T.J. Watt Appreciation Meant The World To Kenny Gainwell

August 6th, 2026

Joe’s been enjoying the player interviews by new Buccaneers radio voice Tony Castricone on the official team website.

In today’s edition, he caught up to running back Kenny Gainwell.

Gainwell has been as advertised since arriving as a coveted free agent running back from the Steelers. Heck, Gainwell said half the NFL was chasing him in free agency — and that explains his $7 million-per-year deal through 2027.

Joe loves how Gainwell hasn’t been banged up through the spring and early in training camp. He almost seems like the perfect veteran addition.

There’s been a fast bond with Bucky Irving and Gainwell is grateful for all things Tampa. “I’m loving the heat,” said the Mississippi native.

Gainwell shared again how much he still cherishes being named Steelers MVP for last season. In Pittsburgh, that’s an award that matters. The team votes on it and it’s been tracked since the tradition began in 1969.

“Oh, man, it means a lot,” Gainwell said. “You know, it’s coming from especially a guy like T.J. Watt who’s been getting that [award’ for the past five years.”

Watt had won the honor in five of the prior six seasons. He played 14 games last season but the honor went to Gainwell.

Gainwell believes he won the accolade not only because of production. Very hard work and being a guy who does small things on the field are what Gainwell says made him MVP. “I’m excited to bring that attitude here [to Tampa,]” Gainwell said.

The veteran is confident he and Irving can help carry the team because of the chemsitry that’s building.

“Being on one page with Baker, you know that thing will take us a long way,” Gainwell said.
