Status Woe Is On Arians

October 28th, 2019

Bucco Bruce Arians made a promise early this year.

And he said it over and over.

His Buccaneers would run the football effectively. Arians was adamant his offense would hum with a 4.0 yards-per-carry mark or better.

So here we are. Despite the fifth- and sixth-leading receivers in the NFL on the Bucs roster, Chris Godwin (705 yards) and Mike Evans (662), respectively, a reality that should soften up run defenses, the Bucs can’t run the rock effectively.

They are neither explosive in the run game nor nasty when they need short yardage.

Through seven games, the Bucs are averaging 3.8 yards per carry (from handoffs) and have a too-healthy share of negative runs. They’re also among the worst in the NFL on 3rd-and-short. Last season, when the Bucs were horrible at running the football, they finished at 3.6 yards per carry (from handoffs). Both marks are well below the league average.

It’s Arians who boasted of how his two hand-picked offensive line coaches were going to repair the running game that allegedly was so critical for his quarterback.

It’s Arians who decided to keep three offensive linemen earning more than $10 million each. (Why can’t the Bucs not run behind those guys?)

It’s Arians who evaluated Ronald Jones and Peyton Barber (and unemployed Shaun Wilson and Andre Ellington) and believed he had a good stable of backs.

It’s Arians who has decided Dare Ogunbowale should lead the team in snaps at running back in October.

It’s Arians who said this spring that he doesn’t invest big money at running back.

Joe pins the Bucs’ sad, said running game on Arians. He had the power to make changes and didn’t. He’s had the power to design what he must to get the most out of the running game.

Jason Licht? Joe gave up long ago on Licht when it comes to running backs. The Doug Martin fiasco followed by the passing on a shopping list of good running backs in the 2017 draft was the end for Joe. Missing on Ronald Jones, who can’t win a running backs gig in Tampa, was just icing on a rotten cake.

Joe is steamed about the rushing attack. The problems run very deep.

and jaboo didn’t handle it well…

jenna caught jameis all in his feelings and plunged a dagger in him at the end there…

jenna might be slightly evil and a man hater…

    Ownership sucks

    Management sucks

Oversized coaching staff sucks (I mean who the hell is our WR’s coach and how is he still employed? Especially after hearing BA says multiple times this year that WRs keep running the wrong routes causing many of the INTs)

QB has been regressing for the last 4 weeks

WRs can’t run a crisp route or get sepearation.

None of our TEs can even catch the few times they are targeted.

    O-line still sucks (shocking!)

D line is inconsistent at best

Secondary sucks (but most of them are young)

But hey, we finally got a kicker! It’s literally the only positive at this point of the season.

Oh yeah and JPP is a stud! Only guy on this team with any real heart besides maybe Godwin.

  5. Sarasota Garey Says:

Arians didnt come into the best situation salary cap wise, most people didnt predict the bucs to have a winning records this year anyways, atleast now he knows what he has towards next year.

  6. adam from ny Says:

jenna’s questions are often laced with estrogen in a testosterone infused room…so realistically most of the players and coaches have a difficult time dealing with it…they sort of twinkle toe around jenna’s offerings…i must say i do enjoy these interactions…it’s like a sidebar to the actual football

  7. Frank Pillow Says:

Even I can see that #27 deserves a shot at getting the lion’s share of the carries & should play a bigger part in the short passing/screen game.

  11. Orlando Kevin Says:

I got to know a former Bucs assistant who knows the Bucs well. I heard that our player personnel team is half the number of people of a lot of other teams. Any team can and do miss on players, but good teams turn average players or throw away players into much better players. And better teams obviously invest in finding better talent.

This same coach has worked with top coaches in the league whose players show more respect for and play harder for better run teams. I think the Bucs have some good talent and players that genuinely care, but as a team, they are still far away from being a seriously run team.

As a fan of 30 plus years, I follow the team year round reading articles daily. No one I know buys in more. But I’m getting frustrated that our season is over before week 8 every year. And every year we talk about the same problems. It starts to make fans feel like they are wasting their time investing so much time and money in a team that has deep rooted issues and is badly run.

  12. Pewter power Says:

DeMar dotson cant run block and they were playing pretty well before cappa got hurt. The problem is the o line and titans have a good front. Maybe now you’ll stop penciling in wins because we were never that much better than the titans

  13. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe gave up long ago on Licht when it comes to running backs.”

For some reason Joe, my computer didn’t display the rest of what you surely MUST HAVE WRITTEN AFTER “running backs” at the end of that sentence. You know … “or quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, OLinemen, DLinemen, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, kickers, punters, long snappers and of course, coaches & ball boys”.

That’s OK, I don’t trust Jason Lichtsout either to pick any of those, whether in the draft or in free agency.

  14. Orlando Kevin Says:

@PewterReport…. I agree the right side of our online is an issue; I like Cappa but he’s out. But I’m tired of excuses. All teams deal with serious injury issues and they keep getting Wins.

We could have and we should have beaten the Titans …. period.

We didn’t get beat. We beat ourselves ….. again.

The offensive play calling sucks and is predictable….. still.

  19. martinii Says:

Over the last 10 seasons (not including this one) the Buc’s have been the 28th worst team in the NFL. They have 2 winning seasons, no playoff games, average 5.5 wins per season and 10.5 losses. They are now on their 5th coach and by all appearance will repeat their losing ways in 2019. I don’t post these numbers to surprise anyone, you all have heard them a million times. However after that loss yesterday I thought long and hard and concluded this is what we are. “The Clowns of the NFL. We have perfected bad snaps, turnovers, penalties and now after being on the 1 yard line our players actually ignore the defense and tackle each other. Seen it all.
I’ve followed this team since it’s inception. I been a loyal fan and a devout excuse maker. Ive been ridiculed for defending them, When I was a little younger I shelled out thousands for season tickets, all I got was one Super Bowl and a few good years of Dungy. This team needs to be dismantled and shipped to a larger Market, or sold to owners who focus less on soccer and more on football. I doubt I live long enough to see another playoff caliber team, but feel sorry for the good people of Tampa especially the kids, They deserve better than this garbage thrown at us on Sunday Afternoon.

  24. D-Rome Says:

No single person is more responsible for the woes of this franchise than Backstabbin’ Jason Licht. You can blame the Glazers, but they don’t count as a single person.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Adam from ny … Justin Evans is on IR. Agree with ya about Justin Watson though (surely he can catch the ball better than Perriman or Miller). And where is Tanner Hudson? He seemed to have pretty good hands in preseason, but has yet to be targeted … why not? (at 6’5″ & 239 lbs he’s almost the same size as Mike Evans who’s 6’5″ & 231 lbs).

And what’s happened to Mike Edwards? Was the starting safety in the first 5 games, but had o snaps in the Panthers game & only 1 snap yesterday. I thought he had a hamstring issue, but he’s never shown up on the injury report. SMB is getting more playing time in the Secondary, but Jamel Dean only has 3 snaps in the past 2 games & Ryan Smith has none. MJ Stewart has albeit disappeared (didn’t dress yesterday).

  26. Locked In Says:

Teams want the Bucs to pass – more passes = more TOs, usually in excellent field position.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome

come on dude… jason licht sucks no doubt… bucs sucked long before licht and will suck long after licht…. this is 100% all on the glazers this team has not won a single meaningful game since the super bowl that is nearly two decades ago. super bowls expire week 1 of the following season they are NOT lifetime free passes…. you have to try really hard to be this bad for so long so yes sir with all do respect to you this is 100% on the incompetent glazers. When you own a business no matter how large or small the owners are 100% responsible for every aspect of the business…. glazers are just rubbing Tampa fans nose in poop every damn year laughing all the way to the bank. they have ZERO intentions of fielding a winner anyone who believes otherwise is a dumbarse simple as that…

  28. SOEbuc Says:

    Orlando Kevin

BA is getting Major money to talk. That’s it. Then let’s 3-13 BL calling all the plays. Classic Koetter. 2nd and 3, PB gets stuffed. 3rd and 4, Jameis can’t connect. And these are all red zone calls! LEARN HOW TO RUN MORE F#CKING SCREENS WITH THE STRONG BLOCKING WR WE HAVE!!!

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

BA is a BS artist him and Tom Moore design plays for Leftwich for the Sammy Baugh and John United era their time has passed retire get your golf cart and ride away in the sunset. Maybe Belicheat will give you a job if Josh Mcdaniels leaves at the end of the year.

  30. Bucfan1988 Says:

The running game was actually looking reasonable then Cappa broke his forearm. The Bucs should have been giving ROJO a lot more more carries before Cappa’s injury.

Last 2 games, we have no push on the interior. The Earl of Watford cannot rum block. Dotson is on his last leg and he can’t run block. Hence no ouch from the right side.

Cappa getting back will benefit the run game but BA needs to STOP putting Barber out there for imports at carries. That dude is done…

  31. D-Rome Says:

I like Coach Band-Aid but I do not believe he will be here next year.

Make no mistake tmax, I agree with you on the Glazers for the most part. I think the only thing I may disagree with you on is that they don’t care. I believe they care for the simple that fact that winning brings in more money for a sports franchise and they care about making more money. They’ve had to sign off on this massive coaching staff, they were one of the first NFL teams in install cryogenic chambers for the players, they have a top notch facility for the players, the fan experience at the game (apart from what’s happening on the field) is very good. I believe they care, but they do not make good decisions year in and year out. They are incompetent as sports franchise owners.

They clearly have an old school mindset that the most important person in the organization for team success is the head coach and I’m sure there are a bunch of gutless yes men telling them what they should do while they collect a fat paycheck. Jason Licht is the prime culprit.

A year ago, instead of looking to make trades to improve last year’s teams or stepping in to fire Mike Smith, he was having meetings with Bruce Arians to gauge his interest in coaching. He did so knowing full well his job was on the line along with Koetter. He was the kind of guy jumping on the lifeboat of the Titanic while leaving the family behind. What do the Glazers do? They reward him with a five year extension because, once again, he sold them a bill of goods.

  32. Bradinator Says:

Anyone that believed that line needs their head checked. It was well known our run game was going to stink like Limburger cheese. It was universal among the experts. How can we be surprised? We have ZERO Pro Bowl caliber OLs and ZERO Pro Bowl caliber RBs. We scare nobody. It’s like proclaiming to be shocked to find that a movie named “Plan 9 From Outer Space” is bad.

  33. The Buc Realist Says:

Bruce Arrogance said a lot of things early this year, and none of it was even close to the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst part is, that they will start in with different excuses and a new narrative and it will lead to a wasted 2020 Season!!!!!!!!!

Things like, ” well we kept Jason Licht, because we just extended him”

    very sad indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 revealed answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already knew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. TOM Says:

You can point fingers at different individuals all you want, but the fact is that this WHOLE organization sucks.

  35. ElioT Says:

    Here’s how it goes down:

Bucs start the game with some decent runs by Barber and Jones.

    Bucs have a dumba** turnover.

Bucs still try to pound the ball.

    Bucs have another dumba** turnover.

Bucs put #44 in for the rest of the game.

    Bucs have another dumba** turnover.

    Bucs lose the game.

  36. Pugs&Bucs Says:

It’s important to remember that we had to pick OJ Howard because he “fell” to us.

It’s also important to note that when Cook notches 57 more total yards in this CURRENT season ONLY, he will have passed Howard’s CAREER YARDAGE TOTAL.

Yes… Cook did in seven games what Howard took a career to accomplish in the NFL.

    But sure… dump Jameis…… he’s the problem.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

martinii … Very interesting 11:39 post. I’ve been a Bucs’ fan since 1982 myself & yes the ride has been frustrating, probably because I keep looking at professional sports as ‘entertainment’ (there’s very little ‘entertaining’ about the Bucs nowadays it seems). I’m starting to just think it’s turned to pity now.

The Bucs remind me a lot of the ‘Rocky’ movies, and not just because it’s been a rocky ride. Stallone’s first ‘Rocky’ movie was in 1976 … same year the Bucs premiered. There have been 6 movies in the series (not counting the 2015 ‘Creed’ movie which was a spinoff IMO). There have been kinda 6 ‘periods’ in the Bucs history corresponding to the Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V and Rocky Balboa movies …

    1 – John McKay era (1976-1984)
    2 – Missing Years I (1985-1995) … Bennett, Perkins, Williamson, Wyche
    3 – Tony Dungy era (1996-2001)
    4 – John Gruden era (2002-2008)
5 – Missing Years II (2009-2018) … Morris, Schiano, Smith, Koetter
    6 – Bruce Arians era (2019 – )

So right now we’re in the ‘Rocky Balboa’ era, which seems about right since the movie’s recap says “Thirty years after the ring of the first bell, Rocky Balboa comes out of retirement and dons his gloves for his final fight; against the reigning heavyweight champ Mason ‘The Line’ Dixon”. When that movie was made in 2006, Stallone was in his 60’s. He fought well, but lost. Coincidences? Perhaps not.

  41. bucs4ya Says:

It would be amazing to hear reporters ask questions that the fans are asking like: why isn’t Rojo getting the bulk of carries, edgy do we continue to run basic and predictable plays, why doesn’t BA take part in the offensive game planning. Come on ask some real questions.

  42. adam from ny Says:

dude the justin evan question was rhetorical…

he has been injured forever, with limited explanation of injury and info…is it a MSRA situation or something…something is up big time..

especially when we need DB’s big time now…

all other db’s mentioned deserve to ride the bench if their playing time has been diminished…we have a beyond problematic secondary issue

  43. Bucs96 Says:

Funny thing about all this is the Bucs actually have their RB but refuse to start him or let him be the bellcow!
