Rondé Barber: Bucs Won’t Match What Market Will Throw At Carlton Davis

March 8th, 2022

Carlton Davis

This is very intriguing for two main reasons: Rondé Barber’s very close ties inside One Buc Palace and how firm he was in his take.

Barber spoke today on WDAE radio. The subject of Buccaneers pending free agent and No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis came up and Barber was not only down on the Bucs being able to re-sign him, Barber was very confident Davis will indeed hit the market.

Knowing how deeply embedded Barber is with Tampa Bay’s power players, Joe now considers Davis a goner.

“Carlton, when I watch film, he is one of the better press-man corners in the league. What doesn’t impress you is production in terms of takeaways, but his skill on the outside is as good as anybody in football. A lot of people look at me crazy when I say that. But the reality is the guy can take away a No. 1 receiver. And that’s what this league looks for in that position,” Barber said. “So I anticipate him, when he hits the open market, when people start, you know, throwing numbers around at Carlton, it’s going to be hard to keep him. Especially because we’re not in cap hell but we’re pushed up against the top of our cap. I don’t think we’ll be able to match what somebody’s going to throw at him.”

Anyone up for Patrick Peterson and a rookie cornerback to fill the void?

  1. tampabuscsbro Says:

Joe thinks we can afford Peterson.

  2. uhmmm Says:

Peterson will definitely command less than Davis, so the Bucs should be able to afford him

  3. Marine Buc Says:

    I agree with Ronde…

We need to find a solid free agent vet for @ $8-$10M per and then draft a CB in round #1 or #2.

    CB1 – solid vet FA
    CB2 – C. Dean
    CB3 – 1st round pick
    CB4 – SMB
    CB5 – Cockrell
    CB6 – Delaney/Robinson

  4. Killian Says:

Davis was mediocre at best. Next!

  5. Marine Buc Says:

    ooops…

    J. Dean not C. Dean.

  6. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Nah…..

    I’m on Miko-Watch.

  7. Steven007 Says:

Marine, that’s a decent and doable corner depth chart. I’m intrigued by the idea of picking a corner with our first pick since it seems to be a decent draft for them. O line as well. And also d-line frankly. I think we’ll let the board come to us and pick the best player. Of course free agency will shade that a bit as always.

  8. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Let Davis go; he will do as many bucs FAs do when they leave here: horrible.

  9. Ash Says:

What a mistake. Pretty sure I’m in the minority Davis is really good and good cbs are almost as hard to find as good qbs and typically they don’t get to see the market once they are found.

  10. Buczilla Says:

Hell yes to the last sentence! Overpaying for good, not great players is a sure way to ruin your team.

  11. zzbuc Says:

    Overall ….average at best……

  12. huh Says:

Carlton is hurt too much to be paid and relied on as a #1 CB. I think it might be smart for the Bucs to lock him up now though, because Carlton will be a bargain at 20m/yr in a few years from now. Remember when the Bucs paid Revis 16m to rehab a year

  13. Mort Says:

Peterson doesn’t have gas left in the tank. He sure was good in his prime, but this ain’t it.

  14. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Steven

We also need a real WR3. I initially wanted to draft a WR with our first pick even if Godwin returns.

But at this point I say draft best player available – CB, WR, DL, OLB, OG/C, RB.

We have so many holes to fill it could be just about any position.

  15. Robert Says:

let the number 1 CB walk and sign our #2 wr with major knee surgery and ???.

WTF …..is brandon running the ship?

  16. Smashsquatch Says:

He’s gone. Too many other needs to address. Draft another Ronde and spend your money on a dominant front four. Best of luck to you Carlton, thank you for your service!

  17. Steven007 Says:

Marine, I’m certain we’ll pick a WR too. Fairly deep in the draft there as well. Wish we had an additional pick since the draft is deep at a few of the positions we need depth at.

  18. Francisco Guzman Says:

Russell Wilson going to denver!!!! Brady retired at the wrong time!!!’ He has to come back.

  19. adam from ny Says:

    he’ll get about 4 years 65 mil out there…

    we’ll be offering 4 years 50 mil

  20. Francisco Guzman Says:

Think about the nfc QBs right now. I mean seriously. Russell Wilson just left the nfc.

  21. HC Grover Says:

Draft all SEC from Ole Miss, Alabama, and Georgia. Can’t miss. BA will begone in 23 and we will have a solid base for the new coaches. 22 is about a write off now it seems. A good year to check out Trask. He needs experience.

  22. Steven007 Says:

Rodgers to Denver was the call all along. Interesting to see Wilson go there.

  23. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Davis is only one half of a good corner. He either can’t or won’t tackle.

  24. BradyBucs Says:

If someone signs Davis can we throw in Dean and SMB as a free bonus to take with them?

  25. tampabayallday Says:

Let him walk, he could never finish the deal when it came to INT’s. He’s no Jalen Ramsay.

  26. Ed Says:

Should have put him on Cooper Cupp in the playoffs then.

  27. Irishmist Says:

I’d rather lose Jenson and keep Davis. Jenson is 31 and we have Hainsey to replace him. Davis is 25 and our only replacement for him is a bottle of cologne.

  28. Beej Says:

Davis is a B cb wanting A money

“The former second-round pick has battled injuries in each of his four seasons with the Bucs and has yet to play every game in an entire season. Davis has missed a total of 14 games, including seven last year with a quad injury. Davis also has just six interceptions in four seasons. He recorded his first career interception at the end of his second year. He then posted four in 2020 while helping the Bucs win Super Bowl LV. Last year he had just one interception in 12 games, including two playoff games. Davis dropped several other picks.”

He’s the best on our team, but he’s not Jalen Ramsey

  29. Austin Says:

IDK why yall hate CDIII, He follows teams best recievers and shuts them down. Remember when we were all praying for him to come back last year??

  30. scottiebudseed Says:

Davis will be a top 5 corner in a few years but the half ass football
fans that call tampa home will never know. Tampa is full of fair weather fans that act like they know but wont be in the stadium like the 10 years prior to brady

  31. scottiebudseed Says:

Yall talk about ints like they are a defining stat Trayvon diggs led the league in ints and gave up big plays all the time. Carlton took the sure play and his numbers prove he will be a top 5 corner soon kid isnt even in his prime yet.. You fans are something else yall forget that tampas pass d was horrible up until carlton got the hang of the game oh wait you werent watching the games back then Fair weather fans
