Murphy-Bunting Advised Early In Week He’d Split Nickel Reps Against Saints

October 8th, 2019

Playing time slashed

Yes, Bucco Bruce Arians dropped the dreaded “S” word on the Buccaneers secondary.

He called them “soft” after Sunday’s game — and he didn’t back off the comment yesterday. And the designation game after Arians had poor reviews of their play over the previous two games.

Joe’s wondering whether that will get the lights flashing on Arians’ famous accountability chart and drive a lineup change.

If the corners are soft, shouldn’t Ryan Smith get one shot to start? There might be no better way to toughen up a player than benching him. Joe’s eager to see rookie cornerback Jamel Dean get his shot to start.

On the change front, Joe finds it noteworthy that the Bucs entered Sunday’s game with a plan to split nickel cornerback reps with rookie Sean Murphy-Bunting and second-year man M.J. Stewart. Murphy-Bunting told Buccaneers Radio last night that coaches advised him early in the week that he’d be sharing snaps.

First, Joe will say nickel is an odd position to split reps. It’s part-time out of the gate.

Also, that change tells Joe the Bucs are down on Stewart, who was compared to Tyrann Mathieu by the Bucs’ safeties coach Nick Rapone during the spring. Rapone also noted the Bucs’ nickel must be physical. Is Murphy-Bunting physical? Bucs fans will find out as his playing time grows.

Seems the secondary has not been solved and that maybe a bunch of things that that the head kangol states is just white noise; arians will be in Georgia by December, getting ready for his new gig on cbs calling football games and the bucs will be at the least the 4th worst team in the NFL

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I just simply can’t believe we drafted all these DBs these past seasons and all we have to show for is a decent DB in Carlton Davis

This just goes to show you that the bucs scouting department and talent evaluators absolutely suck.

Jason Licht should’ve been fired, but instead he gets a new contract.

These are sad sad sad times to be a buc’s fan.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL at comparing MJ Stewart to the Honey Badger.

The faster we can get Steward and VH3 off the field, the better.

    *Stewart

Dusthty Rhothdes, you’re just another wannabe Realist. Everyone’s tired of you idiot’s.

  6. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

If anything can possibly go wrong, it can and will go wrong.. ….SMLB

  7. m0j0 Says:

VHIII needs to be in the slot and either Dean, Smith or Murphy-Bunting need to fight for that starting spot on the outside opposite The Hitman Davis.

  8. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Eric, you keep on drinking the kool aid and accepting a losing franchise year after year….go get em buddy, keep dropping $12 on jack & cokes and $700 on season tickets and the carpertbagging glazers will keep playing 3 card monte with fools like you. Free advice when sitting down at the poker table after 10 minutes you cannot figure out who the sucker is…its you ERIC, it has always been the Erics in buc land for the past 12 years

  9. Eric Says:

Dusthty Rhothdes, Realist, and all the Mike Smith & Dirk Koetter nuthuggers are there same idiot’s that wanted Mike Glennon to be our star quarterback. Now, Glennon is sniffing the jockstrap of Carr and barely beat out the notorious Nathan Peterman fir qb2 on the Raiders.

It’s tough being a Bucs fan. It’s like falling in love. It’s your team. There’s the honeymoon period and then the Superbowl climax. Then after a while, you start noticing that some things you thought were cute, start to be annoying. But it’s love. Do you bitch about “those things” or stick in there, hoping things will change. With the Bucs, I complain and threaten divorce every year, then come running back, like a sucker.

  13. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

They owe it to the fans to win the game going into the bye week…. too dismal to contemplate enduring two weeks with a loss !

  14. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Eric…the best coach bucs have had past 12 years is schiano, had the bucs going in right direction, strong defense, good running game and glennon managing the game, rookie glennon because some other qb decided south tampa was higher than being an nfl qb; then mrsa attacked the schiano bucs and the ship sunk; then loser lovie and the rest is history. This team has been holding a 2 of diamonds and 8 of spades since they fired gruden and the hand has never improved. Jason Licht has ruined this team and has ZERO clue how to build a winning franchise; so keep @ me…the proof is the 5-11 record and crappy drafts

  15. unbelievable Says:

Schiano did not have a strong defense, please stop repeating this lie.

Our run defense was good, while our passing defense was absolutely atrocious.

We were ranked 21st and 23rd in giving up points. That is NOT a strong defense by any stretch of the imagination.

  16. Eric Says:

Dusthty Rhothdes, If Schiano was such a great coach why hasn’t he been able to find a suitable gig in the nfl, college, or even highschool?
If Glentard is so great why couldn’t he keep a job with the p.o.s. cardinals team that were so glad to get rid of his giraffe a–?????
At least Bruce Arians has a resume we can be proud of.

  17. a-bomb Says:

Ummm… that maniac Sciano was fired because the team quit on him. Koetter had his faults, but the players even continued to play for Morris but both of them can at least say that their guys continued to play for them. I will give you that Schiano was better than Lovie.

Great analogy about being a bucs’ fan in relating to a marriage.

    I think you’re 100% right.

We Bucs fans say this to ourselves every season to the point where it’s just getting really really really OLD!!!!!

We’re all tired of the losing
    ..tired of the excuses
..tired of talking about the draft in November
..tired of other teams turning it around, but we don’t
..tired of not having a franchise QB

    ……..JUST TIRED OF BEING TRIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. ChanEpic Says:

The more I think of it, BA’s describing the secondary as soft is an indictment of the players for sure but it is much more of an indictment of Licht’s talent eval prowess.

  20. diggler Says:

forget that put Davis at nickle, dood is practically a linebacker keep Whitehead on his side and you’ll have a serious heavy hitting, crap your pants side of the field. No joke!

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

What’s with all the doom and gloom?

We lost to the 3rd ranked team in the league (NFL Power rankings) we were ranked 21. IE We lost a game we should have lost. We had an outside chance…we were without some players..we’re getting better.

Let’s see how we do against Carolina in London. Carolina has to travel as well…London is no excuse for either team.

Carolina is a game that is our’s for the taking. Let’s see if we can take it.

If VH3 doesn’t improve, you will be able to rest easy at night. He won’t be here and he won’t collect $9 million.

Yes, the Bucs picked up his fifth-year option but that does not mean they cannot cut him.

  27. #1bucsfan Says:

Yes we are getting lit up like a Xmas tree but a lot of these guys are rookies or 2nd year players that had to be coached up an fixed from the last coaching staff that did nothing or made them regressed so it’s going to take sometime an some games to get them right. Everyone called rojo a bust last year an now the dude looks an runs totally diff. Patience young grasshoppers but my patience is gone lol go Bucs #endthedrought
