Todd Bowles: Baker Mayfield Unlikely To Play Against Jets

August 11th, 2026

“Ira, I may get Friday off!”

If you are waiting with bated breath to tune in to the Bucs-Jets first worthless preseason game Friday night, you may be in for a surprise.

Don’t expect Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield to be taking any snaps.

That’s the word from Bucs coach Todd Bowles this morning from the Jets’ home in Florham Park, N.J. where the Bucs are in controlled scrimmages against the Jets this week.

Bowles told the assembled Fourth Estate the has no plans on playing Mayfield. Smart move.

For Joe, the keyword here is “plans.”

It also suggests that Mayfield likely has Zac Robinson’s offense down.

Why risk Mayfield (or any starters) in these nonsense games? Coaches always talk about how they get more out of these scrimmages than they do the worthless preseason games.

There’s no sense in Pearl Harboring your own season by having your franchise quarterback get lit up by camp meat trying to make a splash play. Just look what that did for Jalen McMillan in Pittsburgh last year.

Let undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels get the snaps — he far outshined Connor Bazelak today — unless the Bucs are trying to hide him in an effort to let him get through waivers next month and put him on the practice squad.

Backup Jake Browning got dinged up this morning and Bowles doesn’t have an update. So Browning’s planned start Friday is up in the air.

Unfortunate to hear about Browning. He was having a solid camp from all the reports i’ve read. He seems to have the deep ball accuracy on point.

When you can’t attack them on their talent, attack them personally, Marine bucs. What a joke. Like you know what went on. You haters never cease to amaze.

  8. chad Says:

marine buc might literally be mentally challenged. you want to attack baker for how he plays and what he does on the field, then that’s fine. there’s no reason to attack over personal issue off the field especially referring to something you have no information about what happened.
