“You Get A Lot Of Away Fans”

February 12th, 2024

Joe found it interesting last week when Baker Mayfield said he knew little about the Bucs when he got to the team.

That seemed odd since the Bucs were an NFL glamour franchise through the prior three seasons with loads of playoff appeareances and prime time games. Plus, Mayfield has said many times that he had a relationship since 2018 with Todd Bowles, and his 2022 Panthers faced the Bucs. Was he not studying Bucs film in the quarterbacks room? Joe also knows Mayfield had prior interactions with Bucco Bruce Arians.

Anyway, that was only one takeaway Joe had of Mayfield’s sitdown with Pro Football Talk hosts Mike Florio and ex-Bucs quarterback Chris Simms.

Simms noted to Mayfield how Bucs fans are underrated when it comes to their passion. Mayfield agreed but added the stadium atmosphere at The Licht House isn’t always friendly.

“But it’s one of those cities that people want to travel to later in the year, so you get a lot of away fans,” Mayfield said in response to Simms’ Bucs-fan love.

Mayfield is a very passionate dude. And while Joe is sure Mayfield will be a Buccaneer in 2024 via the franchise tag or a long-term deal, Mayfield’s comment made Joe wonder for a moment if Mayfield would prefer a team with a consistent home-field advantage because of it’s crazed fan base.

That didn’t work out for him in Cleveland, so Mayfield should realize getting heckled by Lions fans in Tampa is a relatively insignificant piece of the puzzle.

This team has always played as good or better on the road……I think it fires them up to play against the crowd.

With ticket prices where they are, I can’t blame Buc ticket holders for wanting to recoup some of their investment.

So….sell those tickets to the highest price possible…..imagine all the Eagles fans paying for the playoff in Tampa this year.

  2. Boss Says:

A guy that has worked for literally 20% of the employers in an industry, knows the people who work for the employer and has worked for the competition…..

and he knew nothing of the bucs?

    that’s a bit odd.

  3. Big Red Says:

Tampa needs a dome stadium. Locals are smart enough to know it’s better to sit at home and watch the game. Swamp ass and swamp testicles is how you’ll smell by the time you get leave RJS.

Dewey … Try switching to a different browser. I use Apple machines, but their Safari browser seems to allow a lot of graphics like that (slows it down too).

Switched to using the Brave browser and most of that stuff pretty much disappeared (it’s supposedly much more restrictive on adds/graphics & that makes it load pages faster too). Been using it for about 2 years & I’m impressed so far.

That’s because 80% of the people here are from somewhere else.

@Rod Munch, so you are a native American? If not then you have no say in where other Americans can and can’t live. 50 United States. You are free to move about the country the same as the next guy.

  27. First Name Greatest Says:

Meh, it is what it is. When the visiting fans come, just win and they will be less inclined to come watch their team lose in person.

  28. Mort Says:

Yeah, the Tampa fan base sucks. I’ve been on that train for a long time too. Wish it was different, but a bunch of dispassionate softies who rather cheer teams from up north, or Midwest cities just keep not switching their fandom to the place they live. It’s an indictment on these people. Worst fan base in football. Full stop.

  29. JK Says:

Nothing matters……….Mayfield will be a Pittsburgh Steeler soon

  30. Dlavid Says:

Oh, please! Everybody knows that the population here are in Florida is completely made up of the eastern half the United States migrating to Florida as a preferred destination to live ! We will always have fans that root for the Buccaneers until their hometown team that they grew up supporting arrives. Then all bets are off!

Yes, I am. Now get off my lawn, whitey.

And where did your ancestors come from, let me guess sprouted up from the mud and the primordial soup (NOPE). Most likely came across the land bridge of North America and migrated south. So don’t think so-called native Americans have much more title to the land than anyone else, especially when they had no concept of titling the land.

  32. Marky Mark Says:

I think he stays focused on his current team.

  33. Marky Mark Says:

I lived in LA for 13 years and it is the same there. There often more Bears fans et. Than the Rams and chargers. Having no NFL for almost 20 years did not help. That does not happen To the Lakers however. 100% Laker fans.

  34. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

    Joe,

How come I am NOT getting a picture of two women kissing? I don’t its fair that Dewey gets all the glory. See what you can do.

Nor the wheel. Yes. When Columbus landed in 1492, the natives in the Americas had not yet invented the WHEEL, which had existed in the civilized world since many thousands of years before Christ.

I’m hearing Tomlin really like Fields. Justin will draw a lot more interest than Mayfield. Bears and Bucs could be the biggest donkey’s this season. One keeping and one not.

  37. unbelievable Says:

Yeah but that’s always been the case.

Professional sports teams in Florida have always had soft, fairweather fanbases due to:
    1. Soooo many transplants that live in FL
    2. Not fielding consistently competitive teams (outside of a few years for the Bucs and Lightning)

  38. infomeplease Says:

BM6 is right about a lot of opposing teams ‘ fans here. Sure who doesn’t want to escape the snow for Tampa? But it’s the ticket holders selling their seats that gets them here!

  39. JK Says:

    D Cone:

Mayfield is soooooo much better than Fields c’mon. I don’t understand why nothing is Justin’s fault…….and I’m a huge Buckeye fan. He’s kot an NFL QB1 , he’s just not

  40. Lakeland Steve Says:

I love going to games but I just can’t afford it anymore. Besides why do I want to drop $500 for a couple of tickets, parking, food and beverages just to sit in a stadium that feels like 120 degrees, fighting heat stroke when I can sit at home in 75 degree temps with a 70 inch television. Someone mentioned a dome or some type of partial roof to block out some of the sun. Obviously that probably means a new stadium which wouldn’t happen anytime soon. Unfortunately we live in an area with extreme temperatures and weather.

  41. Sue Says:

I saw his interview and was insulted. I am from the east, but came to Florida years ago. My 4 tickets cost $10K per year….. season ticket holder. Not cheap, and took some sacrifice, but I love the Bucs. To hear Baker complain about away fans, blah blah, was SUPREMELY ANNOYING.
HE’s a good guy, but has a big mouth. We love you Baker, but some the damn whining. You’ve been on 40 interviews in the last week; you had one good year. Guy needs to clamp up, show some more success.

That is actually not true. My people are very proud and we did have the wheel and used it for children toys – with working spoke and wheel systems, very very advanced. But what did we need wheels for when we could just make women carry everything?

We’ve had mutiple women on this site. A karen is not just a woman and from a cultural standpoint meme a Karen might even be a guy

Besides I aint buying you are even a woman . From your other postings its seems like more a David using a girl’s name.

  50. Zoocomics Says:

I realize we have a lot of transients and that there is an abundance of away fans that show up throughout the season, but our stadium experience at least in the months of Sep and at times in Oct isn’t great. The heat and rain aren’t a whole lot of fun, and it’s worse if this team doesn’t show up to play. At least the crow’s nest is gone but ticket prices are worse than they have ever been.

I know it wouldn’t fix everything, but I’d be curious to see what the uptick would be if we had a dome or pseudo cover like Miami, whether “some” season ticket holders would be less reluctant to give up their tickets.

  51. First Name Greatest Says:

It’s the same in Miami, Los Angeles, Arizona, Carolina, ATL, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, and heck even in Week 1 this year Pittsburgh was over run with 49er fans.

New Orleans was over run with Detroit fans this year. Winning deters opposing fans from coming in, just win and make it uncomfortable for those opposing fans.

Week 1 in 2022, Buc fans were all over Dallas after coming off a 13 win season with Brady being back
