Joe’s hopes have been dashed. The Bucs will not make their first appearance in the Hall of Fame game since the Tony Dungy era.
The annual kickoff to the NFL preseason will be played in Canton by the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills. A Tampa Tribune report weeks ago said the Bucs were a possibility for the game in 2014.
If nothing else, this means the Bucs will have a traditional preseason and training camp, one that will afford fans loads of opportunities to see the team practice in person.
My, my, my, how interesting it was yesterday to hear one of Greg Schiano’s mentors, Dave Wannstedt, express how much he doesn’t like it when 4-3 defenses get cute and blitz-happy, rushing the passer with stunts and “tricking” and not letting their pass rushers attack the quarterback and make plays.
Last season’s Bucs special teams coach took to the SiriusXM NFL Radio airwaves yesterday to share his philosophy. [read more]
The chatter of a potential Darrelle Revis trade has hit the studios of BSPN. Somehow finding time not to talk the non-basketball association, Andrew Brandt, Ashley Fox and Louis Riddick discuss the possibility of the Bucs shipping out Revis.
In a new Pewter Panel show that Joe surely will never be invited to participate in, the Buccaneers have convened an esteemed roundtable of local analysts to talk about all things Tampa Bay at Buccaneers.com.
Tampa Tribune scribes eye-RAH! Kaufman and Roy Cummings joined Buccaneers Radio Network voice T.J. Rives and team reporter Scott Smith to dive into free agency speculation in a recent edition. [read more]
Joe realizes many Bucs fans are in denial. They can’t imagine that half their current beloved Buccaneers won’t be around these parts when opening day arrives.
These fans are certain Lovie Smith just needs to coach up underperforming Bucs and life will be good. [read more]
Boy, this teams-calling-the-Bucs-for-Darrelle-Revis saga has sure touched off a sore point of sorts with Bucs fans. It’s taken over the starting-quarterback squabble. In fact, it has even pushed combine news off the front burner.
Bucs fans seem split. Half want Revis shipped off; the other think think that would be the work of the devil. [read more]
It’s Joe’s weekly session with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620. Joe touches on his experiences at the NFL Scouting Combine, chats with Jason Licht and Lovie Smith, and more.

As the Bucs brass holds its collective breath to see how large Ndamukong Suh’s new contract will be, a renowned defensive coach took to SiriusXM NFL Radio this evening and shared impressive words about Gerald McCoy — without being asked. [read more]
Joe raised an eyebrow yesterday when CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora claimed multiple NFL teams were calling the Bucs looking to pry away all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis. To be clear, La Canfora explained the Bucs were not shopping Revis, only listening to sales pitches.
All the while at the NFL Scouting Combine last week when people, not just Joe, spoke to Bucs general manager Jason Licht and head coach Lovie Smith, both were heard listing Revis among the major pieces of a future winning puzzle already in their possession. [read more]
During his WDAE-AM 620 morning show, Tampa Bay Times Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud has spent a chunk of time this week letting listeners know how he peered deeply into the eyes and expressions of Jason Licht and Lovie Smith during extended chats about all things Bucs at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Joe shares his thoughts on the 2014 NFL Combine and his days in Indianapolis.
This was Joe’s second year going to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Man, Joe is just simply exhausted after five straight days there. He just got back his wind Tuesday night.
With the possible exception of Bucs training camp, it is the most work Joe does each year in such a short span of time. But it’s fun work because you are gathering so much information. [read more]
There was a lot of chatter at the NFL Scouting Combine last week about how running backs have been devalued in this age of throw-first, ask-questions-later NFL. Fullbacks? They are nearly obsolete.
Almost, that is. The Bucs currently have Erik Lorig as their fullback, but for how much longer? He’s a free agent and reading the words of Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com, the Bucs would be in for a fight to retain Lorig’s services. [read more]
Between chasing down NFL contacts for interviews and college prospects for information, Joe was able to snap smartphone photos of the goings-on at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis last week, hosted by the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Are NFL teams trying to trade for Bucs CB Darrelle Revis?
The Bucs have had — to be polite — a shaky secondary since Ronde Barber last played cornerback. No matter how much rear-view mirror/revisionist history Bucs fans want to peddle, gun-totin,’ helmet-swinging, cabbie-slugging Aqib Talib was nothing more than an average corner with the Bucs. When he wasn’t hurt, even though some Bucs fans tried to make him out to be the second-coming of Night Train Lane, he wasn’t worth all his hassle and baggage and drama and nonsense. [read more]
49ers GM Trent Baalke explains, indirectly, why Doug Martin is Lovie Smith’s bellcow.
A cool thing about attending the NFL Scouting Combine is Joe got to listen to other top-notch general managers and kind of get a feel for their mindset and what makes their teams great. Joe could sit and listen to guys like Ted Thompson, the mastermind of the Packers, talk all day.
Now when Joe got a chance to have limited time with Bucs coach Lovie Smith, Joe was mildly surprised when Lovie said he wanted a bellcow running back and make no mistake about it, Doug Martin is that bellcow back. [read more]
Holy Flurckingschmidt! The NFL is starting to upload videos to YouTube. Welcome to the 21st Century NFL warden commissioner Roger Goodell! Joe referenced this clip last week but this is the Total Access segment on NFL Network where Bucs Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp and current Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy discuss, among other things, new Bucs coach Lovie Smith.
Donald Penn is an average-to-above-average starting NFL left tackle, who is earning average starter’s money at his position. But a new report from Yahoo! Sports claims Tampa Bay is in pursuit of more bang for its bucks. [read more]
Bucs general manager Jason Licht shares a moment from the NFL Scouting Combine with Will Brinson. In this CBS Sports video, Licht talks about Darrelle Revis, what he would like to do with the No. 7 pick and, of course, every Bucs fan’s favorite subject, incumbent starting quarterback Mike Glennon.
NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport is often gifted the inside track on many breaking stories, and yesterday he pounced on buzz out of the unimpressive free-agent market for quarterbacks.
Rapoport Twittered the Bucs, Bears and Jets are hot in the pants for 35-year-old journeyman Josh McCown. [read more]
