Arians Contradicts Himself On The Running Game

October 30th, 2019

Joe’s calling a foul on Bucco Bruce Arians.

Something here doesn’t make sense.

Joe will let the great Buccaneers fans decide.

Yesterday on Buccaneers Radio, Arians had this to say about the Tampa Bay running game, which Arians acknowledged to show host Casey Phillips has been struggling.

“Again, the communication. I don’t know why we had so many mental errors up front blocking scheme-wise because they didn’t do anything that we didn’t practice against.” Arians said about the running game against the Titans. “So again, I go back to our preparation; we talked a lot about it in our meetings. Whatever we’re doing preparing-wise isn’t good enough. Because if they stay in the same front, it’s one thing when they’re wuppin’ your butt, when you’re wuppin’ your own, that’s different. We gotta quit doing that.”

Today, Arians was asked about the running game struggling, outside of the revival of scrambling Jameis against Tennessee.

Arians’ response? “I’m fine with the running game, other than our short yardage stuff.”

Which is it? Was the run game a mess of mental errors and missed blocks and poor preparation, or was Arians fine with it?

The fact is the Bucs are not a good NFL rushing team this season. They’re in the league’s bottom tier, running significantly below Arians’ running backs goal.

Not much of BA’s BS makes sense…. his contradictions rival a politician

  2. Just Sayin’ Says:

Was BA asked to explain the unexplainable usage of Dare?

  3. jmarkbuc Says:

Somebody check the flask in BSA’s golf cart…

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

If you have practiced it and it worked then it doesn’t work in a game maybe it is a talent factor. That’s why they say it comes down to execution, and sometimes just sure will.

  5. Pete I Says:

Bruce ” Lack of preparation H ” Arians strikes again.

On a side note the Golf Cart is also fine with the running game.

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

I surmise that Lefty got spooked after JW threw his first INT then quickly abandoned the run and short passing game on their side of the 50 to early and morphed into a deep passing game. It is that reason why we began to watch plays take forever to develop. I didn’t get that when we seemed to be moving the ball at will early with runs and short passing.

  7. Anonymous Says:

Can we get Dirk Koetter back in here?

  8. Lamarcus Says:

It’s why JW needs 45+ points a game. The team is not good enough and we are not 1 Qb away. Sorry guys

  9. Anonymous Says:

Isn’t this the same guy who gave his coaches the full week off, and didn’t bring the players back until Tuesday? You’d think they’d have been prepared for this past game. I shutter to think of Sunday coming.

  10. lewis Says:

Do not start running down this coach he took this job to save JW but nobody can he doesn’t retain knowledge , so now we know we have to move on with a new qb we do not need a superstar we just need a player that can manage the game and not handing the football away in our own red zone .

  11. bucs4ya Says:

Maybe he was speaking about the short yardage stuff earlier as well. If a question isn’t asked to clarify then we’ll never know and all this speculation gets going. Ask some real questions and follow up. Why is Dare getting so much love? Easy answer. Because that’s who Bucs coaches trust most in the situations in which he appears. –Joe Why isn’t Rojo touching the ball at least 20x a game somehow. Easy answer. Coaches don’t think he’s ready or more trustworthy than the guy in front of him. –Joe Why is Lefty still calling plays and why isn’t Arians involved in the game planning if he’s not going to call plays? Arians is heavily involved in game-planning. –Joe

  12. JimmyJack Says:

This is what bothers me. This team right now looks incapable of playing fundamental football. Almost two decades losing games because we can’t do the easy stuff. It’s maddening.

Bruce better fix this. Albsolute mimimual expectation. Fix that and we got a chance. But it’s not getting any better and I’ll run out of patience.

I’ve started keeping metal track of all the lack of fundamentals that costs us points on Gameday. Last week I counted 7 before halftime. The week before it was like 11 before halftime.

It’s the key to turning this franchise into a winner. A good coach would fix this.

  13. Jean Lafitte Says:

who runs a draw when you need one yard? You run a draw when you need 20

  14. bucs4ya Says:

Joe, Bruce has said that he is not involved in the offensive game planning and allows Bryon to do it on his own. Has that changed? Wish I could remember the exact interview maybe others remember?

  15. JimmyJack Says:

No Lamarcus. Winston don’t need 45+ plus to win a game. That’s just made up nonsense. Last week he needed to hit our a erage of 28. And realistically if Winston limit his 5 turnovers we could probably win with less then 28.

The fundamentals is the problem and Winston is no exception. I mean the dude is throwing picks on screen plays and actually threw a pass right into the belly of a 300 lb lineman that was 10 feet in front of his face.WTF?

  16. SOEbuc Says:

Justin Herbert and a good RT would be a dream for the offense.

  17. Jim Says:

Like everyone else, I welcomed Arians, but here’s what’s troubling:
He said the Secondary was totally fixed.
He is far more apt to criticize rookies than his five-year QB.
He preaches “accountability”, but when he says no more than one pick a game is acceptable, Winston throws 4 or 5 and…nothing.
Handing Leftwich the keys to the offense is not working.
The teams does not appear to be well-coached, not at all…

  18. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Ah I see the Winston defense force is out again. Man one thing I cannot understand is why we keep running Dare and Barber when Rojo has ran better so many times yet we keep getting them to run. It’s why I think Bucco Bruce is tanking.

  19. BrianBucs Says:

Overrated, overhyped blowhard who just likes to hear himself talk.

  20. Kord Says:

Better be blaring stadium noise in practice, which I am sure they are not, all this prepared talk is crap, can’t wait when Jameis gives gives over 6 or 7 turnovers and still starts the week after seattle

  21. Lamarcus Says:

    Jimmyjack

It’s made up? Don’t you see what happens out there. We get a late lead only for defense to blow it. We blow most of our 4 quarter leads.

JW is 4-8 when he don’t turn it over say alot about everyone else.

  22. Bobby M. Says:

Two reputable coaches back to back yrs don’t seem overly interested in putting RoJo out there to see what he can do….That’s pretty telling. We have a 2nd rd pick invested in him and he’s sitting behind an undrafted FA. That’s like burning a #1 pick on a nickel corner

  23. Defense Rules Says:

“Arians is heavily involved in game-planning. –Joe” THAT’S more disturbing than even having Leftwich calling plays. Tells me that there are no answers forthcoming from One Bucs Palace. Sounds like the brain trust is basically tapped out.

On the good news front, the defense hasn’t jumped overboard yet. HOPEFULLY Todd Bowles & the D can do enough to keep JL, BA, BL & all their BS from sinking the ship.

  24. Buc believer Says:

BA is full of BS and now he is full of Glazer loot.

  25. SB Says:

So we are STILL arguing why this team fails with the MOST TO PRONE QB in modern HISTORY????
    SMDH.
I have supported him for the last 4 and a half years. Done.

  26. Buc believer Says:

This is what happens when your Daddy starred out in business by ripping off poor people in trailer parks and starting your wealth building that way. Now people are stealing from you! How’s it taste G family?

  27. Petty Officer Buc Says:

I wouldn’t expect if I get censored for what I am about to say for pure speculation, but through reading between the lines and listening to a variety of Buccaneer related podcasts, the lack of Ronald Jones might not nonsensically be related to talent but just to him being aloof in film study, showing up to meetings not fully prepared/engaged, being a young guy who isn’t 100% a professional, ect.

  28. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“Like my Dad said we have been fooled and conned

under the sheep clothing was a 4 win Jets and 3 win Ari coaching staff

We are worse team than last year under 5 win Klueless Koetter

Atlanta might lose but Koetter is going to drop 40pts each game against Backstabber Gump and BS whisperer”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  29. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

If he had 50 turnover compared to 92 they don’t win more games

He couldn’t beat titans with every opportunity x 4

  30. Doctor Stroud Says:

He could be talking about dumb, drive-killing penalties. The Bucs are ranked in the top five in pre-snap infractions. Our Center is one of the most penalized players in the league. Antony Auclair, who is not even a starter, leads all Tight Ends in the NFL with 8 penalties. Does he know that this is not the CFL? Is this another Jason Licht “special project”?

  31. H8JWLveBucs Says:

That’s why he loves JW because they both bull*** artist

  32. ElioT Says:

The Bucs can clearly establish the running game early on.

Then the turnover train starts, and they still commit a little bit to pounding the rock.

Then more turnovers or defensive meltdowns.

Then #44 is the main RB in crunch time.

Then more turnovers and the Bucs lose.

    Questions:
1.) Why, when the going gets tough, is #44 the primary RB?
2.) Why, if #44 is so good that he’s not the starting RB before the game is on line?
3.) Why, does the Tampa media “keyboard” warriors not call the coach out on this BS when they have the chance?

Y’all worried about losing these precious media credentials that mean, as Matt Foley would say “Jack Squat!!!”?

Grow a set and ask Bruce to his face.

  33. Stanglassman Says:

The question was in reference to the 4-1 run play that got stopped so there’s no inconsistency.

  34. ElioT Says:

Some hardcore media around here, love to ask the tough questions to the fans but never to the coaches face.

How much are the Glaziers paying y’all?

  35. Lamarcus Says:

    Bird

Fair enough I get it. But JW turns it over and gives the other teams good position. What our defense giving our offense? Can they get a pick for us? Why they are always in trial position chasing someone is beyond sorry. I’m pissed about losing to 3 backup qbs. It’s on the defense in 2 of those

What we have about 8 ints in last 2 years? Where are takeaways? See JW can’t make mistakes His team can’t make up for it. They will be mistakes made by ANY QB THTAT PLAYS FOR US. NOT JUST WINSTON. but JW still performs and make up for it and then defense gives it all away because they can’t guard a simple out route Carlton Davis

  36. Tye Says:

A once promising coach watching his legacy deteriorate as he tries to manage one of the worst organizations… Mysterious health issues may begin to reoccur before to Long so he can pass this mess on to someone else..

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Lamarcus……I’m talking about this season. There’s only been 7 games so 4-8 is barely relevant to this team. In fact if Winson only had 12 no turnover games that’s pretty awful if that what that stat is from.

And I’m not saying he gotta have no turnovers for us to win but it’s been 10 or more in the last two games. That’s unacceptable. If he limits them we almost defientally win last week and maybe in London. 3 games now we could of won if he just limits turnovers. Things could defientally be a lot better then sitting 2-5 right now when you get turnover issues in basically half your games.

  38. Tbbucs3 Says:

What I can’t stand is that Arians “thing” as a HC was his playcalling and he just handed it over to a 2d year playcaller with No track record.

Playcalling in the NFL is hard you have to really think fast and adjust to what defenses are doing. Left which has been flat out bad.

  39. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

    Mistakes are fine
14 tds to 18 turnovers this year
    102 tds to 92 turnovers

How many stats when the game is over . It does bother ways
The offense giving it up in red zone

Offense giving defense no time to rest when 3 and out

  40. Tbbucs3 Says:

But looking at the scope of things Arians shouldn’t even be here, the Bucs should’ve cleaned house from the Lovie Smith era a LONG time ago.

It’s amazing how were still riding the failed 2014 Lovie Smith coaching/front office tree with Dirk and Jason Licht and unfortunately that ride only takes you in 1 direction. Down.

  41. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Look up Barry Melrose that is who the bucs hired; stop repeating bad history

  42. JimmyJack Says:

And why are some fans still defending Winston for anyways? He’s had major turnover issues in 3 of 7 games now. What planet are y’all on to think this aren’t a problem? He is actively getting worse as a pro QB. WtH

I can get it if you think Winston will get better in the season and proove something but just stop pretending it’s been good enough. It’s not even close.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

The freaking guy thows a ball 20 yards beyond his receivers and on the next drive throws a ball right between the number of a D Lineman who was 10 feet in front of him???

Do y’all just not see this crap or you just don’t care? Cause I wanna win and that’s not how it’s done.

  44. Lamarcus Says:

    Jimmyjack

Yes I don’t care. Because I know we still lose when we don’t turnover the ball. That’s bad

How can you properly evaluate a QB in this mess? No run game and poor secondary play and kicker who cost us a game? I see why he still on the team without a deal. When things are good around him and he still makes mistakes then yes get rid of him but until then I will defend the Qb and it will be any other qb as well I just love QBs and know JW is a rare raw one

  45. Lamarcus Says:

You guys blame Licht for drafting players who are not hitting. Too many players after JW was drafted are not hitting is troublesome around any young Qb. And any Miami, Fau, South Florida, Gator fans has anything say about JW are INVALID.

  46. Buc believer Says:

    @Duthsty…. Arians doesn’t have a mullet.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Ok Lamarcus you don’t care. Got it. Sorry but I do. If you don’t wanna believe that turnovers made a difference in the last game I completely disagree. I really have a hard time believing you don’t think turnovers made a difference in the 49ers game. We literally had the ball for a gamewinning drive and instead committed a turnover on first down…….Don’t know where your coming from but thats a difference maker in my book. To say otherwise is just a excuse.

  48. View from 132 Says:

Maybe they could move to Montreal.

  49. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Whew Lamarcus you know if it wasn’t for the FSU Shills in these chats they would be a lot better. Also what does college affiliation have to do with who my NFL teams starting QB is?

  50. Rayjay1122 Says:

I am convinced that everyone who still has hope and confidence in these Bucs are children and not mature adults who understand the real situation with this organization. Until the Bucs get sold to a competent owner or the Glazers luck into hiring a competent GM, this team will continue losing and making blooper footage.

  51. Pewter power Says:

If you were buc fan you would know he also talked about rojo needing to work on his blocking to get on the field more….it’s sad most of you dont realize this is an opinion site and you being led around like sheep. He didnt say he wasnt ok with the run game he specifically mentioned mental errors. Damn how many dumb people come here to take shots at this club for not being in playoff race. Very few positive takes were here after the draft so not sure where these expectations came from, they weren’t here before the season started.

  52. DBS Says:

    Pewter power.
Make you feel big to hide behind a keyboard and call fans every name you can think of. If you hate the site and people so much why do you come here?

  53. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Pewter power, I get it. The comment section is a cesspool during the season (because we keep losing).

It gets real quiet around here when we win. All the trolls go under their bridges and a little bit of light can be seen in the distance. Then BAM! Back to losing, back to negativity, back to ridiculous takes from armchair GMs who feel that they could do better because their madden franchise is always undefeated.

It is becoming harder and harder to have legitimate conversations and debates about the buccaneers here. So, I basically come here to watch the circus and see what all of the clowns are doing. It sucks because I would much rather be able to contribute to the conversation, but there isn’t one. It’s just a bunch of monkeys in cages screaming and flinging poop at the spectators.

Anyway I share your angst, rant over. Go Bucs!!!

  54. adam from ny Says:

bruce arians or lenny bruce…not sure who’s talking sometimes

    Watch the video. It’s damning.

  57. James Says:

As usual joe wants to have controversy everyone is acting surprised about not being in playoff contention when we all know it’s going to take more than one season

  58. James Says:

I totally agree with the video it sounds like him 😳 hopefully it gets him 🔥

  59. James Says:

Jason Licht I am talking about

  60. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “And why are some fans still defending Winston for anyways? He’s had major turnover issues in 3 of 7 games now”.

@Lamarcus … “How can you properly evaluate a QB in this mess? No run game and poor secondary play and kicker who cost us a game?”

B-I-N-G-O!!! Therein lies our major problem … Turnover issues have killed us and are at the heart of this mess. In the 3 games that you noted JimmyJack when 15 of our 18 turnovers occurred (think about that for a second), we never really had a chance … because of our OWN mistakes. The Turnover Differential was Plus 2 in favor of the 49ers, Plus 6 in favor of the Panthers & Plus 3 in favor of the Titans. All 3 of those teams have very good defenses that do very well generating turnovers (in Takeaways, 49ers are #7, Panthers #3 & Titans #9). And we helped them pad their stats. And lost all 3 games in the process.

But look at the other 4 games. We beat the Panthers in Game 2 by 20-14, winning the TO battle 1-0 in that game. We lost to the Giants in Game 3 by 32-31, despite winning the TO battle 2-1 & whooping them in every stat category (we had plenty of opportunities to win). We beat the Rams in Game 4 by 55-40, winning the TO battle 4-1 in that game. We then lost to the Saints 31-24, again despite winning the TO battle 1-0 (Saints showed me that they’re clearly better coached & have more talent).

When we lose, we beat ourselves, almost always through turnovers. THAT’S on coaching (inadequate preparation & poor game-planning & play-calling IMO). THAT’S also on management because this OLine clearly is sub-standard (matches up poorly against the better defenses). THAT’S also on our QB (despite what our HC says).

FIXING IT at this point halfway through the season will be really difficult. A good start though would be for BA to replace our OC. That experiment has failed IMO.

  61. Defense Rules Says:

@Rayjay1122 … “I am convinced that everyone who still has hope and confidence in these Bucs are children and not mature adults who understand the real situation with this organization.”

I love comments like that Rayjay. Adds soooo much to the conversation. Now go back to sleep.

  62. down in the dirt doug Says:

OK,I get it—Rojo has flaws—so do 70% of our players.Start Rojo and if he doesn’t produce after 25 carries we will shut up, BA ,and let you do your thing.

  63. MadMax Says:

I get the feeling BA is mailing it in…..sad. and when you are, you’ll call out the bs in hopes things will change, but when they wont, ah fk it….pretty typical in most blue collar jobs.

  64. Hodad Says:

By now it should be apparent to all Bruce is nothing but an old man sitting in a golf cart wearing a funny hat he thinks is cool who just rambles on not really saying anything that makes sense. The Glazers could’ve gotten the same thing at the local nursing home for a lot cheaper, and finished with a better record.

  65. Buczilla Says:

Our offensive line is not as talented as some people think. Outside of Jenkins and Dotson, the rest of the line is soft. How pathetic is it that Smith and Ali were talking about needing someone with an “edge” to set the tone after Mankins left?

Our running backs are well below average and the one guy with a chance to be special (Jones) doesn’t get the opportunities he needs to show it.

Waste of a season. Waste of 5 years with an inept gm and qb. Waste of my time. The creamsicles to combat this hot and humid Halloween are on me. 😛

  66. Buccfan37 Says:

Licht draft picks are mostly busts yet he is still here.

  67. TBUC North Carolina Says:

    Lamarcus
No College in Florida affiliation here!! JayMiss is too stupid to be a NFL QB!! 1/2 the brain as Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers! Go stay on tomahawknation.com

  68. How bout dem bucs Says:

I read a stat about winning QBs in the NFL. QBs who made smart decisions off the field made equally smart decisions on the field… Brady, brees, manning, Wilson etc.. QBs who made bad off field decisions Winston, (stealing crabs.) Uber driver, etc. yes he has great arm talent, bt JW decision making is his greatest flaw… there is no pill, antibiotics or medication to fix stupid!!
