The Clever K.J. Britt Smokescreen

December 25th, 2023

Three snaps after a load of hype.

There’s a giant whiff of trickery still in the air over The Licht House and One Buc Palace.

It goes back to something head coach Todd Bowles has said multiple times on his radio show.

Bowles, who doubles at the Bucs’ defensive coordinator, has noted that offenses key on Devin White and craft gameplans to stop his blitzes and other things this season. That’s why Lavonte David has been more active as a blitzer, per Bowles.

So rewind to last week. The Bucs did everything they could to tell the public that White’s backup, K.J. Britt, was going to play a lot and that it was “his time” but White would play, too.

What really happened was Britt started against the Jaguars yesterday and was gone after the first snap. Britt played only two more defensive snaps the rest of the game. White played 95 percent of the snaps.

When the game kicked off, Joe suspiciously noted on X that Britt was on the coverage team. That’s not a typical spot for a starting linebacker.

Joe suspects Bowles knew all along that White would play all game. He either started Britt as a way to throw off the Jags, or it was one part gamesmanship and one part a small punishment of White.

Regardless, White played great, broke free on pass rushers and overrated Jags QB Trevor Lawrence admitted to being a little confused.

Joe’s putting a check in Bowles’ win column for throwing off the Jags.

i was looking for him all game and couldn’t find him

  2. Buc4evr Says:

Idk, maybe White convinced Bowles he was 100%. Don’t think there was any trickery involved.

  3. Dave Pear Says:

He flashes and even on his best day is wildly inconsistent and busts coverages. What a waste of potential.

  4. DS Says:

Bowles lit a fire under white

  5. DS Says:

    He looked fast AF yesterday

Agreed. Glad he got a pick, but Lawrence is the second coming of Jaboo in that regard.

I still saw shoulder pad tackles ( the ones he didn’t miss) . Still really not impressed.

When he referred to himself in the third person after the game, that was it for me.

How are you supposed to sack a QB if you can’t do what White did? A Jag defender did the exact same thing to Mayfield and it wasn’t called……In my book, that was a sack for White.

  8. RGA Says:

    Devin White was great yesterday.

  9. SufferingSince76 Says:

That roughing the passer call on White was bullspit.

OMG! Joe has sunk to an ESPN-worthy journalistic low. ‘Bowles the evil genius,’ said no one ever.

Bowles is a total enigma. I dont trust what he says, but I can see it working. I dont think gaslighting your best players is the way to go, but Godwin is coming back to form, and we had a 45 sighting on Sunday. Gonna give up on trying to figure him out. He beats the Saints AGAIN on sunday, and I am on board. I love the aggressive style of play on BOTH sides of the ball. Turnovers have more impact when you spend all 4 downs to get 7 pts instead of 3. I hoping to see this when BA stepped down, and if ever it was a better time to happen… LFG!!!

Fire Bowles …..this is bush league tactics !

  13. BakerBucs Says:

David says new name blavid says now that name change is stupid & childish that’s what I expect from a phony POS

Remember before playoff appearance Lenny was a hero he was pouting and almost quit. Then he play his best ball through the remainder of the season. Let’s go white show them all

  15. Bucsgoham12 Says:

Britt was starter in name only. He had the 1st snap and stopped a run on another. White had an amazing game though.

  16. EternalSon Says:

There are many angles to Bowles as an effective coach that I appreciate!

This team went through some s and keep it together.

    Go Bucs!

Amazing game my butt! Yes, he blitzed and got home and had a bogus penalty and showed the speed and athleticism but Amazing game? Not by a freakin long shot…the media has a love affair with this phony and i don’t know why. He did his job…3-4 times in the game….he still missed a lot of tackles, continues to tackle above the waist…way above most of the time…cannot shed a block for anything…horrible for an off the ball LB and overruns plays constantly while being out of position on many others. Oh, by the way, Pff has him ranked 81st out of 82 lbs with enough qualifying plays…or somewhere in that vicinity…great player? I think not!!

I’m not going as far as you on this one Joe…LOL

I’m old but not blind. I noticed it too. Saw Britt on the teams same as you. After the 3rd play I am sure someone on the Jags noticed far sooner than you or I. BTW LVD played like man posessed…a clinic for any ILB to learn from. To include Diva White.

QBs do take note of blitzers even benched ones. LOL

Bowles was swithcing it up alot more than usual Sunday. Bringing the house more than once. With and without White. Dropping JTS, Nelson and company in to coverage more as a result. I think, that and a great effort by our rushers got in Lawrences head.

    Go Bucs!

  19. SteelStudBuc Says:

Bowles has been coaching well during this streak. Rolling the dice on 4th downs… obviously it’s a good call when u get it but, the guys sure do get more amped up and confident.

When DW tries he is very good, don’t know that he’s great. As usual, on many blitzes , the QB jukes DW cuz he’s coming in full speed and they just need to step left or right.
Luckily on the Antoine Winfield sack, Trevor Lawrence juked right and Winfield was there to wrap him up as DW missed Trevor and went to the ground behind the play/sack.
Seen Devin come in like an unguided missile many times, QB steps to side he DW blasts pass the target. Many those miss fires still got in Lawrence’s head.
