Baker Mayfield And Patrick Mahomes

December 25th, 2023

Crazy numbers.

On this gloomy Christmas Day in the Tampa Bay area, Bucs fans are so giddy, you’d think the Florida sunshine is filling each and every room in their homes.

The Bucs are one win from the NFC South crown. One win! That’s what four straight wins in December will do for a team. And one big reason has been the play of Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.

With the Raiders and Chiefs about to kick off this afternoon, one could argue that on this Christmas, Mayfield has as good if not better numbers than the best quarterback in the league, Chiefs signal-caller Pat Mahomes.

Consider that Mayfield has 26 touchdown passes. Mahomes has 25. Mayfield has just six picks. Mahomes has 13.

And the Chiefs are paying Mahomes in the ballmark of $35 million more this season than the Bucs are paying for Mayfield.

Is it crazy to suggest Mayfield is having a better season than Mahomes? Maybe. What there is little doubt about is that the Bucs are getting a significantly better bargain with Mayfield than the Chiefs are getting currently with Mahomes.

kinda a slight difference in receiving talent tho lol

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

One has been to 3 SB and is already top 10 all time. Cherry pickin stats to go viral.

  3. Mark hardt Says:

They are different kinds of Quarterbacks so you can,t really compare them. However, their paths have been crossing since college. Baker left Texas Tech when Mahomes was recruited. They played 2x in college. Baker won both in shootouts. I believe Baker has lost 2x in the pros but fact check me.

  4. Gipper Says:

Cherry pickin stats? Those are the numbers, Dewey. Do you have some different ones? No doubt that Mahomes has played on stronger teams. Every QB would admit that you don’t get to SuperBowls without strong supporting casts. Remarkable that this year Tampa has 13 rookies and is clearly in rebuild mode. Just the same Baker has been solid. His numbers compare favorably to Stafford and Josh Allen.

  5. Wagonwheel50 Says:

    Interesting.

  6. Jack Clark Says:

Why is nobody talking about Eric Bieniemy leaving the Chiefs being the reason why Patrick Mahomes is performing AVERAGE AT BEST like Baker Mayfield? The conspiracy to discredit Eric Bieniemy and minimize his contributions to Kansas City’s offense success continues

  7. Gipper Says:

    Jack Clark,

You say it with such authority and certainty. Bieniemy is a good coach but neither Mahomes or Mayfield is AVERAGE. They are both elite NFL QB’s. Hope that Baker gets the $45Million a year/5 year deal from the Steelers and you get to keep scraping egg off your face.

  8. Let em Bake Says:

How much advertising will we see Baker in next year? The $ will offset any over- the- top offers teams might give him ( Pittsburgh). Tampa has too many positives to leave…

  9. SlyPirate Says:

OMG! F-ing joke, Joe. You compare Baker to TB12 and then Mahomes? Insulting. Done with this site if this BS is repeated w/o an MVP or Super Bowl.

  10. Chief Tbird Says:

Baker’s numbers are much better this season than people realize. If you blind tested Baker vs other top QB’s people would be surprised! If he can keep playing near this pace he will be a highly sought after QB. He will already get a contract next year in the $30-$35 million/year range. Possibly higher if he has a deep playoff run.

  11. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Gulper get out of here with your fanbois accounting. You got upset when one Joe put out that Baker is 0-4 when he throws more than 35 times this year because he’s cherry picking stats but now you say they’re the numbers because someone says cherry picking stats to put Baker in lesser light. Since when has Baker EVER been elite? His w/l record are numbers that speak for themselves, and before the Green Bay game he was far from elite. You fanbois are the worse you only point out his good but NEVER say anything about his bad always putting the blame on others. You are truly irritating like the estrogen filled rants you go on.

  12. Gofortheface30 Says:

Ohhhhh JEFFREY, this f’ing guy…No need to prequalify this as anything other than look at the numbers. No one talked about Mahomes receivers last yr when he won the Super Bowl. He still has Travis kelce does he not? Mahomes is supposed to be an all world talent. Now we’re making exceptions for him? Now we’re handicapping the argument? Pathetic. Amazing how people try to mold an argument to fit their own personal narrative or agenda.

  13. Gofortheface30 Says:

Jack Clark – another momo. Andy Reid has run that offense for 30yrs, ANDY REID called the plays. Btw, how’s bienemy doing with Washington?

  14. Jeffrey Becker Says:

gofortheface, how many picks weren’t his fault, how many TDs were lost due to drops, twelve more sacks, five more fumbles, and rushing yards? how good is mahomess with real wideouts?

  15. Capt.Tim Says:

    Ooooo.
    Sly pirate threatened to leave!
Who cares. One less whiny poster

  16. Jeffrey Becker Says:

gofortheface, don’t get me wrong tho, i love baker. and the chiefs offensive line is an absolute mess right now, can’t block anybody

    ^^^^
First of all, the washington commanders have MUCH LESS talent than the Chiefs did when Eric Bienemy was there, especially at QB. Yet in Eric Bienemy’s first year with the Washington Commanders, they are #8 in total passing yards, #15 in total passing touchdowns, #13 in rushing touchdowns. Imagine what he could do with a superstar QB? …oh wait.. he won two Superbowls with one 🤭

  18. Eric Says:

Man stop with the foolishness Joe would take Pat 100 out of 100 times over Baker! If Pat had the Bucs personnel he would be on his way back to a Super Bowl not barely hanging on to a 1game lead in the pathetic NFC South!

  19. Gipper Says:

    DavidBigBucsFan99,

    And Merry Christmas to you.

As I said Baker’s number’s are identical to Brady’s for first six years of their careers. You can read them for yourself on Pro Football Reference website. The assumption is if you can read. That might be a stretch. Ho, Ho, Ho Baker’s going to make a lot of dough and, well, you are going to just keep being you.

  20. Larrd Says:

I’d offer Baker 30 million for ten years right now.

Mahomes is played out. Made a move on Tay-tay and got de-balled, I bet. Like Samson.

    ^^^
If Baker Mayfield was an elite quarterback then he wouldn’t be getting paid minimum wage for a starting NFL QB

  22. Since76 Says:

Mahomes makes everyone around him better. Has consistent play every game and has less talent around him. Smith anyone. Mayfield has 3 good games this season. With better weapons. You pay Mayfield and we lose the talent the team needs to win and we will be stuck with a disaster for 3-4 years. What a crap show it will be. Let’s see if he puts together more than 2 good games in a row before we throw money out the window.

  23. Nate Says:

What is wrong with y’all ?? Nobody is saying he’s better than Mahomes.. Maybe having a better year ?? Yeah.. Really question you “fans” sometimes Lol..

  24. SlyPirate Says:

Capt Tim and Joe are Baker Man Lovers. Suck the sauce. Full facial. He’s better than TB12 and Mahomes. You toss that salad, boys.

  25. Gipper Says:

    Jack Clark,

A lot of mitigating factors with Baker and the Browns. I am sure you are paid what you are worth—$23,500/annum? Maybe more when Biden throws a few bones your way?

  26. WyomingJoe Says:

One thing is absolutely certain: BAKER DID BETTER COMMERCIALS than Mahomes!

  27. Trask To The Future Says:

BUCS SHOULD IMMEDIATELY PAY BAKER $75M/YEAR FOR 5 YEARS.

HE’S EARNED IT. NO ONE ELSE IN THE LEAGUE THROWS UNDER 100 YARDS IN MANY 1ST HALVES LIKE MAYFIELD. LET’S REWARD IT!

  28. Jonzee Says:

Social Media along with the Madden GM/QB screwed this dude only. All the negative click bait stories has costed thia dude millions.

  29. WyomingJoe Says:

Trask To The Future: Thank you for finally admitting that Baker is worth 75M/yr, but honestly, I think he’d settle for 60M. Don’t you?

  30. Mark hardt Says:

Baker can take less in Tampa and make it back in no state income tax and Acting revenue.

  31. Gipper Says:

    Wyoming Joe,

Gotta be nicer to the Baker haters. On Christmas day I hope they all got new drool buckets. The scariest part of these guys is they are allowed to vote in real elections. Terrifying.

  32. 1sparkybuc Says:

Our receiving corps is the difference. If Mahomes had our receivers Kansas City would be 12 and 3 or better right now.. Mayfield is solid. Mahomes is elite. Mahomes is still playing with the team that drafted him, and they won’t ever let him go. Mayfield still has a lot to prove. Our receivers and OC are key to his success. And our schedule has helped him too. If the Bucs had Mahomes, the Bucs would have four or five more wins than we do.

  33. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Sort of nice watching Mahomes and Kelce pout because the team isn’t loaded anymore. Makes this team overcoming adversity without whining look even better. $crew the Chiffies, go Bucs!

  34. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Mark hardt, you’re correct. Head to head in the pros Mahomes has always been on the winning team vs Baker. Joe Burrow has never won against Baker (as a starter, the Panters dropped Bake in vs the Bengals last year after they had 0 points and something like 40 yards in the first half). Pretty sure Baker is 0-fer vs Herbert too.

  35. Since76 Says:

Mahomes is like Brady was. He elevates play around him. Problem is mahomes salary is making the the team cut corners=losing good players due to the cap. Now mahomes is playing at a disadvantage with talent around him. Brady overcame it he seems to be struggling.

  36. Gipper Says:

    1sparkybuc Says:
    December 25th, 2023 at 5:34 pm

Ok, sparky, we get it Mayfield is OK because Tampa has good receivers and a good OC? You mean, Canales, the guy all the fan experts were bashing a couple of weeks ago? Like both Evans and Godwin and Otton think they have a better handle on Mayfield then all the experts who post here. They all seem pleased with Baker and they have a GOAT to compare him too. Statistically, Evans is having a sensational year. Would have been better with Trask no doubt?

  37. Danfan Says:

1sparkybuc, its pointless talking about hypotheticals where Bucs have Mahomes, this could never happen given there is a salary cap. Its the reason why Mahomes doesn’t have any decent WRs now, there is no way a Mahomes salary could fit in with Evans, Godwin, D White, Davis, Dean salaries

  38. Chuckys Bucs Says:

I see Chiefs fan aka swifties found this article

  39. Mike C Says:

It wasn’t Joe who put this comparison together sly, pull the stick out bro

  40. Defense Rules Says:

What the Chiefs are experiencing this year SHOULD be a lesson for every team in the NFL … what NOT to do.

Chiefs have the highest active payroll in the NFL at $195.3 mil. But the lion’s share is going to just 7 players:

1 – Patrick Mahomes: $37.1 mil CAP hit, $151.3 mil Dead CAP
2 – Chris Jones (DT): $26.8 mil CAP hit, $7.0 mil Dead CAP
3 – Travis Kelce (TE): $14.8 mil CAP hit, $14.2 mil Dead CAP
4 – Joe Thuney (G): $13.4 mil CAP hit, $35.3 mil Dead CAP
5 – Justin Reid (SS): $12.7 mil CAP hit, $16.2 mil Dead CAP
6 – Marques Valdes-Scantling (WR): $11.0 mil CAP hit, $12.7 mil Dead CAP
7 – Jawaan Taylor (RT): $5.8 mil CAP hit, $40.0 mil Dead CAP

So $121.6 mil of their $195.3 mil CAP hit (almost 2/3rds at 62.3%) goes to just 7 of their 53 players (plus several on IR). Just as bad, the Dead CAP for those 7 totals to $276.7 mil. And Mahomes is getting the lion’s share of that. QB salaries have gotten way out of hand IMO. A major injury happens (like what we had happen to Ryan Jensen) and the team could be in the pits for years.

Todd Bowles & Dave Canales have designed an offense that ISN’T dependent on having an elite QB. It does however depend on having a good OLine & decent running attack, and builds around the 2 stud WRs who we already had (Evans & Godwin), as well as around having a better-than-average defense. Paying big $$$ for a QB to run it will require compromising elsewhere (just like the Chiefs have had to do). The chickens are now coming home to roost?

I know you probably majored in English before you got kicked out of college but see if you can grasp the data. You have a lot invested in your Baker hate program so it is hard for you to let go. Shouldn’t be hard, I suspect you are accustomed to a lifetime of failure. I can explain it to you just can’t comprehend it for you. That’s always been a problem–right?

  43. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Mahomes is a cry baby. How dare those Refs throw a flag on a guy who was lined up offsides.

  44. Tbbucs3 Says:

Hey Slypirate, please dont go, we’ll all miss your terrible comments.

  45. orlbucfan Says:

$700M for some baseball player is nuts. It’s capitalism out of control. So, I see these triple M$$$ being pushed, I hate it. At least Licht gets it and he’s the GM. He and BM will do that talking when the season ends.

  46. Gipper Says:

The fundamental problem all these hate experts have is they have invested a lot in running down Baker. Now that they have been proven to be complete clowns it is hard for them to let go. Most of these cats have little or nothing going for them in the real world so they are happy to heap scorn on somebody they know nothing about. They just repeat a bunch of phoney copy from lazy media types who were all in the band in high school. Knowledgeable Cleveland sports fans know the real Mayfield story.

  47. Joe Says:

Todd Bowles & Dave Canales have designed an offense that ISN’T dependent on having an elite QB.

No owner with any common sense will run off a generational quarterback and not build around him. Do you realize how much cash Mahomes makes Clark Hunt? Hell, one reason Belicheat is supposedly on the hot seat is creepy Bob Kraft is still peeved Belicheat ran off Tom Brady — it cost Kraft maybe hundreds of millions.

Besides, only the willfully ignorant think you can win a Super Bowl with some two-bit quarterback.

The NFL ain’t 1970s high school football. No quarterback to take advantage of the offensive-friendly rules? No chance. It’s all about points.

  48. mg Says:

    GO BUCS

  49. Defense Rules Says:

The key word was ELITE (QB) Joe. Hurts isn’t elite. Jackson isn’t elite. Purdy isn’t elite. Yet the Eagles, Ravens & 49ers all sport pretty decent records in leading their divisions. They’re all QBs who can operate within their team’s system IMO.

  50. Beeej Says:

Mahomes is having problems because he makes too much money, which is why Cheetah no longer there

  51. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Mayfield has never been more will ever be better than Mahomes. Doesn’t matter the passing numbers or tds. Mahomes has 2 of 3 things we can only hope Baker can help us get and that’s a 3rd Super Bowl title. Only way I believe he can is if he keeps playing like he did in Green Bay. Baker is a baller and doesn’t give up and I like that. If he gets us to the divisional round then I would say he deserves a multi year deal. A plus of him leaving would be his fanbois go with him. They are irritating like hiccups and the females they are

  54. Buccos Says:

I haven’t watched the Chiefs play but I am quite certain that Durable Donny isn’t helping Mahomes numbers this year either. Mayfield wouldn’t have the best numbers of his career without Wirfs at LT. It’s too bad we didn’t make that move a year earlier for Tommy Boy’s final season

We all have buddies who are married to some real battle axes who have beaten them into a shell of their former self.

These Baker fans are like those Karen type wives who love brow beating and reminding their husband every chance that they can get about how right they were and how wrong their husband is.

They are the type of people who and your friend who’s married to her are happy to get away from as you escape to the garage for some Bug Storm beers with your poor friend so you can give him a respite from her.

  59. RGA Says:

Mayfield has played two 60 minute great games in a row, the previous 13 games were sketchy with some down right terrible when he passed for less then 50 yards in a half and finished with a completion percentage in the 40th percentile.
He’s bounced around the league and on his 4th team in less than two years where he has disappointed, the lowly Panthers cut him mid season.
The last two games were great, he needs to be consistent for a while for me to be a believer. I hope he does.

Tony, WTF are you even talking about? I gave Mayfield his props, he’s played exceptionally well for two games in a row. If I’m the GM or ownership I want to see more consistency before I sign him to a long term lucrative contract. Quite frankly he’s been terribly inconsistent and has bounced around due poor play. Two games don’t make a career, I hope he can keep it going.

  67. Tony marks Says:

One thing amusing about al these Mahome apologists in comments. They are actually trying to float the QB has to be part of a team and its the TEAM that alows the QB to win and be better.

    Well well well imagine that

Heads I win tails You lose

We startedout this season with NADA but Evans and Godwin and then we took Godwin out of his productive slot. Otton was garbage and had T-rex arms, WHite was charging up the middle for minus one gains with little passing targets. We had no Moore in the mix.

ALl you really had to do to defend agaisnt the Bucs was wrap up Evans and put a good guys on Godwin already not playng his most productive use

    Defensive necessities OVER

add to that the line ws as leaky as a rotten faucet BUT still – everything was alll Baker’s fault. Eite QBs lift their team no matter what

Now you sorry excuse for fans are with the completely opposite argument because Bakers stats look better than Mahomes – well Mahomes needs support

It seems the National sports media has taken some interest in the potential Baker Mayfield resurgence. The interest lies in that he was a first overall draft pick of the Browns. The media loves a good story. Of course Mayfields credentials are poor, he’s been a huge disappointment as a first overall nfl draft pick.
Excitement for Mayfield is feverant with his last two impressive games. Let’s all curb our enthusiasm, let’s see if he can consistently perform well.

  76. D Cone Says:

Earlier in the season the Baker Blowhards were excusing away his crappy play with drops and were throwing the receivers under the Bus.
Chiefs have the most drops in the league and 16 more than the Bucs.
Now their using their drops to try to put more lipstick on this pig.

Based on the BBH line of rationalizing Mahomes should have 16 more TD’s.

One year prove it deal will only show he’s worthy of a starting position. he’ll have to string a few great seasons together to get a big Contract.
    Keep Dreaming Big.

  77. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

There’s nothing crazy about saying that Mayfield has better personal QB stats than Mahomes so far this season. Numbers don’t lie.

There’s nothing crazy about saying the Bucs are getting more value for their QB dollar than the Chiefs are. That’s obvious considering the pay disparity. Even if Mahomes had better numbers, it could still be true due to the difference in pay.

What IS crazy is to say that Mayfield is better than Mahomes and that’s not what is being pointed out here. Mahomes is the best QB in the league until he isn’t. It’s a team sport, any player can have an off year, etc.

It’s as goofy as saying Baker is better than Brady simply based on QB stats this year compared to last year. It’s a different team in a number of ways:

Last year we had to scramble to put together an o-line on the fly, holding it together with bubble gum and duct tape. This year, we had a plan to fix it and the only snag was losing Jensen again. Overall, they’re a better unit.

Last year Evans missed a game early on with his suspension, Godwin was still working his way back after the ACL injury and we couldn’t keep a #3 receiver healthy. Julio Jones and Gage were rarely available and when they were, they’d last a quarter or a half of a game and get injured again.

Last year we had Lefty. Nuff said.

Mahomes isn’t getting a lot of help on offense but his D is rock-solid. He’s also making dumb mistakes and throwing some bad picks. Nobody is perfect. Facts are facts tho. He gets paid a ton more than Baker and Baker has slightly better numbers. It is what it is.

Nobody claimed Buster Douglas was a better boxer than Mike Tyson just because he knocked him out. He was better that night. Period.

Signing Mayfield sure looks like the best FA signing of the season to me. We’re getting plenty of bang for our buck and that’s all this article is about.

  78. Rod Munch Says:

Mahomes top WR target is Justin Watson — who the Bucs cut because he wasn’t one of our top 7 WR’s.

Baker has had a great 2 game hot streak, and hopefully he can keep it up.

But idiocy like this, is why people hate the Baker Bois.

  79. Gipper Says:

    RodMunch,

Funny haven’t heard Evans or Godwin complain about Baker. Might have something to do with Evans having a career year with Mayfield. Got it. You know more than Mike and Godwin. What a complete and utter dud you are stud.

Rod munchkin say mahomes has Watson he also has kelce what about toney last super bowl he was clutch for mahomes& I’m pretty sure he has other receivers like all teams so baker has the same amount allotted by league rules baker uses everyone as he did most of the season as receivers.he has been on this team for 8 months mahomes has been on Chiefs for 4 years he has the advantage of 3 full seasons with an already loaded cast so I wud say baker is holding his own as a newbie in tampa
