Impotent Offense

November 26th, 2023

“Hey Dave, I don’t see anyone open.”

The Bucs had 127 yards of offense today in the first half against what was the NFL’s 26th-ranked Colts defense.

It was as if the offense’s gains of the past few weeks evaporated.

Joe’s not sure how or why the Bucs offense evaporated after their 15-play, 72-yard opening drive. Drops by Chris Godwin and Trey Palmer were killers, as was a Baker Mayfield interception and him needless taking needless sacks in Colts territory.

Throw the ball away!!

The Bucs did a hell of a job today succeeding in taking points off the board.

It’s easy to blame offensive coordinator Dave Canales and a little hard to do that at the same time. But the bottom line is he has a slumping unit overall and his offense continues to shoot itself in the foot over and over.

On a day the Bucs had a real running game, they couldn’t put enough points on the board. And no, 20 points is not a lot, far below the league average.

Yeah, yeah, work in progress. Joe’s sick of hearing it. Christmas is around the corner.

You wasted all of our time and a season getting our draft pick reps.

    Thanks Bruce Arians…

Maybe it wasn’t Byron Leftwich. Maybe Todd insisted on him calling running plays. At lest Byron could scheme receivers open and had a red zone offense

  20. Jordan Says:

Average offense this year is down to 20.7 pts a game.

Bucs offense is average, but can’t score in the red zone. Canales is calling a fine game, but Godwin, Palmer dropping easy catches and baker taking dumb sacks constantly were killing us.

On the game ending strip sack, white was WIDE A$$ open for a first down check down the whole play.

Mayfield will turn into a cancer if he isn’t starting.

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

How do you explain Ryan Neal, Greg Gaines and these other trash players on defense?

  38. Tony Marks Says:

people can whine about the offense all they want. this team is a disaster on defense.

its not just the last few losses . teams have been marching down the field of numerous games. We could have scored a TD on the final drive before the fumble and still would have lost.

  45. Havenbuc Says:

Those time outs would’ve been used if we kept the ball there… thanks Baker!! Keep holding the ball & doing your happy feet dance. Casuals still hate to see the defense is top 10 in points allowed per game (what actually decides games). We let an inconsistent underachiever come in here and convince us this team isn’t good enough.

  46. HC Grover Says:

These two teams were equally bad as I predicted. Bowzo outblundered the Colts. He could of had a tie but Nooooo. This is now on the Glazers they will lose to the Panters. This was a Glorious Loss as I predicted. Glorious. One of Bozos best losses.

  47. UKBuccaneer Says:

There’s no point drafting a QB if you’re not gonna protect him. Interior O-line, DB’s and defensive line are all greater priorities than QB.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Tbbucs3, you always point out the bad players and bad picks, even if they are late rounders.

You are the only one I know that calls Palmer a bust. That alone destroys your credibility…but go ahead, keep insulting people and pointing fingers. That’s what TRUMPets do.

  49. Craig Says:

I am not blaming Canales. Baker had huge flat spots in his game today. He just could not move the ball, largely because he missed seeing open receivers.

Mayfield is already a cancer. You cannot have three or 4 series where you do not put forth any effort as the QB.

  50. TheBucsAnthem Says:

  54. HC Grover Says:

Oh Please these coaches are just pathetic. Give it up wit da excuses.

  55. Buc4evr Says:

Wow what comedy of errors. Soft defense and poorly called and executed plays on offense. Hope no one took the “over” on this lousy excuse for a team. Bowles, Baker and Canales- defining losing in new and interesting ways, one game at a time. The season is officially over.

“Gibberish. QB throwing one int and being sacked several times doesn’t mean he caused any loss.”

He cost us the game by fumbling when we were within a TD at the end.

Bowles cost us the game with horrible clock management and giving up in the last 43 seconds…after he kept letting the clock run down.

    So yes…it really does.

  64. mick Says:

Bucfan1988 Says: “IT’S TIME FOR THE GLAZERS TO GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR A$$ AND START TASK SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT THEY HAVE IN THIS KID. Then you can start to plan your draft strategy.”

No. That’s what the other 31 NFL teams would do. Not the Bucs though. They have Joe and Ira who can tell whether a kid can play just by not seeing the kid play. It’s a rare talent few have, but we’re lucky to have guys who have it!

  65. Dreambig Says:

    There fixed it.

  68. Rod Munch Says:

Outside of the series of moronic calls on the goalline, Canales called a good game today. To get 20 points out of Baker Mayfield means you had an A+ week, even if 7 of those points came from getting a turnover on the Colts 20 yard line.

  69. IE Buc Says:

I wanted the Bucs to draft Zack Moss so bad in the 2020 draft and couldn’t believe they passed over him in favor of do nothing sneak Vaughn. One of the many mistakes for which Licht has to go.

Glazers need to do the right thing and can Bowles right now mid-season for the first time in their history. Fire Bowles and Canales. Begin the house cleaning and see what they got with a new OC and DC calling plays.

  70. Jgar Says:

This defense can’t stop anyone. Even if we would have tied it we would have lost . Who runs our defense? Oh yeah the head coach. Time to end this and fire Bowles.

  71. ModHairKen Says:

Well, for all you Trask fanboys, he did finally get in and what did he do? Nothing. What a loser!!!!

  72. m milligan Says:

I would guess they all need to decide if they want to take paycut or go look for new job. Feel sorry for evans, SOB giving his all, so are others, Stunk up the highway today. No more “they’re coming back for me” i’m afraid.

  73. Rod Munch Says:

Baker Mayfield, 199 yards, 2 TDs and 2 turnovers.

    There’s your problem.

Personally, I don’t care about turnovers that much so long as you’re scoring points. But if you turn the ball over AND don’t score points, you’re the issue.

Put in Trask. I doubt he’s any better, but you need to know what you have next year – and if you’re drafting a new QB, maybe if Trask looks good you can flip him for a pick. Right now Trask is worthless, and Baker isn’t under contract, nor would I want him back, and the team stinks.

There is literally no reason we should see Baker again this season.

  74. BucU Says:

We’re officially in the holiday season time of year. The Buccaneers will be an afterthought to pretty much everybody for the rest of another miserable season under soon to be fired Todd B.
It must really suck being a writer covering this team now. How the mighty have fallen.
    Pitiful.

  75. mick Says:

Baker looks like our franchise quarterback more and more each week. By that I mean, a franchise that is not interested in seeing how its second-round quarterback can perform in a game with the starters is a loser and a perfect fit for 4-7 Baker.

  76. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

ModKaren is that a joke. He should’ve had that td it was a beautiful pass. Guarantee a Colts receiver wouldn’t caught it!

  77. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

  78. mick Says:

You think we don’t know that already? The odds are against him

    ___-

dont even bother with a reverse. Trask guys like you all season have been screaming the quick answer is on bench.

Thing is I see no reason to not put Trask in now and it has nothing to do with Mayfield. It has to do with the fact that every Qb the plays our defense looks better than they do against any other team.

Anyone who thinks that had it been closer and the Colts didn’t play it safe on the second to last drive they would not score again is delusional

So I am now on board with Trask getting time. I always said when the race was out of shot it would be time. Don’t really care about the standings – though I am sure Bowles does – with this defense I would not think the bucs should be favored any remaining game.

They might even ressurrect the game and confidence of the QB play going forward

    for the Panthers.

  82. Couch Fan Says:

Baker cheerleaders would rather lose with Baker than win with anybody else! Its Baker or NOBODY!! Then they call turn around and call us bad fans. LMAO

  83. BucfaninMi Says:

Trask can’t start on a crappy team. Why would anyone think he’s better?

  84. mick Says:

Joe and Ira got their work cut out for them this week hyping Baker. They should ask hazardous duty pay from the Bucs.

  85. HC Grover Says:

  86. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Rod it’s about egos now. Trask comes in and lights it up they all look really bad.

They have to bury Trask on the bench to maintain a narrative – Bowles, Joe, Stroud (who hates Trask), Ira, etc… as delusional as it is.

This kid is not going to get an opportunity here until this regime is gone.

  87. mick Says:

BucfaninMi Says: “Trask can’t start on a crappy team. Why would anyone think he’s better?”

    1. He can start, however a guy named Tom Brady was here his first two seasons and this season the Bucs promised Mayfield the starting job when he signed (see #2).

    2. According to even perennial Trask Bashing Joe, Trask outplayed Mayfield in training camp this season. That’s how everyone knows that Trask can do better and that Mayfield was promised the job when he signed.

  88. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tony Marks Says

Check your browser history, buddy. I have said:

    1) Trask was the clear winning of the most QB Competition
    2) Trask never had a real chance in Bowles eyes
    3) No one can say with certainty what Trask can do in real NFL games because he hasn’t been given the opportunity
    4) And I have ALWAYS said that we need to know if Trask is starter good, backup good, or bust
    5) I have also ALWAYS said that with Mayfield as starter, we win less than 40% of our games. RIGHT AGAIN!

LOl…Ya got to love he duplicitious nonsense of Buc’s fans. Offensive line is ranked highly by them when there are less sacks. then QB gets sacked 6 times and its on the QB.

Give up 6 sacks and of course it wiill result in a fumble at some point.

Still because the defense has PROVEN they can’t play pass defense – I do think its time for trask. I will stick to what I have always said – once the team is out of contention he should get playing time and with no pass defense no matter the standings – there is no race.

Bring on Trask and I will root for him . If he plays poorly I won’t laugh at him ….but I sure will laugh at you. Its STILL a softer schedule for him so its a good place to be in.

  90. David Says:

Bench Trash Baker. His fumble was nailed in Baker’s coffin. Would he keep starting in any other teams after going 1-6 in the last seven games ? Fire Bowls and the GM NOW, NOW.
This loss was all on offense and Baker poor plays, 1 int, 1 fumble , less than 200 yds.
Most of Baker’s yards coming in garbage times as per the last seven games.
Do not board Toilet B. back to Tampa. Leave them behind.

Start Trask. He showed you in just one play what we were missing if Chris G. didn’t drop the sure TD’s. That would have been Bucs first TD in first qtr. of the season.

  91. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

100%. And we know this because if Trask went on a 1-3 losing streak, much less a 1-6 losing streak like Baker is on, each of those quarterback geniuses would be screaming for Trask’s removal. But to them, there is no limit to how many games Baker can lose because they just can’t risk Trask making them look like dolts.

  93. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well, the only good thing about today is that when Joe said they were flexed, I thought he meant from 1pm to 4:04pm…so I missed almost the entire 1st quarter.

  94. UKBuccaneer Says:

The coaching staff’s jobs are on the line, but sure, they leave the young QB on the bench even though he’s better than mayfield, because they don’t want to look bad.

Have you Traskie’s even considered how stupid that theory is?

  95. Bucs13 Says:

Y’all tried to throw Brady under the bus last year. He was a problem, but he definitely wasn’t the biggest issue. The offense is only slightly better this year!!

    ——-

The Bucs literally lead the league in not giving up sacks for most of the year. However, as everyone knows that has ever watched Baker play over the years, once he crumbles, he takes down everyone with him. Today he holds the ball forever and eventually is sacked, and now that same offensive line which has been great, is the issue.

Meanwhile the running game all year is why Baker hasn’t been able to give us a big game — today, he’s got a running game, but it’s something else.

Oh right, Trey Palmer dropping a pass in the 3rd, that basically cost Baker the game. Not his fault.

  97. Lakeland Steve Says:

Any game now our offense is going to really break out, we’re on the verge, just hang in there Bucs fans, wins are coming. Only problem is we will be waiting until at least next year. We have all seen this many times before. Let’s face it, we aren’t a good football team. See you next year.

  98. mick Says:

David Says: “Start Trask. He showed you in just one play what we are missing if Chris G. didn’t drop the sure TD. That would have been the Bucs’ first TD in the first quarter this season.”

I couldn’t watch the game. Is there a video of the play?

No wonder the Trask haters aren’t mocking Trask’s incomplete tha shows up in the box score. They must know it was a sure TD dropped by Godwin. Makes sense.

  99. David Says:

We are F* losing anyway. Then what do we have to lose to start the young players. The defense wasn’t bad at all with our bench players. This could be the same with our offense.
Toilet B. do not want to admit to his F* up starting Baker and he is gone down with Baker as I predicted. Toilet B. has become Baker’s latest victim.
Bench Baker and the true leader will become the cancer in the locker room.

  100. realistic-optimistic Says:

    —–

You all ARE bad fans . THE WORST i have EVER seen in the NFl. In my many years following the NFL I have NEVER seen a fan base openly root for their own QB to get injured.

I saw it MULTIPLE TIMES on this blog. The good news is its mostly been on this blog’s commenting – not among general buc fans when you look elsewhere.

The problem for traskies like you is atlanta trounced the saints today. Bowles is still mathematically in the hunt and he doesn’t seem to think highly of Trask.

You can whine about Baker fans all you want but we are not why Trask is eating pine.

  104. David Says:

Trask could have Bucs first TD in first qtr. in the whole season with a perfect qb rating.

  105. IE Buc Says:

Ok so Baker was promised the starting job when he signed. Promise granted and fulfilled. It’s been 11 games. The season is lost and he is not the future. He’s played himself out of starting job.

Time to give Trask the fair shot that he has never been given. They thought so highly of him they almost drafted him in the first round in place of JTS, which I wished they would have and saved us from getting JTS. He should have been QB2 during the Brady years, but they kept his buddy Gabbert in place even though Trask continued to beat him out in preseason and by some accounts, he beat Baker out in this preseason. We need to see what Trask has for a whole game. For 5-7 games.

  106. Rod Munch Says:

Tony Marks – An actual Buccaneers fan wants what is best for the team, and that is for the team to get the rebuild over as quickly as possible and to get a franchise QB. What is worst for the team is to have a mid QB paired with an awful HC, that goes 5-12 or 6-11 every year.

I’d rather see the team take a one year hit and have hope for the future, over being on the treadmill of losing, where every year you know you don’t have a chance.

  107. UKBuccaneer Says:

Rod your argument would have a logic to it if the draft were a guarantee of finding a franchise QB. Since it’s not, and you’re just as likely to get ‘the guy’ in round 2 or 3 as you are in round 1, tanning makes no sense. Especially whilst the division is still in play.

However, as everyone knows that has ever watched Baker play …….He is the one that has caused those low sack numbers by doing at least three or more magic and houdini escape tricks to get away from the collapsing pocket.

There you can thank me later. 🙂

Heres your real problem Mush. Bowles always thinks he can fix his defense and the Hawks trounced the saints. So at least looking at standings today’s loss means little. Will Bowles make a switch now? I rather doubt it but we will see.

IF he doesn’t then Baker has thwarted you again.

realistic-optimistic Says: “@mick, it wasn’t a drop. But it was a nice throw to the back corner of the endzone. Barely out of reach.”

UKBuccaneer Says: “Trask’s pass was great. I don’t think anyone has denied that – it was a poor drop.”

Thanks for the info, guys. So drop or not, it was well placed. Nice to know. Sad that Joe makes no mention of it. If it was a bad pass it would have its very own article. 🙂

  110. orlbucfan Says:

Mayfield was sacked 6 times. He was hurt and should have been benched for his health. Canales better start Trask next weekend. He’s done being a rookie OC. Bowles better get with it on the refs. Dungy figured it out, but he had a few more years as a HC. Bowles needs another year. Canales and Devon White? UGGH!

  111. 1sparkybuc Says:

Whoever takes over this team will have one QB under contract that there is absolutely no film on. The Bucs will draft a QB and sign a reject veteran from some other team. Maybe Trask actually gets an opportunity with the next HC, but I doubt it. Odds are some other franchise will benefit from our stubbornness and stupidity eventually. Trask has exceeded expectations at every level, and set school and league records in the SEC. The Bucs have denied him any opportunity to play with the starters. I expect they will come to regret that.

  112. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I DON’T FEEL WE UTILIZE TREY PALMER’S SPEED & GREAT HANDS ENOUGH..WE DON’T THROW ENOUGH DEEP BALLS TO HIM..HE COULD BE A GAMEBREAKER FOR MOST TEAMS, BUT OUR COACHS SEEM TO LACK THE INTELLIGENCE & COMMON SENSE TO USE HIM LIKE THE OTHER 99% OF THE LEAGUE WOULD..WE ARE JUST A COWARDLY OFFENSE WHOSE AFRAID TO TAKE CHANCES..THAT’S WHY WE CONTINUE TO COME UP SHORT WEEKEND & WEEKOUT..WE DON’T PLAY TO WIN..WE PLAY NOT TO LOSE..WHICH HAS PROVEN BY SO MANY BUC’S COACHES OVER THE YEARS TO BE THE KISS OF DEATH & THEIR ASSES GOODBYE IN THE END..TOTALLY DISGUSTED BY OUR CHOKENEERS TODAY..

Tony Marks – An actual Buccaneers fan wants what is best for the team, and that is for the team to get the rebuild over as quickly as possible and to get a franchise QB.

    ——

You ae no fan Mush and not even a good human being because YOU precisely were one of the people who were advocating for Baker to be injured saying its fine since you want him out of there as the starter. As a fan and as a human being thats in line with being a fraud on both counts.

I don’t care what happens. I will never wish for Trask or any Bucs player to be injured. Go sit at the back of the class. Intelligent human beings don’t want to hear anything you have to say of being a fan after that kid.

  114. Proudbucsfan Says:

Simply, the whole team played like garbage.

  115. bob in valrico Says:

mick , that pass was thrown to the wrong side of the sideline. sideline and Godwin had no way of getting his feet down in bounds. aAnnouncer said it was thrown a little too late.

    So much for “Hope.”

  117. Red86 Says:

That’s weird. I don’t recall anyone wishing baker get hurt.

  118. UKBuccaneer Says:

The fundamental difference between Trask fans and Baker fans is that Baker fans will root for Trask if it’s what’s best for the team. The same can’t be said the other way.

  120. JoeyJoeJoe Says:

What stalled the offense in the first half? Stinnie cost them 7 to 11 points with the false start on the goal line and the hold on the 35. Palmer’s drop cost another 3 to 7. You can overcome that with a top tier defense, but ours is average at best.

So it wasn’t word per word. “I hope Baker get hurt this game.” Right no one said that. It’s no different than saying next man up.

  123. PowerOfPewter Says:

Bowles doesn’t have any answers. He’ll be fired at the end of the season. Might as well start Trask to show his fanbois he’s not the answer, and to get the new GM a better draft position.

Making up bs as usual. If anyone actual said “I hope Baker get hurt,” then I agree that’s wrong. Saying it’s Trask time isn’t it. Putting words in peoples mouth is just as wrong.

Traditionally I’d expect people to express some sympathy for an injured player as well.

Anyhoo, Baker fans showed support for trask when he came in, which was good to see. Some people at least support the team over a player.

Bunch of hypocritical armchair quarterbacks! Mayfield get sacked 6 times today because he was trying to do what you whiners want. Waiting for long routes to come open instead of hitting the dump off. Even sending Otten out long so the defense only had to cover the back.

You got what you asked for……and still complain.

    Not much to see

  141. Oneilbuc Says:

All you Baker Mayfield fans need to shut up now Baker Mayfield is not the quarterback you guys think he is. This offense is trash because 70 percent of the problem is the quarterback. And the other 30 percent is coaching which means play calling. Baker Mayfield be missing recivers wide open because he’s to short. Baker Mayfield is Garden Michew 2.0 they are the same quarterback. It’s time to move on from Baker Mayfield and Todd Bowles and Bowles fired himself by bringing Baker Mayfield to this team. Especially when Kyle Trask out played Baker Mayfield in Training camp and every one knows it including Joe.

First, you know this how given that Trask has not played with the starters in a game going on three seasons?

Second, Baker Bois – including you – have been trashing Trask all season so on what basis do you claim they will change?

Third, are you seriously claiming that if Trask was on a 1-6 losing streak and had a putrid .363 record you and all other Baker Bois would NOT be screaming for him to benched? Give me a break.

    a) you cannot throw the deep pass when your o-line gives you less than 3 seconds to throw

    b) you cannot throw at all when the WR’s are NOT getting separation (yes, I watched the all-22 — Literally NO ONE was open on the 6 sacks)

    c) The ONLY reason that the O-Line before yesterday was giving up few sacks is because Mayfield is houdini at ducking and escaping

    d) Trask was given the ball 2nd and goal from the 1/2 yard line – did NOTHING
