What’s a better bet: Benjamin Morrison staying healthy for eight consecutive weeks or Vita Vea getting traded by Sept. 1?
It seems Adam Schefter, the NFL super insider at ESPN, would wager on Vea getting dealt.
Schefter was very firm on his podcast that the Bucs-Vea money squabble is headed toward a breakup barring a change.
“I don’t think this situation is a peaceful one right now,” Schefter said.
“I think this one could develop into a Micah Parsons-like situation, a Khalil Mack-type situation, where the team doesn’t want to trade him, isn’t going to trade him, but he’s not getting him back on the practice field. And the longer it goes on, the more it recognizes the only choice it might have would be to trade him. But again, nothing now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if later this summer, something comes down like that and it develops in that way.”
Nine-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Khalil Mack was traded from the Raiders to the Bears on Sept. 1, 2018. All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons was traded from the Cowboys to the Packers last year on Aug. 28 — for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks. So that’s the timing to which Schefter is referring.
Vea won’t command the huge hauls Mack and Parsons brought in. But there should be enough interest in Vea for the Bucs to walk away with a second-round draft pick or a quality player that can help this season.

If the Bucs want to trade Vea they would be wise to wait a little longer.
If there is a true contender who suffers an injury on their D-line Vea’s value will continue to rise as the preseason continues…
If we can’t get a 2nd rounder for him then the Bucs can just keep him and Vea will play but not until @ week 7.

Remember to he was a captain on a loafing and allergic to contact defense (sans a few like Tykee, YaYa, etc.), the run defense wasnât even that great last season w/ Vea and the dude only plays 2/3rds of the snaps at best

My life now revolves around gratitude! I realize how lucky I’ve been. It disturbs me when I see all the ingratitude that is corrupting our nation.
Not to pick on NFL players, why should the owners get it all. But these stories and I realize they’re a part of the game get on my nerves big time.
We’re talking about multi millionaires earning more MILLIONS no matter how it turns out. I’m tired of all of this. Why can’t the players just honor their contracts?
I get that Vita is a different story. He’s scheduled to earn 17-18 million with bonuses just this season. But he doesn’t have any guaranteed money left and I’m sure that irks him.
For some perspective however, in addition to the 17-18 million this season he has already earned over 50 million from the Bucs! This is purely about ego and respect, I get the latter but damn I feel sorry for any human that has 50 million and isn’t just overwhelmed with gratitude. 17 million is more than fair.

I admit, I don’t understand this seems easy. He has eared the money hands down. This defense really needs him this year. Giving him some more money he deserves and extend him a year or so?, Why not. The Bucs should be ashamed of themselves. I also don’t get all the hate for Vea. He has been a great player for the Bucs. Like I said if the Bucs are serious about this year they would have signed him and Baker too. It tells me the team does not think it can win. That I see clearly.

Bucs would be wise to wait unless a phenomenal offer comes forth. By waiting you may see a team that is a contender lose their NT to injury during garbage season and then the ask for VV goes way up.
Personally I sure pray that the Bucs sign VV as most people here do not understand just how very good VV is.

LUVMyBucs, people just donât understand. His impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. And I made the point on another post, that aside from his dominance in the run game, youâd be hard pressed to find a NT/Man of his size in NFL history that has amassed as many sacks. He had more than Vince Wilfork, Ngata and Has 5 more Sacks than Dexter Lawrence (in only 3 more games played) who many consider the âbestâ.

Look at the tape from the last two Lombardi runs and tell me D-line depth is a luxury. You want to be a champion? Youâd better be able to go eight or nine deep up frontâbecause thatâs how you stack titles.
Philly showed everybody the blueprint in 2025. They rolled fresh bodies along that front all game long. By the fourth quarter, opposing offensive lines were gassedâand them boys were still running amok. Thatâs how you construct a defensive line: create havoc, keep legs fresh, and wear people down over the long haul.
Then SeattleâSEATTLEâtook that blueprint and ran the league with it. And hereâs the part I love: nobody had them. NOBODY! Vegas set their win total at 8.5, hung +6000 odds on them, and dismissed them as an afterthought. Then they went 14â3 and took everybodyâs lunch.
Thatâs the thesis right there: build a defensive front with a legitimate rotation, and you control the line of scrimmage. You choke off the run, live in the backfield, and hunt the quarterback without gambling the house on the blitz.

Smart teams dont give huge contracts to aging players at the end of their careers unless it’s to win a superbowl this year.
Love Vita and what he’s done as a Buc. But JL is doing the right thing for the team. He has his QB looking for a new deal and depending on how this season goes, that’s much more important than an aging NT who’s decline is coming.
If Vita truly won’t play under his current contract, then trading him for a CB or a 2nd round pick makes a lot of sense.

First off…those saying we should pay him should understand…the Bucs are broke. They do not have the money to pay him. He knows that. That’s why he waited to bring it up.
Second, the Bucs need to be wary of the message sent to the rest of the team. Keep him around, and he could become a locker room cancer…but trading him lets the other players know his tactics work.
The Bucs will need to make a proper example of him so the other players know not to pull this stuff.
So…appear to give him his way. Trade him. But make him regret it. Trade him to a team that is absolutely horrible…a loser team with a loser front office. An organization that is badly run.
That way he appears to get what he wants at first, but in truth his career will playout with nothing but regret.
Or…you keep him and he becomes a locker room cancer… deactivate him. Set an example.
A second round pick is worth next to nothing when compared to precident.

Great research using only one stat, but need to consider # of attempts, yds/rush, etc. because TB annually is also high in fewest attempts against because the rest of the defensive scheme is so poor teams choose to pass at will. For reference, as you say we were 5th in rushing yds allowed last year, but also 20th in yds per attempt & 17th in TD’s allowed. Much more to the picture than simply yds allowed rankings.

Since the Super Bowl, weâve been rebuilding on the fly: eating $80 million in dead cap, reconstructing the offensive line, and retooling the receiving corps. Resources were stretched thin, and the defense quietly paid the bill.
Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting, Mike Edwards, and now Jamel Dean all walked. Licht responded with a fifth-round pick in 2022 and a third-rounder in 2024 before finally returning to meaningful Day 2 investment with Morrison and Parrish in 2025.
Thatâs a four-year gap at a position bleeding talent.
At linebacker, Devin White regressed and left. Then Lavonte Davidâthe heartbeat of this defense for 14 seasons and 1,714 tacklesâretired without an heir apparent.
* No first-round successor.
* No second-round successor.
* No real succession plan.
Then thereâs edge.
Jason Licht has admitted the Bucs have been better at signing and trading for pass rushers than drafting and developing them. So this damn sure ainât just a Bowles problem. It looks more like a personnel problem thatâs been festering for years.
You canât keep stripping premium talent from a defense, replacing it with fifth-round projects and temporary patches, then blame the scheme when it no longer looks championship-caliber.

Fred makes a valid point that doesn’t get mentioned enough. We just look at big 50 and think he’s great. And he has been most of his career here. But there comes a time when that decline in play starts to hit. Can Vita still play THIS year at a high level? I think so. But beyond this year going into your mid 30s for a big NT, not many play well at that stage.
Also, you have a yound, talented DT in Kancey that will also be a FA next year. Sure he needs to stay healthy and have a good season, but if that does happen then you have to pay Kancey and find another big man to play NT

People chase gaudy sack totals and miss what that man actually does. A nose tackleâs job isnât to stuff the box scoreâitâs to eat two blockers so somebody else gets a clean run at the quarterback. Every double-team Vea commands creates opportunities for the edge rushers and keeps linebackers clean.
That production shows up on everybody elseâs stat line. Thatâs the Vita Vea tax nobody talks about.
And despite carrying all that dirty work, he still gets home himself. Wilfork and Ngata were built like small buildings, yet Vea has already surpassed both as a pass rusher. Men his size are supposed to be anchorsânot hunters.
Vea is both.
He can control the middle, swallow blockers, and collapse the pocket from the insideâthe hardest place on the field to generate pressure.

But you may have answered part of it yourself. Howie Roseman just made Jordan Davis the highest-paid nose tackle and Jalen Carter the highest-paid defensive tackle because dominant interior linemen are difficult to replace.
Maybe Vea is simply looking around the league, seeing how the position is being valued, and wants comparable security entering the final year of his deal.
The San Jose connection is interesting, especially considering he played high-school ball roughly six miles from Leviâs Stadium.

Not sure what the demands are but if he doesnt fit into plans, need to trade him now before the price to acquire goes down. Bucs can’t afford to screw this one up. Bad look for the franchise and Glazers. Baker could be next if they dont handle this the right way. Staying put does nothing and only makes it worse either sign him to a new deal or trade him.

But if teams consistently choose not to run against Tampa Bay, wouldnât that also say something about how they view Vita Vea and the interior of this defense? You canât dismiss the low rushing totals because opponents avoided the run without asking why they avoided it.
And weâre not talking about one season. Weâre talking about seven years, multiple secondaries, different linebackers and constant personnel turnoverâyet Tampa finished top five against the run six times.
Vita remained the constant.
But Iâm open to your argument: So which metric do you believe best isolates Vitaâs individual impactâand what does it show when heâs on the field versus when heâs off it?

So far Vea has made $64.38M… He probably wants more cash (who doesn’t) but at this juncture is “cash” the only factor?
If he plays out his current deal his earnings would be @ $94.38M.
So again – I ask “is cash paramount” here?
I have lived both in the SF Bay area and in the Tampa Bay area and can tell you there is a significant cultural difference between the two regions…
Plus – Vea might have other (aging) family members back West that he might want to be near.
Plus – Vea might look at Tampa as a sinking ship (like ME13 did) and he may want to spend his final 2 seasons battling for a SB ring rather than acting as an usher at a “FUNERAL” for a doomed franchise.
Maybe Vea knows something we don’t?
Maybe Vea knows Todd Bowles is a “dead coach walking”…

We do know Vita has requested a trade if Tampa wonât extend him. Thatâs the sticking point. It points first toward long-term securityânot necessarily dissatisfaction with Tampa, its culture, Bowles or the direction of the franchise.
At this stage, itâs likely less about cash and more about securing the final major contract of his career before one injury changes everything.
Could family, geography or chasing another ring influence where heâd prefer to go? No doubt. But has Vita said anything indicating those factors are driving the request?
Because so far, the only motive supported by what we actually know is pretty straightforward: Extend me, or trade me somewhere that will.

The problem being, he went about it the wrong way, and has now put himself in jeopardy of pulling a âREDDICK.â While, potentially burning some bridges and opening some eyes, in the process. He shouldâve requested a trade âbehind closed doorsâ like a MAN, and during the very beginning of the league new year. When, there were A LOT MORE potential landing spots âavailableâ for both, HIM and the BUCS to have worked with. I wouldn’t trade him . Let him rest and if he chooses not to play that’s money he loses.
Franchise tag and trade him next year.

BTW I do not agree or disagree with those who want to see Vita paid.
I just wish in these kind of discussions we could stop with the “millions” that’s irrelevant. All of this revolves around one thing. % of the cap!!!
The millions are not the problem! The cap is the issue. If you believe Vita is worth that share of cap space that’s cool, if you don’t I’m cool with that as well.
This is not about MILLIONS of dollars it’s about cap share and how much you can commit to an individual, a position, or a group. Should the DL earn a larger SHARE than the OL…are QB’s always worth the share they earn…a mistake at that position can wreck a franchise for more than just a season.
