WR Options For The Bucs

Trade option for Bucs?

Trade option for Bucs?

Here is some bad news, Bucs fans: Just last week, Joe heard Pat Kirwan, of SiriusXM NFL Radio fame and the former Jets director of player personnel, talk about options for teams when they lose players to injuries in mid-October.

In short, Kirwan said there are no answers walking the streets at any position. If anything, players signed off the street in mid-October are developmental guys who teams would hope may be able to contribute in 2017. So there are no viable unemployed options to fill the void left by Vincent Jackson.

But could a trade be in the offing?

A loyal reader by the name of Chris Bell Twittered Joe that perhaps the Bucs could go after Alshon Jeffery and/or Terrelle Pryor.

Excellent suggestions for a variety of reasons. The Bears, who Jeffery plays for, are spiraling downwards and look to be in competition with the Browns for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. One would think the Bears are in a rebuilding mode and looking to stockpile draft picks. A free agent after this season, Jeffery wouldn’t cost much.

Same with the Browns, but in a different matter. Pryor may come cheap so Cleveland may elect to roll the dice and take their chances of re-signing the soon-to-be free agent.

Joe likes Pryor’s mentality. He’s the anti-Tim Tebow.

Pryor, like Tebow, had a lot of success in college. Not as much, mind you, but Pryor was successful. Like Tebow, he ran that junk spread-option which does not translate well into the NFL. Like Tebow, Pryor was thought to be a marginal quarterback prospect.

Unlike Tebow, Pryor didn’t pout when teams essentially told him to give up quarterback. Instead of pulling a Tebow and pouting and running off to baseball. Pryor put his nose to the proverbial grindstone and was bound and determined to find a place in the NFL whatever the position. If Tebow had the same desire, he’d likely be on an NFL roster, likely the Bucs‘. Pryor turned into a wide receiver, and not a bad one at that. He averages 12.5 yards a catch with schlock quarterbacks.

The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.

Even if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was able to pull off a trade, when would a new receiver be able to have a grasp of Dirk Koetter’s playbook, by Thanksgiving?

If Licht was to trade for a receiver, Joe hopes it isn’t just for this season, but with a look towards seasons beyond.

  1. Chris Says:

Cleveland already said everyone but Pryor is available

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

If you can pull it off go both of them.

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

Knowin our luck Pryor comes here and plays like Richard Pryor.

  4. @Hands2theface Says:

Dewey, Richard might have been pretty good. Couldn’t be as bad as some of the WR’S we’ve run through here over the years.

  5. BKNYfootballhead Says:

    @ Dewey

We could use a burner. Someone that could scorch the field

  6. @Hands2theface Says:

Who are we kidding, Richard would be serving multiple suspensions due substance abuse…he’d never see the field.

  7. Jason Says:

The cost of Terrelle Pryor would be potentially too high for a player on a one year contract. If he is a must have player wait till he hits free agency. Otherwise this draft has Mike Williams or Juju Smith – Schuster.

  8. Joseph Mamma Says:

Tebow was drafted in the first round of the draft, so I guess he wasn’t considered a marginal quarterback prospect by everyone.

  9. Doctor Stroud Says:

Is all of this avalanche of “bad news” a way of preparing us mentally for yet another losing season? If Jason Licht doesn’t make a trade before the November 1st deadline, does that mean that he is waving the white flag for the season?

  10. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Roddy white

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

lol. some folks are to young to know who Richard Pryor is. Nice comeback jokes. I think he would be a nice addition but if Chris is right and Cleve doesn’t want to part ways with him then i wouldn’t mind Jeffrey.

  12. JMN Says:

No way Cleveland lets Pryor go. He is a player you keep when rebuilding. Jeffrey is an interesting option but Licht can’t give up to much for him.

  13. WutdaBUCisthis? Says:

    What’s up Doc
Not so M.D. If he doesn’t make one, doesn’t mean he didn’t try. I’m sure the Glazers are telling him to win NOW. If #13 aka GODZILLA is to be double teamed then our other wide out will ball out. Mark my words

  14. Warrenfb12 Says:

I don’t see them making a move. They didn’t last year. They will look to Louis Murphy and Cecil Shorts. Durability is a constant issue at key positions for this team.

  15. #BreatheThruAguaybrowz19 Says:

What’s fair value for Jeffrey? 2nd? 1st?? Can’t see Licht just renting him for any high pick. Would need to lock him up to an extension and be part of long term. Otherwise we prob just stay in house and see who steps up.

  16. JonBuc Says:

The Roddy White ship has sailed….maybe an option in the preseason…but now is a pulled hamstring just waiting to happen ( see Cecil Jean-Shorts ).

  17. KingBuc17 Says:

Here we go and get another x Falcon in Roddy White…VJax clone. I hope they get a speedy WR2. I like Pryor as he is an above average WR2 but would likely cost us a 4th rounder. AJ is way too expensive and on the back side of his career. I hope they target Jamison Crowder, Washington’s third plus returns kicks….

  18. tickrdr Says:

FWIW, Terrelle Pryor is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury, and may not be available to play vs. Cinn this weekend.

    tickrdr

  19. Erik w/ Clean Athletics & United Games - a new 'Interactive' Fantasy Sports app by the makers of Madden Football Says:

Shep at #2 could be the answer, my friends.

Give him a chance to shine there and I have a weird feeling that he might turn into a star.

But Alshon or Pryor would be fantastic trades if we can pull off either one of those.

  20. Patrick in VA Says:

Honestly, the prospect of getting Pryor is pretty appealing. I think Monken could bring him along a lot like he’s helped Evans get his mind right and maximize his potential. As Pryor is honing his skills at the position, Monken could get him on a pretty great path. I’m much more keen on a trade or draft. Getting one in FA just doesn’t excite me at all.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe

Get it right Joe ghetto Jesus Tebow did not run off to play baseball he ran off for his next media circus sideshow event, poor baseball just happened to be the victim. Can’t wait until that fool gets exposed. It won’t be long there is always something in the closet of the religious hypocrites. I for one am hoping for a Tebow barnyard animal photo

  22. deminion Says:

Wouldn’t mind Jeffrey at the right price, like a 4th rounder… But we gotta pay ME in the future and Jeffrey needs a new deal…. So gunna have to draft a guy… Shoulda last yr!!!!!!!!!

  23. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Jeffery is ALWAYS hurt, or so it seems. He has played 16 games in only 2 season, and even then he was hurt. Commish said it right, Licht dropped the ball on the WR and D line depth, and now it might end up hurting this season.

  24. pick6 Says:

the bucs have been pretty clear that this is a year for the WRs on their roster to prove their worth. i think the possibility of VJax finishing another season on IR was a definite consideration when they chose to not mess with the WR depth chart. in the long term view, i would think Jameis finding his rhythm with any WR that might be on the roster next year (murphy, shepherd, shorts, dye, etc) is more of a priority than finding a midseason upgrade over a WR2 whose decline they had probably witnessed through the offseason

  25. Waterboy Says:

Percy Harvin, Marques Colston or possibly Devin Hester might be viable 1 year solutions. I was never high on the Roddy White, he’s slow and won’t stretch the field. If Minnesota wasn’t on course to make a super bowl run Cordero Patterson might have also been a good trade option that wouldn’t require high round picks.

  26. pick6 Says:

Alshon Jeffery is the Doug Martin of the WR position…he’s had bouts of bigtime productivity that make people forget he’s been out injured or playing hurt for more than half his career

  27. tmaxcon Says:

Percy Harvin — Fragile Headcase who is one dimensional and cant’ play any longer. Harvin is the last person the bucs need in the locker room and I hate choirboys.

Devin Hester HAS NEVER BEEN A WR PEOPLE WAKE UP……. He is horrible at receiver and is older than dirt

Pick6 nailed in on Jeffries he splashes occasionaly but is hurt more than not just like Martin.

If Murphy, Shorts or Dye are on the roster next year bucs are in a world of hurt just like I said they would be going into the season with a washed up vjax and no help behind him.

  28. Chris Says:

Yeesh, again, the Browns are open to dealing Haden, Thomas, but Pryor is untouchable. Might as well see if we can trade for Gronkowski

  29. ATLBuc Says:

    Torrey Smith or Michael Floyd

  30. DB55 Says:

GMC + Verner + 1st rnd pick = Kelvin Benjamin.

Then sign Karlos Williams off steelers practice squad and go get rashad green from jax. Boom bam we got JW his weapons.

Draft D. Cook and Derwin James and we balling with SWAG!!!

  31. Chris Says:

Lol and DB and all Nole fans dream of FSU south

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    DB55

put the bottle down it’s early my friend and you know I am all about the day time drinking. Benjamin aint going anywhere…. We are more likely to see Tebow fluffing for Vivid Entertainment than Benjamin reuniting with Winston…

  33. Jerry G Says:

Give up Mike Glennon for Pryor and a conditional 4rd Pick from the Browns and i gaurantee you they will pull the trigger because Glennon could be their answer at QB!its a win win for both teams!

  34. tmaxcon Says:

    Jerry G

you need a drug test if you think Glennon has any value…. please explain to me, first what team wants the bum next what gm in the right mind is going to give up any pick for 9 to 10 game rental of a bad backup player with no upside. please help me understand how you can think he has value.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

Kessler has far more upside than 8 in cleveland

  36. Charmin Ultra Yucs Says:

Could we swing a trade for Golden Tate? I know he just had a HUGE game, but he has been the odd man out in Detroit and they need to think about a rebuild as well.

  37. DB55 Says:

    lol lmao lol

Alright scratch the first para the other 2 are still good. Lol.

  38. bluetick14 Says:

Tim Tebow is out of the NFL. Period! It is over. I wish people would stop already. Let him go please.

You’re only half right there. AJ would definitely be more expensive, but I don’t see how you can call a 26 year old WR on the back side of his career.

If we’re going to trade for anyone, as someone mentioned last night, I think Michael Floyd would be our best option. He seems to have fallen down the pecking order for receiving targets on the Cardinals and their GM and our GM are friends.

  40. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

“Junk” spread option. go read that article you posted about Dak Prescott earlier. That’s Myers offense Prescott ran in college, same pass plays that Dallas runs now.

  41. Off the Cuff Says:

Corey Coleman, DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffrey. Tall, fast, great hands

  42. DB55 Says:

I think Cam runs the spread option too. It got them to the sb last yr. something we need to add to the playbook. Jameis may not be faster but def a better runner than mm.

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

    Fun stuff here today!
tmax is right regarding those FA receivers. We have all the injury-prone players we need right now. Pryor would be a nice pick-up but, as mentioned, I don’t think he’s available.

@DB55- Hey man, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere and never too early to start drinking!

  44. CalBucsFan Says:

Other than Evans, there are no other receivers on the current Bucs roster that cause opposing defensive coaches to lose sleep while putting their defensive game plan together.

So why not give Coulston or White (or both) a shot? They’re both veteran receivers and should pick up the system quickly (especially White since he’s familiar with Koetter’s approach already). Yea, I know they’re not No. 1 receivers anymore, but the Bucs need one or two more EXPERIENCED receivers forcing defensive coaches to respect the Bucs passing game and have some restless nights.

Right now, those coaches are saying, “OK, let’s scheme to shut-down Evans. Anybody know the names of the other receivers on the Bucs?”

  45. KingBuc17 Says:

NYJ Enunwa, OAK Seth Roberts, WAS Crowder otherwise we will struggle like we did without him last year.

  46. 813bucboi Says:

the only way I trade for a wr is if its a player on our roster(GMC, Glennon, Banks, Verner)….I would try pierre garson, desean Jackson, alson Jeffery, golden tate….somebody…anybody….

everything is coming back to bite licht in the a$$…..instead of getting a wr in FA he gets a olineman that wont play this year….instead of getting a wr, s or de/dt he makes a trade for a kicker that has struggled out of the gate….he has to fix this….GO BUCS!!!

  47. Joe Says:

Tebow was drafted in the first round of the draft, so I guess he wasn’t considered a marginal quarterback prospect by everyone.

How’d that turn out for the fool who burned a No. 1 pick for him?

  48. mike n Says:

You know Jason is getting a lot of calls. When you trade 2 premium picks for a kicker other GM’s are trying to sell him the Broklyn Bridge and swamp land in Florida too.

  49. feelthepewterpower Says:

    Evan Spencer/Jonathan Krause/Kenny Bell…take your pick 🙂

  50. nate Says:

TRADE MIKE GELLNON AND A FIRST ROUND PICK TO PITTSBURGH FOR ANTONIO BROWN!

  51. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m completely against a trade. We need the picks too badly.

Just sign Roddy White off the street on a 1 year deal, then draft a good WR.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe…ironically, Tebow is a better QB than Johnny Football…who you wanted 😉

  53. bubashep Says:

    Randy. Effin’. Moss.

  54. teacherman777 Says:

    I called this!

    @joe

    You know I did!

Big Joe da Hippy BucFan knows whats up!!

  55. mhall085 Says:

Jeffery is quickly growing disgruntled, as he’s in a contract year, yet the Bears seems to REFUSE to throw to him. By all accounts, he’s healthy.

Give them a 3rd-round pick. Do that today.

  56. tmaxcon Says:

    mhall085

please research his injury history… do we really need another player who is only part time like martin, gmc, ayers, mcdonald, sims, stocker, vjax or any wr not named hump or evans… the entire roster can not be made up of star players who never see the field especially overrated nobody’s like 93….

  57. Doctor Stroud Says:

Has any mid-season trade worked out to help a team make it to the playoffs?

  58. SOEbuc Says:

TEBOW IS JESUS CHRIST! Do I not have to remind you people that he brought a dead man on an airplane back to life lol
