Lessons Learned? (Video)

August 23rd, 2020

Below you’ll see video of rookie right tackle Tristan Wirfs getting blown up in 11-on-11 work while the guard next to him commits a holding penalty.

This is some of the true joy and intrigue of training camp for Joe, interpreting what’s really happening on the field when a Buccaneer wins and a Buccaneer loses, in between the illusions that come with guys not being able to play full speed. It’s a big, fun puzzle, made far more difficult by media neither being able to see all of practice nor view practice film. (The latter cracks Joe up. Bucs officials might not like the way media covers a training camp practice, but that’s the equivalent of complaining about a movie critic who was denied the chance to see the whole movie.)

Yesterday, the Bucs published a fun highlight reel from last week’s practices.

At the 42-second mark, you’ll see Ndamukong Suh blow past Wirfs and disrupt Ronald Jones. Next to Wirfs, you’ll see a guard (Joe can’t see the number) commit what sure looks like a holding penalty against roster-hopeful linebacker Noah Dawkins. And then corner back Mazzi Wilkins wraps up Ronald Jones.

It’s an all-around win for the defense.

Joe hopes Wirfs is learning these valuable camp lessons. Jason Licht says Wirfs turned a corner last Wednesday.

Dang…I’ll say itagain..Wirfs is the key (only weak link?) to getting this offense really humming.

Mazzi Wilkins has good skills but he is a tad too slow to compete with the best in this league. Parnell Motley about the same size Mazzi but faster (4.5 in the forty). It seems more probably for Motley to make the last CB slot this year.

This is why they call it practice

That’s some good “jazz music” in that video clip, hey boys?

  6. BringBucsBack Says:

Leighroy, I hear a “horn” but, not enough “wrong notes” to be jazz;)

Joe, you must truly study these clips to make sense out of the 1.5 second football clip of 8-10 moving players at the line of scrimmage during a football play, that you write about. Heck, the previous clip of Suh standing still & adjusting his shoulder pads in slow motion was twice as long. We either need a slow-motion feature or a diagnoses for Tourette’s!?

It almost looks like the film was sped up a bit.

Is this proof that Brady has the Bucs motivated and playing faster?

    I would think so.

Ahhh yes now it’s all coming back to me. Linebackers and Lineman getting to Jamies and Rojo right as the ball is hitting their hands, and fans everywhere blaming them for the lack of production LMAO!!!! Now I remember!!!!

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

One knock on Wirfs was his slow feet, and that was evident in this one play, as that no name D Lineman went right around him.
