“What You Lose Is A Willingness To Take A Hit”

May 19th, 2020

Retired QB Phil Simms has two Super Bowl rings and 20-plus years as a top-dog NFL analyst for CBS Sports.

The guy has spent a ton of time studying Tom Brady and getting to know him.

Simms calls it straight, so Joe was very pleased to hear Simms’ words about Brady on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio.

Asked whether Brady will be rejuvenated in Tampa, Simms said there’s no need for rejuvenation.

“I think talent-wise, as far as his movement and his arm goes, I don’t really see a dropoff at all. I think his arm is still top notch and all that,” Simms said.

“You know, what you lose is a willingness to take a hit. And sometimes you gotta do that; of course he took his share of hits [in 2019]. But that’s the one thing I think that you always – what ends your career as a quarterback. You get to a point where you go, ‘You know what, I don’t want to get hit anymore.”

“I think that’s one of the first things that come to mind. I’m not going to say I saw that last year, but the New England offense, what they did, maybe [it was] the guys he was throwing to. It wasn’t a group he wanted; no matter what they tried it wasn’t working. I don’t know if he led the league in throwaways. But if he didn’t lead, he was one of the top two or three for sure. Hey, smart thing to do. Live to play the next play. That would be the only critique I’d have [of Brady].”

About those throwaways, Simms is correct. Per the PFF Tribe, Brady nearly set a new record last year.

(For Bucs fans unaware, a throwaway is something you do rather than throw the ball to the opposing team’s linebacker.)

Joe’s fired up to see Brady operate. He’s beaten back Father Time and there’s no reason to think he won’t keep rolling in 2020. But 2021 is a entirely different animal.

Live to fight another day. Something I havnt seen any Bucs QB do in a long time, unless you count the last 15 years of dumping off a 3 yard pass on 3rd and long as “living to fight another day” LoL

  2. Youngbucs Says:

The couldn’t beat man coverage for him last season. You can watch breakdowns of what defenses did to them last year. Brady is about to light it up.

  3. Craig Says:

Part of the reason for so many throw-aways last season was a lack of receivers gaining any space.

I don’t think that will be a problem this season. There will be waves of receivers coming out. That will disallow double teams and set up mismatches with fast guys trying to be covered by linebackers and DEs.

The line will hold up well if there aren’t any linebackers sneaking in and the safety has to play a high center field.

(For Bucs fans unaware, a throwaway is something you do rather than throw the ball to the opposing team’s linebacker.) haha Joe, I almost fell out my chair reading that comment. Brady only had Edelman last year and threw for 4000 yards lol. I cannot wait to see what he does with all of these offensive weapons. This should be very exciting times for anyone who Calls themselves a buc fan.

Thanks for defining throwaway! Too funny!!!

  6. Afo Says:

Brady is worked out with Cameron Brate, Miller, OJ Howard, Dare Ogunbowale and Gabbert today

Afo, indeed. Good article about it in the time. I assume one of the Joe’s is working on something regarding this as we speak.

  8. BucEmUp Says:

He didn’t change teams to play one season. Next year will be our Superbowl year hopefully this year we at least see playoffs. None of this would be possible without Tod Bowles defense and how it finally took shape at the end of last season

  9. chris L Says:

love the joke on the throwaway haha. we have no idea what that is in tampa.

  10. TomTerrific Says:

Interesting. Throw the ball away from the defense if nothing is open. Classic Sims trying to criticize a far better QB than he ever was. But he’s the same guy that refuses to say Redskins, in favor of the moniker Washington football club. An absolute jackass moron.

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

“Throwaways” historically for Bucs fans, has been money spent on tickets to home games!

  12. Anthony Dickson Says:

I agree, it’s not always a deterioration of arm strength that forces quarterbacks to retire, I think I remember an interview with the original TB12(Terry Bradshaw) that said when he retired it was his legs that he lost and not his throwing strength that helped influence him to retire.

Haven’t seen a throwaway in 5 years!! Seen a lot of throwaways to different color Jerseys!!! Lets goooooo Tommy Brady change the culture!!👍🏉

  14. JameisAlmighty! Says:

Brady is going to get blasted this year. Predicting he will have an atrocious year and fans will blame Jameis.

  15. JameisAlmighty! Says:

The culture will only be changed when Jason Licht leaves. Until then Tampa is stuck with the worst GM since Matt Millen

Winner of today’s snark award. Good stuff!

  17. Chria@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Brady may want to get used to taking a hit, because he will surely face many all out blitzes, and some will get to him.
If I were the opposing teams defensive coordinator, I would blitz the heck out of us, and we can bet that the other teams will do exactly that.
We have too many weapons to cover everyone

  18. BigHog Says:

Let’s button this up! NE12 was THE GOAT, his skills have diminished, he is no longer willing to take a hit for the team, he is now known as Mr. Check Down! Why so many are surprised is beyound me, taking good care of your body will take you so far and then it’s time to turn them in…hang them up…maybe someone should take the keys! I know some will say he is the GOAT and deserves to go out when he says it over! But I can tell you that a few practices with new receivers or a couple of more reps in the gym will not make age go away, again i state NE12 was THE GOAT but there are some new kids on the block now, and they want that GOAT name for themselves….Lamar…Patrick…DeShaun and yes yours truly Mr. 5,000!!.

  19. JameisAlmighty! Says:

Hopefully Tom Brody is practicing getting off the ground from being sacked.
