Report: Bucs Are Dangling Shaq Mason

March 13th, 2023

Starting right guard Shaq Mason.

[UPDATE: 1:14 p.m.] It seems the Bucs have a starter they are testing the trade waters with to see if any fish bite.

Joe guesses you could say we’ve seen the last of starting right guard Shaq Mason. Per Jeremy Fowler of BSPN, the Bucs are shopping him for a trade.

And what happens if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht can’t get any fish to bite? Well, Joe won’t be shocked if Mason is released as a cap casualty.

This offensive line is going to look a whole lot different than last year. Joe’s pretty convinced of that.

The Bucs traded a fifth-round pick to New England to acquire Mason before the start of the 2021 season.

As Joe wrote as the Combine broke, look for Robert Hainsey to fill the void left by Mason’s departure.

[UPDATE: 1:14 p.m.] Tom Pelissero of NFL Network said if the Bucs cannot find a trade partner for Mason, they will release him.

  1. Todd Says:

Awesome let’s trade one of our better lineman and have a worse line ugh lol

  2. Tim Says:

One of our better linemen out the door. You gotta think that’ll be taken into account for any possible FA QB looking to possibly sign with Tampa.

  3. SB~LV Says:

    lol… yeah that’ll entice FA QB’s
    Not that I want one
Trask Time and swallow all the hard cap dollars
    See ya in 2024

  4. Marine Buc Says:

Most Bucs fans don’t know that Shaq Mason was actually worse at pass protection than Donovan Smith…

He allowed @ 27 QB pressures in 2022.

No wonder why we got him for a 5th round pick. Old Billy B. ain’t stupid…

If we can get a 5th or 6th round pick and reduce our cap another $5M we should do it.

  5. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Leverett at LG and Hainsey at RG good by me. And maybe Goedeke beefs up

  6. eric Says:

news flash the line was not that good last year. Andre Dillard, Hainsy, Big Red, Gordecke/Leverettte and Wirf.

  7. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I agree with Marine. Shaq didn’t show me much last year in the pass or run game. I thought he was over priced.

  8. Beej Says:

    What Nicholas said

  9. Steven007 Says:

Mason was a C player last year. 9 million for a C player doesn’t square.

  10. Colin In Canada Says:

Mason was not good enough last year. He’s a gap scheme only guard. We are going to a zone scheme base now so he’s out

  11. ocala Says:

These are necessary steps for the Bucs. Bucs went all in and it worked. No fan likes it (me included), but the Bucs have got to reset the roster and draft well. They will be in good shape with the cap next year and phenomenal shape in 2025.

  12. firethecannons Says:

please NO! to Baker we will be 3rd in nfc south at most just roll with Trask hope for a miracle teach these new guys up better and draft well and get ready for 2024 draft and take Hooker in meantime if he is in 2nd round 2024 is when we are a contender

  13. KC Buc Says:

I don’t hate it. He’s a little better than probably replacement level but for how much longer? Not worth the cap hit that could cost us say, LVD? I trust Licht with OL evaluations. Goedeke should take a big jump next year along with solid competition with Hainsey & Leverett. Maybe bring back Stinnie & another cheap vet for competition, draft 1 or 2 players, and let’s throw them in the deep end and see what works in a down year anyways. If I have to choose LVD or Mason for 2 years, I’m taking the value of LVD’s leadership & play every time.

  14. Ryan Smith Says:

Maybe well draft O’Cyrus Torrence out if Florida.

  15. BrianBucs Says:

Bucs will be running the Wide Zone offense under Canales.
If you understand how it runs you can see that Mason may not be a good fit for it.
Bucs, get what you can for him

  16. Bogiedr Says:

So let’s get rid of the o line, only 2 starters left, throw out there Trask, who torched the sec, watch him run for his life and then say he is no good! The guy thasy completely outplayed Mac Jones … hmmmm.

  17. Pryda sec 147 Says:

See ya later dude thanks for nothing

  18. Bogiedr Says:

So let’s get rid of the o line, only 2 starters left, throw out there Trask, who torched the sec, watch him run for his life and then say he is no good! The guy that completely outplayed Mac Jones … hmmmm.

  19. Killian Says:

Why is Ian Rappaport tweeting Evans might get traded?!

  20. NEfan Says:

Mason didn’t let up one sack last season. Marine@ put up Wirfs pass protection #’s. Would you trade him? Why would any unless desperate like Mayfield, Wentz or Dalton come to this shat show?

  21. jugheadfla Says:

Is Aaron Stinne going to be healthy for this year? I haven’t heard anything about him in a long while.

  22. Redeemer Says:

Nobody is giving the bucs anything more than a 5th for Mason. It’s not his play, it’s his salary and cap hit. He probably isn’t willing to budge on his money. That why he’s being shopped. He’s played well for us, but not 9 million dollars well. Unless he agrees to a restructure, I bet he gets cut, depending on the cap implications. No way any GM is paying him full salary

  23. robert Says:

    EVANS SHOULD BE TRADED!!!

The keepers on the O are the wirfs, white, trask, last years OL picks and DE’s and godwin.

the rest should be traded or released. they will only be a memory of better times collecting a check for their last few years in the nfl.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

An idiot would advocate trading Evans. Or a moron. Or a cretin.

  25. NEfan Says:

You can’t keep dropping veterans off your team especially oline. Dropping Mason is a mistake, who will replace him? Everett, Godeke? Restructure his deal, decent olinemen are a premium. FYI Mason t
Played 1200 snaps, Wirf 938. Mason gave up one snap 2 penalties Wirfs gave up 2 and 4 penalties.

  26. NEfan Says:

Goatfarmer@ it was clear Evan’s lost a step last season, he is not great at separation, no doubt a Buc icon but a less inferior QB is not going to increase his value. Sell while you still can.

  27. Marine Buc Says:

    @ NEFan

    I disagree.

If they can’t trade him – the Bucs will cut him.

Watch the game film… It will clearly show you he is not worth $9.5M.

    No way.

  28. NEfan Says:

Gave up 1 sack not snap

  29. NEfan Says:

Marine, that’s why I said restructure.

  30. Marine Buc Says:

    @ NEfan

Truth is – Smith, Goedeke and Mason all under-performed in 2022.

    Goedeke was a rookie.

    Smith is now gone.

    Mason is next…

  31. Marine Buc Says:

    @ NEfan

    Restructure?

Maybe – if he is willing to accept backup OG money.

    Like a 75% reduction.

  32. Rob Says:

Luke Goedeke at RG. He played RT in college and could move inside. Hainsey should battle at LG with Leverett and Draft two LT.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

As it looks to me right now …

    o LT: Wirfs
    o LG: Leverett
    o C: Jensen
    o RG: Hainsey
    o RT: Goedeke
o Backups: Molchon, Walton, Rookie, Rookie

Run Kyle run. Faster Kyle faster.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Along the same vein … Top-3 Rnds of draft:

    1 – CB
    2 – ILB or DT/DE/OLB
    3 – DT/DE/OLB or ILB

    Remainder: 1 TE, 1 Safety, 1 K, 2 RB, 1 DT/DE/OLB

  35. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

    Looks about right to me…

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

Evans lost a step? Go tell that to the Panthers.

  37. Marine Buc Says:

Goedeke starting at RT is a little scary.

The Bucs will be drafting an OT – probably in the first 3 rounds…

  38. CChead Says:

Trade him to Panthers for Matt Corral and let him compete with Trask.

  39. Joe in Michigan Says:

If the Bucs are gonna run the ball…

    Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State
    Height: 6-8. Weight: 374. Arm: 36.38. Hand: 11.63.
    Official 40 Time: 5.35.
    Projected Round (2023): 2-3.

Mason didn’t let up one sack last season.

We watched the games. The reason there were no sacks is Brady not because Mason was any good. He was average as a pass blocker and was below average as a run blocker. We had heard that he was a superior run blocker. That was bull spit.

  41. geno711 Says:

I am ok with moving Wirfs to Left tackle and giving Goedeke a try at right tackle but I think Bucs fans are too quick to think Goedeke will be good at right tackle.

It was only one game that he played there. Lets’s see what he looks like after a half of season there. Lots of guys look good for a game or two, it is that third game that those guys can really get exposed.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

That’s just stupid. He’s not expensive and he’s a solid offensive lineman.

But I guess if you’re just going to Tank with Trask, it doesn’t matter. But man are they going to have a lot of holes to fill.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

*He’s not THAT expensive I mean, not for a very solid offensive lineman. Also cutting him only frees up $4.5m. A very bad move. Even if you are Tanking with Trask, you want to at least make sure he has a decent line.

If you do dump him, then basically, at that point, you’re all in on tanking. Again, I have no issues with that, so long as they don’t then waste money doing stupid moves like signing Mayfield. Go all in on tanking, or don’t, just don’t do some halfway garbage.

Also, if you’re getting rid of him, you should trade Jensen as well.

  44. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Every day no matter what

  45. Brandon Says:

    LT Wirfs
    LG Stinnie/Leverett
    C Jenson
    RG Hainey
    RT Goedeke

Competition brought in from the draft and maybe a cheap vet or two. It’s not a terrible line by any means and very young.

  46. Brandon Says:

    NEfan…

Evans lost a step? Are you kidding me? I suppose you fail to see how your boy REFUSED to push the ball down the field almost all season. His dink and dunk antics are gone and the receivers will be better for it.

  47. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Seriously doubt we trade Mason. Other teams will simply wait till we cut him.

  48. Goatfarmer Says:

Too bad Dumbanik isn’t some other team’s GM. He’d trade a first rounder for Mason even if he was injured and in rehab.

  49. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jason Licht excels at Offensive Line rebuilding. I’m not worried about it.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Trade Mason for Cappa

  51. Buccos Says:

What about Walton as a starting OT? He looked pretty decent out there last year when Smith went down.
