Can Bucs Punter Jake Camarda Repeat Week 1?

September 18th, 2022

Two-for-two to begin career?

Time will tell if Bucs punter Jake Camarda will be remembered like Ray Guy.

No, Joe isn’t talking about the rookie punter becoming a Hall of Famer. The odds of that happening are pretty astronomical since Guy, the former Raiders punter, is the only one in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (unless you want to count Sammy Baugh, who made it as a quarterback but also was a punter.).

Outside of Guy somehow catching a wild snap in a Super Bowl, the only other single play he’s remembered for is hitting the scoreboard in the Superdome in a Pro Bowl.

It didn’t take long for Camarda to match Guy’s feat. Camarda, per Dallas beat writers in the press box last week at Jerry’s World, became the first punter in a regular season game to hit the famous 53-yard long scoreboard — 90 feet above the field.

The late John Clayton wrote for BSPN back in 2009 that every visiting punter has been able to clip that scoreboard in warmups. Still, Camarda was the first to do it in a regular season game.

Camarda was drafted largely because of his hang time. While booming a punt 60 or 70 yards is nice, often outkicking your coverage will do more damage to a punt return team. A shorter punt enables gunners to cover and force a return man to fair catch. The goal, of course, the almighty turnover. We all know how addicted NFL folks are to turnovers.

“I just do whatever I have to do to make it easier for our guys to cover,” Camarda told Joe last week after the season-opener.

As for making it two weeks in a row hitting a scoreboard in a dome, it’s not like Camarda hasn’t played in the Superdome. But he told Joe he didn’t remember if he has ever hit the Superdome’s scoreboard.

The way Joe sees it, if the Bucs were aiming for hang time in drafting Camarda in the fourth round, they succeeded.

Of course, Joe is old school when it comes to punting. Kick the damn thing out of bounds and you’ll never have to worry.

This Joe sounds just like Ira. I love those super high kicks. By the time it comes down and they don’t fair-catch it there are tons of Bucs just waiting. I think one got returned for 3 yards in the Dallas game. I sure would like to see more of that.
I must say that I didn’t see a pic of Scotty getting on the plane. I would have loved to see him on the field.

I assumed he’d pay with Godwin out

I hope he learns to accelerate his punting process, he was millimeters close to having one blocked and you know the Aints took notice of that in their week of prep.
