anyone is surprised Lovie pays zero attention to oline and gambles with rookies and has beens. It’s always been his philosophy and choice to ignore it. Young Jameis will blossom under the new regime next year.

  12. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Dallas

Tell us something new. We all know you, Tmax, and Realist totally disrespect L&L. That’s not a post. You could simply type that out and cut and paste when needed.

What would you have done differently? Which FA or draft pick was out there that they missed. And please I know you’re too smart to bring up Lael Collins. He was NOT available.

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Tmax

Lovie pays zero attention to oline

And so last year he spent BIG on the wrong tackle in FA and drafted TWO OL.

This year he spends the 34th pick and another in the next round in the draft.
He or Licht sign the best FA tackle available a former 1st rounder with 100 game experience and widely considered the best available at that time.

See this is what I’m talking about when I say your Lovie hate is messing up your posts.

You can disagree with Lovie’s choices…but that statement you made is simply factually wrong. They absolutely have paid more attention to the OL than any other part of the team.

  14. cmurda Says:

So the Bucs spend the 2nd and 3rd round picks on OL. What more could have been done? If the Bus swing and miss with the best FA O Lineman, then the same complainers are jumping ship and condemning the organization for not building through the draft. Shut your pieholes and at least let a game that counts happen before blasting the O Line.

  15. cmurda Says:

    If the *Bucs* swing…

  16. Trubucfan22 Says:

Harrison got hit in the head too much. Is he insisting that we shouldnt draft a franchise qb, possibly the savior of tampa bay, because our o line sucks? Sorry but if you have the chance of getting a franchise qb you take him. No matter how bad your o line sucks.and the bucs did address the o line. It’s going to be better than last years version. No it isnt going to be a top 10 group, bit progress takes time. If nothing else the rookie is going to learn how to deal with a lot of pressure thtis year. That will only help his development down the road. 😉

  17. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Yeah the HatersofallthatisLovieSmith won’t let something like facts or complete stats get in the way of their bashing. The NegativeNancyDrews march to the beat of their own drums They remind me of Bill O’REILLY Rush Limburger and Glen Beck. A bunch of blowhards.

  18. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

    G-d help Jameis.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    StPete

First move Lovie should have made is let Koetter pick his own staff. Secondly everyone wants to give the regime credit for cutting it’s mistakes. well EDS should have been released or moved to guard he clearly can’t play center. I agree marpet and smith were nice additions and need to play to develop but look at the backups and tell me with a straight face they could not have found better options than a converted Dlineman and a below average backup center claimed via garbage collection. Warhop has been fired midseason by 49ers he was so horrendous. The trade for mankins was horrible he gave the bucs nothing last year and the regime is living in lala land if they think he found the fountain of youth and his knees will hold up. Preseason or nother mankins play and effort was pathetic… remember the golden rule never trade with belicheat you never win. Overpaying is what bad teams with bad coaches have to do to attract good football players. Warhop keeping his job is baffling bordering on negligence.

  20. vegabuc Says:

Maybe Mr Rodney Harrison should be talking about how many times he watch the Rams walk through tape before the superbowl and not try to criticize another franchise for trying to find a long term solution at qb. Any opinion that comes from any patriot or ex patriot since bill bellicheat doesn’t mean a (blank) to me.

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Tmax

I’ll give you Warhop as a questionable retention. And they certainly made a huge personnel mistake with Cousins…we’ll see about Mankins and EDS…but I’ll also concede based on last year’s play they were mistakes. If that continues this season then they’re simply mistakes…we’ll see.

Again I said feel free to disagree with their personnel decisions but you and Harrison are mistaken if you accuse them of neglecting the Oline. They’ve certainly addressed it but clearly not to your satisfaction.

  22. Architek Says:

You can’t rebuild a OL overnight – sounds like he’s fishing for clicks.

  23. DB55 Says:

Jameis Christ doesn’t need an oline bc he is all powerful. He can move defenders out of the way with a simple wave of his hand. Half Jedi half immortal tacklers will bounce off him and injure themselves if they actually make contact. He’s even able to kick a 75 yard FG if he had to, all while limping on one foot.

    #rejoice

  24. tmaxcon Says:

    StPeteBucsFan

At what point does a series of mistakes and bad choices cross into the neglect category…

  25. DB55 Says:

And if that doesn’t work he’ll go back in time and FIX IT.

  26. Lakeland Buc Says:

Hmmm, they didn’t do anything to upgrade their o-line? So they get rid of two starters and 3 other underperforming o-linemen.They spend two 2nd round picks on o-linemen, and they sign a vet with 100 career starts. But this is considered as ” doing nothing” according to Rodney Harrison. He probably don’t know anything about our draft, or our other signings. We have a new OC and a new QB coach, I think Joe is making fun of Harrison ignorance.

  27. Brian D. Says:

I believe this unit can run block. Doug is the key…

  28. OneLove Says:

    @DB55

He’ll also b!tch slap you across the face with his WANG after he steals your crab legs.

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “shake it off! shake it off!”

  29. Buc1987 Says:

DavidbigBucsFan..the HatersofallthatisLovieSmith are the same HatersofallthatisRaheemMorris and the HatersofallthatisGregSchiano. One in the same.

Yet they want the same results as you and I. They want wins.

  30. DB55 Says:

Never that one love never that.

  31. Dave Says:

This is a what I posted under the GOS article earlier today

    September 9th, 2015 at 10:06 am
So bringing in Mankins and Gos and having vets Dotson and smith and drafting 2 rookies isn’t addressing the line?
I’m concerned too but people are acting like they haven’t done a thing and expect 5 all pros already

Same people wanted Raheem gone after half a season and Schiano fired and Chucky gone etc….
Same people scream for new HC and OC and system every two years but then s team about rebuilding for several years.

I really don’t get the hate and negativity. Is it fun rooting for a team like that? I just have to believe these haters go through life half full, pessimistic and negative. It’s a sad way to live people.
Crack a Jai Lai open and enjoy life!!

  32. Dave Says:

More OL and DE in next draft.
Stability in keeping the GM, HC and OC

Stability. The key to every single HC/ great QB – dynasty (or at least damn good for the long term).
    Stability from the top down.
    JW needs that

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Dave…clearly you’re not the same Dave as this guy are you?

Year after Year I see the dorks on this site think the Bucs I mean Yucs will actually do something, I guess you people are delusional.. The Bucs suck have for 10 years now, will for another 10… Why?? First of all bad decision after bad decision, Jameis Winston will go down as the biggest bust in NFL History when it is all over, yes even ahead of Jamarcus Russel… The Bucs play in front of 40,000 at best per Sunday. Why? Because no one cares about the Bucs, everyone is this area has aliance to other teams… Our offensive line could not hold up against many college teams and it shows, 2 wins last year, 3 the year before, LMAO… Unstable environment and dysfunctional, 4 coaches in the last 7 years and 3 GMS… This team is no fun to watch they cant score, cant stop the run or pass and have below average players at every position but WR AND LB…. Yet you lonely people hang on to every Joe Bucs fam article and comment several times .. Kind of sad really, go make some friends, get a girl and go off the net…

  34. LargoSamIM Says:

    Hey DB55 –

What are you trying to do ? Get a job on JoeBucsfan as a third(?) opinion ? I enjoyed your post bro’ !!!

  35. DB55 Says:

    🙂

  36. LargoSamIM Says:

The Joe(s) continue to publish the most Winston-loving, rose-colored (in re: only that player) blog I have ever seen or could dream of ! The “Bucs” side of me really hopes Jameis turns out to be a good QB …. but another part of me wants him to fail jus because of the Joe(s) RIDICULOUS IDOLATRY of him !!
I also agree with most of the posters here… give this OL a chance … I, too, think if they focus on the run game, this year at least, they will be fine… and I, for one, trust Dirk Koetter to do just that !

  37. Ed Says:

The crazy part was retaining warhop. Him and lovie must be frat brothers or something because in addition to bad coaching his hand picked players were also bad.

  38. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Harrison has taken too many hits to the head…

  39. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Harrison seems unaware that the Bucs have three new starters on the line. This alone shows his ignorance on the Bucs.

  40. Tampa Tony Says:

So if the 3rd pre season game the Bucs looked great would all the apologist on this site still say the results didn’t matter?

  41. Buc since '74 Says:

Harrison is quite the expert on all things Bucs I see. His massive research efforts seemed to have stopped at the end of the first round of the draft. Nice job Harrison – way to put in the effort and be prepared for your JOB!

  42. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

It was Koetters choice to keep Warflop so that’s why we still have him.

1987 I hear what you’re saying and though I get tired of their rhetoric I guess I have to see they get tired of those with rose colored glasses on who seem to not living in reality when it comes to our Bucs.
