Baker Mayfield Admits Hunger For More Playoff Wins

March 21st, 2024

Goal for 2024.

Shortly after he spoke with the local pen and mic club last week about his new contract with the Bucs, Mayfield gave another forum an idea of his mindset for the 2024 season.

Mayfield appeared on “Free Agent Frenzy” on NFL Network. There, Mayfield admitted his appetite was whetted by leading the Bucs to damn near the NFC title game.

But he’s not satisfied. In fact, Mayfield said he’s already setting the stage to help the Bucs make another yet longer run in the playoffs.

“A big reason why I signed here in the first place was the key pieces that have been here for Super Bowl runs and deep playoff runs,” Mayfield said. “Bringing Liam Coen in here who runs a similar system so young guys can continue to grow in that aspect.

“Once you have a little taste of the playoffs and you come up short — only one team is going to be happy in the end — but once you have that taste of it, you come back even hungrier knowing that we brought a lot of those key pieces back, it is an unbelievable feeling that we all get to work together again.

“We’ve been through the lows together. We’ve had some highs but we’ve been through the lows together and we want to fix that and to change that.”

It sort of surprised Joe to hear Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht say in a recent podcast that the key thing he learned about Mayfield last year was he was such a team leader and how his teammates were drawn to him.

The fact Mayfield is already talking about getting back in the lab and to push the Bucs even deeper into the playoffs may be an example of what Licht was talking about.

    Damn. Is It July yet?! Go Bucs!

  2. Conner50 Says:

    If baker plays more consistent every week and don’t throw it straight to the linebacker in the middle of the field we should go deep into the playoffs.

  3. Show Me the TDs Says:

    That’s one if the dumbest takes I have ever read. If he doesn’t want to win, then why the he!! would he be here. Kind of goes without saying…unless you don’t have anything else to write about.

  4. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

    Well, it is late March. Too late for free agency news, too soon for draft talk. I don’t envy Joe having to come up with material 10 out of the next 12 weeks.

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

    Count me in the small minority that believes the Bucs have found their QB for the next several years and maybe beyond. Such a relief that the Bucs don’t have to go QB shopping for a long while.

  6. Pewter Power Says:

    Hello you play to win the game

  7. Bucben61 Says:

    I second that Lt. Dan…..go bucs!!!!!!!

    Conner 50…how many times did that happen…you guys are insane

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Mayfield signed w Bucs because J Licht is a top 5 NFL GM

  9. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    Fortify the OL and get us a bruising RB – and we should be good to go on offense. Let’s Bake!

  10. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    First you shake it and then you bake it. Shake and Bake!

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

    I dunno how you can live in Tampa and not be a shake n bake fan at this point. LFG

  12. Gerald Says:

    Of course Baker wants to win. That’s his M.O. That’s why he won me over as a fan. He’s was a rich kid but didnt use daddies money but chose to walk on at 2 Universities and EARN his job with dedication and hard wrk and win a Heisman Trophy. Baker is the exception to the rule. Most Qbs get their money and loose their hunger for the game. For Baker it’s never been about the money. It’s always been about winning or Baker and that is not a given in this age.

  13. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
    How many times was he inconsistent or throw right to the linebacker like a bonehead? Because he was inconsistent all year long. Second he did it in the biggest game of the season with one drive left to come back in the playoffs, so which is the worst time to force something that’s not there. I’m not insane I’m just saying if he don’t do things like that we go deeper in the playoffs, don’t get your panties in a wad because I’m not afraid to criticize my qb at times.

  14. Bucben61 Says:

    Corner 50 nothing personal but you sound like a dumbass…

  15. Boss Says:

    at least he finally wants to win this year

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

    Connor’s love for trask is about to end in tragedy. Trask will be 3rd string this.
    As soon as his rookie contract is up, CHOP!

    Do you think Connor will sit outside Trask’s insurance office, pining for him?
    Makes me feel kinda bad for Kyle. The price of celebrity. It draws out all the creeps to you! Brrrrr!

    ======================================
    Glad you didn’t get personal. We should take up a collection and get some of these guys back on their medication.

  18. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Baker + Bucs = SUPER BOWL!!

  19. LANshark Says:

    Conner50: Go back and look at the film please. Ott was clearly in the wrong place. Baker should not have thrown the ball probably, but you do have to rely on your receivers to run the patterns correctly.

  20. stpetebucfan Says:

    The back end of the Bucs defense is now very physical, starting obviously with Whitehead and Winfield but Zyon is also a big hitter! LVD is back..Vea to stuff the middle…if the rookies improve at all this D could be formidable, and PHYSICAL!

    Perhaps the right draft pick or FA on the OL will complete their conversion to physicality. The right side is already mean.

    Then a BIG bruising RB to complement White..somebody like Braelon Allen and the Bucs start looking like a complete team with two great kickers to augment Special teams.

    Hard to hang with #TeamNegative.

  21. JimBobBuc Says:

    Draft IOL, pass rush, and RB1.

  22. Buc4evr Says:

    Fix the O line and fix the D line.

    These guys shouldn’t be starters:
    JTS
    Hall
    Hainsey
    Mauch.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Bucben61 <—always triggered easily.

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

    Starters lost- replaced
    Shaq- 0
    Stennie/Feiler- 0
    Ryan Jensen- 0 (Hainsey is a back up)
    Devon White(as a Pass rusher)- 0 Britt is a much better Lber, EXCEPT as a Pass rusher

    Carleton Davis- Zyon McCollum. Yeah. Im good with this one

    Added Starter- Jordan Whitehead

    We cut and replaced our O line depth. Good. We did not sign a new starter
    We cut and replaced our depth at CB. Good. We already had Davis replacement in
    house

    We still need 3 starters we lost. Rush LBer, Guard, Center
    These 3 will be critical to our upcoming season.

  25. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
    Oh nothing personal? But you’re big mad cause I said he shouldn’t force something that’s not there. Lmao sensitive little guy aren’t ya

  26. Conner50 Says:

    @Capt.Tim
    So lemme get this straight I point out a flaw that got us beat in the playoffs by our qb so that makes me a second string trask lover? Lmao you really got me good lemme tell you. You guys on here get so triggered I love it

  27. Conner50 Says:

    @LANshark
    I’ve seen the play or tape plenty of times, don’t make excuses. Baker simply should not have thrown it to Otton at all. He could have just threw it away and lived another down. It’s a done deal doesn’t matter anymore but he forced it and it cost us. Simple as that

    What makes this site Great is the insightful information and reasoned, intelligent debate between posters. It is a positive thing to rebut someone’s viewpoint on here. However, to resort to name-calling as a rebuttal does not provide anything of value to this thread and is actually a pretty low class move. Please provide value to this site so that others will be interested in your viewpoint. You’re better than this. Show us what you got without the name-calling please.

  29. Conner50 Says:

    @Brandon Jeff
    When someone is wrong or cant back up their statements with logic they usually go to name calling. It’s alright he will mature one day probably

  30. Conner50 Says:

    @Capt.Tim
    Also it’s CONNER not Connor with an O, can’t read or what?

  31. UKBuccaneer Says:

    Don’t mind me, guys. Just searching for a QB who hasn’t thrown a pick with the game on the line. I may be some time.

  32. Bucben61 Says:

    There is no reasoning with people like conner50…he’s seen it all and done it all…just another baker hater with a football iq near zero

  33. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

    You know what qb hasn’t thrown an INT with an NFL game on the line?

    Kyle Trask!!!

    LOL, sorry, couldn’t help myself

  34. Bucben61 Says:

    And Connor 50 I wasn’t calling you names…just stating the obvious

  35. Bucben61 Says:

    Tom Bradys last pass foe the Payriots was a pick 6…sorry ass bum…lol

  36. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
    No reasoning with me when I’m stating facts about why we got beat in the playoffs yea you got that one thing right. Also I’m not a Baler hater I like him just fine, just don’t live in fantasy land like most of you thinking he’s elite enough to win super bowls every year. Nah you was definitely calling names when I was just stating something he could imo his game about in the playoffs.

  37. Conner50 Says:

    Improve*

  38. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

    They could win a bowl with Baker because he’s smart. Brady and Manning weren’t athletic specimens, they were smart and knew where the holes in the defense were before the snap.

  39. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

    Ha mod squad Joe don’t like dissidents against Baker

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

    Geez Connor, relax.

    No reason to get so excited. Not knowing anything about football doesnt make you a bad person!

    Now, that weird ginger obsession with Kyle Trask is a different story . . .

    And thats MISTER Capt. Tim to you. You havent been posting here long enough to call me by my first name!

  41. Bucben61 Says:

    Psst….word on the street is no QBs will be taken in the first round of this years draft….all of them have thrown interceptions in awkward times in a game

  42. Bucben61 Says:

    And for what it’s worth hasn’t it been acknowledged that Otton didn’t get to his spot for whatever reason

  43. Conner50 Says:

    Capt.tim with the terrible comments and aggression

    You say idk anything about football but said Baker took us to the nfc championship game single handed. Enough said right there about your football intelligence

  44. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
    Otton wasn’t in his right position? Lmao whatever helps you sleep at night

  45. Bucben61 Says:

    ConnOr 50…so who should be starting QB for the 2024 bucs…who would you be starting

  46. Conner50 Says:

    @Bucben61
    Baker Mayfield considering the contract extension and money he’s gonna be paid out and because he can play really good. Never said that he’s trash and shouldn’t be the starter, said that he was inconsistent this previous year and he needs to take care of the ball better in postseason. You guys take things out of context and get defensive about some comments

  47. Bucben61 Says:

    Baker Mayfield has a passer rating of 100.4 with 1,153 yards, 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 4 games in the playoffs in his career.

    Yeah I can see he needs to get better in the playoffs

  48. Conner50 Says:

    Yea he still needs to get better if he wants to win more playoff games you can’t go far when you throw a crucial pick with the game on the line. I mean it’s pretty common sense

  49. Richard Says:

    I’m a Buc fan since 1976, old guy here. Mayfield is scrappy and certainly tries hard. He’s also very inconsistent, this website had a podcast talking of benching him midseason. Mayfield benefited from playing in a terribly weak division. If he wants to taste the playoffs again, he needs to step up his game and lead this team. If the Falcons or another conference team steps up their play, there’s a good chance the Bucs don’t win the division. If the Bucs played in any other division in the NFL, they wouldn’t sniff the playoffs.

  50. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

    Conner50 Baker fanboos have female tendencies, their claws come out for anybody who doesn’t say all good things about Baker. Logic doesn’t factor in with these people as well as facts, only facts according to them and their agenda

  51. Don'tBmad Says:

    Shaking my head when I see all the clown comments by half ass casual Buc fans. Doesn’t matter if you’ve been a fan for 30 years, if you don’t know the game, you still sound and look stupid AF. It’s obvious a lot of you have no real life and never met any expectations

  52. Esteban85 Says:

    I like having Baker and I think he’s a stud but yeah I would’ve like him to not throw that last pass in the divisional playoff game. Both can be true fellas

  53. Conner50 Says:

    Esteban85
    Exactly, all I was saying

  54. bill Says:

    Iam reading and i am amazed at connor50 observations that a guy at Qb WHO WOULD THROW AN INTERCEPTION on the last offensive play of a playoff game
    is just LAME. I am wondering just how this team got to the place where they could lose a game on an interception. Who worked this miracle with such a bum behind center. ONLY one thing to say here Go! Bucs! Go! Baker!!!!

  55. LongSeason Says:

    Baker to other NFL teams. “You won’t like me when I’m hungry.”
    Stay hungry Baker.
