Bucs Get Respect From League Insider

March 21st, 2024

Finally, someone.

Joe can tell it irks Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht the way #NFLMedia often shat on the Bucs every year unless Tom Brady was on the roster.

That came in the form of ignored or overlooked players (Mike Evans for years, Lavonte David forever) or the team simply dismissed as a loser franchise in a loser division (Bucs without Brady = fail).

But Licht’s frustration is with those supposedly armed with tons of information and expected to be objective, and those aren’t football people. Matt Lombardo of “Between the Hashmarks” has an example of an NFL executive that very much respects what Licht and the Bucs strive for and have accomplished.

Lombardo, a long-time NFC East beat guy who at different times covered the Giants and Eagles, typed a story where he used unnamed sources to offer their takes about the best moves made in free agency.

This unnamed suit cited a pair of Licht moves early in free agency as the best transaction of free agency.

NFL Personnel Executive

“The Buccaneers keeping Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield together.”

That’s an interesting outlook. It wasn’t that Licht re-signed Mike Evans. It wasn’t that Licht re-signed Baker Mayfield. It was that he got both.

Apparently, folks who make a living in the NFL think Mayfield and Evans are a dangerous combination. In their only season together, they sure looked the part.

of course the competition loves the move RFLMAO

I think Baker will keep improving. He already just gave Evans one of his best seasons I think it was wise to keep the band back together.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

A new category of stupid needs to be created for Boss. Words like tard, idiot and cretin are too complimentary.

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yep, Boss is a closet Saints fan.

  8. JimBobBuc Says:

Mike and Baker have a good relationship and it shows up on the field. Early in the year, and early in some games, they weren’t synced up on the long ball. I hope they put in some extra time on the long ball this camp. Hell, we might even score a Q1 touchdown this season!

Hey Joe, how about talking with some players about our offense in Q1, and our red zone offense.

One of the best organizations in Football currently. Same with Bolts and the Rays. This area has come along way with its professional sports teams. Championships will do that. Truly one of the best cities in the United States to be living at this time and nobody even talks about it best kept secret in the country Tampa Bay.

  14. David Says:

He has been great. SB, Division titles, playoffs…. now last year needs to improve. So far the DBs have. The OLine may have, but not enough yet.

Still need another Edge rusher and LB.
Who is the 4th WR? Thompkins? Jarrett? Not sure about either

  15. Obvious Says:

Through the years we have been disrespected because we continued to hire the bad news bears “head office” and in return those geniuses hired and drafted some real dozzies. Whether that be a long list of bad gm’s, bad coaches, and dozens of bad draft picks. It’s probably fair to say that the first owner wasn’t very well liked among his own peers either.

Well, with the hire of one in particular GM, ALL OF THAT HAS CHANGED!

God knows it’s been a straight up fight for relevancy for years BUT the entire NFL is having a Very Hard Time ignoring us any further since this man Jason Licht has come along and DEDICATED himself and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Greatness.

Jason Licht is CLEARLY a Savy, Savy man and each year that this man is at the helm we grow stronger and stronger, with More and More RESPECT as each season the Bucs under his watchful eye grows Stronger and Stronger and we are No Longer just dismissed as an easy out. NOT HAPPENING ANYMORE!

Look, Baker and the ENTIRE TEAM was built from scratch last year. Many of the players were still here THANKS TO Jason Licht BUT we had No Structure and we STILL found a way to put it all together at the perfect time will others were falling apart. THAT SAYS SOMETHING! THAT SAYS THAT WE ARE FAR MORE DANGEROUS THIS YEAR THAN WE WERE LAST YEAR AND THE ENTIRE NFL KNOWS IT!

I’ve noticed that the Top Dogs in the industry are pointing that out and either the mutts or the puppies (analysist) are seeing the Top Dogs talking about the TRUTH and even the little guys are starting to figure out that, that structure isn’t coming from a couple of years with Brady. NO. That Structure is in the very backbone of the organization. It’s coming from Jason Licht! And if we’re lucky, he wants to keep doing it for another 10 years. And maybe even in a new kinda way, I’m seeing the making of a Dynasty. As long as Jason is around, we’ve got a REAL CHANCE at having what we’ve ALL dreamed of from GO.

Keep Swinging Jason. KEEP SWINGING! Because if Anybody gives us a chance at it, our GM DOES!

I like the moves but we are the exact same team as last year. When are the other teams free agents going to get here? The Falcons have improved tremendously. We had our hands full with them last and we are still the same team a year older

shhhhhh….stop with the common sense on here. they call you bad names.

  19. SB~LV Says:

lol… nowhere near the same team as last year.
The BIGGEST 1/3 of roster transition is still to come.
The draft and signing of released veterans post draft and before training camp
and then names from the final 53 roster cuts.
Plenty of new names by next September

  20. Duane in Sanford Says:

Signing the best WR and QB in the market is always the best move. Bonus points for already having them on your roster. This franchise didnt just bring back players it previously had. We moved on from unproductive players, and still have a draft to improve a roster held together by duct tape last season. The arrow is pointing up. Paper champions dont win the Super Bowl. Dawgs like Mike Evans and Lavonte David do.

  21. BUCman Says:

Love that he went and got Whitehead back! That was icing on top of the cake after Baker, Mike, Antoine, Chase, & Levonte.

Keep Swinging Jason. KEEP SWINGING! Because if Anybody gives us a chance at it, our GM DOES! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Doesn’t anyone use spell check?? I thought it was built in on most computers & phones now. The way this person has capitalized the first letter in so many words in the middle of sentences & spelled so many wrong reminds me of some handwritten letter from the 1700’s! I at least get the ALL CAPS everywhere. I usually don’t talk trash, but it is OBVIOUS Obvious & so many other people ignore their spell check which makes no sense, unless it’s wrong. Other than that I agree with what you said! LOL

  23. Haleywould Says:

@Obvious I sort of take it back about autocorrect. In the next (?) article about Baker I commented how stupid it was for @Capt.Tim to say Trask wasn’t a “Real Man” because he didn’t drink Tequila, or drink, yet my beloved autocorrect changed Trask to “Trash”! I actually hate autocorrect and constantly talk TRASH about it.. Not sure how I forgot that.

  24. LongSeason Says:

As for Brady. The Buccaneers landed that Brady Fish because of Jason Licht and the talent he put together. The team, that talent, is what made Brady Fish bite the hook. And that sure did work out great.
2020 Wildcard at 11-5 Post season 4-0 Super Bowl LV Champs
2021 NFC South Champ Post season 1-1
2022 NFC South Champ Post season 0-1
2023 NFC South Champ Post season 1-1
That’s three years with Brady and one with Baker making fish cakes out of Brady Fish leftovers.
People used to avoid Tampa in free agency. Then Licht came along. For many players, Tampa has been a great free agent destination choice and a lot of our guys want to come back because they know the fishing is good here.
That’s on Licht. Blame him. It’s his fault we are winning.
