“Those Are Champagne Problems”

May 3rd, 2023

Bucs inside linebackers coach Larry Foote (left) talks about Devin White’s contract demands.

Joe applauds inside linebackers coach Larry Foote for acknowledging this afternoon the common man’s view of Devin White asking for a trade.

Foote chatted with media at One Buc Palace and was asked about White’s contract dispute with the Bucs that led him to request to be dealt out of town.

White has a guaranteed contract of $11 million for this season, the fifth-year option on his rookie deal. He wants an extension and a lot more money.

“Like I told him, he’s getting paid this year. Those are champagne problems,” Foote said. “I get it on both sides. He’s played a lot of ball. Does he need to be here this spring? We would love him to be here, but [absence] is not going to hurt him from the standpoint of playing. But I want him here and I’m quite sure that’s going to get worked out. But I understand both sides. It’s part of the business that nobody likes, but it is what it is.”

Foote added he doesn’t know when White will report for duty this season. He said he has talked to White about football-related things like fitness, film breakdowns, on-field goals, etc.

White will stay connected with the Bucs defense via technology, Foote said, if he doesn’t reports for spring duty.

Champagne problems… Like whether to get the case of Dom Perignon or Vueve Cliquot?! Glad Coach got it right. Stop complaining about being filthy rich when compared to the common man, with the near certainty that you’re about to sign another contract that will get you even filthier richer. Ffs…

Wants champagne tackles like Miller Light

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    Trade Diva!

  4. Dooley Says:

Need guys like Coach Foote on the squad, tell that young man his $$$ problem isn’t even a “real” problem, but going about it the way #45 did has now made Devin White the problem in the eyes of Bucs fans myself included. I just think Whites’ business reps should’ve been the ones to say what Coach Foote apparently had no problem saying and White could’ve just sat tight played for his $11mil and could’ve put him in position to demand w/e he wants. It’s going to suck for him next offseason(and probably cost him a few mil per yea), if he puts up lackluster film throughout 2023.

  5. D-Rok Says:

To get him to shut up and play, hopefully the Footester will put his foot up DW’s keester. You know, motivate him.

  6. robert Says:

“Foote added he doesn’t know when White will report for duty this season.”

if he doesn’t show he doesn’t go!

get ready. I bet he does not show…….then says blah, blah, brady did so i can too, blah, blah

he might be hurting himself at this point

  7. zzbuc Says:

I don’t understand White’s side to be honest with you.

Has has no leverage whatsoever, The Bucs control everything here, and this childish behavior will hurt his stock, he got to much exposed last year with the video and Sapp’s comments, because lack of effort, and that is something every team watches

He is just a good player, but he has flaws as we already know, the money he is asking for is delusional…..

  8. MadMax Says:

Dont need him, just cut his diva @ss….too bad we couldnt trade him during the draft.

He’s a whiny multi mill baby that doesnt want to be with us….get him the ef out….i hope he sits out and we dont pay him a penny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. CrackWise Says:

Meh, dude is really cool off the field. I would love to see him stay in Tampa and I have zero problem with millionaires demanding more money from the Billionaires who take us all to the woodshop every season in terms of sales.

Although, we the people control them both. If you don’t like them being so filthy rich. STOP WATCHING and better yet, STOP gambling on a RIGGED Sport.

    Just saying.

  10. MadMax Says:

Cant believe i pushed so hard for us to draft this drama queen

  11. Hail2dabucs Says:

This is a what have you done for me lately leauge ! If we are getting the 2020 playoff Devin white I’d say pay the man what he wants . In reality what we are getting is a guy that over runs plays , gets eaten alive when he can not shed blockers , has trouble in coverage and spots on the field to cover , lacks discipline & awareness. He has speed yes but it’s gonna take much more than that to get paid from the bucs . I would take 11 LD54’s before 100 DW’s .

  12. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

He’s already making more than Lavonte David this year and LVD is very than D White in every way. Even at 34 yrs old or however old he is.

Trade D White for a left or right tackle and be done with it!

  13. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

LVD is *better than Diva White

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

zzbuc says: I don’t understand White’s side to be honest with you.

White’s stats compare favorably with other top LB’s in the league- including Micah Parsons.
I agree with you that he has no leverage this year- and I agree with Foote when he says, “It’s part of the business that nobody likes, but it is what it is.”

  15. SB~LV Says:

Yawn… White has gotten over his skis
    Does he know that?
Probably not, he’s not too good at seeing things before they happen

  16. zzbuc Says:

    @Alanbucsfan

    With all due respect

White is very bad in coverage and is well documented ….I don’t think he is even close to Parsons, and if you add to that equation a lack of effort (sometimes), I wouldn’t pay him big money, and it looks Licht will not either.

And both things I mentioned you will not see them reflected on stats, stats is just a tool, is not always reflect everything is happening.

  17. Redeemer Says:

A position coach speaking out of turn. Larry should refer all questions to the front office, or the HC. They aren’t dealing him for pennies on the dollar. I’m sure they fielded calls, and they didn’t come close to what they wanted in return. I do have some serious questions about the tactics they’re using. If some team is stupid enough to give him 40 million in guarantees, they aren’t giving anything more than a third. My guess is they work out a long term. The time to deal him would’ve been at the draft. If they do plan on keeping him, the price will only go up. Vastly overrated player imo

  18. Joe Blow Says:

I sincerely hope Dennis shows out in camp, enough to not need White to even play.

  19. sasquatch Says:

Champagne problems indeed. When I hear a guy making 11 million dollars complain about his pay, it’s hard to have any sympathy. He hasn’t earned the 20 million a year that he wants. He’s not one of the best defensive players in the league. He just isn’t. Let him sit out, I don’t care. I’d prepare as if he wasn’t gonna come back. Eff that m0r0n.

  20. Biff Barker Says:

He came alive during the SB run but has been dead ever since.

    I wish him gone already.

I don’t understand White’s side to be honest with you.

White’s side is very simple……..Vea got paid….an extension with a big raise in his 5th year…….we didn’t have the money to do it for Goswin so we had to franchise him….
We may end up franchising White next year.

When you hear your coach claim you are the best or the second best player on the defense and it doesn’t come with money…..

I think White’s provlem is the public nature of his dispute…..it only hurts him and places a focus on everything he does……he’ll have to perform well to get his big paycheck whether it’s with the Bucs or not.

  22. SufferingSince76 Says:

As long as he gives full effort when he’s not bored.

  23. Pewter Power Says:

Yea he started living the champagne once he won a superbowl. He is definitely one of those guys being called out for living off the championship. There’s no other excuse for his play falling off. It’s like this guy is only hungry for money not hall of fame

  24. Redeemer Says:

He won’t take coaching!! How many times did we see the back of his uniform last year.

  25. Alanbucsfan Says:

    zzbuc-
White is fast and he’ll be motivated to get a big contract- I think he’ll have a great year this year, especially with the new talent on D- but I admit it’s risky to give him a big extension.

  26. Frank Pillow Says:

More $ will not make 45 more accountable.

  27. SlyPirate Says:

    BIGGEST CONCERN … THE DIVA

If he shows up out of shape, holds out, or becomes a social media distraction, then we got another AB. Punt.

  28. Tucker Says:

It’s a tactic some players use in negotiating a contract it’s whatever if Devin shows out this last year he will get paid and I want him on the team if not then peace out but I’m not going to get lost in feelings over it. Go bucs.

  29. Hodad Says:

Don’t remember his name, but he was a LB taken with the 8th pick in the draft by AZ, and they are not picking up his fifth year option. He was due in the range as White, and now he’s a FA with no 11 million. White has no choice but to play. Sitting out gains him nothing, he has no leverage, it’s the CBA. He needs to come in, ball out, than maybe he gets paid. Putting his cart before his horse.

  30. 1sparkybuc Says:

It’s my impression that White plays like crap when David is not out there with him. David will retire soon. White will be worthless when that happens. Dump White for whatever we can get, and make the transition to Ya Ya or whoever. White has become a team cancer. Let’s move on.

  31. NDOG is an Idiot Says:

No matter how well he plays this season, do NOT re sign White. Let him sign elsewhere

  32. Bojim Says:

He won’t have his heart in it if he stays.

  33. Dewey Selmon Says:

Hodad. It is Isaiah Simmons. He was doing excellent his first couple years. Not sure what happened. Maybe he wanted 100million?

  34. gotbbucs Says:

I could care less if he shows up for voluntary workouts. That just means someone else is getting those reps and hopefully getting better.

  35. Allbuccedup Says:

Should have traded him during the draft you won’t get anything for him after the season and if you tag him its going to cost you 21 mil. You have to pay Wirfs 18.5 mil 5th year option, Winfield 16 mil and White please too much money. You will have a multimillion dollar defense and no offense. Outdated thinking!

  36. MadMax Says:

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”….you trash us dw45 and you just treasured someone else’s opportunity who wants it more….

You owe us an apology before you even think you can come back to normal with us fans….wth were you thinking?!???!!!

  37. stpetebucfan Says:

Some of these players are rubbing our faces in it as bad as the Fox liars did to their rubes!

11 MILLION FREAKING $$$ ONE YEAR!!!

Not sure about the numbers online he reportedly makes 5 million a year.

HE DOES NOT NEED THIS MONEY!!! Should everybody be free to make as much as theyre worth? Absolutely! Is that market value…sure! But really the GREED and lack of life balance just disgusts me on a very human level.

I get that horses are expensive but if a guy can’t get by on a 25million $$ deal he’s either stooopid, greedy or both. It take money to make money for most folks. That means we all had to plan for our retirements with careful investments…IF we were well off enough to even have any money to invest.

I know I’m the exception. But I love teams with decent human beings. DW55 has crossed that line. Asking to be traded? Trade his arse! He’s already the beginning of a locker room cancer. NOT honoring your contract and then requesting a trade is just a form of blackmail. If he waited until after the season I would have viewed him as just another greedy arsehole…but putting the Bucs season in any kind of jeopardy with this kind of crap makes him a major LOSER!

How many discounts did the GOAT give the Patriots over the years. Does DW55 want to win or simply cash larger and larger and LARGER PAYCHECKS?

  38. Geo Says:

Hey my power bill is too high, any power company linemen wanna take a pay cut?

  39. CrackWise Says:

    stpetebucfan

So The Goat gives a “Discount” at 25-30 and is actually getting paid more than that this year and isnt even playing.

And your acting like a dude making 5-11 mill a year and wanting more is a problem.

    HMMMMMMMM, logic test anyone?

If yall don’t like knowing the numbers, stop looking at them. If yall want to get paid what they get paid. Do what they do.

IF yall don’t like athletes making more than teachers. Talk to your school board. BUT FOR THE LOVE OF FOOTBALL, stop acting like your a billionaire paying out MILLIONS of dollars to guys that allow the Billionaires to take advantage of you in the Box Office.

Only IDIOTS covet another man’s earning potential.

  40. CrackWise Says:

And by the way, none of you know Mr. White personally. EVERYTHING we have seen and know of him off the field SCREAMS class act.

You people crying over spilled milk are the problem. This is why players and coaches don’t like dealing with the public. You literally are all attacking a man at his JOB.

Now, if you want to attack someone, attack the owners or even the league for creating this environment that apparently offends you all when you find out how much money they make. Good Grief, yall are the real losers.

  41. CrackWise Says:

I will agree, White is not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to Public Relations. This is where he could have really learned from LVD and just kept his mouth shut.

I do say that about players all the time. Just shut up and do your job. So, in that respect, he has earned some of his criticism. The market will determine his value and there is no shame in a man valuing himself as high as the moon. Heck, I always try to get the most money I can out of every contract I sign. Sometimes I am told to kick rocks and other times the money hits the bank account before the ink is even dry.

Grow up children. Contracts are not what entertains us on Game Day!!!

  42. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

  43. TonySoprano Says:

So, Crackpipe, in 3 posts you’ve called fellow readers idiots, losers and children. Ironically, you write like an idiot/child. Sorry, Mrs. White, but the truth is your son is arrogant, dim and clearly has zero self-awareness. Why don’t you do the rest of this site a favor and sit the season out.

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

Horses. A horse is a horse of course of course. Mr. Ed would probably tackle better and cover better than fraud Diva.

  45. CrackWise Says:

Hmmmm, reading and comprehending is a struggle for most people these days isn’t it TonySoprano.

I called no one specifically any names. Just applying the words that have been against White properly.

Now you are bringing the man’s mother into the arena, that to me fits the definition of an idiot. If that offends you, WEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL.

  46. Coburn Says:

Yup give average joe his salary this year and he can retire comfortably, put his kids through school, buy then their first house, and still have enough to set them up well for when you’re gone.

  47. CrackWise Says:

    been *used* against White

Figured I should fix that for the grammar police who think talking smack about how someone writes on a sports blog is the cool thing to do.

  48. CrackWise Says:

GIVE???? That is where you are missing the mark, Coburn.

NO ONE IS GIVING these guys anything. Accept the FANS because we give them our attention and money. Even then, that money goes to the OWNERS and who are we to blame the PLAYERS for wanting MORE of what the FANS GIVE THEM!!!

    THEY HAVE EARNED IT

  49. CrackWise Says:

Yall need to take a lesson from Goatfarmer on how to PROPERLY talk smack about a player.

    He won’t take coaching!!

This is my biggest issue with White, as yourself or someone else stated recently: He’s similar to Jamie Collins.

  51. EEK Says:

Not sure I love the messaging from the coach

Maybe it would be better to keep the messaging subdued and not label the perspective as “champagne problems”.

Bowles isn’t necessarily building trust with his players saying this stuff openly.

White may have been the captain of the D last year so I don’t think he’s a hated player that everyone wants to leave.

This type of quote may be a bit of a window into how things go at One Buc.

  52. Steven007 Says:

Crack, he signed a contract that he has not outperformed. Simple as that. I know the whole contract thing doesn’t seem to mean anything anymore. But yes, he’s getting paid 11 mil for his troubles this season. With almost guaranteed 70 plus on his next deal wherever he lands. Let’s be realistic man.

  53. J Says:

Stpetebucan, if you’re so concerned about politics maybe find another team to route for, because right now you’re a fan to one of the most conservative owners in the NFL, LOL.

  54. Pewter Power Says:

SirVocea Dennis Is going to end up taking whites job if not this year next year when he goes to free agency and realizes that absolutely no one will pay the money he wants

  55. Geno711 Says:

    ^^^

Did not understand your reference “J”

  56. ABucAway Says:

Larry Foote just became one of my favorite Buc coaches. Wrap that statement up and put a pewter bow on it. Theres a gift for Deven to find some perspective going into this year. He is still on a team and under contract to play. The champagne will flow on the other side of a strong 2023.
Joes I really wish I could cuss here for emphasis because I just can’t believe people are ok with this behavior. It’s bad for moral and any contract he signed has been approved by the NFL and the Players association. He signed the contract. No one twisted his arm and this is the progression of payment for services rendered that every drafted player goes through. You want more money?? Waaahhh mofo waaaahhh. Fulfill your end of the agreement. Or better yet take your uncoachable, prickly, diva arse to the xfl.
If he doesn’t show up and fulfill his agreement, id rank his career to the best of my billion dollar ability. But that’s just me.

  57. ABucAway Says:

    Tank*

  58. NEfan Says:

Crackhead, Brady is getting paid because he extended his contract to open up cap space for additional players. This is how Bucs won a SB, idiot. By the way the extension bit him in the arse in 2021 when the Bucs refused to let him leave. What goes around comes around.

  59. Miller5252 Says:

The bad thing is taking a chance on White and paying him if he does have good to great year. If you move Wirfs to LT he’s gonna want LT money. You have Winfield next year to pay and if Baker has a good year, you’ve got starting QB money that’s gonna need paid. Even if Baker is crap, you may be paying a lot of money for a FA QB if you don’t want a rookie. You still might be able to get something for White before the trade deadline if a team wants him for a run, but you got some money crunch coming for possible good players you want to keep. I also think it’s gonna depend on if Bowles is the coach as well. If the team sucks by October, a new staff will come in and then they’ll get a say in it all. A lot of ifs coming up. But with the all time great David coming to the end, a decision needs to happen and a captain needs to fill the role.

  60. ABucAway Says:

Those are all good points Miller. Everyone involved has to work within the monetary constraints as agreed to by the NFL, the owners, and the NFLPA. There is a budget, and while has loopholes to play through and around, all teams have a predetermined amount to spend on salaries. This year, the Diva budget is set @ 12,000,000 dollars. Diva needs to just stfu, fire his agent, and play with his on fire this year. That’s is what is in everyone’s best interest, including his.

  61. ABucAway Says:

Anyway, it’ll work itself out, one way or another. It always does. I just hope it lands on what’s best for the team. Go Bucs!
