Jason Licht Explains Cody Mauch Pick

May 3rd, 2023

Bucs rookie guard Cody Mauch.

It’s rare to hear a general manager note how he thinks a rookie will raise the games of the players around him.

That’s sort of where Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht went yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

The Bucs traded up in Round 2 of the NFL Draft last week to grab North Dakota State tackle Cody Mauch, who is projected to take a guard spot on the Bucs’ offensive line.

Licht said the Mauch pick was about more than just film and work ethic. He sees Mauch as a player in the Ryan Jensen mold who will uplift teammates.

“Cody was a player that we just all fell in love with watching the tape,” Licht begain. “I mean, of course, he’s a great athlete; he’s got elite quickness and strong hands, intelligent player. But he just loves to play. And it just bleeds into everybody else on that offensive line. And we saw here how that change in our mentality of our offensive line when Ryan came on board and just his mentality. We missed that [last year], not that the other guys didn’t play hard, they did. But Ryan just kind of takes it to another level and we feel Cody is in that same category.”

Interesting to hear Licht verbalize how Jensen’s presence was missed last season — beyond the Xs and Os. So Tom Brady couldn’t fire up the troops without Jensen?

Regardless, that’s very high praise from Licht regarding Mauch’s intangibles. And it’s damn exciting when Joe considers Jensen is still on the team.

My opinion is that the center and two guards last year were just horrible at imposing their will on 3rd and short yardage. Guys just could not get the job done.

If we just completed 10% more drives on 3rd and shorts, the team will be better. If we complete 20% more drives on 3rd and short, we will be way better.

  2. CrackWise Says:

Clearly Jason is acknowledging the gap in the OL he created when he cut Donnie.

  3. SB~LV Says:

I can see a lot of blacked out front teeth in the stands next fall 🤠

  4. SB~LV Says:

It seems “black “ is a algorithm prepost moderation word, maybe with the speed of AI context can be incorporated in the screening

  5. Buc1987 Says:

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth…

  6. Redeemer Says:

Scares me when GMs fall in love with a player. Hope the kid does well. He looks like he has all the tools. Same thing was said about the guard we drafted last year.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe…..have you noticed that Licht almost always trades up for his Olinemen……He did it with Mauch, Wirfs, Marpet, Cappa & Goedeke…… just a coincidence or by design?

I suspect that he’s so passionate about that position that he gets nervous and feels compelled to trade up.

  8. MadMax Says:

You need guys like that who are fun and just have that little boy gleam still in their adult eyes (you can see that with him)….they love the game and go 100 and love doing it even when they’re tired. And he’s got size and skills. I didnt watch much on him for some reason (working 54 hrs a week) but he did catch my attention. I thought he would go 4th or 5th, but what do I know, im no pro at this….

Love the pick…Great job Mr. Licht!!!!

  9. MadMax Says:

@Tbbf, I knew we would have to trade up for Marpet and was surprised Wirfs was still there and Mr. Lynch did us a solid with that favor….

  10. Dooley Says:

It’s because Cody Mauch is Jason Lichts’ “type” lol

  11. VATom Says:

There is no conspiracy of guys not responding to Brady. We lost Jensen, Ali and Cappa. That is a HUGE turnover. Went to a very inexperienced line AND Brady looked (understandably) skittish. Dude didn’t want to have to use a walker to chase his daughter’s kitten around the mansion. So it was a tough yr. Now, HOPEFULLY, we are seeing the foundation to build the next 3-5 yrs on.

  12. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Licht passes up players that are needed like a LT for “his guys” I hope Mauch is good enough to start, licht has been drafting slugs on the OL as of late. The NFC South has improved tremendously through FA and the draft. The Falcons are the only question mark but they want to run the ball and they did that at will last year against the bucs and they got a dude now. 8-9 licht

  13. SlyPirate Says:

    NOT SOLD ON OUR OL
    LT- Wirfs
    LG – Mauch
    C – Jensen
    RG – Hainsey
    RT – Goedeke

That whole right side is suspect. I don’t trust Hainsey at RG. He gets no push.

  14. Dooley Says:

Dude, it’s only May and partly the reason Lichts’ been jokingly sayin “we don’t have a game tomorrow” on more than one occasion this offseason. The only significant developments happening in May are acquiring talent, assessing talent, and player development. We got a long way to go.

  15. David Says:

I love this pick because at center and guards you need beasts that play nasty and hard and physical and that was gone last year

  16. gotbbucs Says:

Offensive linemen are just a different breed, and you almost have to be an offensive lineman to understand it.

  17. SB~LV Says:

I can see him doing dental implant advertising, just not yet but when I do, I’ll be sure to use so and so 🦷

  18. zzbuc Says:

Hard not to like this guy…..
    Fan’s loving guy for sure…….

  19. CrackWise Says:

    SlyPirate

You’re forgetting the Monster we got from Seattle. I don’t blame you, I forgot his name too. However, if memory serves, he is a starter on the OL this year.

  20. gbobucsfan Says:

Does any other OL in the league have 2 gingers? Power of the uglies!

  21. firethecannons Says:

Hainsey performed admirably but it is not what Bucs want. Hope Jensen is able to hold up till next years draft, we will need to get a new center next year.

  22. Lamarcus Says:

He’s alright. But I think Licht is chasing the Marpet pick If theres a oline player at some small school who dominates…. Licht is gonna pick him!!!

  23. Infomeplease Says:

Sly Pirate. That would be Matt Feiler plays left guard

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

Imagine the violent double team of Jensen and Mauch lol. Get wrecked

  25. Nprbuc Says:

Look up “Cody Mauch Was a O-Star Recruit” Fun read with some good info. Love the pick!

  26. Brian Says:

So is he gonna be a guard or a tackle!

  27. D-Rok Says:

I just heard on Movin’ The Chains that the Packers REALLY wanted Cody. Glad we got him, now let the NFL training begin!

  28. Buddha Says:

I said that the day he was injured. That was the day I decided to wager big on Buccaneers UNDER 11.

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mauch caught 13 TDs as a TE in high school & set a school record……we need to design some pass plays for him……

  30. Destinjohnny Says:

    Great athlete, really fluid mover
    Can he play inside ??
I don’t see it, he isn’t that thick.
He is already 24 I think
I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think he is strong enough.

  31. Voice of Truth Says:

I think it looks like this and it is a good run blocking group – not sure this is a pocket passer’s preference but all indications are this is a mobile qb friendly scheme now, with zone blocking in the run game

    LT – Wirfs
    LG – Mauch
    C – Jensen
    RG – Feiler
    RT – Goedke

With Hainsey, Stinnie and Leverett, Walton in reserve

  32. TBSwarm Says:

Looks like Donnie got picked up by the Chiefs on a one year deal

  33. Pablocruise Says:

From what I’ve heard with the new OC there may be more moving along the line to create space than in years before. He goes by the mantra of show em 1 look and run all plays out of it, which is great cause it keeps the D guessing. Also the line is healthy or will be than last year so it HAS to be better, fingers crossed. I like the attitude he talks about cause you need nasty on both sides of the ball. I do love the new Guard from Seattle. Also, Light is smart cause he hears footsteps of others to move up in the draft for players he wants. The rookie and center last year were thrown to the wolves out of nessescity, I believe Godeke will be better because of that and moved to a better position, not everyone can change positions like that especially 1st year in the pro’s.

  34. westernbuc Says:

We lost a serious emotional leader in Jensen last year. He needs an understudy

  35. Stanglassman Says:

What OL starter from Seattle did we get? I thought I followed the news pretty closely. Are you talking about Feiler? He played G for LA Chargers last year and T for the Steelers for about 5 seasons.

    I thought the same thing.
Mr Canales please dial that up at some point this year.
Hehe and maybe with a play action fake to Vea!

  37. garro Says:

    I love that Jenson said… and I’m sure I am paraphrasing…we’re gonna !@#$ some %^&* up!
