Is Chris Godwin Playing Hardball With The Bucs?

March 8th, 2022

Leverage.

This is a very interesting thought process. And if accurate, Chris Godwin’s camp is playing this perfectly.

As Joe has read from several reports, the Bucs and Godwin are trying to hammer out a long-term deal to keep Godwin with the Bucs for years. Of course, nearly two hours before the deadline, perhaps Godwin doesn’t want to sign a long-term deal. This year.

Timo Riske of the PFF tribe put out an interesting Twitter. Godwin’s camp knows how much the Bucs want him back. It is unlikely due to his injury and subsequent knee surgery, Godwin would land some $20 million this year on the market. The best way to get that cash? Make the Bucs tag you (again).

So if Godwin comes back 100 percent healthy, he hits the free agent market again next year, still in the prime of his career. And we all know player salaries never go down for dudes in their prime. So Godwin, in addition to pulling in a fat check this year, will be at the top of the market next year provided he’s healthy.

Savvy move by Godwin. In some circles, it is called betting on yourself. Just don’t do that on a temporarily legal mobile wagering app in South Florida. Right Calvin Ridley?

    That and a
    Buddy made a good point

Maybe its godwin. And he wont jump into long term contract until the qb situation is resolved. He might not want a trask/ blame gabbert future of his glory years

  2. Bird Says:

    Russel wilson to broncos.

  3. Miller5252 Says:

Russ to Denver…. Should have been coming to Tampa!

  4. adrnagy Says:

Mike williams WR chargers 3yrs $60m. Godwin might be shooting for alot more.

  5. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Touché’ on the Ridley Joe.
    Well done.

  6. Itsgoodtobetheking Says:

Sign a deal that either side can void after year 1. If Godwin has a great year he can void it and hit FA again. If he has a bad one the team can decide to void it. Each side would have to sacrifice in the short term.

  7. HC Grover Says:

To get Brady back gotta keep the line and playoff Lenny. Add somebody to replace Marpet.

  8. zzbuc Says:

    @Miller5252….
There was never a chance……What did Bucs had to offer? a 27 pick on this draft, and what else?

We never had a real chance neither Wilson nor Rodgers

  9. Buczilla Says:

Golf clap for Godwin’s savviness. If this is true, he’s screwing the team and the fans with his greed (I know most of the owners are scum, and the cap is bs, but I’m p!ssed). I hope the only reason he gets tagged, if he gets tagged, is to trade him. Licht can’t be this stupid can he?!? He’s become an excellent gm during his time here but what a blockhead move this would be. If Godwin gets tagged and we don’t trade him, I’m jumping on the doorknob patriots fans bandwagon that rips the coaching staff and Licht constantly. 🙃

  10. DBS Says:

It also gives him a year to see what this team looks like. Next year BA gone? Team looks bad he wants out. Wants to go to a winner. Good move.

  11. Gbobucsfan Says:

Then let’s pay him for one year and tag Jensen.

  12. Its a Bucs Life Says:

When your Head Coach fawns over the player publicly daily your team loses leverage. BA is a good sound bite for the media but awful at helping the team in contract negotiations.

It’d be nice to have a coach who could outscheme other teams

  13. Miller5252 Says:

@zzbuc why does it have to be our first round pick? They could have sent some players and picks to secure Wilson. We’ve seen what a good QB can do in 1 season…. Could have had another one nailed down for 5-7 years. One ready to win now.

  14. Beejezus-belt Says:

Not sure it’s good business to franchise tag a guy for half season. Sure sounds like he definitely would be playing Jason Licht and BA. If he won’t sign, let him walk.

  15. SB~LV Says:

Fighting has hard for his contract as he does for a ball on the field!
    Bizness is bizness
The band has left the stage

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This same thing happened last year & we were forced to tag him…….make him a good offer & let him walk if he doesn’t cooperate……really want & like Godwin but you’ve got to draw the line.

A 2nd tag with it’s 20% penalty is too much for an unknown (injured player) that won’t be there for the entire season.

  17. Robert Says:

tbbf…..I think thats the best post you have ever made! kuydos my man.

  18. Winny Testaverde Says:

$20 million for a rehab stint reeks of Revis Rehab ™️ situation. Godwin was great…Licht may be holding on extra tight ( like Joe’s jean shorts ) as he was one of his best draft picks. Bucs acting a bit like Kanye aka Ye trying to win back The Kartrashian gal in hopes Brady will change his mind. He won’t…at least about the Bucs.

  19. Alanbucsfan Says:

And if the Bucs don’t sign Godwin, the Dolphins are ready to pounce…

Mike Williams is about 1/10th the player that Godwin is, he had one good season last year after looking like a bust the rest of his career. That deal is hilarious and is going to look awful by game 8 of next season, when he’s on pace for 700 yards and 3 TDs on the year, everyone is going to be asking what’s wrong with him.

  21. SlyPirate Says:

This is simple: Licht got played.

I guaranty he already has buyer’s remorse.

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan
That was a great post, and I agree 110%
We should have let him test the waters because no other team is gonna pay that much for an injured player.

  23. Stanglassman Says:

Some people are blaming the 20m/y with 40G Mike Williams contract. They think it blew up the Godwin negotiations.

  24. Bucsfan4ever Says:

NFLPA should really step in on this era where qb gets 20% of the available cap (kaaron and mahomes get almost 30%)
Every team seems to have a few other players hitting that 20% threshold.
Stars deserve more than jagsb but learn to share.

  25. Bucsfan4ever Says:

    I meant 10% of cap

  26. Bucsfan4ever Says:

One team should experiment with using a more sharing team building model.

  27. Buccfan37 Says:

Sports betting in Florida ain’t likely to happen. The Florida Lottery cash inflow is obviously way down the past few years. One out of thousands gets their money back on that swindle. Blame it on these corrupt GOP governors Scott, DeSantis, what a pile of crap.
