A Plea For Michael Vick

March 4th, 2014

The Bucs aren’t that far away. In fact, they’re loaded with talent. That’s the take today from former longtime Falcons offensive lineman and current NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes.

Dukes hosts a daily sports radio show in Atlanta and is a close follower of the NFC South. He’s scrutinized the Bucs and thinks Michael Vick is the answer to replace the Tampa Bay’s “quality backup,” Mike Glennon. [read more]

“Shocked” If Bucs Don’t Draft QB

March 4th, 2014

One of three QBs who would make the Bucs’ dreams come true, says an NFL Network analyst.

If it isn’t clear by now to the Mike Glennon Mob that the Bucs’ braintrust, including general manager Jason Licht and coach Lovie Smith, are not anointing Mike Glennon starting quarterback, then Joe isn’t sure what to say.

While both Licht and Lovie are quick to point out they believed Glennon did good things last year in less than idyllic conditions, neither thinks his 13-game sample size was enough to stamp Glennon as the leader of the future.

Besides, neither Licht nor Lovie drafted him. They didn’t invest anything in him. [read more]

Understanding, Ordering Your New Bucs Jersey

Is There Enough Room In The Wallet?

March 4th, 2014
Yes, the Bucs have the bread to sign Jared Allen.

Yes, the Bucs have the bread to sign Jared Allen and other big names.

If Joe has learned but one thing since launching this here corner of the Interwebs nearly six years ago, it is Bucs fans just love names they recognize. Ah hell, just cut Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson, so the Bucs can have the gratification of signing Peanut Tillman and Jarius Byrd.

Joe still hasn’t read a reasonable reason why the Bucs would want to get rid of — at worst — the second-best cover corner in the game. And yes, Bucs coach Lovie Smith plays a lot of man coverage with his corners. [read more]

Some claim Dashon Goldson is on the verge of exile

Joe guesses it is the offseason and fans are a combination of mocked drafted out and on edge waiting for the ringing of the free agency dinner bell. This afternoon, Twitter is alive with rumblings the Bucs are seeking a way to unload safety Dashon Goldson.

Joe will stop the Goldson nonsense with words that came straight from the mouth of Bucs coach Lovie Smith from the NFL Scouting Combine two weeks ago. [read more]

$19 Million And Counting

Lovie wants to spend it all

Data haters can scroll down and stop reading, but money-friendly fans can take note. Per multiple reports on BSPN, the Bucs have $19 million available under the 2014 salary cap.

That’s plenty of cash to sign a quarterback, Jared Allen and Michael Bennett. [read more]

Michael Bennett Will Be On The Market

March 3rd, 2014

Yes, it was one of the silliest moves Joe can remember, the Bucs letting 2012 sack leader Michael Bennett walk away for no good reason. No, Bennett will never be confused with Reggie White. But when a team is simply crying for sacks, it shouldn’t let its only proven defensive end who can make quarterbacks cry get away.

Bennett, who was a critical player for the Super Bowl champion Seahawks — imagine that, a guy who couldn’t help the Bucs but could help a team win a Super Bowl — appeared on “The Blitz,” heard exclusively in SiriusXM NFL Radio today to discuss his pending free agency. [read more]

Here Is Your Bucs’ New Red Jersey

March 3rd, 2014

Well, these are better than the white jerseys unveiled this morning. Personally, Joe doesn’t like multi-colored jerseys with different color shoulders. Screams “CFL.” Joe really liked the classic look of the original pewter and red uniforms. No need to fix what wasn’t broken. But given that NIKE had its fingers involved, it could be a whole lot worse. About the only team NIKE hasn’t messed with once they got a team contract was Penn State’s beautiful uniforms.

Thankfully, the Bucs didn’t pull a stunt with black jerseys (yick!). Joe has no idea why people are fascinated with black jerseys. If everyone had black jerseys, then what would be the point? Let the Raiders have their black.

2014 Market Set For Star Cornerbacks

March 3rd, 2014
Revispick

Is Revis earning twice as much as he should be?

Last offseason was a bizarre one for cornerbacks. Free agent corners scored nowhere near the cash they had in previous years, yet injured Darrelle Revis landed a whopper of a payday from former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik.

Revis got $16 million a season while his peers were signing for one-third as much. [read more]

Uniform Euphoria

Look, Joe’s written previously that uniforms are far, far less important than the players wearing them. Joe’s not a fashionista.

The Bucs rolled out part of their new look this morning, and Joe’s very excited to see what the other variations look like, how the jersey looks from behind, and to take in the look in real lighting.

Yeah, Joe gets that any kind of change gets many fans’ underwear in a bunch. Some love it; some don’t. You can’t please everyone. But Joe will wear the new Bucs gear with pride because that’s what fans do, especially when the team is winning.

(Joe can already envision how sweet a Manziel or a Penn jersey will look.)

Joe actually likes that the Bucs took their Lovie Smith overhaul of the franchise all the way. The commitment to a new era is exciting.

Ugly Number For Mike Glennon

March 3rd, 2014

T

Yes, “this Joe” got burned out talking about Mike Glennon. It’s clear from comments made by Bucs coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht that they are intent on securing competition for Glennon. If he wins the competition, then more power to the guy.

Joe understands this. While Glennon showed glimpses of good last season and may have been forced into an ugly pickle, at the end of the day he still quarterbacked the worst offense in the NFL.

But Joe came across an equally ugly number of Glennon’s.

Your 2015 Mock Draft: Jameis Winston

March 3rd, 2014
WaterFootball.com guesses this is your starting Bucs quarterback in 2015. The guess, however, is fraught with obstacles.

WaterFootball.com predicts Winston is your starting Bucs quarterback in 2015. The guess, however, is fraught with obstacles.

OK, we have reached absurdity levels with mock drafts.

The more mock drafts have become popular, the more Joe grows weary of them. Most — not all, but most — of the mockers change their mock drafts nearly on a weekly basis (Joe is looking right at you, you Bristolites). This really annoys Joe and frankly is little more than internet trolling or just throwing s(p)it on the wall to see if it sticks. Either stand by your picks or justify moving them, such as, “An NFL player personnel director said… “)

Mock drafts before free agency are little more than mental masturbation. If a team fills a need through a trade or a free agent signing, then what’s the point of drafting for the same position? [read more]

Lovie’s Defense Needs Darrelle Revis

March 2nd, 2014

Lovie goes deeper into his cover philosophy

It is a bonfire lit by Jason La Canfora that won’t die and should burn for the better part of the next 10 days or so.

Those Darrelle Revis trade flames were fanned yesterday by the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio. His deep research (lawyers tend to do this) determined that two teams that desire Revis are the Broncos and the Patriots.

Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune has been adamant since the rumor was floated that, barring an earthquake of an offer, Bucs coach Lovie Smith will keep Revis. While meeting with Lovie at the combine two weeks ago, Lovie all but told Cummings he is building his secondary schemes around the talents of Revis. [read more]

Yes, the clock is ticking down to the ringing of the dinner bell which opens the floodgates to free agency at 4 p.m. on March 11. In fact, tomorrow, March 3 at 4 p.m., is the deadline for teams to tag players.
