Da’Quan Bowers Likely Out For The Year

May 10th, 2012

Per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, Bucs second-year defensive end Da’Quan Bowers has torn an Achilles tendon and is expected to be lost for the 2012 season.

Bowers is scheduled to have surgery Friday.

Bowers suffered the injury while participating in the Bucs’ offseason conditioning program.

Though it is possible Bowers could return late in the year, that’s more pipe-dream than a realistic expectation. If Bowers were to return, no one knows if he would be 100 percent or how he could play after such a short time after the surgery.

Now one wonders about Bowers’ future. He already has a bum knee and add to that a surgically-repaired Achilles tendon. Not good for a defensive end to have such bad injuries to his wheels.

Bowers was drafted by Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik with a second round draft pick in 2011. He showed flashes of a player who was once thought to be a high draft pick. Bowers slid to the second round over grave concerns about his bum knee.

Michael Bennett will likely replace Bowers full-time at left defensive end in Bowers’ absence.

The Achilles injury Bowers suffered was to his right leg. The knee problem he has battled is his left knee.

    Bring on Freeney

  2. CaliBucFan Says:

    Damn shame…

  3. Nick2 Says:

    WOW

  4. Cmurda Says:

Wow. This is ridiculous. He was primed for a big year. This is the reason that guys fall so hard on draft boards when college injuries arise.

  5. Kujolw Says:

WTF REALLY!!! Well that sucks. Get me all hyped up saying “Bowers to get more snaps” then boom out for the year.

  6. kgh4life Says:

too bad, it was supposed to be his break out year.

  7. BOb Says:

    r u #@A$A#@# kdding me?

  8. Sgt Mike Says:

Guess it really was a huge gamble to draft him. Friggen sux.

  9. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Starting to feel sorry for Mark Dominik, 3 of 4 of his draft picks, except Adrian Claiborne, are turning out to be cripples!
Hope we can find a good D End that was undrafted ?

  10. Drew Says:

Michael Bennett is still here. Go get Dwight Freeney.

  11. Drew Says:

Schiano’s new order. The strong will survive.

  12. Adam Says:

The TIME is saying it’s an ACL but the TRIB is saying Achilles.

  13. Sgt Mike Says:

After spending 20 minutes with Rice and Young talking about the 49ers bspn told us less than your developing story line. I hate that crappy station. I long for the man channel NFL network.

  14. JonBuc Says:

Buzzkill….was very much looking forward to watching him this year.

  15. Big Picture Guy Says:

Adam, that’s because Stephen Holder didn’t pass anatomy in HS.

Big opportunity for the DEs we signed as FAs to step up. Good thing we swung for the fences on our insurance backups and got a guy from Wagner college. Yikes!

  16. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Well…this is painful because I really felt Bowers was on the verge of breaking out this year. Not good at all.

I am so very sick of injury prone players at this point.

  17. mjmoody Says:

Sooo, is it too recent to suggest maybe the Bucs’ shouldn’t draft from Clemson anymore? 🙂 On the business side of things, a 2nd round pick and an RDE. I like the big body and the athleticism, but I would think it’s easier to find a pass rusher on the right side than on the left. George Johnson for example. Sorry about your luck and get better soon, but to this date, what exactly did we lose that we Already had?

  18. SilenceTheCritics Says:

This is crazy we just cant catch a dam break. kid blew out his knee in college and now this.. Im thinking we must be cursed. This just isnt normal for so many injuries to occur with high draft picks

  19. Joe Says:

    Adam:

It’s his Achilles to his right leg.

  20. Big Picture Guy Says:

Freeney could be had, that’s not a ridiculous proposition.

Colts are switching to a 3-4, and Freeney has expressed he does not want to be a stand-up OLB in that scheme. 3rd round pick in 2013 maybe?

  21. George Says:

Who’s the idiot calling for Dwight Freeney? Not happening.

  22. Bobby Says:

RATTTTTTTSSSS!!!!!!!! I think that kid had huge potential. Oh well….he’s still young. I guess we’ll have to see how he rehabs. Can’t cry about spilled milk…let’s get another depth player. He is a big loss though. He and Bennett rotating was going to be great.

  23. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Bowers played in 12 games last year, with one sack.
Healthy or not, he did not appear to be as good as Adrian Claiborne.
Maybe coaching/scheme would have helped, but we now must move on w/o him.
    At least for this year.
Mark Dominik is on a roll lately, maybe the Rockstar can find us an under the radar replacement ?

  24. Thomas2.2 Says:

Sad to hear this, I was impressed by this kid. Dang!

Kind of strange hearing that a D Lineman not Gerald is out for the year.

  25. Brad Says:

If Mark wants to maintain the rock star image he needs to make a move for Osi from the Giants immediately. Our weakness on the D from last year just got weaker and Bennett is good for depth but he’s no pass rushing specialist.

  26. BucsfaninMi Says:

    Damn.

  27. JonBuc Says:

Styles Gee White is on line 2…:)

  28. Macabee Says:

This is genuinely bad news, but we’ll find a way to replace him. It’s the nature of the game. This may not mean very much, but it appears that Las Vegas doesn’t think much of our chances this year!

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Las-Vegas-now-has-point-spreads-for-240-regular-season-games.html

  29. Eric Says:

    That aint good.

Shows what a crap shoot the NFL draft can be.

  30. MOBucs Says:

Tough news, but Bennett is a very solid player. Andre Carter is a FA still I think. He’d be a great replacement. Trading for Osi would be stupendous but I’m doubting that happens unless NY isn’t looking for much compensation. Not to mention he has a bum knee also.

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

How does this happen during workouts? I don’t understand wtf he was doing to tear his achilles. This is messed up and I feel bad for him, but what was he doing that caused this. I can’t think of any weight lifting activity to cause this. I can think of twisting or rolling over ankles but it almost seems like it takes outside source to tear an achilles. Weird deal.

  32. positive dude Says:

Rockstar is burning up the phonelines as we speak…wait for it.

  33. Matt Says:

    Antwan Odom is still available???

  34. Macabee Says:

It looks like the Bucs have already reacted to Bowers injury. Earlier today they announced the signing of Tiquan Underwood and the release of Myles Wade.

Now it appears they have brought DT Myles Wade back and instead released Jordan Jefferson, the LSU QB that Schiano thought had so much upside! Stay tuned, things are moving pretty fast!

  35. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

i know hes comin off an injury but Andre Carter would be a great fit, 76 sacks in 11 seasons 10 of them comin last year. sux tho i was hopin for a MONSTER year outta Bowers. whats with our luck????? BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Rrsrq Says:

    Damn, Damn, Damn, Damned.

  37. BucFan20 Says:

This is bad news. But at least it’s happening now and not during the season. So there is time to replace him.

  38. Knucknbuc Says:

Were still gonna be alright at this spot everyone. I love Daquan and potential but potential is exactly that. It sucks because I think this could of been a breakout year for him but we do have a solid replacement in Michael Bennett. Who is also looking and ready to break out and make big bucks possibly in fa nExt year. Bowers s loss is Bennett opportunity with George Johnson waiting in the wings.

  39. GenocideD Says:

He’s the player I was most excited about watching. DAMN IT! ><
The only upside is that it's his right achilles and not his left beings how he plays the left side.

  40. Mr Lucky Says:

Well so much for giving the 2011 draft class an A grade.

  41. raphael Says:

the guy was working harder than anybody…..damn …that sucks…

  42. Hectic Buc Says:

this is so heart breaking for daquan and all the bucs fans this really hurts. hope dom can get a replacment for but i still dont think he will be easly replaced. only upside we get to take a better look at myles DE maybe. so sad speedy recovery 91.

  43. eric Says:

Gotta be a rutgers guy we can bring in…..

  44. raphael Says:

Daquan tweeted he will play this year…..seems optimistic

  45. raphael Says:

    @eric … you really are 13 yrs old aren’t you…

  46. Bricen Says:

Didn’t Bowers have like 10 TFLs in one game last year?

  47. Joe Says:

Gotta be a rutgers guy we can bring in…..

    LOL

  48. raphael Says:

    what a bunch of morons

  49. Brain Says:

This really, really, really blows. Bowers was the best player on the field in 1-2 games last season. He’s that good.

  50. MOBucs Says:

@ Eric… Your forgetting about Rutgers Alum George Johnson.

  51. raphael Says:

@ brian very true … too bad it seems to be a joke to the kids on this site

  52. Macabee Says:

With Bennett there as the starter, as I recall Tim Crowder can play the right or the left side. I checked Rotoworld and he has not resigned with another team yet. In a pinch, he might be able to fill in until Bowers returns and he won’t be expensive. Just a thought!

  53. Vince Says:

And the hits just keep on coming! Damn it to hell

  54. Big Picture Guy Says:

Tim Crowder to the rescue! Bring back Raheem! Mentality before reality, that Achilles will be healed by Monday!

  55. thibs5599 Says:

This just sucks, as many have said he was suppose to have a break out year, and now he is in the same boat as McCoy and Price. Hang in their Clayborn please, if something happens to you we are seriously cursed.

Go get Carter, at first I was thinking Osi, but not sure what that would cost and he would want a contract right away. If Bennett produces big time this year would rather give that contract to him. Carter is older however he had 10 sacks as a 4-3 end last year with the Pats, worth a shot and would not cost that much.

I just feel bad for the kid, I know it feels, injuries flat out SUCK.

  56. thibs5599 Says:

He has the same injury as Suggs, who is extremely adamant about coming back this season during week 7 or 8, so you never know who could be back mid season.

  57. Jim Says:

Gotta put my 2 cents in, This Sucks Big Time!!!

  58. chrisfwc. :) Says:

Me too. This really blows. I was hoping for 10 sacks from him.1st bad news under the new coaches. I’d give him my achilles if that would get him on the field. He is so close to being a dominant LDE in the NFL. Heal-up quick. Your team needs you.

  59. Architek Says:

Get well soon Bowers. Be patient its going to be alright bro.

  60. Bucnjim Says:

Seems like a very strange injury for off season work outs! Sorry for him, but most of the time these type of injuries happen when players are out of shape then they go all out. Name me one player who’s had an achillies injury outside of a game situation? Never really heard of one in the OFF season!

  61. Bricen Says:

    Terrell Suggs -_-

  62. Thomas2.2 Says:

Bowers has the right attitude, determined to play this year. I love his fight.

Gerald would already be out in San Diego partying up over another year of pay and no work.

  63. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

    @Bucnjim,

its a freak injury but it happened to a guy i work with while he was cuttin grass. its one of those things you take for granted until you twist wrong and it pops. totally sux for this kid.

  64. Hawaiian Buc Says:

That blows. I was really looking forward to seeing him perform this year. That is truly a horrible injury, one that is very difficult to ever come back at full strength.

  65. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Damn Thomas, why bring up McCoy in a situation like this? What does it prove, other than you are an arse? Sometimes its better for you to just say nothing. Besides the fact that it is a lie (he was training in San Diego jack arse), where many many pro athletes do. You are totally classless, and I am ashamed that we cheer for the same team.

  66. FlBoy84 Says:

    @BigMacAttack,

I tore my Achilles after I tripped stepping off of a curb, so anything is possible.

    .
Funny how GMC talks the same way and it does no good with you.

  68. Sensiblebuc Says:

An achilles injury is worse than an ACL in terms of recovery time. He’ll be out for the year and next year he’ll be at about 75-80%.

  69. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I sick of getting spammed…I’m finding another site. (maybe)

  70. ben Says:

Next man up, no time for mental midgets

  71. BigMacAttack Says:

    Thx Flboy,
It just seems like such a freak thing to do. I have rolled, sprained, torn up my ankles so many times playing basketball over many years, but never hurt my achilles. This really blows, and I hate it for him as well as Earnest Graham. Seems to be a rash of these injuries going around, and a hard one to recover from. I hope Bowers is right about getting back sooner, and Suggs too. I hate to see players get serious injuries….. well unless they’re Saints. No not really, but I had to say that because I hate the lovin crap out of the Saints.

  72. BigMacAttack Says:

Pete, whats up with the spam? Are they hitting your email or what? I use an email on this site, that I don’t use for anything else.

  73. BigMacAttack Says:

One of these days, Thomas is going to be driving his Prius to work and accidentally run into McCoy’s vehicle on the road. He’ll get out and say “Oh I’m so sorry Mr. McCoy. You’re the greatest. Can I have your autograph? Will you sign my Obama bumper sticker? I’m in my 14’th year of Law School, so this is for sure my fault.”

  74. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’ve been lucky to remain relatively injury free throughout my basketball career, but the one injury I have always feared the most is the achilles. Besides it being such a freak injury, it’s one that almost never heals to the point where you can get back to 100%. I hope I’m wrong with Bowers (he at least has youth on his side), but its just a devastating injury. I feel really bad for him, he just seems to not be able to catch a break.

  75. Dave Says:

That sucks, he was coming on at the end and I would have loved to see him playing with a healthy McCoy next to him.

  76. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @BigMac,

I would much rather Thomas call GMC a softy, and tell him he doesn’t work hard. I think your scenario is much more likely to happen.

  77. Thomas2.2 Says:

For the record: the “softy” nickname was coined by Warren Sapp and a local radio host.

Second, if I met Gerald I would wish him luck and tell him that he seems like a nice guy – trust me – I know that he could care less about any of our opinions.

Just a little tip: if you look close you will see I commend and defend deserving players, like Clayborn, Ronde, Free, Grimm, DJ, Pig Penn usually, E Graham, Bowers (late last year) etc, but I point out the failures of those who have not played up to par – especially those overpaid and overhyped players.

You argue repetition: that is true but only to dismiss the repeated propaganda spun by some very subjective fans.

Even Hawaiian has accepted the undeniable truth / Gerald has been a big disappointment and if he doesnt deliver this year that will be 3 wasted years, 30+ million dollars.

Even Dom admitted this. So stop coddling this guy, demand that he play to his draft and pay level – when he doesn’t admit it.

You won’t make him better by making excuses for him.

  78. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

    @Thomas2.2

you state your opinion and while its your and opinions are rarely wrong,, if you admit that GMC wouldnt care about your opinion then why post it? i know your posting on a free blog but seems like most of the time you just throw yours out there every chance you get. we get it you hate the guy AS A PLAYER, but when hes healthy he effective. just let it go, you sound like a stalking exboyfriend who wont let the girl move on, to be honest im startin to think you love him! BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

  79. Hawaiian Buc Says:

If that’s what you would say if you met Gerald then you are a fake (no shock there). You should either tell him what you have been saying to us for 3 years, or you should shut your mouth. It’s people like you that make players want to stay away from the fans.

You only commend players by criticizing others. You don’t make one post without criticizing someone. That is a fact. This is why your alleged positive posts are in fact, negative. You are obviously the type of person that makes yourself feel better by putting down others.

Third, don’t put words in my mouth. I have never said he’s been a big disappointment, and neither did Dominik. It’s been disappointing that he has been injured, but he has not been a disappointment. I guess you don’t understand the difference – amazing that you are an alleged lawyer, yet you don’t understand an obvious difference. Why don’t, for once, you just acknowledge what we all know, that you are an idiot. Joe knows it, I know it, and everyone on this site knows it. There’s only one person on this site that has ever had an entire post dedicated to how stupid you are, and if you forgot, you are that person. Doesn’t that tell you something? Do you really believe that it is all of us that are the idiots, and you are the only smart one? If so, why don’t you just leave the site? Of course you won’t, because this is probably the only place you feel like a man. You are here for nothing more than our own entertainment. You are basically the bearded lady circus freak of Joe Bucs Fan.

  80. Stevek Says:

Can we please ship out a 3rd round pick for Osi? That would be huge!

  81. Stevek Says:

Can we please ship out a 3rd round pick for Osi?

Too bad for Bowers, hope he keeps his head up and see him next year healthy. Hope his knee can mend too.

I hope Gerald is doing yoga.

  82. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

would a 3rd round be enough for Osi? and he’ll want a new contract then what do we do when Bowers comes back? Andre Carter would come cheaper and could shift into a backup role when Bowers returns. i bet their looking into all options. BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!

  83. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m all for getting Osi, but I think the problem with him is his contract. He’s going to want absurd money, and he is without a doubt on the downswing of his career (although he’s still pretty damn good).

  84. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Ok Hawaiian:

In 2 seasons: 30 tackles, 4 sacks – 14 wins, last and next to last division finishes, no playoffs, another coach run out of town and Gerald hasn’t been a disappointment – brilliant!

I am sure that was what Dom and Rah expected when they made the Gerald pick and signed him to that contract.

BTW: bleacherreport called the Gerald contract one of the 25 worst in NFL history.

More publications calling Gerald a bust.

Rah called his fundamentals pop Warner / sure not a disappointment.

Ask your favorite coach rah rah if he thinks Gerald was a disappointment?

Hawaiian: you have been so wrong, so often it is to the point where I am able to identify the correct side of an argument by taking the position opposing you.

If memory serves, you were a huge RahRah guy, anti- free agency guy during 09-11, you argued how good Biggers was going into 2011, you freaked out on me before the season when I labeled Quincy as Jane , you argued with me when I said ruud should be retained.

The list is endless. Just sit back and read bc you embarrass yourself by how wrong you are. You would do better flipping a coin.

  85. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE TIRED OF THOMAS2.2

hes a lawyer right? well if thats true then it proves he will argue if the sky is blue, so instead of gettin pulled into his attention grasping rants, WHY DONT WE ALL JUST IGNORE HIS POSTS & COMMENTS. when he posts something just skip over his post, if he singles someone out ignore it. its like a kid throwing a tantrum, if you dont buy into it or cater to it the child will stop. so lets treat him like a child and ignore his posts. LETS TRY AND KEEP THIS PAGE A POSITIVE SITE for bucs fans who want to talk about good things going on. BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

  86. Rrsrq Says:

So why is this blog about GMC? Is he moving to L defensive end? Just curious.

  87. St Augustine Says:

Thomas 2.2 makes a lot of sense a lot of times. I do NOT see negative comments done with malicious intentions. Just my opinion. Fact is, he’s a Buccaneer fan and that’s all that matters to me. I appreciate everyone’s opinions including his and hope to read more. Go Bucs!

  88. ElioT Says:

Sh*t, pi$s, a*s, sh*t, as$!!!! This is such BS!!! Dude has so much promise. F**k!!!!

  89. Hawaiian Buc Says:

That’s a bunch of bullspit Thomas! I have never been against free agency. I never said Biggers was going to be great. The ONLY thing I have EVER said about Biggers is that he gets a bit of a pass because he shouldn’t be covering other teams #1. I have also never once defended Quincy Black. So that is 3 things that are completely false. You are not going to lie about me to prove your stupid point. So what exactly have I been wrong about (aside from Raheem, which I have acknowledged)? Or should I say, what other false statements would you like to make about me.

And as far as Gerald, he’s been injured you fool! He can’t be judged one way or the other. You f-ing moron! It’s disappointing he’s been injured. You site f-ing Bleacher Report!!!! How moronic, fits you perfectly. Bleacher Report, lol. Give me a break. You are a damn fool.

And here we go again, this article is about the loss of Bowers, yet you turn it into a GMC bash session. Show me one person before you that brought up GMC. You won’t, because you are the one. Your hatred of him is sickening.

  90. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @St. Augustine,

You must be new to the board. If you only knew…….

  91. ElioT Says:

    fuc*, fuc*, fu*k, F!!!!!!!!!

  92. positive dude Says:

Rockstar needs to get to work. Not taking away from Gerald or Price but with there body of work so far not sure what to expect (healthy). If Schiano wants to win we have to get pressure on the Qb, considering how the secondary played last year. I know Barron will be back there (rookie) and talib may be gone. Osi seems to be just what we need, unless our Giants coaching connection knows different.

  93. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

    @ ElioT

wow, sumthin tells me your a lil upset!!!! but i share your rage, i was sooo xcited to hear he was gonna get more reps. this totally sux!!!!!!! LETS GO BUCS!!!!!

  94. Eric Says:

We had by far the lowest sack total in league last year, with bowers.

Haven’t done much to improve it except hope gmc causes disruption and opens things up. A potentially dubious plan.

Now minus bowers an osi move is in order IMO.

    Money is no object.

  95. SilenceTheCritics Says:

    LMAO @ The BleachReport

  96. Patrick Says:

I’m so sick of our d line!! They’ve been the biggest waste of money for the past 2 seasons! And now we already have our first casualty for the 2012 season!

  97. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Hawaiian:

Your memory is bad. We had a healthy debate on Biggers in 2010 where I argued his deficiencies and you took the position that Biggers was very good – then we saw 2011.

You also argued with me about Ruud, who I defended against many attacks.

And you did argue with me when I said that it was idiotic to sign Black to that contract and let Ruud walk for a small 1 year deal.

The subject was a devastating injury on our D Line, how can you discuss that subject without considering mister “out for the year” himself – Gerald.

I told you all initially: I was hugely encouraged by Bowers late last year, Clay also – Gerald has never sustained their kind of productivity.

So I commend Clay, Bowers and Bennett (solid player)- I saw some positives with Price too but he was clearly not healthy.

  98. BigMacAttack Says:

Bowers is young and hopefully will rebound to be the player they hoped he would be. This does suck for him and the team, but Bennett really is a better DE at this point in time and probably would have started over Bowers. I agree they need a replacement for Bowers, and best to put him on IR with more than a year to recover fully from the injury, provided it is a serious full tear and not something minor (which I hope it is a partial and not so severe). I like the idea of Osi but he won’t be cheap. They could probably get Freeney for a little less and maybe a 2 year contract. Freeney still has great skills and the other DE’s could learn a lot from him, probably more than they could from Osi. Freeney is could guy and may accept a short contract where as Osi would probably want 5 yrs and $50mil. I’m sure Dom could also pick up a decent young DE when the 1000 or so players get cut before opening day. It sure looks like a win picking up Amobi. Maybe it’s time to take another look at GMC at DE.

Thomas, you know I was just messing around with you. This blog wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining without you. But remember, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

  99. kevin Says:

So are the bucs gonna get drew brees ? Is that why they are building the cap back up to 16.5 million? Get drew trade freeman while he still has trade value

  100. kevin Says:

    Trade blount for somebody

  101. Hawaiian Buc Says:

That’s bullspit thomas. You either have me confused with someone else, or are just completely lying. I have never once even talked about Quincy Black. Not once. I never attacked Ruud either, another lie. I wasn’t against us not re-signing Ruud, but I wasn’t all in either. I didn’t take a side on that issue, just stated that he wasn’t an elite LB. Wanna argue that point?

And no, the subject was about Bowers, period. Don’t bring this into an entire D-line discussion, because you know damn well that’s not the case.

I’m pretty pissed about you lying about me. I don’t appreciate you saying that I said things I never said. That’s a b!tch move, but I guess that shouldn’t surprise me.

Devastating news. Last year’s 2nd round pick was a reach with a questionable knee, but an achilles tendon trumps a knee anytime. I hope for his sake that he is able to return someday.

This injury, unfortunately, makes Mark Dominik’s draft picks in the last few years look incredibly bad.

Its hard to put a positive spin on the Bucs in general.

  107. So. Ill. Bucs Says:
