“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Need A New Quarterback”

January 30th, 2022

“Hey, Billy O’Brien, how’s life in Alabama? Look, you wouldn’t still have Deshaun Watson’s cell still, would you?”

The final sentence of Ian Rapoport’s report this morning sure had a strong degree of finality.

“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need a new quarterback.”

That’s how Rapoport, of NFL Network, finished his hit this morning on the Tom Brady retirement. To play it safe, Rapoport doubled back to all his Brady contacts and they are all saying the same thing a day after Brady’s people (including Brady) strongly pushed back that no career decision has been made.

Rapoport said the reason Brady’s agent, Brady’s dad and Brady didn’t sanction the retirement reports (as well as Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians and Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht) was what Joe suspected: Brady planned to make the announcement with his Hollywood production company and saccharine-laced podcast with ChapStick Jim Gray to financially maximize this news.

Whoops.

Rapoport’s report seemed as firm as firm could be. Let’s hope if Arians stays, he doesn’t succumb to his love for Teddy Bridgewater.

You can view Rapoport’s report below in the NFL Network video.

Real tired of this will he/won’t he high school drama. Let the man announce his intentions when he is ready. Good grief, this silly tabloid journalism is getting old.

  2. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Bucs need a new QB, and head coach and GM.

  3. HC Grover Says:

Clean house. Keeping Ariens for a year is beating a dead horse. Give Trask a chance. Hire Lane Kiffin just for fun.

  4. Ash Says:

It will be teddy I would imagine I don’t see them trading for anyone worth trading for

  5. mark2001 Says:

Detroit drafts a QB, we give a second and for Goff, and let them compete. We get a comp pick or two. Have a good draft, and we could win our weak division. No more old guys. Brady was lightning in a bottle…don’t count on it happening again.

  6. HC Grover Says:

Is there a chance to get Gronk for another year?

  7. adam from ny Says:

i’m on the fence if this whole brady 2 year thing was really worth it…

    i guess it was…

now we just have a fine mess left in the buccaneer hotel suite where a rock star went wild as a short stay guest…

never got to even see him play in the old orange unis…

i guess it was just a ploy for tom to jam a title in belichik’s face and be out…

well he did just that and dipped off…

he probably never gave two sh!ts about this team 🙁

  8. Marine Buc Says:

We don’t have the salary cap dollars to sign Watson, Rodgers or Wilson.

Plus – We are in rebuild mode and really can’t afford to give up our entire draft to trade for any of these higher level QBs.

Sorry but it just isn’t going to happen…

27 free agents. If Brady retires it only adds @ $9 million to the salary cap which will give us @ $20 million.

We need all our draft picks in order to replace the 8-10 starters we are going to lose.

  9. Posey99 Says:

Trask will start. He’ll have a vet to compete with. No way you invest a second round pick, let him learn from Brady for a year then bring in someone that doesn’t know the playbook. Arians already said he’s staying not sure why arians leaving keeps getting brought up.

  10. Joe Says:

Is there a chance to get Gronk for another year?

If if means anything to you, today on a day off and just loafing around the house with his girlfriend, Gronk was wearing a Bucs sweatshirt.

Yesterday at Gasparilla girlfriend was wearing a Bucs coat.

Joe wouldn’t bet on it though. 🙁

  11. cmurda Says:

Why in the world would you want to fire a coach who has always excelled in developing young quarterbacks? We win a Superbowl and then inches away from possibly returning and then fire your head coach? I guess I don’t understand the Arians hate. I get the Bowles hate. That’s pretty easy to understand.

  12. SOEbuc Says:

Joe you’re as bad as Ian, Shefter, Florio that this is official. Not that I don’t think him retiring has a huge chance, put out a post “It’s official” before you start talking about Teddy Bridgwater.

  13. Dew Says:

    Start Trask.

  14. Buc king Says:

Anyone asking to left Bruce go needs mental help

  15. nathan Says:

ill go get that PITT QB and build from there ….people forget rothlisberger was a rookie QB around a superbowl laid team …and who was the coooridinator…..our head coach…dont be surprised he has a little big ben in him (pickett)

  16. nathan Says:

trask is a backup qb……in training

  17. Keith V Says:

    Rodgers

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Adam from ny

SF was where he wanted to be. Tampa was a fall back position.

The coaching staff blew this opportunity.

  19. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

    @Dew

Agreed, it will sink and expose bruce arrogance. Then the Bucs can find a disciplined coach that is willing to put in the work.

  20. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

    #BringBackGlennon!!!

  21. adam from ny Says:

    well since brady is gone…

    so is gronk…

no need for jensen…it’s hansey time

    see ya cappa…stinnie time…

dump d smith and salary if you so choose…

no need for lenny because he fit in with tom…

godwin will be super low balled now since we have no qb…

wow we might just re-sign rojo cheap as the feature – go figure…

we will have one tight end in cam …and will draft one + have a scrub 3rd te

wow i can go on and on…

but no tom changes everything on offense…

me13 and scotty could be our starters if we go super budget…

things could get fugly around here…

thanks to tom our short stay guest 🙁

  22. DoooshLaRue Says:

Has no one on here seen the article about TB getting 15 million on February 4th if he’s still on the team?

  23. Stone crab sam Says:

What happens if Brady luvs playing football as much as Joe luvs writing, or as much as ole stone crab luvs working on the water?
It’s not everyday one gets to do for a living what one really enjoys doing for a living and excels.
I couldn’t give that up. I wonder if Brady can? Too me that’s the gist.

  24. Gofortheface30 Says:

If Brady is gone then it’s time for a refresh. On everything. Lots of older vets, no pass rush to speak of. They need receivers beyond the trash they have after evans and godwin, hell they may need a running back and a new center. They need to resign key guys. There is A LOT of work to do to ensure this roster can ensure that the team stays RELEVANT/competitive. Arians isn’t here for the long haul anyway. I swear to Christ if we get a teddy bridgewater it would be an abomination. Ego driven, stubborn move of the highest order. I’m just imagining Arians here hanging on for a year too long, trying to make it work with the definition of mediocrity at quarterback in bridgewater with keshaun Vaughn as starting RB….that is gross and makes me want to vomit

  25. BashingBucs2520 Says:

My take, ABs backstab ended Toms career. He always played to win and for his teammates. AB showed Tom that this generation of athlete just doenst have the same love/nostalgia for the game let alone winning. Its all about social media and maximizing the attention while they have it – good or bad. Brady stepped off a cliff but he did play long enough to see a generation of athlete he wants no part of. The league is focused on recruiting as many kid and women fans – not the quality of the game.

  26. BashingBucs2520 Says:

**Did not** step off a cliff…

  27. adam from ny Says:

    @ Jmarkbuc:

yeah…i’m finding myself getting pissed at “tom the short stay guest” now…

because the stay was definitely a year to short

  28. WVBuc Says:

There are so many stories, I got confused and posted a comment in the wrong article thread…so, repost here.

A faint flicker of hope in my mind. Brady plays chess while most everyone else plays checkers. That’s so stale it’s a cliche. Which also means it’s fact.

First thought, Gisele after Super Bowl LV – what else do you have to prove

Next thought, Gisele throughout this season – it’s time for you to be at home, nagging nag nag nag

Tom leaks the retirement story to attempt to leverage the outcry and reactions into finishing the goal he set a decade ago…to play until he’s 45.

  29. Jerry R Jones Says:

Gronks girl was wearing bucs panties, I can attest, because I still have them.

  30. DaBux Says:

    Russell Wilson.

  31. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DaBux

Question #1: How many first and second round picks would we need to give up in order to trade for Wilson?

Question #2: We have less than $20 million of salary cap if TB12 retires – How can we afford to pay Wilson the $37 million he is owed next season?

Question #3: We have 27 free agents (12 are starters) if we trade our entire draft for Wilson and pay him all of our available cap space who is left to play the other 23 starting positions?

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Hmmm, after reading the comments I forgot what the article was about. Oh ya, ‘Bucs need new QB’. Got it.

Actually, Bucs need a ‘replacement’ QB. Trask will do IMO. But first, some decisions need to be made as to the DIRECTION the Bucs will be heading. For instance, will we continue with the same offensive ‘Bombs Away’ attack philosophy? (IF BA stays, my guess is that we will, but IF he also moves on, will the new HC & OC want to continue that same offensive scheme?).

Personally I think that’s a dated philosophy that can only be effectively implemented if you pour a high percentage of your salary CAP $$$ into OFFENSE (and including into a high-cost franchise QB who’s capable of running such an offense). Your defense will ending up getting table scraps. As much as Joe hates this word, a certain degree of BALANCE between offense & defense is necessary to be SB competitive.

Same could be said of the offensive attack philosophy. Personally prefer a more BALANCED attack (run-pass) than what BA runs; an offensive attack which keeps the opponent’s defense off-balance (oooh, there’s that word again) & wears them out by the 4th qtr. Hmmm, much like the Rams & Saints did to us TWICE each this season. But then again, I’m not expecting JL to call up & ask me to coach the Bucs anytime soon.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

BA haters had to shut it up for a year…..now they are back….

We’ve had exactly 2 head coaches in 46 years that have won Super Bowls…..I guess the hate is justified if you’re not a fan.

  34. D-Rome Says:

You summed it up nicely, Adam from NY.

BashingBucs2520, interesting take but you are forgetting one thing: Brady has one of the best social media presences among all NFL players. In that regard he’s the King of maximizing attention.

  35. Listnfrmafar Says:

Why do you find it so hard to believe he just wants to wait until early next week when it won’t effect today’s games and the SB? Joe, why are you turning this into a money grab?

  36. D-Rome Says:

BA haters had to shut it up for a year…..now they are back

This is so bizarre to me. Tampa Bay sports fans have a penchant for hating successful coaches. People bashing Arians are the same types that bashed Joe Maddon.

  37. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs will negotiate a 2022 salary reduction with Brady down to league minimum 1.075 million saving over 23 million on the cap instantly. Renegotiated contract only needs to be filed 24 hours before retirement paperwork. Bucs will put off retirement paperwork until after June 1st just in case TB12 changes his mind. Bucs are not in bad shape on cap in 2022.

  38. Hodad Says:

Joe, I was wearing a Buc sweat shirt yesterday playing golf and didn’t get one text from Licht wondering if i wanted to play for the Bucs. Did you expect them to wear N.E. gear to gasparilla day? I can see the new commercial now. Hey mom Tom’s retiring, you can put my football pants away again!

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Why would Brady call the team to say he hasn’t made a decision? If the information leaked early, you just keep your mouth shut, you say nothing. To call the team and say, no, everything you’re hearing is fake news, I’ve haven’t made a decision, if that’s a lie, he knows and has told all these people he’s out, then wow, Brady would be a real peckerwood to handle it that way. That’s just not how I see Brady acting, the guy is a class act, I just can’t see him lying to the team because he thinks it might help get a few extra thousand views on a retirement video.

  40. BashingBucs2520 Says:

    @D-Rome

Big difference between a 22 year veteran in his 40s with all his accomplishments joining Twitter less than two years ago and the JuJu smithschusters of the world.

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc (yes I saw what you did; this is for DaBux) …

    1 – Question 1: Forget Wilson.

    2 – Question 2: Forget Wilson.

    3 – Question 3: Forget Wilson.

Give Trask a chance in 2022 to see IF he’s got what it takes to start in the NFL. If not, Derek Carr’s a FA in 2023 and we’ll be should be in better salary CAP situation by then.

If you look at our various position groups on offense & defense, I’d maintain that our strongest is our OLine. QB, WRs, TEs, RBs, DLine, LBs & Secondary ALL need help. But our OLine can be our strength, PROVIDING that we re-sign Jensen (its’ leader) and possibly Cappa (I like his growth over these past 2 years). Oh BTW, Stinnie’s a FA too.

With a strong OLine, we can (1) pass-protect for an otherwise ‘average’ QB; and (2) run-block with the best of them IF we have a couple of decent RBs. Easy: re-sign Fournette (and Bernard for that matter). Keep Vaughn then pick up another quality (but inexpensive) RB in FA. Also Gabbert as a backup. Then either re-sign Godwin (IF money allows) OR draft his replacement in the Top-3 Rnds this year. Focus the rest of our picks on DEFENSE plus at least 1 TE (who can block). Tough schedule this year, so who knows what our record will be. But at least they’d all know that they’d been in a dogfight.

  42. Bucamania Says:

The Trask era is gonna suck.

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I really don’t want to give up any draft picks for a QB…….go with Trask or Bridgewater for a year….then sign a vet FA like Carr…..Rodgers, Wilson or someone else…..

  44. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Defense Rules

I agree 100%. Sign Gabbart to a cheap incentive laden deal and let him compete with Trask for the starting job.

I look at Trask the same way I look at Mac Jones… Accurate short to medium range passer. A game manager with a weaker than desired arm but can get the job done with a strong running game and defense.

  45. HC Grover Says:

All we are saying, is give Trask a chance.

  46. BucsfaninTX Says:

The culture was diseased by AB ….who wanted him on the team again?

  47. BucsFan81 Says:

I don’t want to give up draft picks for a QB either. This is just going to have to be a complete rebuild in order to get the cap back in order and to get good young talent on the roster. We’re going back to sucking for awhile. Embrace the suck not like long term bucs fans haven’t been used to it. I mean we went from making the playoffs in 2007 to not making it again until 2020 when we won the super bowl.

  48. Darin Says:

  49. Rich Weeks Says:

Always Doom and Gloom with bucs fans..I guessall the yrs of losing sticks..We are in a lot better position since Arians and light teamed up..let’s see what happens before everyone jumps off the cliff..Im sure upper management has a plan.

  50. Tackleblockwin Says:

Trask was drafted in Rd 2, right? To me that suggests the Bucs really liked him and thought he had a real chance to be a starter in a couple years. He will get his chance sooner than later imo.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

    Defense Rules Says:
Give Trask a chance in 2022 to see IF he’s got what it takes to start in the NFL. If not, Derek Carr

    ————

    …wait for Derek Carr… LOL!

  52. adam from ny Says:

guys they are not going with trask for a year…

it’s just not how it works…

they will go with trasky for 2 years as the experiment…

unless he bombs out so bad in year one that he has to be pulled and benched and tossed immediately in a dumpster – like a trent dilfer type year one situation…

a below average to average year by trask or better awards him the second year…

it’s like with head coaches…no one is usually dumped after a year…they are allotted that second year and sometimes a 3rd when they stink…

trask will be given a short 2 season leash…not 3…………2…

but two seasons is a long azz time to once again become the sh!t team we were before tommy…

and it will be rough for all us fans who got accustomed to being like the new america’s team…

with no tommy, we go trask or a high end starter…no bridgewaters or garappolos…a top tier dude or trask – the 2 year experiment…

most likely we go with trask for 2 years due to the cap situation…

the issue with trask is you really wanted brady to play one more year while trask is a sponge…then hopefully trask could be good to go in his 3rd season with the bucs…

the pressure alone of trask trying to fill brady’s shoes could cause a washout from day one…

    #BigAssShoesToFill

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Tackleblockwin – Trask was basically a 3rd rounder, who was seen very much as a project since he doesn’t throw an NFL ball and would have to be taught how to do so. From what we saw last preseason he didn’t look like he was ready to pilot an Arena Football League team, but in fairness to him, that’s what preseason is for and he had a lot of scrubs around him. Still, Trask did nothing that would make you think he should be playing against real NFL players anytime soon.

With that said, if you’re blowing up the team anyways, then go ahead and play him and secure that #1 overall pick in 2023.

  54. adam from ny Says:

no matter how you slice it…

trask is the next starting buccaneers qb after brady…

no matter how you slice it, he will be given his shot after tom retires…

    whether this year or whenever…

  55. RickL Says:

Enough already. Aren’t we all MEN here? Does Brady NOT crap like us…get dressed like us…fk like us? It’s ridiculous the ass kissing I’m seeing. “Will he stay…will he go”…”oh no, now what do we do”…we all sound like a bunch of btches!

I’ve had enough already. He’s just a dude that’s great at what he does – period. He’s not God. Let’s all stop kissing his ass. ENOUGH. Let him retire. We’ll retool and find our OWN quarterback (or at least someone who can give us 10 years like a Russell Wilson). We might suck for a while, but let’s have some pride here!

While I too love Brady/Gronk – don’t fool yourselves – they were NEVER ours. Watch – after their retirement…Tampa will be a minor dot in their careers (see Namath with the Rams…Jordan with Wizards…etc.). I’m forever grateful for the Super Bowl – YES – but am tired of the ass kissing we’ve seen these past two years…can’t take it anymore – let’s act like MEN and not some teenage girls!

It’s to the point where I’m sick of the whole thing. Let’s bring in our ‘own’ QB and enjoy the ride – OUR ride….so here’s an idea. Let’s ALL get together and jump OFF Brady’s dxck!

Remember, we’re the Tampa Bay Bucs – NOT the Tampa Bay Brady’s.

    GO BUCS!

  56. adam from ny Says:

    i agree with rod…

he doesn’t really throw an nfl ball – from what i saw

    #BigTroubleInLittleChina

  57. adam from ny Says:

    RickL:

i’d put money on it that brady fk’s better than you 🙂

  58. 1sparkybuc Says:

We should still be the best team in the division, and we all play basically the same schedule. Not likely that we are contenders for another Lombardi, but we should at least make the playoffs as division champs. Trask should be serviceable if not great. We have holes, but we also have some great young talent to build a team around. I believe Godwin will be a cornerstone along with Evans.

  59. RickL Says:

    You’re probably right. LOL

Other than that…am sure he’s like us. LOL

  60. Rod Munch Says:

RickL – the fact you need an answer right now or you can’t go on with your life… you sound like you’re on your period.

Go change your pad and calm down.

  61. allbuccedup Says:

Now that Josh McDaniels is head coach of the Raiders Brady is going to demand a trade. Brady for Carr. Problem solved! HaHaHaHaHa!

  62. RickL Says:

Ok Rod – go jump back on Brady’s dxck. Seems you like it there.

  63. RickL Says:

Btw Rod I’ve had two posts in 10 years – you live on this site. So get off my dck too!

  64. Rod Munch Says:

adam from ny — I will say that he did address my biggest concern in the preseason, and that was that he didn’t have an NFL arm. His college tape looks like Danny Wuerffel throwing these soft pinpoint passes that will never be completed in the NFL, and I never any zip on the ball. Well in the preseason he threw some deeper balls with zip, so he at least has an adequate NFL arm. One issue, however, was that as he added zip, his accuracy went down, but that is to be expected and can be helped with reps. However he very much looked like a project, not even remotely ready for a real game in what we saw, but again, it was early so I’m not saying he’s a wasted pick… yet.

  65. Marine Buc Says:

Trask can develop. Let’s take a look at Tom Brady’s draft analysis…

    Poor build
    –Skinny
–Lacks great physical stature and strength
–Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush
    –Lacks a really strong arm
    –Can’t drive the ball downfield
–Does not throw a really tight spiral
–System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad lib
    –Gets knocked down easily

  66. Marine Buc Says:

RickL – dude, you’re the idiot demanding that Brady, right this moment, answer your question or you can’t take it… you’re an idiot.

The guy can take whatever amount of time he needs, he’s sort of earned that.

Now go take a valium and drink some cranberry juice.

  68. tampabayallday Says:

Clean house, coaching screwed the pooch

  69. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Once again Defense Rules use common sense and rationality. He actually discusses football and the subject at hand. How refreshing!

My big questions are along these line. How do we find a QB of sufficient talent and a good enough fit in order to go into a retool mode? Alternatively should we work with Gabberts and Trask and go into a rebult mode now?

I am expecting BA to hang around for a couple of more years and see what he can do along with Jason Licht.

  70. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe

Sorry for the repost. but your site is taking a huge dump onto my head today…

  71. Rod Munch Says:

JimbobBucsFan — DefenseRules big plan is to wait until Derek Carr hits free agency… LOL!

That’s like planning and hoping Mike Glennon hits free agency. Or Baker Mayfield. Or Trent Dilfer.

  72. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Derek Carr career stats:

    65% completion rate
    193 TDs
    85 INT

Now I see why the Fancy Man doesn’t want him.
He hasn’t thrown nearly enough INTs to compete with his hero JayMiss Winsnone!

Carr would be a solid plan B.

  73. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Dooosh

I agree but we can’t even afford Carr.

First off we will have to trade for him. So say goodbye to our much needed draft class.

Second – I don’t think we can afford the $19.9 million dollar salary he is owed for next season.

We really do not have the cap space for this move…

  74. Rod Munch Says:

DooooDouche – Literally addressed that already… his stats mean nothing because he literally plays to protect his stats. I’ve literally watched him on 4th and goal at the end of a game, down by multiple scores so his play has no impact on the game, just toss the ball out of bounds because he didn’t want to get an INT on his stat sheet. He’s a slightly better Teddy Bridgewater. Both guys play afraid to make plays, because in big moments, they crumble. For example, that last drive by Carr vs the Bengals, literally everyone that has ever watched Carr knew he’d choke and throw an INT.

If he’s such an amazing QB, why are they always trying to replace him? Why would they let him walk for nothing?

Because he’s a loser. He’s a guy who will get you to 9-8, and that’s it. There is zero upside.

  75. adam from ny Says:

i hope you’re right on his arm rod…

the arm left a lot to be desired from what i saw early on…

    @rod & @jimbob

there could be a slim chance that josh mcdaniels wants to go a different direction at qb in vegas – if carr becomes available and brady retires we must pounce – let trask sit and wait

imho carr is a pretty darn good qb

  76. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … Kinda snippy today, aren’t we? Derek Carr has done very well, especially over these past 4 years with the Raiders. His completion percentage is 68.7% in that span, and he’s thrown for over 4,000 passing yards in each of those seasons (this past season was over 4,800 yds). His interception percentage is only 1.9% & he’s averaged right around 10 INTs/season for his 8 seasons. (Tom Brady’s career interception percentage is 1.8% and Drew Brees was at 2.3%).

BTW, he’s only 30 years old & has only missed TWO games in his 8-year career. And oh ya, he’s averaged THREE 4th Qtr comebacks per year over that same span (Tom Brady averaged less than 2 per year, and Drew Brees was roughly the same as Brady).

Folks need to consider the team that any QB has around him before passing judgment. The Raiders have had some REALLY BAD defenses over his 8-year career, and that certainly hasn’t helped his numbers. But press on Rod; continue LOL.

  77. Swampbuc Says:

    Thanks Todd

  78. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – I’m no more snippy than my usual difficult self. I’m completely aware of his stats, but you need to compare them to his play. There’s a reason Carr is not liked by Raiders fans, they want him gone, they cheer every time Mariota would come into the game. If he’s so good, why do they not like him? Why do national media guys who watched them, mostly dislike Carr (yes, some like him, but even they say he’s a mid-tier QB who isn’t winning you playoff games). Carr, can, at times make some nice throws – and if that’s what you watch, if you just see the highlights, you say, wow, that’s a good QB… but again, if he has production, isn’t that old, mostly healthy, why do Raiders fans want him gone? Why would the Raiders let him go?

Because he’s a loser. He’s not a winner. He’s not a loser. He crumbles in big situations.

He’s a worse version of Kirk Cousins.

He has zero upside, and a proven track record. There’s a reason they’d dump him and move on, and it’s not because Tom Brady is available.

  79. Bojim Says:

Seems a few of you are mad at Brady. Why? He got us a SB and a damn good record this year. Good luck Tom, and thanks!

  80. Marine Buc Says:

“Because he’s a loser. He’s not a winner. He’s not a loser. He crumbles in big situations”

    Hey Rod – thanks.

You really cleared that up for me… lol

I agree that Carr isn’t the best option this season. To me Carr is a less injury prone Teddy Bridgewater…

If BA stays we are going to bring back B. Gabbert on a cheap one year deal and have him compete with K. Trask for the starting job.

Our only hope is that Trask can develop and at least be as good as Mac Jones was this pat season.

Once we are out of salary cap/roster hell we can hopefully see another playoff game.

  81. BigMacAttack Says:

Anyone who thought TB12 was going to be here more than 2 years at the signing was probably being a little naive. We got 2 years and a Lombardi in the first one. I’m very appreciative of Tom coming here and making that happen. Injuries really killed the Bucs hopes this season, primarily Wirfs and Godwin. We need new corners all the way around because they can’t play zone or figure out assignments, even after all this time. We are going to be ok and Licht will figure it out. The O line is solid and needs to all be kept. The linebackers are solid. We need a top tier running back and a defensive end to replace JPP

  82. Tye Says:

Andy Dalton has got to be better than Blaine Gabbert…
Bring in Andy to compete with Trask and the best start the 2022 season… Not many great options out their as of right now!

  83. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tye

I don’t disagree with you. But Gabbert and BA have a history. BA knows Gaabert and Gabbert knows BA’s system very well.

My biggest fear with Gabbert (besides just being a medicore QB at best) is how injury prone he is.

Plus – I believe Dalton would be more expensive than Gabbert and are you relly getting a much better QB for that money?

    Probably not by much…

  84. Marine Buc Says:

    *really not relly… lol

  85. adam from ny Says:

I always wait and watch on my NFL app.

I honestly can’t stan the mother f*%$ing commercials anymore.

I love to talk Bucs football with real fans.

  87. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Without a legitimate QB we will have difficulty resigning and attracting FA’s…

  88. mark2001 Says:

Adam…you didn’t get the message? Mahomes is the next Brady. Just like the old wrestling days, the golden child messiah will save the game. It’s all set.

  89. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … ‘I’m no more snippy than my usual difficult self.’

Congrats on that. That’s not what most people aspire to, but hey, if it works for you, go for it.

Yes I’m sure there is a reason that Derek Carr isn’t liked by Raiders’ fans (in Vegas). I’m sure he’s screwed up the ‘odds’ many times over the seasons, and in Vegas, that’s the kiss of death I’m sure. Oakland was no cakewalk either.

Drew Brees was only a 62% passer when he was with San Diego for 4 yrs. But when he moved to New Orleans & was with Sean Payton, he jumped up to a 68.8% passer over his remaining 15 yrs. The coach & the team made a massive difference IMO. Not only how deftly Payton ran the offense, but also that the Saints have had some very good defenses over those yrs. The TEAM made all the difference.

Same thing with Derek Carr IMO. Raiders’ defenses have really stunk it by-and-large over his career. Working backwards on Points Allowed rankings … #26, #30, #24, #32, #20, #20, #22, #32. That’s an average defense ranking of #26 over his career, and that WASN’T because of Carr throwing INTs (like Jameis became known for?). No, averaging THREE 4th qtr comebacks per season tells me that HE was the one who gave them a chance.

I don’t know how many of his 127 games you actually watched, but my gut tells me that you created a subjective opinion based on watching probably a handful of his games. Out of curiosity, if you ONLY watched Tom Brady’s last game, would you anoint him as THE GOAT? I doubt it; it’s the player’s ‘body of work’ that should define them IMO, with special emphasis on their most recent performances in the past few years. Carr stacks up quite well using that as the criteria.

  90. Biff Barker Says:

Let’s not get all spooled up. We all knew Tommy was a short timer. And he delivered. 2nd year plagued by injuries and drama. That’s football. All these morons out there beating their chest over “sources”.

  91. Defense Rules Says:

Oh and BTW Rod, when Jon Gruden … the renowned QB Guru … became Raiders’ HC, everyone was saying that one of the first things he’d do would be to get rid of Derek Carr. Gruden got there in 2018 & was HC for FOUR seasons.

Wanna guess who his starting QB for ALL 65 games in those FOUR SEASONS was? BINGO Rod … Derek Carr. But hey, once again, press on with your LOL.

  92. Tye Says:

@Marine Buc – I can agree with you considering the money and the amount of time Gabbert has spent in the offense….
With that I would feel better if he can use that to help prepare Trask and secure the Bucs next 10 years at the qb position!

  93. CrazyBucfan84 Says:

Good grief why on earth are we talking about Gabbert, Dalton, or even Bridgewater? Gabbert knows Arians of course but would you honestly trust him as your front and center QB? Dalton or even Bridgewater???

Bruce Arians is the “QB guru” and we drafted Trask for a reason. Lets follow through with what we planned and see if Brady rubbed off on him. We have a good offensive line that will allow him time to throw and take off some pressure. There are no good QB’s out there that are worth throwing money at for what we want. At this point it is just logical sense,

  94. Defense Rules Says:

JimbobBucsFan … ‘How do we find a QB of sufficient talent and a good enough fit in order to go into a retool mode? Alternatively should we work with Gabbert and Trask and go into a rebuild mode now?’

I’ve wondered the same thing Jimbo about finding a starting QB to replace Tom Brady, then came to the conclusion that we’d better go with Plan B right out of the gate. Give Trask a shot with the #1’s in preseason & see what he’s got. If he’s reasonably OK, let him start the season, but keep him on a short leash (with Gabbert as his backup).

If he does well, fantastic; move on to solving other more pressing problems. If he flounders, stick in Gabbert. If we do well on the season, we’ll probably make the playoffs (personally think that NFC South will be weak this year). If we don’t do well, we’ll get a high draft pick, and MIGHT be able to draft a good young QB. In any event, Derek Carr (who I’m very high on … for the Bucs) will be a FA in 2023. And we SHOULD be in a much better salary CAP situation in 2023, so we could be a player in signing him.

Don’t tell Rod about this potential solution though. He gets really snippy every time Derek Carr’s name is dropped as a potential Bucs’ QB. And there’s nothing more fearsome than a snippy Rod Munch.

  95. Jmarkbuc Says:

We are going to need a coaching staff that can get a heckuva lot out of low priced, young players.

TB not around to use as a crutch.

  96. Todd Says:

I wish we could find a long term QB we probably never will but I expect bridgewater if Brady retires

  97. PassingThru Says:

The Bucs might as well go with Trask at some point next season, even though I seriously doubt he’s a franchise QB, let alone a starter. He’s going to have to make a mammoth second year jump. If he’s capable, great; if not the Bucs by floundering will have the draft capital in 2023 to search for a franchise QB.

I don’t get the logic of signing retreads like Bridgewater. That’s how you can get “stuck in the middle” where you cannot get to the playoffs, but don’t stink enough to get quality draft picks.

  103. crazybucs_CL Says:

  104. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Maybe that excitement will entice Mr Brady… I hope our defensive backs we’re watching the Bengals secondary that 2 half. They adjusted accordingly, something our D-coordinator refused to do which in was the cause of Mr Brady’s departure.

  105. PassingThru Says:

I’m not surprised, Burrow is the heir to be the best QB in this league. Mahomes is wonderful, but I think Burrow is remarkably complete at such an early stage.

But Cincinnati has to make a serious investment in reshaping its offensive line. They’re quite mediocre and life threatening to Burrow.

  106. Mike Johnson Says:

A lot of people hatin on BA and Bowles. I mean they were at the helm when we won a Super bowl. Give’em a chance. You never know. We might reload with a great vet at QB. You never know.

  107. StickinUp4Centers Says:

“thats finding a QB, not waiting the QB to find you”

Not so much “finding” as being the worst team in a year with a stud QB (two counting Herbert) in the draft. Unfortunately for us, the year we were the worst the QB class wasn’t as great (I liked Winston but it is the truth).

The saddest part of this weekend is that the Bucs could have easily beat the 9ers and then the Bengals.

  108. Bucs Guy Says:

As for Defense and his love of Carr, this is the same guy who said Chris Conte and Ryan Smith were good players and the Bucs would have a top defense with those two starting. I’m not making that up. If you side with Defense on any player, you need to seriously rethink your position.

As for Carr, as I said, I’m very aware of his stats, and again, I’ve watched him literally throw away the ball on 4th down, in desperate situations, because he was more worried about his box score than trying to win. If you think that is a good quality, then he’s your man, him and Mike Glennon.

Derek Carr is way better then any of the names you said. Is he great NO, but he would have the Bucs actually be competitive and playoff contenders.

There is no shot at getting a savior QB right now.

  113. JimmyJack Says:

Are we really looking for a bigtime QB? I dont know how all this CAP stuff works or how we can manipulate the numbers but if you bring in a new QB it should only make sence if you are giving him a 3 year window to win a SuperBowl.

Maybe thats possible but sure doesnt sound like it.

Seems like a more realistic plan would be to work these deals to clear up dead CAP this year and position ourselfs for a bigtime move at QB for 2023…….In a dream scenario Trask prooves this year he is good enough to run this offense and then you can use your money on other positions.

Maybe there is a chance they can trade for a Rodgers or Wilson and still have enough cash left surround them with big free agents for a couple years but that just doesnt sound realistic.

    ———–

I said he’s better… but Carr and Glennon are very much alike, they’ll literally throw away the ball on 4th down, with the game on the line, than force it and risk getting an INT which would hurt their box score.

The Raiders fans, in Oakland and Vegas, every single year are begging for someone new, because they know Carr is a loser who will choke under pressure.

I will say Carr speaking out and saying he didn’t like the lynching of Gruden, that everyone in the NFL should release all their emails and text messages, that was ballsy of him and made me actually like him — but not as a QB.

I’d rather have Kirk Cousins, who has similar numbers, similar screw-ups, but is a better QB. However, you’re not winning a SB with either guy.

  116. JimmyJack Says:

Crazybucs lay off the hard stuff dude. Dont pretend like Todd didnt take a historically awful defense from 2018 and turn them into a Championship caliber D. Lets not rewrite history, the guy knows what hes doing despite an underwhelming performance by his defense last week.

On offense Bruce has literally take 2 horrible orginizations and transformed them into contenders. Yes, we are almost certainly going to need a QB to compete…….its not like Bruce doesnt know that position. He literally took a bust in Carson Palmer and redined his career. Palmer was an average at best QB to everybody and Bruce prooved everyone wrong. There is no rational reason to think Bruce doesnt know how to find us a QB. This team is in very good hands.

    GO BUCS!!!!

P.S. I would ask you to sell me your tickets but it doesnt sound like it will be an obstacle to get into a game with all the bandwagoners turning their backs.

  117. August 1976 Buc Says:

lol Carr is still better than the immortal Mike Glennon, he of the “concrete feet” I say this with condolences to the Mike Glennon Mob lololol
And Cousins is very much a head case, Carr > Cousins.

But in the end the best scenario is that Trask can actually be better than most think he will be. You have mentioned that Trask does not make NFL throws. I have not seen enough of Trask to comment about that. Trask has a history of being accurate. Accuracy is one of the the defining thing with the great QB’s, along with enough arm strength. The little sample size of Trask so far in the preseason showed he has a stronger arm than what is being said by some but really the jury is still out for me. What we have seen with Brady is he is all about completing the pass, laying it in there and not just strong arming the ball like so many QB’s do, but they have no touch at all. Brady can rip it when needed, but he has great touch on his passes too. So with Trask he is accurate, but we will see if he can rip it when he needs to. Because in the NFL, the windows to throw into are a lot smaller than in College.

    Time will tell….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  118. BucEmUo Says:

Call Rodgers and give him and Adam’s Brady And Godwin contracts. Of not keep godwin and bring in Watson. 119. steele Says:

  120. Rod Munch Says:

  121. LakelandSteve Says:

I don’t see Arians staying if Brady retires. God help us if he does and brings in Teddy Bridgewater. The dude is fragile and won’t last the season. Maybe they can work something out with a trade for a top QB. Wouldn’t it be funny if the Bucs best bet ended up being Jameis Winston. What a turn of events that would be.

  122. Rod Munch Says:

LakelandSteve – short of Rodgers or Wilson, the Bucs best bet would be Winston, and he’d be someone they could actually afford as well. It makes total sense, he knows the offense, was ultra productive, even after he left you never heard any of the players say anything bad about him. Plus, in NO, after sitting a year, he played with no NFL WRs or TEs, had them 5-2, was one of the leaders in TD-to-INT, had the same QBr as Brady.

The team won’t do it, because they’d think it would be admitting they made a mistake, which is stupid — if you can get Tom Brady, you get Tom Brady — but there’s no reason they shouldn’t be on the phone with Winston at the first chance and ask him when he’s healed up and if he wants to come home.

  123. B-Rad Says:

Trask was just as good as Burrow in those UF-LSU matchups and look where Burrow is now just 2 years later. Let’s roll with him as it could not be any worse than the near prior 2 decades before Brady arrived! If we are bad again, then we can rebuild through draft.

Watching Georgia beat Alabama, we got to be nuts not to take a Georgia player this year in draft!

  124. BuccaneerScotty Says:

    ——–

Except that was college and Trask was throwing soft rainbows that are INTs in the NFL. He was very accurate on those rainbows, but if you’ve watched college QBs like Trask for a long time, you know they NEVER translate to the NFL, they have to completely change the way they throw the ball, and that screws up accuracy, and their entire game was accuracy.

But there is always a 1st, and maybe Trask is that guy. I doubt it, but if Brady is gone, and you’re going to blow up the team anyways and get the cap cleared up, why not give it a shot and lets see what he can do. I expect it would be a 3-14 trainwreck, but that’s the price you pay for winning a SB the way the Bucs did it. And, again, to be clear, I said at the time, I’m A-OK with cap hell down the road, just win while Brady is here.

There is a lot of mistrust between Glazers and Winston, they were looking for an exit from Winston, and Brady fell into their lap.

Just do not think in Glazers mind that the positives out way all the extra stuff that comes with Jameis in Tampa.

Contrary to so many Jameis has more than enough Talent, but it is about Trust on the field and Drama off the Field. It does look like Sean Payton was able to get him to stop being so careless with the ball. When he left Tampa, he had demonstrated during his time in Tampa despite his talent was he could not be trusted on the field or off the field. I can’t say on Trask, I was only able to see him play in one preseason and he threw nice spirals to no one in particular.

    ————–

In the NFC, the only team I thought the Bucs would lose to were the Rams (or the Saints if they got in). It was the only team. Packers on road? No problem. 49ers? No problem. Dallas? No problem. The Cardinals? LOL!

As for the AFC, I didn’t like the Bills rematch at all, and beating the Chiefs twice in a row would have been really hard, but not out of the question. Everyone else certainly the Bengals, the Bucs would have beat (not a blow-out, but they would have won).

Really stinks the way the match-ups worked out, had the Rams went to GB, they would have lost, had the 49ers came here, the Bucs would have won. It’s a game of matchups, and there was one team in the NFC that the Bucs stink against.

This is a great example of what you do all the time Rod; you consistently attempt to denigrate other commenters to make some others believe that you’re wiser than you really are.

No one in this thread has ever said that ‘Carr is the next Tom Brady’ that I can see. That’s YOU twisting others’ comments in a very weak attempt to puff yourself up. All the rest of the crappola about AB & OBJ & Grayson & QB play Cleveland is nothing but a smokescreen. And so is going back 5-10 years or so to come up with ‘Chris Conte & Ryan Smith’ comments. It’s apparent you’re perfectly willing to spend quite a bit of time to use anything you can find in your vain attempts to denigrate others who don’t share your positions.
