The Bucs And Jacoby Brissett

March 13th, 2023

Todd Bowles knows Jacoby Brissett very well.

The Buccaneers’ reported interest in having Jacoby Brissett (and/or Baker Mayfield) compete with Kyle Trask for the starting quarterback job is ironic and intriguing on a few levels.

First, Joe will note that Brissett sat behind Tom Brady in New England after being drafted by the Patriots in Round 3 of the 2016 NFL Draft. Trask sat behind Brady for two seasons after starting for the Florida Gators, the team for which Brissett was a two-year backup in 2011 and 2012.

Brissett also had a good day against Todd Bowles’ Bucs defense in 2019 while playing for the Colts. He started and threw for 251 yards and 2 touchdowns and 0 picks, plus 4 rushes for 26 yards. The Bucs won the game 38-35. The Bowles and the Bucs saw Brissett against last season in Cleveland on Thanksgiving weekend.

It was the “coaching malpractice” game, when Bowles took the ball out of Tom Brady’s hands late in the fourth quarter to set up overtime. The Bucs not only lost to the Browns in overtime, they lost All-Pro right tackle Tristan Wirfs and Pro Bowl safety Antoine Winfield to injuries in the overtime.

Brissett didn’t have the greatest game that day, but he did come up huge in overtime with a 46-yard completion to Amari Cooper that set up the winning field goal.

So it’s safe to say Bowles has watched plenty of game film on Brissett over the years.

Joe is not a big fan of Brissett, who got a shot in 2019 with a solid Colts roster and finished 7-8 as a starter. His career record as a starter is 18-30.

If the team is leaning towards a tank job, or really wants Trask to win the starting job, then Brissett is a better choice than 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick Baker Mayfield, who is 31-38 in his career.

    Both are sh!tty

    Brissett = mediocre at best!
Been on 4 teams and moved on from for a reason…

  3. Redeemer Says:

Depending on the money, I’m not against signing Jacoby. He’d instantly be their best option. That’s sad but true

  4. Bucs56 Says:

Please no brisset. No upside with him. He is a back up. Mayfield at least has upside and hope. And as Andy tells Reg in shawshank….hope is a good thing.

  5. Goatfarmer Says:

Brissett also QB’d the Dolphins in 2021 and was impressive while playing injured.

Would rather Baker but Jacoby >>> Trashk.

  6. SB~LV Says:

    lol 😂

  7. Da Bucs Guy Says:

No O-line. Bucs will tank no matter what third rate QB they over pay for.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Jacoby Brissett……..Bucs Quarterback Du Jour

  9. Tee Says:

We won’t get either I don’t think. Mike White just got 2 years for 16 mil from Miami. He has less than 10 starts. Mayfield and Jacoby are way better than him. How much will the Bucs be willing to spend with all the holes on the team right now?

  10. LOL Says:

Ill take a good brisket over Brissett.

    LOL

  11. sasquatch Says:

    They’re not tanking.

  12. Usedtocould Says:

    Baker, Baker, tud maker

  13. Marine Buc Says:

    1 – J. Brissett
    2 – B. Mayfield
    3 – T. Heinicke
    4 – G. Minshew
    5 – C. Rush
    6 – A. Dalton
    7 – C. Wentz
    8 – M. Mariotta
    9 – J. Winston
    10 – D. Lock
    11 – B. Gabbert

Plenty to chose from. This is my short list of realistic candidates.

  14. Marine Buc Says:

Jimmy G just signed with the Raiders…

Thank goodness we can take him off our list now.

Raiders lost the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

Maybe we should sign Heinekens, just somhe doesn’t embarrass Bloweszo anymore. The Toadster has no answer for Heinekens.

  16. firethecannons Says:

why bother with any of these career losers? roll with Trask and see hoe it plays out

  17. Redeemer Says:

Upside with baker? I guess. He’s had plenty of talent around him, yet he can’t get it done. Again, it’s all dependant on the money. I’d surely take him for a one year 8-10 million dollar deal.

  18. Redeemer Says:

Jesus Marine, that list almost made me sick to my stomach.

  19. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Redeemer

I think the ceiling for Baker Mayfield is what we saw from him in 2019 when he led the Browns to the AFC Championship and they came very close to beating the Chiefs.

Not to mention – the Cleveland defense beat the heck out of P. Mahomes that game. A concussion and a sprained foot…

That season the Brown’s had a great running game a great defense and Baker did enough to win a lot of games that year.

A big problem with Baker since that season is the amount of injuries he has had. He finally seems to be healthy and he is affordable.

If they sign Baker I am fine with it. I really still want to see Kyle Trask rise up and beat out whoever the Bucs bring in.

  20. Rand Says:

How does Mayfield have an upside? This is a joke. All of a sudden he’s gonna be brilliant with a team that usually has no clue how to develop greatness. It literally has to be already inherently ingrained in the QB first to work, which it is not with Mayfield

  21. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Redeemer

“Jesus Marine, that list almost made me sick to my stomach.”

    LOL!!!

Sorry buddy. But that is the real deal.

I’m not here to BS you and paint pretty pictures…

Tom Brady is the highest paid Buc player in 2023. He is accounting for @ 15.65% of our entire salary cap…

Don’t worry – before you know it – it will be mid October and we can start talking about the draft.

    It’s a Buc’s life my friend.

  22. beanblo Says:

FACT: At Florida, Brissett was a backup to John Brantley, who was one of Florida’s biggest busts at quarterback.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Brissett, as a roster filler, on a super cheap deal is fine I guess – no difference between him and someone like Gabbert, in that I don’t want to see either play.

But if that’s the level of loser you’re bringing in, why bother? Just give the job to Trask and lets see what he’s got. The team isn’t winning anything with Brissett or Mayfield or Gabbert.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … ‘Don’t worry – before you know it – it will be mid October and we can start talking about the draft.’

We’ve barely started talking about the 2023 draft, and now you’re already looking forward to the 2024 draft?

Interesting view of Brady’s impact on our 2023 salary CAP. His $35 mil CAP hit this year barely covers the $30 mil salary the Bucs paid him to return in 2022. Aahh yes, the wonders of kicking everyone’s can down the street.

  25. BucBuckeye Says:

Marine Buc nails it – it’s not quite a “tank” season – Brisset, Mayfield or Heinicke appear to be the Cream-the-Crappe options.

These thrree probably allow us to be the most competitive while still working within the confines of the salary cap constraints – while getting the most use of the current roster.

We’re making the final payment on Superbowl LV.

We’re dealing with the bulk of that dead cap space in one year, while trying to remain competitive. Hats off to Jason Licht, but it’s still going to be a tough year.

Only a true, GRADE A imbecile, would have an issue with the Bucs trying to win while they have the greatest QB of all time, then throw a fit about a tight cap for a single season after he leaves. But, that’s the kind of expert, highly intelligent take you get from someone who thought Chris Conte and Ryan Smith were good NFL starters. LOL!

  27. Allbuccedup Says:

Brissett mediocre Mayfield shi**y on the field and off.

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

Sorry Joe, Brissett is a better QB than Mayfield. However, thats really not saying much. They both need a lot of work.

  29. Bucsmarley Says:

Roll with Trask. Draft bijon Robinson in the 1st then hooker in the second. I’ll take mariota as the backup qb

  30. Depressed 2023 Says:

It will be a miracle if we get 8 wins …. With whoever is available.
    Just the cold hard facts.

    Thank you T B 12 for all the memories 💪 🏆

  31. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Don’t draft a RB in the first round. DL, then Hooker then LB then RB.

  32. chark Says:

Mayfield much better than Brissett..gotta be kidding
