Jason Licht Calls Out Defensive Leaders, Names Five

November 12th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Joe always pays close attention when general manager Jason Licht starts naming names.

Most GMs like to name every receiver on their roster if, for example, they are talking about receiver contributions and performance. GMs love to include every last name. Ask Licht about Rachaad White, and he’ll surely mention his other three running backs. It’s just what GMs usually do.

However, Licht didn’t do that today on the Buccaneers Radio Network pregame show, and perhaps it was a window into player evaluation in the fancy offices of One Buc Palace.

Licht was asked about Lavonte David approaching more franchise records and his strong 2023 season. Licht raved about David, of course, but then Licht rolled unprompted into how more defensive players need to follow David’s lead and those of four other veterans.

“Offensively, we showed a little spark [against Houston,] and we’re going to get it going, I think. But defensively, Lavonte, Antoine [Winfield], Shaq [Barrett], Vita [Vea] and Will Gholston, those veterans are setting the standard and the rest of them need to start following.”

Hmm, coincidence that Licht left out captain Devin White, along with his expensive veteran cornerbacks? Perhaps.

Interestingly, after today’s thrilling win against the Titans, head coach Todd Bowles cited great leadership last week from Winfield, White, David and Vea in the aftermath of the Houston Horror.

Yeah, Davis and Dean aren’t worth mentioning yet alone paying $15M/year.

  2. Bojim Says:

    Keep David. Trade White.

  3. Jack Clark Says:

Jason Licht needs to give Todd Bowles to bench JTS soft, weak, useless, sorry as and stop playing him just because of how much money the Bucs have to waste on him to sit on the bench. Only real men who need to feed their families by sacking quarterbacks should be in our rotation. Not feminine, soft men who prefer to look like women and get blocked like a practice dummy!

Jason Licht needs to give Todd Bowles the green light to bench JTS sorry, soft, weak, useless as****

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

JTS should only play on special teams.

  6. Old School Bucs Says:

Aaaashhhhh yes, great win against another sub 500 team.

Interrogative: why havent the bucs been able to beat teams above 500 in the last couple years ( with very few exceptions)? Was it because of Brady? Playoff Lenny? Evans cant hold on to the ball? …….when the correct answer is given and then the solution is executed we will be back in the playoffs!

JTS should only play on special teams.

    ^^^^
Facts 😂 He should only be used to swat passes and field goals because he is 6’5 and lengthy

  8. Miller5252 Says:

I think the guys who the Bucs want to be leaders stepped up today and had good games. Evans had a big game, besides Mayfield’s punt early in the game, he had a good game. David was a stud again and almost had 2 picks. White was all over today with a sack. Vea, with his helmet on sideways, had a sack and was opening up the middle for the rest of the line. Winfield had another really good game. Winfield and Wirfs contracts are gonna be huge! Man those 2 and David are having such great years! Too bad David wasn’t Whites age because his contract would be ridiculously high as well!

  9. Miller5252 Says:

@Jack Clark you’re just as mad as the rest of us when it comes JTS!! You tell em Jack!! We all agree 😂😂

Licht needs to quit drafting guys that look like genetic freaks because both JTS and OJ Howard are both useless!

    JTS – Just To Soft

  11. Winny Testaverde Says:

Licht didn’t mention his LightWeight former 1st round draft pick Joe Barely Tryon. We should always embrace a win…but it buys Bowles time.

  12. Tye Says:

Saints and Falcons may have to rely on bobo backup qbs the next few games so the Bucs have greater opportunity to get back into NFC South crown race if they can win the next few games!

Jason, bake em up for an extension. I’m thinking 3 yrs. 110 mil. ( guarantee 60 mil) .

  14. Buc4evr Says:

JTS, White, Dean and possibly Davis need to be gone.

You think Baker’s play has earned him a $33M annual increase?

BAKER RESIGNS FOR 8-YEARS $500-MILLION AFTER BUCS WIN THE SUPER BOWL! YAY!

Tony.. the market defines value.. I consider this giving the Bucs a discount. Baker continues this line of performance, he’s a top 10 qb. He will want a 4-5 yr deal, but take 3 with a nice signing bonus and no trade clause ( which he could negotiate later). Daniel jones got 4 yrs/ 150 mil.? I won’t be surprised if there’s a bidding war for him… if he finishes with something like 30/10 touchdown to int ratio.

  18. Let ‘em bake Says:

I know many are clamoring for Trask, or new qb via draft. There is something to be said for continuity. If this offensive core stays intact ( with upgrades at rb, possibly center) they hit the ground running next year , having learned, and even mastered, Canales system. My guess is panthers, saints, and falcons will have new faces at head coach next year . That’s a recipe for another legitimate run at greatness . Also, I could see bake taking the aforementioned discount so as to assist in resigning the other free agents ( Winfield, Evans , etc).. that’s my story and I’m sticking to it .

    What about Joe Tryon-Shoyinka?

I love how Jason Licht comes out in public boating after a Bucs win.
However, when they lose or are on a losing streak he is nowhere to be found.
I think last week I saw his picture on a milk carton

  22. BrianBucs Says:

    Boasting*

  23. JK Says:

Jason needs to rid his roster of Trask; and then all of his relatives like the Throbbing Rod Muncher might go away with him

  24. realistic-optimistic Says:

You do know this team is still in cap hell for the next two seasons. They can get a QB in a potentially historic QB draft and have him locked up on a cap-friendly contract for 5 years. Overpaying for a journeyman is not wise.

He will want a 4-5 yr deal, but take 3 with a nice signing bonus and no trade clause ( which he could negotiate later).

Even worse, you think Baker has enough leverage to demand a no-trade clause?? lol

  25. realistic-optimistic Says:

    Daniel jones got 4 yrs/ 150 mil

And don’t give me this “market value” BS. Ask the G-men if they’re happy with that contract.

  26. BakerBucs Says:

good bye rod munchkin says don’t u c everyone on this site really likes u r demeanor move on u have to be a Democrat it’s written all over u r comments

  27. HeavyE Says:

Licht, needs to fire himself, for these terrible players, he has brought here from the Draft and FA………& let’s not forget about the players he did resign!!!!!

  28. Brandon Says:

I guess the JTS haters missed his big tackle for loss on Derrick Henry.. We’ve got the lowest IQ fans in the league.

  29. Daniel Dream Says:

We kicked some serious butt today. Now we gotta cut out the penalties and mistakes and the future will be bright. Also it’d be nice if Canales recognized not every run must be straight up the gut. White can’t push the pile but he’s lightning quick- and the middle of our offensive trench is more nimble than powerful. Why not direct more of the run game to the edges? At least we finally started to see a screen game come into effect! This game was a step in the right direction.

  30. Let ‘em bake Says:

Realistic …. True. They’re not. Ditto Garapollo . Ditto Carr. You’re conflating results with market value . See the distinction. They paid for potential upside based on ( recent) past results , ala Geno Smith. Baker maybe this years geno smith, and land a nice deal.

  31. Let ‘em bake Says:

Realistic… look at Derek carts contract . 1 million this year, the rest as signing bonus… that’s how you sign , and get around the cap. Signing bonus not counted against the cap.

  32. Conner50 Says:

Hey Brandon we all seen the one single tackle he got on Henry and not very impressive when your unblocked he should have made the tackle, should have made more plays and throughout the season but he’s not making strides. Should be benched for yaya already see more in yaya than JTS

  33. Conner50 Says:

HeavyE says Licht should fire himself for the draft picks and fa singed this year.. guess you don’t remember that Licht got us all the guys who won us a Super Bowl few years ago smh. Also drafted guys like Vea,Winfield,Evans,Godwin,Wirfs,Marpet,Whitehead,Edwards, and Cappa I know there’s more guys that was good but your not gonna strike gold every draft pick lmao he’s done a pretty damn good job being Bucs gm

  34. unbelievable Says:

Lavonte has balled out every game this season.

I’ll give Devin White some props too- he had a good game today outside of that one totally blown coverage that went for a big first down conversion.

  35. BucU Says:

Enjoy this win. Next wknd we’re back to being the league pinada.

  36. Ray Says:

@realistic-optimistic…the inflated market value on qbs is real. Look what Carr got, he is nowhere good enough for that contract. Are the Giants happy, that’s a big NO but happiness is irrelevant when you are talking about an inflated market. These ridiculous 35 million per year and up contracts will backfire and I sure hope that the QB bubble bursts like the rb market

  37. Ray Says:

@Brandon…LMAO, no we all saw JTS get his career tackle for loss on Henry. We all said the same thing, too little too late. He’s a freaking joke.

  38. Ray Says:

It takes a low IQ to think JTS and his tackle for loss makes up for years of nothing.

  39. Arn evans Says:

JTS is a waste of Space He’s killing us on that side. Help
