Lovie Stands Alone In Florida

July 14th, 2014
"This is not Girl Scout camp, Dolphins camp, or Jaguars camp, gentlemen."

“This is not Girl Scout camp, Dolphins camp, or Jaguars camp, gentlemen.”

To prepare for the sweltering grind of training camp, Joe mowed his lawn Saturday in late afternoon under sunny skies. (Please remind Joe to never be so foolish again.)

The effort was not worth the satisfying post-mow Beck’s Dark guzzling. But it did get Joe thinking about Lovie Smith’s choice of training camp practice times and how it compares to those of his Florida coaching brethren. [read more]

“It Is Josh McCown’s Job To Lose”

Former Bucs rock star GM Mark Dominik likes current makeup of the team.

Former Bucs rock star GM Mark Dominik opens up and likes the current makeup of the team.

Since being relieved of his duties by the team he had worked for since 1995, former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has, for the most part, shied away from talking about Tampa Bay.

Joe understands. You don’t hear former Colts general manager Bill Polian talk about the Colts very often, if at all.

Even after being hired by BSPN and SiriusXM NFL Radio, Dominik largely has avoided Bucs topics. But last week, Dominik, co-hosting with Howard David during a broadcast of “The Blitz,” opened up. [read more]

Waston Evaluation In The Spotlight

July 14th, 2014

Tampa Bay had a healthy, young Dekoda Watson eager to be re-signed to the Lovie Smith regime this offseason. Watson had established himself in the NFL as an extremely strong special teams player, an elite athlete who also was a solid backup linebacker with pass rush skills off the edge.

Given that Lovie Smith openly craves speed and athleticism in his linebackers, it seemed a no-brainer that Watson would return at the modest salary he deserved. [read more]

Clarifying Brees-McCown Chatter

Bucs LB Jonathan Casillas explains his comparison of Josh McCown and Drew Brees.

Last month, Bucs linebacker Jonathan Casillas, proud native of New Jersey, appeared on New York sports radio station WEPN-FM to talk — guess what? — Bucs football! Joe got word of this interview and it turned the NFL on its ears because Casillas compared former starting quarterback Josh McCown to future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees.

Wait! What? Drew Brees? McCown, 35, has basically only a handful of good games in his career. [read more]

RT Demar Dotson and the Bucs offensive line will get a quick test.

Yes, we are now 11 days from training camp. Speculation about how the Bucs will look or play will slowly be chipped away, little by little, once pads are put on and chin straps are buckled.

On paper, the Tampa Bay offensive line is certainly the most vulnerable position group. By now, if you are not aware of weak spots/questions marks/holes on the offensive line, that tells Joe you haven’t read this site in a few months.

Joe has often documented the issues. [read more]

Davin Joseph Talks To Joe

July 14th, 2014

Former Bucs guard Davin Joseph talked to Joe about the nightmare of last season and what may have gone wrong.

Over the weekend, Joe had a chance to talk to former Bucs right guard Davin Joseph. His foundation, Davin’s Dream Team, and corporate partners were offering free physicals to needy Tampa youngsters so they could participate in school sports this year. Joseph, despite playing for the Rams, does a lot of work for the Tampa Bay community and plans to continue his local charitable works.

Joseph, who still wears that perpetual ear-to-ear grin, spoke to Joe about what went wrong last year for both him and the Bucs, the demise of franchise quarterback Josh Freeman and the eventual ousting of Bucs commander Greg Schiano. [read more]

The Countdown: Worst 20 Buccaneers Of The Past 10 Years — No. 17

July 13th, 2014

All the Top-Whatever lists across the Internet got Joe thinking of the Buccaneers’ drought since their Super Bowl glory. And that motivated Joe to rank the 20 worst Buccaneers of the past 10 years.

Immense thought went into this at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters. There was even an all-night screaming session where a top intern was standing on a table yelling, “If Derrick Ward isn’t on this list, then I quit.” Joe had to get the poor kid a beer before Joe fired him for spilling it. Tie Won’t Go To Clayborn

July 13th, 2014

ClaybornBowersAs a former first-round draft pick entering his contract year because the Bucs didn’t exercise their fifth-year option on him, Adrian Clayborn will be an interesting call for Lovie Smith this season.

If Clayborn, say, has seven sacks as a starting left defensive end in 2014, then the Bucs will be forced to pay him a king’s ransom to retain his services. [read more]

Rookie Returners?

Buccaneers.com editor Scott Smith believes rookie WR Robert Herron could be a starting return man this fall.

Joe understands why Bucs fans are giddy over wide receiver Mike Evans, tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and running back Charles Sims.

Not only are they rookie offensive specialists added to upgrade the worst offense in the NFL, but they were all first- and second-day draft picks. Those guys should breathe life into a football team. [read more]

Did The Bucs Have A One-Legged Guard?

Bucs DE Michael Johnson is a nice player, but he’s not Simeon Rice.

Joe has typed repeatedly, and as recently as yesterday, he has no issue with the Bucs defense as it is now, just 13 days from the start of 2014 training camp. Joe rests at night comfortably believing the defense, with Lovie Smith at the helm, is in good hands.

One reason Joe isn’t losing sleep is because of the new talent, for example, defensive end Michael Johnson. [read more]

A fresh look at Clayborn’s summer work

Yes, it is two weeks to Bucs training camp. Two weeks. Fourteen days. It really means just two more weekends of non-football and having to rely on your DVR’ed games and Game Rewind for your football fix.

After next weekend, you will be able to watch players run routes, catch passes and crack pads, albeit in practice. It’s better than watching the 38th rerun of the recording of the Chris Simms-led Bucs. [read more]

The Key To Winning

Joe believes it is offense, not defense, that will be the key to a potentially historic 2014 season

Joe believes it is safe to type that Bucs coach Lovie Smith knows how to win. No, Lovie has never won a Super Bowl — the ultimate goal — but he has won in the NFL.

Right now, Bucs fans are so beaten down from years of losing, from Raheem Morris chest-bumping players despite being down by three scores, to the MRSA and losing the first eight games out of the chute last year. [read more]

Don’t Sleep On David Gettis

Bucs WR David Gettis could be a sleeper candidate to become one of the "Dunkaneers."

Scott Smith claims David Gettis could be a sleeper candidate to become one of the “Dunkaneers.”

A lot has been made of the “Dunkaneers,” the tall guys on offense who are expected to go up and snatch the ball. Receivers Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans along with tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins could be a front line for a top-notch college basketball team the way they can sky and fight.

But from the keyword of Buccaneers.com multimedia maven Scott Smith, a guy the Bucs signed late last month shouldn’t fly under the radar. [read more]
