The Coaching Carousel

Chris Mortenson and Adam Schefter discuss the general manager and coaching search for Team Glazer in this BSPN video.

Trust Is Key For Team Glazer

December 31st, 2013

Occasionally, Joe likes to try and think like a Glazer. Usually, those thoughts involve afternoon yacht excursions with Miami’s finest brown-skinned women; Joe shows these ladies a special time and boasts of his billion–dollar sports empire.

But when Joe comes back to reality within his Glazer fantasy, Joe thinks about how the Buccaneers owners will make their next move.

When it comes to choosing a general manager or head coach, Joe’s confident trust will be paramount. [read more]

Offensive Head Coach Is Critical

December 31st, 2013
Whisenhunt

Ken Whisenhunt is a wiser move than Lovie Smith

Joe’s got nothing against Lovie Smith or his five winning seasons in nine years in Chicago, but the dreadful offenses he consistently produced represent a red flag as huge as the one that swirled around the Bucs offense in 2013. You remember, the one that only scored 83 points in the second half of 16 games this season.

Anything that ugly is on the head coach. Is Lovie really the guy to pull the NFL’s worst offense from the depths of hell? [read more]

The Big Mistake

December 31st, 2013

O

A lot of Bucs fans are pointing at former commander Greg Schiano as the root of all evil. Some believe former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik was Lucifer personified.

Then there is the third rail. Pat Yasinskas suggests the blame for the woeful last two years isn’t so much on Schiano as it is on the people who hired Schiano, and that is Team Glazer, so Yasinskas suggested on ESPN.com. [read more]

Be Careful Of Rumors

December 31st, 2013

smokescreen

Many Bucs fans were giddy yesterday when the Bucs ended the era of commander Greg Schiano after two raucous seasons that never lacked for drama. Sadly, in the end, there was more drama than wins.

So in the hours after Team Glazer deactivated Schiano’s access card to One Buc Palace, all sorts of names were floated as potential coaching candidates, the biggest name (for locals) was Lovie Smith. [read more]

Rockstar Says Good-Bye

December 30th, 2013

TCDominik11

Ousted Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik issued a statement this evening addressing his 19 years of service to the Buccaneers.

“I have appreciated my 19 seasons as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During that time, Tampa has become home for me and my family. We have developed great relationships with many friends and fans. I am especially proud of the strong connection that now has been built between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization and our military.

“I have been blessed over the years here to work with some of the brightest minds of the game. All told, I have worked with seven men who have served as general managers and 10 who have been head coaches in the National Football League.  Winning SB XXXVII under the direction of head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Rich McKay was an experience I will never forget.  I believe that this team is well positioned for success in the future and I would like to express my gratitude to the Glazer family for the opportunity they provided me nearly 20 years ago to grow and succeed in the NFL.”

Joe wishes Dominik well.

Joe’s not backing off his feeling that Dominik was a solid GM the past couple of years — that’s good, not great. Dominik is not a coach. Regardless, it’s ancient history now. Joe looks forward to Team Glazer signing the best GM on the planet.

Report: Gary Kubiak To Interview With Bucs

December 30th, 2013

BSPN insider Adam Schefter is reporting ousted Texans coach Gary Kubiak will interview with the Bucs for their vacant head coaching position.

Joe wonders, who exactly would interview Kubiak with no Bucs general manager in place?

Joe’s not taking this too seriously.

Greg Schiano Reacts

December 30th, 2013

The defrocked leader of the New Schiano Order held his own news conference this afternoon at a Tampa hotel and gave a classy performance. Essentially, Schiano spent 20+ minutes thanking people and not saying much.

Joe asked him about whether he wanted to coach in the NFL again, or whether Sunday’s game cost Schiano his job, but Schiano wasn’t answering the juicy stuff. Schiano was asked what two “pieces” he was referring to when he said the Bucs defense is two pieces from being dominant, but Schiano wouldn’t go there.

Regardless, it was interesting. Enjoy!

Targeting Chris Ballard?

December 30th, 2013

A Chiefs architect is being mentioned as part of a Lovie Smith package

Rumblings of the Buccaneers’ targets for a new head coach and general manager are everywhere.

Joe’s not on board the Lovie Smith-Rich McKay, time-machine train, which is one of the hot rumors as the Bucs compete with at least six teams for top candidates. But Jason La Canfora added an interesting new wrinkle to that combination on CBSSports.com. [read more]

Doubt BOB Gets Call From Team Glazer

December 30th, 2013

bob

Over the past few days, rumors linked former Bucs commander Greg Schiano to a potential opening at Penn State; rumors Schiano vehemently denied. The main problem was, there wasn’t an opening at Penn State. There, head coach, Bill O’Brien, (often referred to on the Interwebs as “BOB,”) was still entrenched but was being wooed by the Houston Texans. [read more]

Back To The Future?

December 30th, 2013
back to the future

Team Glazer might turn to their time machine

If nothing else, since the jettisoning this morning of former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik and commander Greg Schiano, there will be swirling tea leaves from all the names thrown out as to who will fill the voided seats at One Buc Palace.

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune has his ear to the railroad tracks and tossed out a few names he is hearing through solid sources. [read more]

Bucs In Prime Recruiting Position

December 30th, 2013

Will the Bucs wait for Chargers offensive coordinator and former Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt?

Dear new Bucs head coach and general manager,

You can pick your quarterback.

You’ve got plenty of salary cap room, and there’s more to be found by cutting disappointing, big-money veterans like Davin Joseph.

You can even get crazy and swing a deal for Darrelle Revis and stockpile more cash to retool. [read more]

The End Of The Mike Glennon Era

December 30th, 2013

No chance Team Glazer would have fired Greg Schiano if Glennon was a star-in-waiting

Joe’s sure of one thing about whoever the new Bucs head coach will be. He won’t be rolling with Mike Glennon. No chance.

Sure, Glennon will be here, and he’ll compete, but he’s got a flimsy chance of starting. Team Glazer didn’t drop the hammer on rockstar general Mark Dominik and Greg Schiano to ride No. 8 to the promised land. [read more]

Dominik-Schiano End Was No Surprise

December 30th, 2013

bryan glazerIs anyone stunned out there?

Joe’s not.

Team Glazer was not going to tolerate a second-rate quarterback and a second-rate team. That’s a toxic combination, unless you like losing and making excuses and hearing chuckles from fellow billionaires at the NFL owners meetings. [read more]

Fired!

December 30th, 2013

dominik and schianoRockstar general manager Mark Dominik and head coach Greg Schiano have been fired.

Team Glazer has seen enough!

“The results over the past two years have not lived up to our standards and we believe the time has come to find a new direction. Mark has been a valued member of our organization for two decades and we respect the passion he showed for the Buccaneers during his time here. We thank Greg for his hard work and effort the past two seasons, but we feel these moves are necessary in order to achieve our goals,” said Buccaneers Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer.

Stick with Joe all through the day for all the regime-change news.

“We Have Our Quarterback”

December 30th, 2013
GlennonSchianobills

Greg Schiano anointed No. 8 today

Twittering from One Buc Palace, Tampa Bay Times beat writer shared a conversation he had with Tiquan Underwood and Mike Williams.

It will soothe the Mike Glennon Mob but drive the rest of the Bucs fan base insane.

@NFLStroud – In Bucs team meeting, Greg Schiano said “we have our quarterback,” according to Mike Williams and Tiquan Underwood.

Joe is speechless. No competition for the man leading the NFL’s worst-ranked offense?

Impotence Score = 83

December 30th, 2013

The tally is in. Joe’s highly paid research team has concluded its analysis.

The Bucs offense was dreadful in the second half of games. Their final score was 83 points. That’s 83 points over 16 games. That’s 5.2 points per second half.

Jimminy Christmas! Scoring 10 points per game in the second half would be bad, and that’s double what the Bucs produced.

If Joe were ordered by Team Glazer to fire Greg Schiano and told to give Schiano only one reason for his demise, then Joe would point to the second-half collapses. That’s just bad football. There’s no way to spin it.

Unacceptable Confusion

December 30th, 2013

Cerebral former Bucs TE Dave Moore weighs in on the Bucs’ preparation

Joe blasted the Bucs defense for not showing up yesterday. There was no resistance. Drew Brees, through three quarters, was 22-for-28 for 376 yards and four touchdowns. Brees is great at home, but not that great.

The Bucs’ allegedly good defense was invisible, giving up the booty to the tune of 35 points in those three quarters, and it was all on the defense. The Bucs offense was at least moving the ball and eating up clock during those first 45 minutes. [read more]
