“It’s Frustrating”

November 20th, 2023

Antoine Winfield, Jr.

Joe believes the Bucs are a few plays from a 6-4 record rather than the 4-6 they’re stuck with now.

Other fans believe the Bucs are just a couple of mistakes from hanging with the NFL’s elite!

Joe can’t go quite that far. But look at yesterday, those optimists would say. The Bucs were a Cade Otton touchdown drop from being within six points of the 49ers and having all the momentum in the game with less than four minutes to play.

Antoine Winfield Jr. said today that he feels how close the Bucs have been.

“It’s definitely frustrating, especially when the game is so close and then a few plays happen and then it seems like it gets out of hand,” Winfield said. “It’s frustrating. All we can really do is just learn from it and see what ways we can get better so we can not, you know, make those same mistakes we made in the past.”

It is frustrating. But Joe can tolerate this Bucs season as long as the team right’s the pirate ship over the next two Sundays with games against the Colts and Panthers.

Those teams are not among the NFL elite, and neither is as good as the Texans, or even the Falcons.

Just win those games, Bucs. Joe can envision exploring a 6-6 Bucs record and feeling like things are going reasonably well.

“It’s Frustrating” – waiting on the day Bowels is sent packing ~ sure is!

  3. unbelievable Says:

Truth is they were far more competitive yesterday compared to last year against the niners.

    – critical turnover from Baker when we were driving down the field

    – huge TD drop by Cade Otton

    – Defense PI not called on that 4th down TD throw

    – Baker missing 2 – 3 long throws throughout the game

A couple plays go different, and it’s possibly a tie ball game if not the Bucs winning. Problem was we got toally boat raced in that 3rd quarter, going from 13-7 to 27-7 over the span of about 12 minutes.

  4. David Says:

    Joe,
It’s weird and surprising and difficult to understand how you manage Bucs losses by spinning everything away from Baker and his direct factors in Bucs losses.
    Article should also say:
Bucs were Baker’s interception away from being within six points of the 49ers hitting the defender helmet instead of Chris G.

Shoulda, woulda or coulda is what you get with an incompetent HC and QB.

  5. Panhandle Buc Says:

Right on track for my 8 win season prediction. Frustrating but also predicted…

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

THAT’s the difference! Making those plays. They’re there to make and we don’t capitalize.

  7. David Says:

Season was over when we lost to garbage team called Atlanta at home with Baker throwing picks within the FG range at the end of the game instead of dumping to wide open White in the middle.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We are two coaches away from being good…….Bowles & Canales…….yes, I include Canales……..he continues to call runs on 1st & 2nd down that fail….some say they admire him for his consistancy in that regard……nope, it’s Leftwich stubbornness with a better command of the English language.

  10. David Says:

There is no shame losing to 49er’s. Season was over when we lost three game in a row at home with Baker throwing more picks than Td’s.

  12. Jack Clark Says:

Losing to the Texans hurts so bad because if we won LIKE WE WERE SUPPOSE TO 🤡 we would be in first place with a 5-5 record smh

  13. Hodad Says:

We could be the Texans next year. New 1st round franchice QB, new head coach. Instead we’ll resign Baker, bring back Bowles, rince, and repeat.

  14. David Says:

Toilet Bowl has done decent job with ranked no. 9 defense but offense can’t score in first quarter of the games to accommodate the defense. Toliet Bowl is so quick to throw his players on the defensive side of the ball not the offensive side including Baker.
Mayfield tossed a one-yard TD to Mike Evans late in the second quarter, but he otherwise struggled to get much going. He scores 7 points in first half with additional 7 points by the end of the third quarter with less than 100 passing yard.
    Pathetic.

  15. Fred McNeil Says:

Even if we somehow make it to 9-8 and win the division we draw the highest seeded wildcard. Probably the Cowboys. It’s nice to dream of revenge, but I just don’t see it. Still, it’s nice to have a home playoff game I guess.
Our offense is reliably mediocre. Our defense is both fantastic and fecal from play to play and series to series. It’s a roll of the dice every play. One thing I do not comprehend is how several times a game we leave somebody crucial completely ignored. Then blindly flail at the tackle like a dog humping someone’s leg. See George Kittle.

  16. ModHairKen Says:

Spot on Tampabaybucfan. Canales keeps repeating what ain’t working. Everyone knows it won’t work. Except him.

Canales should call every play as if a vice grip was on his balls and if they get less than 4 yards, they will clamp down. That’d end the ridiculous run calls.

  17. SufferingSince76 Says:

Just like old times. Waiting on next year’s draft.

  18. Tony Marks Says:

    Hahahaha
    I loooove it

Traskies like David posting furiously because even they realize –

Baker foiled them again and isn’t going to be benched like they got their little hopes up for the Niners game.

I tried to warn them not to get their little hopes up but they wouldn’t listen. Don’t even have to read their posts any more

You can just translate each post to the sound of infants wailing

  19. Dwayne Cone Says:

If the few mistakes are Draft Picks and Free Agent signings I might agree.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Looks like we win a superbowl every 20 yrs or so. We fans are so frustrated, we laugh, get snockered before the games to kill the pain, and just say, On to the next loss. So I know the players are frustrated also. Its a Buc Life guys. A few additions and we will be very good in 2 or 3 yrs.

  21. TonySoprano Says:

This is the NFL. It’s a game of inches. Almost every team is “a few plays away from a win.” Almost every game is determined by a few key plays.

I suppose you can cope and sugarcoat it, but fact is the Bucs lost by 13, which relatively speaking, is a blowout in this league. You seem to basking in moral victories, which is an awful sign how low this organization has sunk.

  22. Bojim Says:

Feel bad for him and Mike and Chris and Wirfs etc

  23. Bojim Says:

    And LVD!!

  24. HC Grover Says:

They are a few coaches away. And a game plan or two, Bozo is a born loser and his losing will continue.

  25. bama2k23 Says:

We’re also a couple plays away from being 2-8

  26. HC Grover Says:

Canalas and his cute by half plays.

  27. Pelsbuc61 Says:

It’s frustrating for the fans to see an incompetent HC ( who is also a bad DC), a clueless and stubborn OC and players like D. White going through the motions until he’s outta here. It’s frustrating to see JTS, Hall and now Kancey do absolutely nothing on defense. It’s frustrating to see the lack of any semblance of a running game. It’s frustrating to see Davis and Dean toasted and miss tackles and see every opponents running wide open. It’s frustrating to settle for the goal of somehow winning the worse division in football so as to get embarrassed in the playoffs. It’s frustrating to hear all the excuses and miscommunications week after week.

  28. David Says:

Toilet Bowl is a good DC. I mean it. Ranked No. 9. He is just terrible HC.

  29. dbbuc711 Says:

He needs to rip someone a new one when they screw up.
Up and down side to side in front of the whole dam stadium.

  30. DeRobbins Says:

delusional. we are in a league where o-line and d-line play disparity is the defining factor in the tiers, almost more than QB play.

We are not in the top 2 tiers of line play on either side of the ball. but we are pretty good elsewise. (i feel like secondary play is starting to look consistently weak instead of just aberrations as well).

The result is, we can hang with teams that are in the second tier of line play, and look really good vs the 3rd tier. But when we play the eagles, niners, or bills we look grossly inferior.

    and feel that way.

looking at the rest of the season, we will probably be in the playoff hunt down to the end. Then face a top tier line team in the playoffs and be embarrassed out of the playoffs. Again.

We have to fix the trenches. new dline coaches. new players on both sides in the draft.

  31. HC Grover Says:

I am not frustrated one bit. Bozo is just a joke of a HC. That is the Glazer Curse….It is their fault. I will enjoy watching the results. Aftern all it is The Buccaneers. Win Lose Tie Oh Well. Soon we will do the right thing an get rid of ariens Clunker Drops.

  32. Dana Says:

This team has one game left against a team with a winning record. Yesterday, they looked good on 3rd and short, special teams, in the pocket and very few penalties.

I would not be surprised if this team wins the final seven games heading into the playoffs. The only thing to wish for is that Seattle wins the division over San Francisco.

If we meet San Francisco again in 2 months, we can beat them in Tampa. Who knows, maybe Sean Tucker will be on the field by then.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

Unbelievable … ‘Problem was we got totally boat raced in that 3rd quarter, going from 13-7 to 27-7 over the span of about 12 minutes.’

Interesting take on the game. You’re right of course, but the bigger question is WHY? As I look at the Drives Summary, I think I see what happened, but that still doesn’t explain WHY. We forced them to punt on their 1st drive of the game, but then gave up a TD on Drive 2, a FG on Drive 3 & a FG on Drive 4 then the 1st half ended (with us behind 13-7). Game still within reach.

San Fran only had it for 2 drives in the 3rd qtr. On Drive 5 they scored a TD based on that long bomb (76 yd TD). Bucs punted (again) on their next drive, and on Drive 6 the 49ers scored another TD to open up a 27-7 lead. That was a long (5:18) drive that ate the clock and covered 79 yards in 9 plays, with the back-breaker being ANOTHER long (40 yd) deep pass completion. Clearly the Bucs’ Secondary was reeling, but so was the rest of the defense (on those 2 drives, 49ers ran it 7 times for 26 yards and passed it 5 times, all completed, for 151 yards). After that, the 49ers just burned the clock in the 4th qtr.

So after that first drive of the game, San Fran scored on FIVE consecutive drives (3 TDs & 2 FGs), took a 27-7 lead. Had they chosen to keep flinging the ball, they probably could’ve scored another TD or 2, but instead they went into protect mode and let their defense finish us off. Our pass defense is really shaky … 2 deep bombs (76 yds & 40 yds) broke our backs.

  34. Bucs4Life Says:

I’m gonna be at Indy this Sunday! Go Bucs!

  35. unbelievable Says:

@DR – Yup those 2 explosive plays really broke our back.

Scoring on 5 drives in a row is also obviously terrible, but holding to FGs vs allowing TDs would have / could have made a huge difference.

At the end of the day, the Bucs has basically no room for error if they wanted to pull out a win. And unfortunately, 2 turnovers, some dropped passes, some errant throws and multiple defensive breakdowns meant they weren’t pulling out anything but a loss.

  36. unbelievable Says:

Something else of interest- we’ve been getting outscored in the 1st and 3rd quarters of games all season long. By contrast, we score more than our opponents do on average during the 2nd and 4th quarters of games…

I don’t know the rhyme or reason behind it, or why this team always seems to come out flat and take a while to get going, but here we are.

  37. gotbbucs Says:

This team is not a play or two per game away from beating most teams. The 49ers would have hung 40 or 50 on this defense if the Bucs offense could have kept pace in the 3rd quarter.

Baker threw A PICK out of 42 attempts, Falcons had 156 on the ground, after we tied it up, they went the length of the field in the last minute

  39. Sly Pirate Says:

“All we can do is learn from it.”

Bowles has had a lot of years and a lot of games to learn from. All we’ve learned in the last two is he ain’t a HC.

  40. realistic-optimistic Says:

@DR, yep that pretty much sums it up. The score was as close as it was only because SF pulled back. They even dropped multiple INTs while coasting to victory. Fans who saw this as a close game weren’t paying attention.

    —-

a good chunk of it is may be we only go hurry up/no huddle in 4th quarters. Urgency in play calling factors in – 2nd and 4th quarter time elapsing ends drives so you hustle. In 1st and 3rd quarters theres no rush to get the ball down the field before the quarter ends because yu can pick up the drive in the next quarter.

  44. Defense Rules Says:

Tony Marks … ‘In 1st and 3rd quarters theres no rush to get the ball down the field before the quarter ends because you can pick up the drive in the next quarter.’

Maybe the answer is as simple as ‘The Bucs need to play with a SENSE OF URGENCY from game start to game end’?

    Nasty group on these boards.

  47. DJB Says:

As long as Fred Warner was on the field for the 49ers, the Bucs were not going to win. Nobody on the offense wanted anything to do with him.

  48. Brandon Says:

before the season started I had the team at 6-4 right now… I still feel like that’s where they SHOULD be. Wins vs the Falcons and Texans slipped away… even if they dropped one of those, the Hail Mary failure could’ve evened it up. Either way, I’ve been touting this as a 10+ win team… I still see that. There isn’t a game on the schedule that isn’t winnable and we’ll probably be favored against every team except the Jags on the road. This is still a 10 win team if they stay focused and together. Canales did a little better job of doing some of the things i believed he needed to do and do more of…. now the D just has to hit a groove I know they can get into.

  49. PNW Buc Says:

Just enjoy each game. I love football and the Bucs!
We all knew this was going to be a rough season. We had the 2nd worst salary cap situation and 13 rookies made the final roster and are getting some valuable experience.
Support your team and have fun. The off season will be here soon enough and all us closet GMs will be coming up with ways to improve our Bucs.
Let’s go Bucs and kick some Colt tail!
