Marcus Spears Thinks Bucs Defense Is “Terrifying”

August 10th, 2021

Bucs ILB Lavonte David.

The Gravediggers have thrown down the gauntlet.

The Bucs’ young secondary issued a mandate earlier in training camp. The goal, outside of winning another Super Bowl? They want to be feared.

Former Cowboys defensive lineman and current BSPN talking head Marcus Spears believes the Bucs’ defense is on its way to accomplishing that.

From the first day pads came on this summer, already there were grumblings about the Bucs offense stinking up the joint from Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians and park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, helmet-tossing, football-punting, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

Spears gave credit to the Bucs’ defense.

“Look, Devin White and Antoine Winfield were young guys who played tremendously for this team down the stretch and especially in the playoffs,” Spears said. “I’m looking forward to watching those guys with [an extra] year of experience and not just a year of experience, but a Super Bowl run.

“This defense is going to be better because their younger players are going to be better and that is terrifying for everyone else in the NFL.”

Then Spears referenced how Brady was agitated over the offense not being sharp.

“This defense has a lot to do with that,” Spears said.

So fast-forward to yesterday where Arians said it was the worst offensive practice he’s seen since he became the Bucs’ coach. And remember, when Arians first got here, the Bucs had no running attack

Joe immediately thought of Spears’ words. “The defense has a lot to do with that.”

Could what we witnessed when the Bucs’ defense totally throttled the high-scoring Chiefs offense in the Super Bowl be the norm this year?

If so, Joe is confident smiles of respect and appreciation will appear on the faces of Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and other Bucs defenders from the glory years.

Thinking of the Bucs defense being better makes Joe’s mouth water.

Wow, never thought I’d get the first comment. That’s what you get when you can’t sleep. (That’s my post, have a good day)

  2. Patrianakos Says:

    Offense sells tickets.
(Check, the schedule is sold out.)
    Defense wins championships.
    (Just don’t burn out early.)

I’ve seen JBF run the gamut Joes from nicknaming RayJay the ‘Den of Depression’ to what I’m seeing now (I’m thinking we should start calling RayJay ‘Woodstock’ … a lovefest run amok). On the one hand, 2021 expectations seem to include the highest scoring offense the Good Lord ever put on the face of the earth. On the other, it now sounds like 2021 expectations now include us having a bad-ass defense that’d give T-Rex a run for his money.

And someplace in the middle I’m seeing Bruce Arians trying his best to keep it all real. BA knows how hard it is to repeat as champions, much less achieve perfection in doing that. Preaching ‘one game at a time’ is one thing. Actually getting all 53 guys to play every down with that mentality apparently is a bit harder. On the offensive side, I get the feeling that Tom Brady will keep those guys motivated … and humble. On the defensive side, got a hunch that Todd Bowles is the one who’ll do that, with on-the-field help from a few vets like JPP & maybe even a youngster named White.

    Hows the Special Teams doing?

Let’s goooooo. Defense wins champs. The Bucs have proved that twice now in 2 diff Super Bowls. Listen it’s fun as hell to watch the offense light up the scoreboard but I think it’s so much better to watch the defense clobber and make the QBs run for their lives like back in the day mike vick and Aaron brooks were running and the way mahomie was as running that brings joy to me lol

  6. Bird Says:

Think about it. Most people thought the bucs offense was fine and needed to focus on defense in draft

Two big holes were pointed out as edge rusher And corner
Who are this big noise players on defense shining in camp?

Joe may or may not agree but it sounds like top 3 are devin white , joe tryon And ross cockrell. Whether cockrell is getting turnovers at safety or corner with 6 ints is the rumor…he is showing he belongs and may need to get more reps on the field on sundays

And tryon in the rotation with jpp and shaq
    Good night opposing offenses.

  7. Hodad Says:

The standard has been set by one of the best defenses ever. Lynch, another king pin of that defense just joined fellow mates in the HOF. They didn’t have Tom Brady however, and only won one S.B.. This group has a real chance at two more. Three years of dominance, and another championship would make them the best Buc defense ever.

  8. Joe Says:

devin white , joe tryon And ross cockrell.

Evans, Devin White and a toss-up between Mike Edwards and Cockrell.

  9. Bird Says:

    Sorry joes

I should have resaid in same sentence cause defense was focus of comments
    But top 3 defense standouts

Trust me …i know mike evans looks like he is balling

3 Special things can happen for the Bucs (if good health permits): first team to host/win Superbowl at home,: second team to win all of their games 20-0 (this year),: the first team to win 3 chips in a row….. it’s called the Brady/Bucs Plan (3yrs) 🤫

  11. Infomeplease Says:

#1bucfan, I agree with you 100%! Defense does win championships!! I’d hate to have to game plan against the flexibility of this defense. And the cherry 🍒 on the cake is a TB led offense who will average 32+ points per game! Let the season begin!!! GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. Tony Says:

Hopefully the area can build a dynasty of winning teams between the Bucs Lightning & Rays because the area deserves it after sucking for so long. Let everybody else suck. Getting old always watching everybody else win. Let them watch the area finally have success.

  14. Mike Says:

Having to go against Evans, Godwin, AB, Gronk, Brady, etc is big time helpful for the defense. Who else are you going to face that’s better in the NFL? Not too many, if any at all.

  15. Duane Says:

We saw the defense ascending more late last season. They had a ton of juice. They stop the run, and get after the QB. Now the secondary is making plays, and correct me if I am wrong, but were Brees and Mahomes last throws picked off by 45? We saw this team struggle to find a way to win games last year. I dont think that will the case this year, and I feel the defense is going to be the difference. As an opposing coach, the notion of your players on the field with Brady, versus on the field with 45 and that Dline, is daunting. Dallas is going to be the first to get it this year. Go Bucs!

  16. SlyPirate Says:

Yesterday in the 1-on-1s, Shaq, JPP, and Tryon got sacks. JPPx3!!!

    Shaq vs Wirfs
    JPP vs Marpet, Smith

The Bucs starting o-line is great. Our OLBs are greater.

This year’s Bucs could be legendary.

If that becomes the “norm” this D will be the best in Buc’s history. Yes that includes the great D that won our first SB. That defensive effort against the best QB and defending SB champs was just about perfect. If this year’s team can do THAT on a consistent basis they will be awesome!
