“He’s Starting To Settle Down”

August 20th, 2020

Tristan Wirfs update.

Joe has noticed the video the Bucs pumped out yesterday got readers stoked while it showed in the background rookie right tackle Tristan Wirfs holding (?) his own against NFL sack king Shaq Barrett.

And it seems that’s just what the man who traded up to draft Wirfs, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, wanted to see.

Licht appeared on “Movin’ the Chains” yesterday, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, to break down the Bucs for co-hosts former Bucs scout Pat Kirwan and former Bucs quarterback Jim Miller.

Licht thinks Wirfs may have turned a corner yesterday.

Wirfs “took a big step [Wednesday], I felt,” Licht said. “Compared to the last couple of days where he was just kind of feeling his way. He’s gone up against Shaq Barrett almost every day. Shaq is bringing his arsenal, his weaponry with him as a pass rusher and showing [Wirfs] everything.

“And he’s starting to settle down and things are starting to slow down, which is a good thing. He’s such a massive person with great strength and he is a phenomenal athlete. He’s a great kid. Very smart.”

It seems the Bucs told Shaq before training camp that the team wanted him to break in Wirfs; treat Wirfs like the rookie he is and show him things never seen before on an B1G field and see what the cornfed pool-jumper has to offer (unlike Licht, Wirfs jumps out of pools).

If Wirfs can hold his own against Shaq and Jason Pierre-Paul, then Joe will feel a lot better about Wirfs trying to slow down Cam Jordan in 3 1/2 weeks.

Joe can’t help but remember how in his first padded practice, then-rookie guard Ali Marpet was tasked to stop Pro Bowl tackle Gerald McCoy. Marpet did not embarrass himself and he’s been a fine offensive lineman ever since.

Good news indeed. The RT spot in my opinion is really key in getting this offense to hum. It’s really the only weak link on the offense and making that a non issue will go along way towards success. I read that “playing with a broken bone” Alex Cappa has added some bulk and strength.

If he plays solid and doesn’t commit the 2 guaranteed penalties per game like the previous RT, then I am happy.

JPP is the next test, he’s more Cam Jordan-like.
