Next Step For Carlton Davis?

August 10th, 2021

Bucs CB Carlton Davis.

Boy, Carlton Davis has come a long way.

When he was a rookie with Mike Smith as a defensive coordinator, Davis looked about as lost as a priest in a Nevada house of ill repute.

Once he survived his rookie season, Davis has been getting better and better.

Now, per the research of Thomas Bassinger, typing for the Football Outsiders 2021 Almanac, Davis may be among the best corners in the game.

🏈 Aside from that first game against the Chiefs, the Buccaneers clamped down on the deep ball. … Most of that [secondary] improvement [which began in 2019] came against deep passes down the right, which is usually Carlton Davis’ side of the field.

Joe believes Davis’ first true excellent game came late in the 2019 season when he took out DeAndre Hopkins, then of the Texans, in that Saturday afternoon game on NFL Network.

For some reason — Joe will find out someday — the Bucs’ secondary, specifically Davis, turned the corner when serial loafer Vernon Hargreaves was thrown off the pirate ship.

Without any inside knowledge (yet), Joe can only guess Bucs defensive backs were shading towards Hargreaves to help him out but in the process stretched themselves too thin which allowed opponents to exploit them.

And the steady improvement by Davis is perfect timing. He’s in a contract year this season.

He needs to do The Carlton dance after a great play

Tough to say how we keep all these guys to keep this thing going. If Suh and/or JPP dont come back, that’s a good chunk of cap space. Possibly restructure Jensen or replace him with the new guy in training…..that frees up a bit more. Throw in Brown takes off for a pay day somewhere, maybe we free up enough to keep Godwin and Davis. Its a bit of a balancing act because short term you want to keep the team positioned for Brady but if/when Trask takes over, a stingy defense will help a young QB a ton.

Davis never had elite speed and was a bit grabby to make up for this but man, Davis has risen to be a true lockdown CB. Kind of reminds me of Ronde Barber. He too had good but not elite speed yet he was one of the best in the league.
