No Go For Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

May 27th, 2023

Unfortunate reality.

The Bucs picked up the fifth-year option for tackle Tristan Wirfs. No brainer, right?

Well, unless something changes drastically, next year’s decision on a fifth-year option should be equally easy to make. And Joe sure hopes that drastic change arises.

Looking ahead to next May, Matt Verderame of SI.com looked at all the 2021 first-round draft picks, the group eligible to have their fifth-year option picked up. When it comes to Bucs outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Verderame types. it’s no go, Joe.

With Pierre-Paul gone last year, Tryon-Shoyinka had an opportunity to prove his worth but ultimately totaled only four sacks with six tackles for loss. It’s not enough to earn a fifth year in Tampa Bay.

This could change if JTS blows up this fall, becomes an absolute terror and gets 10 or more sacks. But yeah, Verderame is correct. As it stands now, no way JTS should have his fifth-year option activated. That number would be at least $12 million for the 2025 season.

Here’s to hoping year 3 is his time to shine and put it all together. He’s a great athlete.

  2. FrontFour Says:

It would be best for us if JTS did have a breakout year and earned his 5th year. I’m not betting he will.

  3. lobsterman Says:

I would like to know the 5th-year retention rate for ALL first round picks. I know that for first round QBs it is very low, like 35% or so.

  4. BigMacAttack Says:

The sack line for him is 2 and I’m taking the under

  5. BigMacAttack Says:

The real question here is will BestBuy making cut his hair. That mop isn’t working JTS.

  6. Mike Says:

JTS is going to have a really good year. If Kancey and Vea can push the pocket, the QB is going to get swallowed up by the outside rush, meaning JTS is going to clean up.

  7. Jason Says:

If JTS gets his option picked up, that means he got double digit sacks and we made the playoffs. I actually have that as my “X Factor” for the season.

  8. Destinjohnny Says:

    Bust

  9. realistic-optimistic Says:

I’m not convinced he needs double-digit sacks to have the option exercised. People around here see Shaq as a beast edge rusher, but he’s basically a 7-10 sacks per year guy. All JTS has to do is hit 7-8, have a decent pressure rate, and play well against the run. If he does that I’d bet Licht keeps him around for further development.

Remember he only played one full season in college and missed a year before being drafted. He was a traits prospect, and everybody knew development was needed.

  10. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

I see what Jason Licht was trying to do with the JTS and Logan Hall draft picks…

Now It’s time to take the the training wheels off and see if they can keep things moving without crashing into the mailbox…

  11. HC Grover Says:

    He is the weak link.

  12. Mort Says:

A big fan of premature speculation I see.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

Eight sacks in 2023 will get JTS that 5th year option. I believe he can accomplish that if he can just turn a few of those QB pressures into QB sacks.

  14. kyle Says:

    bust

  15. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I haven’t seen anything from JTS that says he’s worth $12million a year. Maybe this year he puts it all together. I hope does.

  16. MattY iCe Says:

Joe tryon I had some high hopes for, but this guys just wasting everyone’s time. Put up or shut up time this is football. Hit someone. That’s what you got brought in. Tampa is in trouble. I truly believe that. Devin white can’t defend the pass. Hopefully they move him to OLB already and just rush him on passing downs. Also with how young, inexperienced, and small our DL is I don’t have any faith they’ll be getting it done.

  17. ThatAintRight Says:

Not only can Joe Tryon not get to the QB, not only can White not defend on 3rd down, not only is our line small and inexperienced, but we also do not have a slot CB, LVD who I think we all love is quite seasoned. Even our Oline is questionable . Besides Wirfs, and Ryan Jensen we have a lot of question marks. Nothing for sure. RB more question marks. Lot of talk no actions. Im not buying what they’re selling no way. If they can get a slot CB as well as a new pass coverage ILB then I will watch if not I am not going out of my way to see them play this year.

  18. bucsfaninOregon Says:

JTS is a one-trick pony! Unfortunately that trick is to rush like hell on the outside and allow the O-lineman to push him right on out of the play. That’s his trick.

    And, Logan who?

Drafts like this will eventually get Licht fired.

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

    A weakling, a tweener, a midget.
Not the rebuild we had in mind.
If we are counting on JTS, somebody better drop a radioactive spider on him.
    Meybe some gamma rays.
    Otherwise- I doubt it

  20. 1#bucsfan Says:

He’s really gotta blow up this year or he’s most likely getting the busy label usually it’s a 3 season process to evaluate a player. Anything before is none sense and maybe he needs an extra year since he skipped out the covid season in college. Who knows but I for one and rooting for him to kill it this year n hall and kancey that would be a very scary defense y’all. Wishful thinking tho

  21. Oviedo Jim Says:

He’s a bad player and there is no need to keep taking about him.

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

Licht should be picking only offensive lineman let someone else pick the other positions.

  23. Fred McNeil Says:

I think JTS will get at least 8 sacks and a good bunch of pressures this year

  24. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I agree, Jill is a bust.

  25. Nybuccguy Says:

I’d rather pay JTS 12 million than pay Devin White 20

  26. Hal Says:

Gaines Adams 2.0. An outside rush easily handled by an opponents DT is all he has.

  27. J Says:

I hope he improves, but I believe JTS will continue to overrun his targets.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’ve heard he has stepped things up this year. The third year is when players usually show their worth. I am not willing to consider him a bust…yet.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Licht should be picking only offensive lineman let someone else pick the other positions.”

You don’t think Bowles had a say in the pick? Or Arians?

  30. optimisticbucsfan Says:

We need a big year from him. If he has one, he will get paid.

    If not? He won’t.

  31. optimisticbucsfan Says:

I am unsure why all my comments are in moderation.

I haven’t said anything remotely controversial.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

The kid, who was ultra green coming out of college, and sat out a year, has 8 sacks over his first two years. That’s not terrible. His issue just seems to be wrapping up the QB, and that is fixable. People are acting like he’s a bust, but he’s not, he’s just isn’t a good player yet. I’m thinking he might end up being a decent player still.

  33. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has speed, some moves but no power. Unless he bulks up this year, I doubt he cracks more than 6 sacks.

  34. TF Says:

It’s hard to put an actual sack total that he should hit to earn the option. Does he get a pass for last year because it seems like EVERY defender really was ordinary at BEST? But let’s face it, most of our young up front lineman and linebackers underperformed tremendously as a unit and our Defense was an unbelievable disappointment. One thing is certain, he is playing for his career. If You can’t make it on statistically one of the worst defenses then your career is on life support.

  35. realistic-optimistic Says:

If You can’t make it on statistically one of the worst defenses then your career is on life support.

Hold on now. Did you even look at league stats before making this statement?

The Bucs defensive rankings last year:
    > Total Yards Allowed: 10th-T
    > Passing Yards Allowed: 10th
    > Rushing Yards Allowed: 15th
    > Total Points Allowed: 13th
    > Takeaways: 20th-T

They withered a little down the stretch, but the defense is the reason that putrid offense got a playoff game.

  36. FlBoy84 Says:

For some reason the guy has always struck me as being satisfied just being in the NFL as opposed to making an impact.

  37. David Says:

He needs to be consistently getting pressure and have 10 sacks. If that doesn’t happen, he’s gone and it’s Ya Ya’s time

  38. mark2001 Says:

Well, at least he has a Defensive HC. So no excuses.

  39. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

THIS GUY FLAT OUT SUCKS !..UNLOAD HIM & GIVE RUSSELL GAGE AN INJURY SETTLEMENT & UNLOAD THEM BOTH TO SIGN DEANDRE HOPKINS TO A 3 YEAR DEAL !, ALONG WITH TREY PALMER OUR BIG FOUR WOULD BE SET..(OF COURSE RESIGNING MIKE EVANS WOULD BE A MUST IN THE OFF-SEASON TOO ) ! DO YOUR BEST CAP FINAGGLING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN IF HE WILL JOIN US..IT’S CERTAINLY WORTH A TRY !..DON’T YOU THINK ?..WE CERTAINLY DON’T WANT THE CHIEFS, BILLS,EAGLES OR ANY ONE ELSE TO GET HIM..RUSSELL GAGE IS BECOMING A LIABILITY TO THE TEAM MORE SO THAN AN ASSET..

  40. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

JOE TRYON COULDN’T WEAR JPP’S JOCK STRAP FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN OF HIS PRODUCTION SO FAR EITHER !

  41. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

AND IF DEVIN WHITE CAN’T GET HIS HEAD OUT OF HIS BEHIND & JUST PLAY BALL THIS YEAR WITHOUT HOLDING OUT, TRADE HIS ASS TO WHOEVER WANTS TO GIVE UP A 1ST ROUND PICK IN NEXT YEARS DRAFT ! ! !

  42. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

AND IF DEVIN WHITE TRYS TO PULL ANY HOLDOUT OF ANY KIND THIS SEASON, SHIP HIM OFF FOR WHOMEVER IS WILLING TO GIVE US A 1ST ROUND PICK IN THE 2024 DRAFT FOR HIM & LET HIM GO..SIRVOCIA DENNIS CAN TAKE OVER HIS SPOT JUST FINE AS A ROOKIE ! ! !

  43. Swampy Says:

Sacks is an important number but so is hurries. If an edge rusher can disrupt the timing on pass plays he’s valuable. I’m sure the people who grade the players consider a deliberate throw out of bounds a win for the player who forced it.

  44. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Mort ” I don’t think you know the meaning of that word”
    ROFLMAO!!!!

  45. Mike S Says:

The guy is a bust. That’s why they drafted two edge rushers.

  46. Mike S Says:

TOMMY MORDUE NOBODY IS GOING TO COUGH UP A 1ST ROUND PICK FOR WHITE.

YOU MIGHT GET A 2ND OUT OF THE COWBOYS
