Baker Mayfield Said Bucs Adopted Carlton Davis’ Call To Arms

February 12th, 2024

Rallying cry.

Last summer, tired of how virtually everyone in the NFL world predicted doom for the Bucs without Tom Brady and with Baker Mayfield, Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis got fed up.

Speaking to Tyler Dunne of GoLongTD.com, Davis vowed of the 2023 Bucs, “We’re going to wreck sh!t.”

Davis said this, in part, because he believed the Bucs had many key pieces from the 2020 Super Bowl champs and they ought to play better than many predicted.

Receiver Chris Godwin later agreed. Last week, Mayfield said as much as well as he talked to the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo heard on “Mad Dog Radio” on SiriusXM.

Russo mentioned how the Bucs in the playoffs were basically playing with house money as few expected them to beat the Eagles. Russo mentioned how the Detroit divisional playoff game was a “free game.”

Mayfield pushed back on that.

“I wouldn’t call it a ‘free game,'” Mayfield said. “We knew once we got into the playoffs we had a chance. That’s kind of the mentality that our locker room embraced.

“Alright, yeah, the NFC South didn’t have a great record but we knew if we got in there what pieces we had. We knew we could score points on offense. Our defense was going to have great games and could hold teams to low scores.

“We played a couple of those teams [Eagles, Lions, 49ers] before we really knew who we were. So we wanted to improve and peak at the right time to just get a chance in the playoffs.”

Russo admitted Mayfield was right and said in response, “Good point.”

And yeah, NFL teams are living organisms. How they play in September or October isn’t always how they play in December or even January.

Teams evolve. And health plays a factor. The Bucs were somewhat healthy in January.

So yeah, Davis was peeved last summer. And Mayfield admitted Davis wasn’t the only guy thinking the same thing late in the season.

Lions had us beat in the trenches in talent/depth. That to me was the biggest factor in the game.

    Great game last night.

  2. SlyPirate Says:

The defense has really lacked leadership since Suh and JPP departed. CDIII stepped into the role, but the team was hoping Devin would emerge. Something to watch for in the offseason is Licht to sign a strong veteran with leadership skills.

  3. Boss Says:

Lions had the niners beat too untila couple turnovers. If only we did not turn the ball over early in the lions game…..

but yeah, they kicked our butts in the trenches.

Speaking of DW45…wonder where he ends up? Wonder if he still has the same agent? What a blunder in the last off season. How many millions did DW45 lose with his prima donna attitude followed by mediocre production and eventual demotion?

  5. Rappin Reporter Says:

Great game last night and good to note both QBs were Big 12 signal callers. Baker was 2-1 against Purdy and Iowa State. Baker and Mahomes (Texas Tech) hold the NCAA record for most combined yards passing in a game (that Baker won)…

  6. Christopher Schiefen Says:

I think we have to give Todd some credit. The muscle pull injury woes were not a factor this year.

  7. zzbucs Says:

I am not a CDIII hater by any mean, but I do know that I am fed up with him as a player…..Doesn´t tackle, avoids contact, permanent injuries….I would love to trade him and get a pick, and release cap space……

  8. Jack Clark Says:

I like Mayfield as our quarterback for now. He just needs to get better at throwing deep balls to people other than Mike Evans. And hopefully our new OC will not waste first and second down running between the tackles so Baker Mayfield can have a better season next season than he did this season.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

Davis isn’t afraid of contact and isn’t a bad tacklier. Not the best but kinda average. As far as missing games due to injuries. He has started 76 out of 100 over his 6 seasons with the Bucs. No iron man but not always injured. I wish we had someone more physical and never injured but I don’t want to trade or cut him until we got someone better.

  10. BakerBucs Says:

Jack Clark says I am not sure I agree with that statement while he did have a run with over throwing long passes he surely looked the part later in the season some of them bombs were to good plus he had many drops that were sure eye catchers no joke!

  11. BakerBucs Says:

Where is David was he an imposter in drag under another name? Have u noticed alot of the hate speech has regressed to a mere whisper!

  12. teacherman777 Says:

if you wanted the Bucs to tank this season for the chance at a 1st round QB,

you can NEVER talk about football again.

    For real.

“Tanking” for a 1st round QB is the DUMBEST strategy in the NFL.

Players quit on coaches all the time.

Players make “career decisions” every game.

Players give 50% effort on many snaps when they don’t care about winning or their teammates.

    Like the Eagles.

Tanking DESTROYS the MENTALITY of the team!

We are the Bucs! We are Lavonte David’s team!

Since 2009, he has given his heart win, lose or blow out.

We Da Bucs! We are underdogs and outcasts! Fighters like Gholston!

    We will never tank!!!

Moreover, most 1st round QB are busts anyway!!!

  13. zzbucs Says:

    @Stanglassman

Though I respect your opinion, I just disgaree….Last 2 even 3 years CDIII is not the same player, I think he is a bad tackler and avoids contact every time he can….

  14. Student of the Game Says:

If the Bucs had a run game, they beat Detroit. There would be none of the blitz schemes they ran if the run was a real threat. Buc success in running was always because it was such a surprise they tried a run.

  15. MoeB Says:

Quit leaving in the past. Bad decisions and minimal outcomes. You can’t get rid of all your leadership Devin W is the man period. You guys downgraded him just because 😃😃

  16. White Tiger Says:

What can be upgraded within the constraints we have, is the interior o-line… ironically, those are relatively NOT high price tag positions (outside JPJ).

Think Carlton nailed it and the locker room bought in, that just played into Baker’s persona.

Window on those Super Bowl bets is closing, we drafted well last year, need to do the same again. Unfortunately, probably the most value at #26 is defense – either edge or DB.

Assuming we re-sign Baker, Mike & Antoine. If so, we still hold the keys to the NFC South.

  17. White Tiger Says:

*window on those Super Bowl VETS (not bets)… is closing.

  18. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Davis was trash all season long, when he was healthy and playing. Time to move on.
