NFL Network: Baker Mayfield Isn’t The Only QB Bucs Are Sniffing

March 13th, 2023

Shopping for QBs.

[UPDATE: 12:23 p.m.] Intriguing information from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network this morning.

In a special broadcast live on the NFL’s house organ, NFL insider Mike Garafolo began talking about the Bucs’ pursuit of veteran Mayfield for the starting quarterback gig. Garafolo thinks the potential Mayfield move is a great fit for Mayfield and the team.

But hold on, it’s not a done deal. Garafolo said Mayfield is just one “of several veteran quarterbacks” the Bucs have targeted. Garafolo specifically brought up Jimmy GQ’s name but added it’s unlikely that Jimmy GQ signs with the Bucs.

Jimmy GQ likely will not come to Tampa Bay because of a lack of interest. There is interest. Here is the problem preventing Jimmy GQ from buying property on Davis Islands.

Basically, Garafolo noted, Jimmy GQ is the hot babe at the $50 poker table at Aria, but Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht only has a $20 bill in his wallet.

Garafolo did not offer any other names that Licht is eyeing other than to use the description of “veteran.”

So Joe has to wonder, what other cheap veteran quarterbacks are on Licht’s radar?

[UPDATE: 12:23 p.m.] Diana Russini of BSPN has ID’ed one of the other quarterbacks Garafolo referenced. (Hat tip: @nichcarlson.)

  1. Dooley Says:

    Jimmy G is TRASH!

  2. Tim Says:

JL’s face is saying ‘I wish I had more cap to spend.’

  3. Tim Says:

Bring in Mayfield and Cooper Rush and have the 3 of them battle it out for the gig.

  4. Dre bucs fan Says:

What kind of money is Teddy B. Looking for? I’d take him!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Who’s next Y A Tittle?

  6. Darin Says:

Are mayfield and manziel the same guy?

  7. Marine Buc Says:

    Jacoby Brissett > Jimmy GQ.

Plus he would be less expensive.

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

He’s really thinking ‘if you don’t have my coffee, get the h£ll out of here!

  9. Tampamac Says:

Sounds like Andy Dalton will be the next Bucs QB then.. Champagne wishes with beer pockets

  10. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tim

    LOL.

    That look on Licht’s face…

It’s the – Tom Brady is our highest paid player – look.

Oh well – when you dance all night you have to pay the fiddler.

  11. Tye Says:

I seen somewhere Jacoby Brissett name was mentioned…
Hasn’t he been on like 4-5 teams and hasn’t beaten anyone in a qb competition…. Waste of money for the Bucs!

  12. Beej Says:

As Tim said, I really like that kid from Dallas

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Brissett, Winston, Bridges and Heinclke are all better than Mayfield. They were giving the ratings of the top available 101 free agents on a sports program this morning. Baker was rated at no 101. That’s 101 people. Grab some wood and hold on tight. Long season ahead. Long Season

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Or maybe he has no idea what he’s talking about beyond stating the obvious

  15. DoooshLaRue Says:

Heineke, Rush or Brissette are all good with me.

  16. Bobby M. Says:

IMO…I think Heinke is another vet on their radar. He’s relatively young, has starting experience and Bucs got a good look at him a few yrs back. I think Mike White could be in the mix as well.

  17. Goatfarmer Says:

Anytime the only QB on your roster is a slow learning, slow processing, poor man’s Mike Glennon, of course you’re going to sniff as many quarterbacks as you possibly can.

  18. DBS Says:

Oh it just has to be Gabbert. He too is BA approved!

  19. Alstott up the gut Says:

Since we need the signing to be somewhat on the cheap, why not gauge the interest in Taylor Heinicke? I can never forget that 2020 playoff performance he had and would be open to bringing him in.

  20. DBS Says:

They are just not telling anyone they are giving him another contract yet.

  21. Joshua porter Says:

Jimmy g can’t stay healthy so u better have a good back up cuz he will be playing at some point in the year

  22. zzbucs Says:

Come on guys!! We do not have the money for Jimmy G, so don´t get trapped by this silly reports

  23. Arn Platz Says:

Don’t shoot the messenger……Carson Wentz per my 305 source

  24. BelleGladeBuc Says:

The Cleveland Browns chose an extremely questionable character who was suspended by the NFL because after 4 seasons they determined that Baker Mayfield is not the guy.

The Carolina Panthers chose PJ Walker and Sam Darnold over Baker Mayfield.

The Rams, who have a suddenly injury plagued quarterback in Stafford still decided that Mayfield is not worth keeping around.

    That’s who Baker Mayfield is.

Baker is a bridge to nowhere quarterback. Baker is good enough to win just enough games to guarantee that you have a draft pick between 10-20 in the next year’s draft.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

It seems obvious to me that the Bucs can’t afford any QB over about $4-$5 mil given our salary CAP situation. And IF we did pay more for a big name, he’d go down in flames because we couldn’t surround him with the offensive & defensive support that he’d need to win consistently.

Surely JL isn’t dumb enough to repeat his 2022 mistakes: overspend big-time on big names, end up with a 8-9 record, then pay for it for the next several years with even more mediocre teams.

  26. WVBuc Says:

Please, for the love of my sanity & God above, next time you’ve got an article sourced from Mike Garafolo that references Jimmy Garapolo, in any manner, refer to them as Mike Journalist and Jimmy Quarterback. I’ve got many stands of confusing thought I’m trying to iron out after reading this & it’s a short article. Please & Thank you.

  27. NEfan Says:

DR, I don’t think Licht thought that Bowles would bring the team to its knees. 2020 SB, 13-4 2021 almost SB bound, ah humm. That seems to me he did a pretty good job. His failure was letting BA talk him into stoogerville; which he is paying for dearly now.

  28. Cobraboy Says:

The most expensive QB paid on the roster is still the GOAT.

  29. MP Says:

I want Jameis. I want to see the first 40/40 qb! Plus I’m all in on the tank and reset. But they just made our cap next year even worse to try to salvage an 8-9 club with no hope at QB barring Trask or a draft pick shocking the world.

  30. HC Grover Says:

We want some bailout money. That is not really a bailout and will not be one penny in the caps. Give the Bucs some liquidity so we can get a QB.

  31. Mord Says:

Bucs should at least kick tires on Taylor Heinicke and maaaaybe Minshew

  32. Allbuccedup Says:

JLs face is saying Tom Brady what do I do next?

  33. Hodad Says:

Joe if you’re wondering, Gabbert, and Lock are probably on the list.

  34. BUCman Says:

We should be all-in on Kyle Trask this season. We need a veteran who will not only be a viable backup but also someone who will work well alongside Trask in the QB room. Mayfield would be self centered and combative which would only hurt Trask’s development.

  35. UKBuccaneer Says:

The bucs have looked at Trask on a daily basis for a couple of years now and still clearly have no faith in him. He’s clearly not the answer.

  36. Bickle Says:

    F’n Brisset.

  37. KCMO_Bucs Says:

    Let’s go get Colin Kaepernick

  38. Ninety9buc Says:

    Cooper Rush!!!!!!!

Come on. He should be starting for Dallas!!!

  39. adam from ny Says:

    the return of tim tee-bro

  40. Marine Buc Says:

    I agree with the above.

We should go out and sign Colin Kaepernick and Tim Tebow to back up Kyle Trask.

    Problem solved…

  41. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

“Surely JL isn’t dumb enough to repeat his 2022 mistakes: overspend big-time on big names, end up with a 8-9 record, then pay for it for the next several years with even more mediocre teams.”

Let’s hope not. It is a bitter pill to swallow.

But once Buc fans face it and accept reality it won’t sting as much…

  42. Goatfarmer Says:

    Norm Snead and Joe Kapp.

  43. DaPostman Says:

Team went 8-10 with Brady at QB. Do you think it really matters who the new QB will be. The team is bad just like it was during the lost decade. When they signed Brady they drafted and signed quite a few really good players like Gronk, AB, Wirfs, Winfield & Fournette. Now Gronk, AB & Fournette are done. Team needs to restock before signing some middling QB.

  44. SKBucsFan Says:

    Oh no…does veteran mean Jameis?

  45. sasquatch Says:

While Joe was shoveling the Lamar horsesh!t, a few of the sane people said they’d probably target Mayfield and Brissett. Go figure… you buy the hype of the Speculative Nonsense Industrial Complex or you use your brain.

  46. Obvious Says:

You know what, I’ve made up my mind..

I’m in the “RIDE OR DIE WITH TRASK” camp. And here’s why.
First off I’ve got Nothing against any of the qb’s being mentioned. Besides this and that here and there between them. NO that’s Not why. Nothing to do with it.

I GOT A TASTE! I tasted “Sunday Football Ecstacy” First hand. It’s REAL NICE and it feels Right.
I thought it over carefully. I’ve decided that I’d Rather have a TOP 5 QB, Every Season with “NOT ONLY A SLIM CHANCE TO WIN BUT A REAL CHANCE TO WIN IT ALL EVERY YEAR!”

THAT’S WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE TEAM! THAT’S WHAT’S “GREAT” FOR YOU AND ME! And “THAT’S” the “THE (TRUTH) OF THE (TRUTH)”! I just don’t know how else to say it than to just Scream It….

If we go with ANY of these other guys we are going to Hate Ourselves for Talking Ourselves into it.

If the TRuE PaTH is Ride or Die with Trask. As NO MATTER your point of view. He’s Destine, He Sucks, He Could Be……. It doesn’t matter. If we choose “Whoever” over Trask then we take Away Our Own TRUEST path to INNER HAPPINESS AND GREAT DESTINY!

If we choose any of the others the TRUTH of the TRUTH is WE DOOM OURSELVES TO MEDIOCRITIC FOREVER ETERNAL EMPTYNESS THAT IS THE VERY SAME TORTUROUS HE!! WE JUST GOT DONE WALKING OUT OF!

I DON’T WANT TO GO BACK!

And as MANY have said. Trask WILL either EXCEL into the Stars, Or he WILL Crash and Burn! If he Burns, YOU AND I GET OUR FRANCHISE QB! We’ll, chances are Very Good that we REALLY WILL!

I mean, I just DON’T SEE another way than to Ride or Die with Trask. How about an HONEST Tank or Swim… Just Sayin 😉

  47. Usedtocould Says:

    Baker, Baker, tud maker

  48. Nybuccguy Says:

No to Brissett and Mayfield. They are both proven scrubs.

Let’s roll with Trask and sink or swim with him. Bring in Lock as a backup and draft a #3 with a late round pick.

  49. Christos Says:

    Unbelievable. Just NOOOOO.
Netither of them is any good, just see what you have in Trask.
Have we not seen enough of both of them in the last couple of years, they are not good.
I ve been a Bucs fan in Greece since 1998. We have seen some good years we have seen many bad ones too. Especially in the lost decade. Sure i was dissapointed some times but i was always watching every game no matter how bad was the team. Only 2 times I stopped wathcing a game because i could see the players quit. I even watched all the games in Winstons 30 INT season where in about 6 or 7 games he threw a pick in the first couple of plays. Icluding the London 2019 game which was my first Bucs game up close. I m a Bucs fan and i support the team.
But honestly if Mayfield or Brissett is the QB of the Bucs next season i really would not have the appetite and the mood to watch games. Go with Trask if they are the only other options. Even if we get only 2 or 3 wins its fine just build for the future. But nooooo to Mayfield and Brissette just no, i dont want to see that.
    Go Bucs

    Trask,Mayfield,Kapernick.

    ——–

Nah, in that case make it Trask, Gabbert and Kapernick, since, afterall, it was Gabbert that sent Kapernick to the bench, then after the POS gets benched, he throws a fit, starts his anti-cop, spit on the flag routine. But hey, being woke is HUGE money, and the guy went from failed NFL QB to making tens of millions. Good for him figuring out how to profit off hatred and fake news, I’d certainly do the same, even do the same thing as him and throw my parents under the bus for that kind of money.

  53. BigZ Says:

JG will be a raider and talk about an injury prone qb.

  54. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Todd Bowles is trying to save his job.

The reality of the matter is that the Bucs are going to have a losing record regardless of who is at quarterback.

The Bucs defense from last year will more than likely lose the following starters to free agency/salary cap casualties:
LVD, Hicks, Dean, SMB, Nunez, Gholston, Nelson, Nassib

Shaq Barrett is coming off of an Achilles surgery.

That means JTS, White, Winfield are the only starters from last year that the Bucs have currently on their roster.

The Bucs need about $10 million in cap space to sign their draft picks, and currently the Bucs do not have that money.

Please explain to me how Baker Mayfield or Jacoby Brissett win with a Bucs team with an extremely depleted defense which as it stands now will be one of the worst defenses in the NFL next year.

Signing Mayfield or Brissett will cost you $10-15 million dollars, which the Bucs don’t have.

  55. That guy Says:

I love my country but it was his right and freedom to ruin his career. Maybe I’m just a second chance kinda guy but give them guys a try

  58. Jfn99 Says:

Read a report a few days ago saying Heinicke is asking for a $20 million a year deal from Commanders. Unfortunately that appears to be over the Bucs budget.

  59. Power of Pewter Says:

The talking heads will throw every name out there into the hat. Fling enough at the wall and maybe something sticks. It’s all about the clicks, just white noise. Although we can guess likely candidates, nobody knows who the Bucs are talking to, or if any of the names even want to come to a cap-strapped, rebuilding team.

  60. unbelievable Says:

I had a hot girl on my arm at the $50 craps table this weekend, but we were at Cosmo, not Aria.
