Better than Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald?
Not long ago (months, even), rookie receivers simply were not expected to do much. NFL history suggested they needed time adjusting.
Not any more. With the likes of Odell Beckham, Sammy Watkins and Kelvin Benjamin, this year’s NFL rookie receiver class has turned the NFL on its ears. [read more]

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida. [read more]

The spreadsheet geeks weigh in
It was the end of the 2012 season. Bucs sacks leader Michael Bennett was allowed to walk for no good reason, and the Bucs had an opening at defensive end.
Then-Bucs commander Greg Schiano gifted underwhelming defensive end Da’Quan Bowers with a starting gig to fill the void. [read more]

Will Chip Kelly make these guys drool?
In the wake of Chip Kelly being granted total control of Eagles personnel this weekend, the buzz out of Philadelphia is that now nobody can stand in the way of Kelly making an unprecedented blockbuster trade offer to the Buccaneers for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
Joe’s calling it the Mortgage for Marcus. [read more]

Ravens starting cornerback Rashaan Melvin
Playoff football is a beautiful yet depressing thing to watch.
Joe really enjoyed the games yesterday, but they illustrate how far the Buccaneers, 30-70 in their last 100 outings, are from playing in January. [read more]

It is a long way from January 2016, but Joe is going to guess that after a horrific 2014 (barring Tampa Bay drafting Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota) a garbage season won’t cut it in 2015.
The Bucs came off a very bad 2013, a year in which its franchise quarterback went mental. [read more]

The San Francisco Chronicle hints Jim Harbaugh, right, was run from the 49ers because he wouldn’t can his offensive coordinator, Greg Roman.
To read the San Francisco newspapers and various 49ers blogs, offensive coordinator Greg Roman seems to be a modern version of Mike Shula, when he ran the Tampa Bay offense.
It seems, per Joe’s browsing, that the rift between 49ers front office types and recently bolted coach Jim Harbaugh was based on what management felt was ineptitude by Roman. [read more]

An extraordinarily tiny percentage of JoeBucsFan.com readers comment on posts here. Joe is appreciative. The comments keep things, um, interesting.
Right now, Joe is experiencing a glitch in the commenting system that is delaying most comments from posting on the website. They appear, but not as fast it they should. The issue might not be corrected entirely until Saturday.
Joe appreciates your patience and patronage as this matter is addressed.

FoxSports.com reports the Bucs have interviewed 49ers OC Greg Roman for the same gig with Tampa Bay.
Well, well, well. Joe is happy someone with influence over at One Buc Palace reads Joe. As it seems, the Bucs conducted their first interview for the vacant offensive coordinator gig, and that was with 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
The Bucs’ braintrust didn’t just go to the Rose Bowl to have a few beers and check out (future) quarterback Jameis Winston. [read more]

Joe has learned former NFL offensive assistant and college head coach Charlie Weis would love to work with Lovie Smith.
Recently re-signed receiver Louis Murphy and tight end Brandon Myers stated, in part, they wanted to be with the Bucs for the soon-to-come turnaround.
Murphy, in particular, said he believes in Lovie Smith and is convinced the Bucs will soon be a force in the NFC South.
Those two players are not alone. [read more]

49ers OC Greg Roman’s resume seems to fit Lovie Smith’s philosophy.
Joe first wrote about the possibility of the Bucs and 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman back in November 2013. Then, Joe tossed out the idea of Roman replacing then-Bucs commander Greg Schiano, if Team Glazer wanted to make a change.
Joe is still intrigued by Roman. Doing a bit of research, Roman’s numbers won’t win over the fantasy football-types. [read more]

Hiring Rob Chudzinski could signal a Marcus Mariota pick.
Yesterday’s Rose Bowl, in which FSU’s rotten defense couldn’t slow down Oregon and quarterback Marcus Mariota — who would have thunk that? — it seemed to do nothing but reinforce everyone’s pregame opinion of who the Bucs should draft at quarterback.
ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas was intrigued by Mariota prior to the Rose Bowl. [read more]

Leonard Johnson rode a big rollercoaster this season, one that ended on the rise.
Nickel cornerback Leonard Johnson really had an up and down season, much like his career has been up and down.
In 2012, the undrafted rookie had three interceptions in limited time playing plenty of man coverage on the outside, as he soaked up mentoring from one of his boyhood heroes: Ronde Barber. [read more]

The “Custodian of Canton” believes folks who wear suits at One Buc Palace panicked watching the Bucs nearly lose the Chase for Jameis.
Not even copious amounts of alcoholic beverages over the past couple of days with friends and neighbors have shaken Joe’s memories of the win of a loss Sunday, when the Bucs nearly gagged away the Chase for Jameis and lost the first overall pick in the draft.
Watching the game unfold, Joe had the very same feeling he had when he was watching Lovie Smith and his then-Bears squad unable to beat the Packers in 2010. [read more]
