Captains Named

September 9th, 2015
Clinton McDonald was named one of five Buccaneers captains.

Clinton McDonald was named one of five Buccaneers captains.

The votes are in — with a little bit of a twist.

Prior to this vote, Joe always was under the impression that players voted for team captains. But that wasn’t the case in 2015. Lovie Smith said this afternoon that players and coaches all got one vote.

The winners, Lovie announced, are Clinton McDonald, Lavonte David and Gerald McCoy for the defense, plus Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson on offense, followed by Russell Shepard captaining special teams.

No surprises, though again, Joe was surprised coaches had a say. In past years, under previous coaches, that wasn’t the case.

Joe believes coaches’ involvement is likely a reason why Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, didn’t win the election.

    Everyone, keep your eye out for the Joes!!!!!! They should be doing about 90mph and headed for the Skyway!!!!

    Lovie announced that Jameis was not a team captain, and called McCoy the “face of the Franchise!!!!”

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    I’m not unhappy with those choices. Obviously a LOT of deference was paid to seniority.

    I’m really glad that Clinton McDonald got picked. As far as “captain” goes he seems to play with more “heart” than GMC. Obviously GMC has more talent but I’m a bigger fan of McDonalds.

  3. Dave Says:

    Year after Year I see the dorks on this site think the Bucs I mean Yucs will actually do something, I guess you people are delusional.. The Bucs suck have for 10 years now, will for another 10… Why?? First of all bad decision after bad decision, Jameis Winston will go down as the biggest bust in NFL History when it is all over, yes even ahead of Jamarcus Russel… The Bucs play in front of 40,000 at best per Sunday. Why? Because no one cares about the Bucs, everyone is this area has aliance to other teams… Our offensive line could not hold up against many college teams and it shows, 2 wins last year, 3 the year before, LMAO… Unstable environment and dysfunctional, 4 coaches in the last 7 years and 3 GMS… This team is no fun to watch they cant score, cant stop the run or pass and have below average players at every position but WR AND LB…. Yet you lonely people hang on to every Joe Bucs fam article and comment several times .. Kind of sad really, go make some friends, get a girl and go off the net…

  4. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Ah Bucrealist…LMAO or should I say cousin Jimmy the family contrarian.

    So you’re after Joe. We surely get different impressions from watching and reading the same thing.

    All I remember is that Joe desperatey wanted a franchise QB. He clearly preferred JW but said he could accept MM. He dismissed the off field stuff more quickly than I found appropriate but that’s ok. He has had some fun and chided us all with the “America’s QB”…I think that falls under satire…you may not find it funny.
    He as much as anyone has warned about the ups and downs of a rookie QB and looks at six as the win figure. Pat Yasinkas posted his game by game yesterday and has the Bucs at 8-8. So it’s not like Joe has overpromised.

    But again…keep bringing it…without our contrarians life would be boring.

  5. Cover deuce Says:

    Joe believes coaches’ involvement is likely a reason why Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, didn’t win the election.

    Or maybe he just didn’t get enough votes, crazy as it may sound for a rookie who hasn’t yet played a real down in this league.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

    @stpetebucsfan

    I prefer the label of “truther” than “contrarian” !!!!!!!

    And you never answered about the Pirate Ship sinking when the Bucs lose at home!!!

  7. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Dave

    Your optmism and overwhelming positive attitude are so refreshing.
    This team sucked…for decades..when Dungy arrived. Change has to start somewhere. The journey of a 1000 miles and all that.

    But

    The Bucs play in front of 40,000 at best per Sunday.

    Let me be sure I understand you. You are predicting 25,000 no shows? I’m not in Tampa now and I hear the forecast may be threatening.
    The corporate tools may stay at home in comfort…but you really believe that 25,000 paid tickets are not going to show up.

    If you google bucs schedule and follow the ESPN link you’ll see that according to them there are 1,698 tickets remaining starting at $61. Sounds like a sellout according to them.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

    Sounds about right. And yet – by the end of this year – there will be no question as to which player is “leading” this team towards greatness.

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

    I would say the Bucs have a core base of fans that are diehards numbering in the tens of thousands. Obviously winning teams bring out more game attending fans. The opinion that the majority of fans favor other teams over the Bucs is absurd. You sound like the epitome of a fair weather fan. Bucs fans are long suffering fans, but none the less great fans who love all things Bucs. Natives are bucs fans to their core.

  10. RCH Says:

    There’s no way anybody that plays oline for this team deserves to be a captain

  11. Nick Says:

    @Dave

    Stay tuned for tomorrow when they announce the sell-out. Doubt many will be traveling Titans fans.

  12. Nick Says:

    BTW ^ this is not a guess.

  13. Pickgrin Says:

    Sundays game is a “sellout”. Bring it Bucs fans. Lets get that home field advantage thingy going again. Just remember – “the wave” is only performed when your team is playing DEFENSE – LOL SMH.

    Dave, are you familiar with the term “irony”?

  15. lovinthecrablegs Says:

    hey dave, two words-YOU SUCK. NOW GET OFF THIS SIGHT, and quit berating my beloved bucs. I would like to meet you at any bar, pub in riverview and beat the panther piss right out of your lame Cajun coonass, and shoot your pet falcon bitch!!!!!!

  16. DefenseRules Says:

    @Dave … “The Bucs suck have for 10 years now, will for another 10”.

    Why bother writing and why bother following the Bucs with that attitude? Think about it … you’d be sooo much better off rooting for a team like the New England Patriots. I say ‘Go for it.’

  17. Jacko101 Says:

    It’s def not a sell out lol…. But it will
    Be a great game in front of a great crowd

  18. OAR Says:

    June 30th, 2015 …
    “Joe hopes Bucs players are smart enough to make Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, one of those players. Anything else is silliness.”
    “In the Buccaneers.com video below, official team scribe Scott Smith says he doesn’t believe Jameis will be voted captain. Man, Joe hopes Smith is wrong.”

    I guess silliness and being wrong go hand-in-hand.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

    happy for shep, he deserves it..GO BUCS!!!

  20. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    I think Joe’s last line is true. The coaches were added to the vote to make sure Winston didn’t win. That tells me the coaches knew he would get the votes. This shows that he has the respect of most of the players before he even takes a real snap.

  21. vegabuc Says:

    The best thing that happened to Jameis was not being a captain this year. This gives him a chance to earn it on the field and not by giving pep talks to his teammates. Let the man earn his stripes. Brooks, Sapp, and Lynch all had to wait and earn it. I have no beef with the captains selected this year. They all have paid their dues in the NFL.

  22. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Oh yea, Dave, you sure wrote a lot for someone who doesn’t care about the Bucs. Go root for your winner of the week, front runner.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Dave is really cool.

    That is all.

  24. Tom Edrington Says:

    Hey gang, Freedom of the Press also carries over to the comment guys, so let’s keep America free, Dave has rights too!!

    Yes, lots of questions with this team, hopefully there are some answers on Sunday.

  25. Billy Perez Says:

    @Dave……..
    Dude you are so right with your post, that I will get a life.
    Starting by getting new friends like your neighborhood friends, the girl obviously your girlfriend since she likes me for being positive and finally we’ll be at the Hard Rock celebrating the Bucs victory.

  26. DB55 Says:

    My question is how come mike Evans isn’t a captain? He had basically pro bowl stats last year, he plays angry and is obviously one of our best players. This to me sounds like the coaches picked or excluded players from being captains. Didn’t schiano get ridiculed for doing the same thing or is my memory whacked?

  27. Ray Rice Says:

    @RCH

    Agree. NO ONE ON THAT OL!!!!

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Joe, when Josh Freeman was not made captain, you held it against him. So why wasn’t Winston made one??

  29. Buc1987 Says:

    Bonzai…Josh had already been a captain prior to the 2013 season that’s why it was a big deal when he got it stripped from him.

  30. El lokobuccaneer Says:

    All the talk is over let’s put them in the ground instead they wanna walk the plank well lets make them walk the plank a bloody bloody mess is what I’m hoping for hit them in the ducking mouth really f@$$ing hard no surrender no retreat only defeat for those who oppose the muthatrucking bucs

    Seriously, do you really think cutting and pasting the same monster sized comment, in several threads, makes you some sort of ‘expert’? Your ‘right’ to comment here is only limited by what the Joes will put up with, but I retain the ‘right’ to ignore your drivel. Go support the Bellacheats, you aren’t gaining anything here.

  32. Delson Says:

    Lmao

  33. The Buc Realist Says:

    Maybe if They had a “real” QB competition and Jameis won, Then they could have voted him Captain. As he would have earned it!!!!

    The pessimist complains about the wind… The optimist expects it to change.. The “Realist” adjusts the sails!!!!!

  34. NYbucfan Says:

    @Dave-
    You’re an idiot.
    Why try to argue w you?!?!
    You probably said the same thing about the Team when Dungy took over!
    Are we going to win the SB or make the playoffs this year?? No.
    Are we going to be better and on a 2-3 year path to be relevant? YES!!!

  35. Lakeland Buc Says:

    LET’S GO BUCS, The 2015 NFC South Divisional Champs!

  36. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    DB55

    Before we can annoint ME he has to stay healthy. I’m not concerned about a Michael Clayon like sophomore implosion. I AM concerned about nagging hamstrings severly limiting his play this year. I hope they’re just being super..super cautious.

  37. NashvilleBuc Says:

    @Dave

    See SuperBowl XXXVII winner.

  38. tmaxcon Says:

    maybe everyone should compromise and make GMC face of the franchise for the first of half of games and Americas Quarterback the Face of the Franchise for the second half and 3rd downs since GMC is nowhere to be found during those times. GMC is a good player but needs to pick it up when it matters. no more excuses 4 qtrs of ball…

    Mankins being a captain is a joke… It should be based on what you did for me lately not 5 years ago.

    Aren’t Captains based on leadership, not being the best player?

  40. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

    Adam Schein on NFL.com just said (again) that Marriota is better than Jaboo, will have a better season than Jaboo, and will have a better career than Jaboo. Screw you Adam. C’mon Lovie and the Gang, please kick the Titans assess this weekend.

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    Love and Warrick Dunn

    You are correct sir that being said mankins has not proven anything as a buccaneer. I much rather see a real buccaneer as captain not a has been with bad knees collecting a 7 million retirement check. Just my preference. I’m sure mankins is not a bad guy but he is finished regardless of six pack

    Since your here year after year, your clearly one of the lonely people you speak of. What’s really kind of sad is you don’t even know it. You might be the biggest loser I have seen posting on here!

  43. Dave Says:

    lol at all you losers on my balls

  44. BoomBoomBoom Says:

  45. Dreambig Says:

    Dave,

  47. Trubucfan22 Says:

    Hey joe in The caption you say mcdonald is one of 5 captains, bit you have 6 names listed. Just wondering which is correct.

  48. chipbuc Says:

    Dave, your trolling makes you a first class a hole. Cant see how you deserve to be a Bucs fan, with your transparent bating of real Bucs fans. What a tool!!!!!!

  49. Pick6 Says:

    well, if jameis had josh freeman’s agent, accusations of a rigged vote would already be flying

  50. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    No rookie deserves to be a captain. No matter who they are. You earn that with time.

  51. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    When an election doesn’t go the way someone wants you always hear, “it was rigged!”. Joe is becoming a conspiracy theorist with Lovie playing the role of Obama.
