Bucs Training Camp 2026 Day 6 Practice Notes

Luke Goedeke and Tristan Wirfs chat it up during a break in offensive line drills Tuesday night inside the Glazer Shed.
Fun night in the Glazer Shed for the Bucs’ annual night practice. What wasn’t fun was all the guys on the sidelines with injuries, though all minor.
Among the players watching from the sidelines were Chris Godwin, Tez Johnson (groin), Jalen McMillan (knee), Emeka Egbuka (sore lower body), Tristan Wirfs (hamstring), Benjamin Morrison (hamstring) and Vita Vea (contract back).
Because of all the wide receivers on the sidelines, rookie Ted Hurst got a lot of reps with the first team. So long as he is healthy, Joe isn’t worried about Hurst.
The practice marked the third-straight practice in the Glazer Shed. The first two were moved indoors due to lightning and heavy rain. Tonight’s practice had been scheduled for Tuesday evening for some time.
* “Chewbacca” (backup tackle Benjamin Chukwuma) is going to have to start practice a little more focused. Tonight was the second practice where Joe saw that Chewbacca jumped offsides on the very first play of 11-on-11. Chewbacca was in for the hamstring-sidelined Wirfs.
* Mayfield fakes a handoff and fired to Ted Hurst down the left seam. Jacob Parrish had strong coverage. This Hurst may not be flashy like Antonio Brown or Mike Evans, but dang if he isn’t steady. Just makes catches time after time, day after day. He’s so consistent. Sort of like how Chris Godwin is so dependable but not flashy.
* Bucky Irving runs to the left.
* Hurst is blanketed by Ayden Garnes but still hauls in a pass from Mayfield down the right seam.
* Mayfield to Kenny Gainwell along the left sideline and it is dropped.
* Early on, Hurst is getting a lot of work and reps with the first team.
* Sean Tucker runs up right guard for a really physical run. It’s going to get more physical shortly.
* Tucker blows through the line up the middle and scores a touchdown, 60-70 yards.
* Josh Williams runs a slant, angled path to the left and gets a nice gain out of it.
* Gainwell up the middle. Defenders getting a little too physical with Gainwell and he’s not backing down. Giving it as well as he gets it.
* Mayfield fakes a handoff and connects with Cade Otton along the left sideline.
* Mayfield throws to the left sideline for Otton again, this time for about 20 yards. Bucs need to run more of this during the season, please.
* Jake Browning hits Eric Rivers in the hands over the middle and the ball skips through his hands right into the arms of Zyon McCollum. The Bucs corner couldn’t hang on but he did break up the pass. McCollum is having a decent camp. He had a decent camp last year, too, and look what happened.
* Mayfield throws deep down the left side to Dennis Houston, about 30-35 yards downfield. After Houston catches it, he houses it for six.
* Mayfield’s deep-ball accuracy is on tonight.
* Mayfield to Kameron Johnson for 10 to the right.
* Mayfield pumps, pumps and checks down to Otton to the left.
* Former West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene runs a crossing pattern from left to right and Mayfield hits him in the hands at midfield but Greene couldn’t hang on. Joe heard one heckler nearby holler, “C’mon!”
* Browning is “sacked.” Lots of defenders around him. Browning tried to throw the ball away. No dice.
* Mayfield pumps to the right and then throws a screen to the left for Payne Durham. The Purdue product got about 10 yards. Joe is sure that pleased Durham’s country singer fiancee Macy Kate, who attended tonight’s practice.
* Is the David Walker hype real? Maybe. Walker had at least his sixth “sack” of training camp. He’s had a “sack” every training camp practice so far. Oh, if this practice only allowed hitting the quarterback. Browning would have been snapped in half. Walker came in from Browning’s right, Browning’s frontside. Walker was perfectly squared up on Browning who was looking downfield. There was no one between Walker and Browning, who never tried to avoid Walker. Had hitting the quarterback been allowed, Walker would have absolutely rocked Browning’s world. Like those old 1970s highlights where you see a defensive end wipe out the quarterback so bad that his head hits the ground before his feet. Like a bowling ball snapping back a pin.
* Sweet pitch and catch: Mayfield airs it out for Kameron Johnson, who reached out and the pass hit him right in the hands near the right sideline in the end zone. Touchdown!
* Mayfield throws to Hurst for a touchdown to the left side. But hold up: If this were real football, Calijah Kancey would have had a sack. Kancey came racing in and Mayfield got rid of the ball after Kancey (purposely) ran past Mayfield. McCollum was in coverage.
* Rueben Bain is all over Browning for a “sack.” Browning, in an act of desperation, just launches a prayer to the end zone that is incomplete.
* Joe thinks he is in an alternate universe. Bucs pass rushers are out hunting tonight.
* Browning connects with Dean Patterson (Georgia Tech) for a touchdown.
* Bucky runs right.
* Bucky runs right and tries to reverse field and is stopped right away.
* FIGHT! First one is detailed here.
* Alex Anzalone tackles Gainwell near the right sideline and runs him out of bounds during the tackle. Joe didn’t have an issue with it but a zebra with an itchy trigger finger might just throw a flag in NFL chieftain Roger Goodell’s league. Anzalone is fired up and woofs and whoops and pumps his fist as he jobs back to the huddle.
* Tucker blasts up the middle, avoids a tackle and heads to the right sideline. Nice run.
* Chris Braswell (!) and Mohamed Kamara surround Mayfield. No play. “Sack?”
* Mayfield scrambles to the left for a touchdown.
* Awesome play: Mayfield rolls right and keeps running, and no one is open. Mayfield buys time for his receivers as he runs out of real estate along the right sideline, so he starts dropping back. He finds Bauer Sharp at the goal line down the right hashmarks as Sharp steps over the goal line for six. BUT NO! Luke Goedeke is flagged for holding.
* Jalon Daniels rifles a pass to Kamerson Johnson to the left. Very good catch by Johnson.
* Daniels to Green to the left side.
* Bad pass by Daniels. He rolls to his right and once he gets to the right sideline, he fires into a crowd along the sideline. Corner Ayden Garnes jumped over a receiver to pick Daniels and he houses it for a pick-six.
* There is a Devin Culp sighting! Mayfield throws to Culp short and to the left and he is hit right away.
* David Walker goes against Marshall Foerner of Minnesota State-Mankato, and Foerner is worked by Walker who blasts past him to the outside. Just as Walker blew past Foerner, the whistle is blown; play dead.
* Browning throws over the middle to Patterson.
* Daniels throws a beautiful back-shoulder fade to Greene along the right sideline. Green had his hands on the ball but couldn’t hang on.
And that was it for the Bucs’ night practice. The Bucs have Wednesday off. The next Bucs practice is Thursday morning.

Out of curiosity, haven’t seen anything written yet about how the interior DLine is doing without vea being in there. Who are they using at NT in his absence & how’s that looking?

I know it is practice but what gives. Seems like it his top 5 line gave up a bunch of sacks but it also seemed like a lot of touchdowns and big plays happened also.
I guess both offense and defense are works in progress.

Depends if we’re running an over/under front, but no 4-2-5 usually has our DTs in a 2/3 technique

Joe, thank you for the notes.
It’s good to read that Baker was throwing a little deeper and connecting. That’s been a bit of a concern so far, based on your previous notes.
Sean Tucker seemed to have a good practice, as well. He’s certainly made the most of his opportunities when he’s been on the field during the past couple of seasons. Shame he’s underutilized.
Bain and Walker? We may actually have a heck of an edge rush this year. I saw the video of Reuben faking Luke out. Luke is no slouch… nice moves by Reuben. And, if David makes the field and actually hits an opposing offensive player this year, it’s going to be mayhem. The guy hits like a freight train. The x-factor of course, is our head coach who doesn’t believe in an edge rush.

If you have players who can rush the QB on a consistant basis, doesn’t matter if you believe in Todd or not. It’s not always the Xs, and Os, it’s the Jimmys, and Joes. Bain, Walker, Mo, YaYa, can be relentless, pass rushers, scheme won’t matter. I’ll never be a Bowles guy, but it really comes down to the players. I like who we’ve added, think they will make a difference, we’ll soon see.

And my thing is this offense should be dominant against this defense. Especially the corners. But without Vita the defense doesn’t work. Hes not a cog, hes THE COG.

The only thing that can stop the “exotic” blitzes that have fooled Bowles and so called experts into thinking he’s a defensive “guru” is if the ” front” four can constantly and consistently put extreme pressure on the qb and the rest of that oline. Logic dictates🖖 if it does what it’s supposed to do don’t change it up and have linemen cover receivers, let them do what they’ve trained to do their whole careers. However knowing Bowles even if it’s doing it’s job he won’t be able to help himself and he’ll break the egg yolk and turn everything into scrambled eggs. Seen too much from him to have any faith he will leave well enough alone unless it comes down to calling a time out at the right time which he likes to leave alone. He must have a thing in his contract where he can trade them in for Bucs gear or bags of Kit Kats.
Hopefully what the offense is doing in camp will translate over to the season, after last year’s OC failure I don’t have a lot of faith in Robinson yet since Atl’s offense was hardly better than ours unless it faced the toilet bowl defense

Will be good to see these guys against another team soon. Then we can see whether the offensive line has taken a step back or the defensive line has taken a step forward.

I don’t think I’ve seen Al-Quadin Muhammad’s name yet in one of these reports. Is he showing up at all? Braswell is mentioned more.
